Council proposes
`beautification' for
Hwy. 2 corridor

PICKERING — The Town has taken some first tentative steps toward
creating a new and better look for its urban core.
At their Monday night meeting, Pickering councillors stepped back
from approving a "redevek>Qment beautification' program for the town's
Hwy. 2 corridor, but only to make sure the project was feasible and
would not run into any resistance from Durham Region, which has just
taken over control of the road from the Province.
The program calls for.
O a "landmark" sign to be erected beside the highway to indicate to peo-
ple that they are entering the "gateway" to Durham.
O enhanced tree and flower planting and uniform sidewalks for all future
development applications fronting the portion of Hwy. 2 which runs
through Pickering:

fered minor injuries while being

early Tuesday morning.

When officers tried to pull
the driver's car over, he refused
to stop, police report. The man
then drove into an underground

Durham Regional Police embarked on a special patrol
route this week with a special purpose in mind: Preventing
needless death and injury when people don't yield to trains.
The joint patrol between police and Canadian Pacific Rail
officials took place on a train as it travelled across the Region.
For the police, whose resources are already stretched, this
was a necessary move to target motorists and pedestrians who
illegally drive through level crossings and trespass on CP Rail

The reason: people are getting killed when they flirt with
oncoming trains. In Durham Region alone, three teens have
been killed by trains since 1990. On a larger scale, 57 people
in Canada died last year while trespassing on railway proper-
ties and 55 fatalities have been recorded from vehicle acci-
dents at train crossings.
Two incidents in which laws were broken this week

another motorist narrowly avoided the train.
As Durham Region coroner Dr. Leo Quinn puts it, howev-
er, "you can't legislate against stupidity."
And particularly in rases where you have teens playing
chicken with oncoming trains, you can't always prevent
needless death and injury.
This patrol, though sadly needed to raise awareness of the
dangers right here at home, should help bring down the tragic
statistics.
Every one of us should learn from the project There is no
meeting so important. no dinner so delicious, or ix) train so
long that motorists can't obey the riles and wait for a few
extra minutes.
Parents, advise your children to steer clear of train tracks.
Drivers, don't gamble with your life. A little patience could
go a long way in preventing carnage involving trains.

story from a man whose career
has seen over 400 jury trials, was
once voted one of the top three
prosecutors in Canada, has a
genius -level 10, and describes
himself as "egomaniacal".
Having practised law in the
area since 1957, Bruce Affleck is
now Durham's hottest defence
anomey. But even after 69 mur-
der trials, the lawyer with Affleck
and Payne doesn't have to think
far back to remember his
toughest case. Last
August, a first-degree
murder charge against
John Smith (whose name
has been changed to pro-
tect his identity) was dis-
missed at a preliminary
hearing — an uncommon
scenario.
The case involved a
man who had been beaten
to death in Oshawa. Mr.
Smith and another
accused were the last to
seethe deceased before he
died. The Crown alleged i
the beating had been exe-
cuted by more than one
person, suggesting that

lasting friendship with the co -

see the deceased before he died.
All this made gathering evi-
dence difficult for Mr. Affleck.

obliged to commit the accused
person to trial. In this case, there
was evidence against Mr. Smith
because he was present at the

After 17 days of trial, Mr.
Affleck says, "It was a very reas-

AJAX-PICKERING — A good season suddenly got a whole lot
better for the Denis O'Connor Catholic High School Chargers
senior hockey team.
The Chargers, in fourth place in the Lake Ontario Secondary
School Athletics league standings, knocked off the league kingpins
in dramatic fashion.
DO'C posted a come -from -behind 4-3
victory over the first -place Dunharton
High School Spartans at the Ajax �O•��A•
Community Centre arena Tuesday
afternoon. The Chargers, who were
badly outplayed in the first two peri-
ods after which they trailed 3-0, came
out flying in the third stanza. DO'C _
scored four unanswered goals, includ-
ing the game winner by Doug
O'Grady, his second of the contest,
with 44 seconds remaining.
The game represented the first loss for
the Spartans this season. Their record now
falls to 6-1-2.
Meanwhile, the win moves Denis O'Connor (4-2-3) one point
back of third-place Donevan Collegiate of Oshawa.
Steve Fernandez also notched a pair of goals for DO'C. Adding
assists were Brad Godward, O'Grady, Kyle Vandegraff, Chris Ker-
luke, Nick Yu and Mike Jarvis.
Ken Brace scored two goals for Dunbarton, while Chad Laidler
added a single. Paul Mitchell registered two assists, with single
helpers to Laidler and Sean Pierson.
Dunbarton has three regular -season games remaining, while
DO'C has two games left prior to the playoffs which begin on
Monday, Feb. 13.

AJAX-PICKERING — Annan-
dale Curling Club rinks had their fair
share of success at the Investors
Group Trophy Bonspiel which con-
cluded this past weekend.
The 90th ediu'4.m of the world's
longest continuous bonspiel used 27
curling clubs and attracted 521 men's
rinks from across the Toronto area
over the past two weekends and last
week. The finals in all 13 events
were staged at the York Curling Club
Saturday.
Warren Leslie of Annandale
skipped a team to the final of the
Trophy Fourth Event. Joining Leslie
were -ice Harry Nolte. second Mar-
vin Harrison and lead Ken Bolsby.
The rink piled up six consecutive
wins to advance to the final against
Bob Stoll's Weston rink. However.
the Leslie rink was defeated 9-2 by
the Stoll team.
Two other Annandale rinks won
their way to Friday night's competi-
tion before suffering a loss, which
meant they came: home with prizes.
Jeff Cairns and his team ended their
run in the Trophy Second Event, as
did the Bob Evans rink in the Trophy
Fourth Event.
In total, 24 Annandale rinks t(x)k
pan in this year's Investors Group
Trophy Bonspiel.

Annandale still has ticket books
for the 1996 World Curling Charrupi-
onships in Hamilton. However, this
allocation of tickets only lasts until
the end of this month. After that the
books will be returned to the Hamil-
ton committee and split tip into the
various ticket packages.
Curling fans wanting to take in
the action are urged to get together
with friends to purctrase these books
of tickets, as they offer quality seat-
ing at a better price than what will be
offered for irdividual tickets.

You've decided to buy a new home,
therefore you want to sell your existing
home quickly and for the best possible
price. The following tips from the
Canadian Home Builders' Association
show how you can make your home more
attractive to prospective buyers.
One of the first places to assess is the
front yard. According to many experts,
curb appeal is important. It doesn't matter
what the inside looks like if the buyer
never gets there.
A coat of paint on the door, polished
house numbers, door knob and knocker, a
new brass kickplate, mature bushes and
blooming plants all help to create a

If a survey of the inside shows up old -
looking paint and dated wallpaper, then a
new coat of paint is in order. Choose
premium quality paint and remember fill
nail holes and cracks first.
Stick to light light, neutral colors.
Darker tones or trendy shades may offend
potential buyers. Light colors can also
make small rooms seem larger, airier and,
naturally, brighter — all pluses in a resale
market.
A coat of paint and new cupboard and
drawer handles are inexpensive ways of
breathing new life into a tired looking
kitchen. Keep windows clean in order to
let as much light as possible into all
rooms. A home filled with natural light is
much more appealing than a dark,
gloomy place. Place table and floor lamps
strategically to artfully eliminate dark
corners.

There are a few things you can do to
conserve energy. Here is a list of 20
things you can do to save energy and you
hard-earned dollars:
1) Raise your air-conditioning thermostat in
the summer. For each degree higher, you'll
cut your energy use by eight per cent.
2) Turn off incandescent lights when you
are not using them, especially in the
summer when they produce unwanted
heat.
3) Use low -wattage light bulbs in halls
and other places where no close-up tasks
occur. However using a single, high -
wattage bulb is more cost-efficient than
using two lower-wattW bulbs.
4) Long -life light bulbs usually use more
electricity than regular bulbs of the same
wattage. Use long -life bulbs only in
locations where access is difficult.
5) Use high -efficiency light bulbs in your
outside security lights. Put them on a
time or photoelectric switch.
6) Light only the specific area where you
are working— .
7) Grime from cooking, smoking and
dust can dirty a light bulb and reduce the
light it puts out. Inspect and clean bulbs
regularly.

Be especially aware of household odors
caused by smoking and pets. Even
overwatered plants can be a problem — a
pot base collecting water gives off an
unpleasant odor.
Just because you've checked the front
of the house, don't forget the sides and
back. Outdoor furniture should be out as
long as the weather is appropriate. Gaps
in outdoor landscaping can be quickly
repaired by adding a few healthy mature
shrubs and plants. Keep the lawn raked
and mowed.
Before an open house, buy some fresh
flowers for the living room and the
kitchen, bake some cookies or muffins to
fill the kitchen with the inviting aroma of
home cooking, spray a whiff of cologne
in the master bath and wipe down
stainless-steel sinks with a little cooking
oil so they shine as a prospective buyer
surveys kitchen appointments.
Investing a bit of time and a few
dollars here and there can make all the
difference when you're selling your
home.
8) Avoid checking on food while it
cooks. Each time you open your oven
door, 25 per cent of the heat is lost.
9) Cooking in oven -safe glass or ceramic
pans allows you to lower your oven
temperature 25 degrees from what the
recipe calls for.
10) In an electric oven, turn off your oven
15 minutes before the end of the cooking
time. The remaining heat will finish the
job if you don't open the oven door.
11) Partially thaw frozen foods in the
refrigerator before cooking them. In
many cases, thawing foods lets you cut
the cooking time by one third.
12) Use the automatic cycle on your
clothes dryer.
13) Run your garbage disposal with cold
water.
14) Use warm or cold water for washing
clothes and always use a cold rinse. You
also save more money by running full
washer loads. 'i, Y
15) Keep heating and air conditioning
filters clean. It's difficult to force air
through dirty filters.
16) Use fans instead of air conditioning
for cooling whenever you can. Fans use
only about 10 per cent of the energy air
conditioners do.
17) Weatherstrip all doors and windows,
even those in rooms you are not using.
18) Replace your old thermostat with a
newer clock model. These devices can be
set to automatically lower your home's
temperature at bedtime and raise it again
in the morning.
