Cable companies serving Ajax and Picker- ing say they're rethinking their plans to roll the channels most people subscribe to now into a new, more expensive package which includes new specialty stations recently approved by the Canadian Radio -television and Telecommuni- cations Commission (CRTC). The new specialty channels have been showing for free on both Trillium Cable in Pickering and Maclean Hunter Cable in Ajax since the beginning of January. Pickering fire chief Rick Pearsall reports his department responded to a call about a chemical spill at Marcan Transport, at the corner of Bayly Street and Sandy Beach Road, around 9 p.m. "We found a container of a product which was leaking. The plastic container had been ruptured," he says. About 1,500 litres (330 gallons) of the chemical leaked from the container. Diphenyl methane diisolyanate is highly corrosive and hazardous if mixed with water, the chief notes. Mr. Pearsall points out the warehouse is used as a storage and shipping depot by the transport company. "They were loading (the chemical) up to be shipped out. It was on a skid," he says. An environmental company specializing in chemi- cal spills was dispatched to the scene to clean up the mess. A 32 -year-old Pickering resident, an employee of the company, was taken to Ajax -Pickering General hospital where he was treated and released. In tact, they say the criticism, which contradicts the theory that French -immersion programs pro- duce fully bilingual students, con- lains a grain of truth. Oui! `You can take our students to Quebec and they will be able to carry on a totally bilingual conversation: Ridgeway Public School principal Jim Crosbie Proponents of the program point out its success is not mea- sured solely by its ability to pro- duce wholly bilingual students. They argue there are also numerous other spin-off benefits to the program, including improved English comprehension and reading skills as well as increased confidence of students enrolled in the program. While Dr. }sector Hammerly, a professor of applied linguistics in Burnaby. B.C.. acknowledges those added benefits, he says the fact remains that French-immer- Sion students are still "making basic errors" in speech after seven years in the program. "By the time French-immer- Sion students graduate they still make very basic language errors. They speak French very rapidly but it's full of errors. I don't think we can expect fully bilingual indi- viduals, but they shouldn't make any errors." Dr. Hammerly says in a telephone interview. "Grammar of French-immer- Sion students is no better than core French (as a second lan- guage) students when they reach university," he adds. Sue McCartney, whose daugh- ter is a Grade 2 French -immersion student at Frenchman's Bay Pub- lic School in Pickering, has heard all of the criticisms before. As co-chair of the school's parent advisory committee and member of the Durham Chapter of Canadian Parents for French, she's well aware of the challenges facing both parents and students enrolled in the program. "French immersion isn't a mandated program so you're always fighting for it. We spend a lot of time and energy promoting it, which is a shame because it's an excellent program." she says. Mrs. McCartney's response to Dr. Hammerly's criticisms was blunt. Critics of the program "don't have the knowledge of the day -lo - day workings of students in the French -immersion program. Let the children speak. They will tell you how they've benefited from the program. We are hearing from children and their parents they are becoming bilingual. "Them will always be different levels of achievement, but you'll find these in every program. Yes, the students will become bilingual if they spend the extra time study- ing," she says. "We don't create totally bilin- gual students: they are conversa- tionally fluent," says Jim Crosbie. principal of Ridgeway Public School in Oshawa. a French - immersion centred school, which does not offer any English-lan- guage programs other than those taught as part of the immersion program. "But you can take our students to Quebec and they will be able to carry on a totally bilingual con- versation." he adds. French -immersion supporters admit students enrolled in the program lack the language rein- forcement needed to become bilingual because their parents and friends are probably English- speaking. However, even this perceived shortcoming can work in their favor, according to Frenchman's N Bay Public School principal Ile lene Daleman. "One of the first questions par- ents of French immersion students ask is 'How can I help my chil- dren at home.."' My answer is 'Read to them in English' " That bit of advice, and the level of commitment shown by parents of French immersion Stu- dents, have produced some posi- tive results. Mrs. Daleman adds. Ajax senior pleads guilty to molesting AJAX — An Ajax senior accused of sexually molesting neighborhood children in his garage in 1991 and `92 plead- ed guilty to criminal charges in a Whitby courtroom Wednes- day. The 71 -year-old man will be sentenced Feb. 17 at 2 pm. in Ontario Court, General Division in Whitby. "I will be asking the judge for a period of custody and probation, that (the senior) not have any contact with children and be given counselling," says assistant Crown attorney Sue MacLean. The charges stemmed from incidents which occurred between July 1, IVA and Oct_ 2, 1992. During that period, the man molested six girls ranging from five to nine years old, Ms. MacLean says. '"There were six girls who were (the man's) neighbors. Ile would invite them into his garage and give them candy, then he would ask them to touch him. In one case he touched one of the girls over her clothes. lie told the girls not to tell anyone about it." she says. The man was convicted June 3. 1993 on one count of indecent exposure in connec- tion with the incidents. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail and two years' probation at that time. But they counter their critics appropriately: French immersion success isn't measured solely by that objective. Indeed, say Durham Region supporters of French immersion, some of the other benefits of the curriculum include improved English comprehension and reading skills, as well as increased confidence of its students. At any rate, the success of the program (philosopically at least) cannot be argued. It is tuming out students who speak both French and English. And as with students in schools across the country. some do better academically than others. Linguistics professor Hector Hammerly argues the pro- gram is creating a pidgin version of the language he calls 'Frenglish'. He concedes that no one can expect the pro- gram to produce fully bilingual students, but says they "shouldn't make any errors." That's a curious statement considering that many stu- dents who have studied only English in the course of their entire academic years still commit basic language errors. Consequently, the action to take should be simple: review the French -immersion curriculum standards and teach stu- dents appropriately. Dr. Hammerly's position, however, (as well as that of many other opponents of the program) remains unclear. No one has come right out and said French -immersion programs should be scrapped, but they certainly leave that impression with program supporters. Again, French immersion creates a sufficient environ- ment for students to learn Canada's second official lan- guage. Like academic programs the world over, it has areas where improvement is needed. That's where the focus should lie. Dec. 31: shank you. Professor Evans. I found this letter truly refreshing: it ;aye me hope that the last issue Of the News Advertiser in 1994 would provide the last word about tritium in our water. Professor Evans manages to punch holes in scare tactics and fear campaign waged by the Advisory Committee on Emironmental Standards and the Ajax Save the Waterfront Committee. In one paragraph the professor repudiates one statement that both of these groups have harangued tis with — that tritium build-up in our system makes this a particularly dangerous car- cinogen. However, as Professor Evans stated in his let- ter. "Tritium does not bio -concentrate, dais not target specific organs and passes through the body relatively rapidly - Then: was no hinting at the subject, no having to read between the lines, just a simple, straight- forward statement of fact as he krK)wS iL And who is this plain -talking man'' Fie is, according to his letter, a professor at the Universi- ty of Toronto teaching nuclear engineering and environmental chemistry and conducting research in the area of environmental natural scie nce' No apparent axe to gruid and no apparent connection to either side of this issue. In the last paragraph of his letter, Professor Evans speaks to the crux of this issue. It is unfortunate that attempts are being made to stop this plant by intimidating the people of Ajax. Subscribers of both companies will automatically receive and be billed for the new specialty packages unless they contact their cable com- pany to say they don't want the new package — a practice often referred to as "negative option marketing". If they don't want the new package. subscribers will lose the specialty package they have because it will no longer be offered. Cable companies across Canada have been offering similar deals. But on Thursday Rogers Cablesystems Ltd., Canada's biggest cable compa- ny, announced it was backing down from its plans to provide only a big- ger, more expensive specialty pack- age, after receiving a torrent of cus- tomer complaints. (In Durham, Rogers serves Whitby and Oshawa) Rogers says customers will be able to keep their old channels at the old cost. Now everyone is waiting to see what the smaller cornpanies do. Trillium's previous specialty package offered five American and three Canadian channels. His native Mexico City has a population of about 20 million — approximately seven times that of Toronto. There, he attends a private school with 12.000 studenu ranging from kindergarten to university age. Here, the affable 16 -year-old stu- dent attends Grade 11 at Ajax High School and lives with a host family in Pickering. "It's a totally different type of life in Mexico City," says the Rotary Club International exchange student, who's been in Canada since August✓ Oscar became involved in the Rotary Club's exchange program at the urging of his father, a Rgtarian and general manager of a juice -dis- tribution company north of Mexico City. Although Oscar has studied Eng- lish as a second language from the age of four, his primary motivation for taking part in the exchange pro- gram is the need to improve his con- versational English. "nbe most important purpose of the trip was to come bene and study English. If you want a really good job in Mexico you have to speak English," says Oscar, who lives with his mother, who runs a corner store in Mexico City. Despite having to cope with the culture shock of living in Canada for a year. Oscar has learned to make the best of his experience. To ward off his homesickness, Oscar has made a few shopping trips into the city with friends he met while attending high school here. "It feels like home (in Toronto). There are lots of people, buses. taxis and people selling things on the streets. (Toronto) feels almost the same (as Mexico City). There's lot's of movement there.'. fie has also learned to contend with the extreme Canadian weather. Average winter temperatures in Mexico City are around 10 Celsius. compared to below -zero tempera- tures in Canada "We wear shorts (in Mexico City) in the winter. This is the first time I've ever worn a coat and gloves;' says Oscar. "1'd never seen snow except in pictures or the movies." Despite having to hone his Eng- lish language skills while attending high school in a foreign country, Oscar has excellent marks. He says some of the credit has to go to his new Canadian u*chers. "The teachers here are really good," says Oscar. who enjoys Eng- lish and chemistry, but isn't too keen on his physical education class. Oscar, who has two brothers — one a lawyer, the other employed at a bank — and a sister, a university student, would like to be a chemical engineer. The Waterloo squad downed the Raiders 4-0 in the semi-final match to put Ajax -Pickering out of the run- ning for the championship. The Raiders finished round-robin play with two wins and a loss. The IBEW atoms started the tourney with a 4-1 win over Oakville, as Keith Rhodes, Trevor Wilson, Russell Dabuzinskas and Ian Suginomori scored. Two assists went to Derek Polowyk and one apiece to'lbomas Milne, Brian Smart, Steven Balvers. Brent Dallidav and Iason Brookings. The Pickering -based club sent 17 swimmers to the sixth annual Woodbridge Swim Club Lions Invitational, which attracted 341 athletes from I I clubs. Sam McLoughlin, 12, posted idifiressive results, winning the 200 -metre freestyle, the 100m but- terfly, the 50m breaststroke and the 100m individual medley in the boys' 11 -and -12 division. Ile also finished third in the 50m back- stroke. Jordan Bell, 11, placed second in the 100m fly and eighth in the 100m I.M. in boys' I1- and -12 division. David Grose, 12, was fifth in the 50m back. Stingy defence, good goaltending lead `AN novices to three victories AJAX — The Ajax Knights Sharon Chisholm-Re/Max Quality One odnor novice `AA' rep hockey team extended its undefeated streak to eight games with wins in three recent contests. The Knights edged rival Bowmanville 2-1 in league play. Derek Kel- loway and Jason Crete netted goals for Ajax, with an assist to Kyle Cun- ningham. Ajax blanked Barrie 2-0 on goals by Crete and Craig McDonald. Brock Robinson and Crete earned assists. In an exhibition tilt, the Ajacians topped Whitby 5-1. Kelloway led the way with two goals.
