The inquest, ordered by a Belleville coroner following the death of Sara Young at Shan- nonville Motorsports Park in July, is expected to take about a week. says Richard Floyd, assistant Crown attorney for Hastings County. Mr. Floyd notes the inquest's aim is "to determine (Sara's) cause of death and to make rec- ommendations that will avoid a similar tragedy in the future " The inquest will take place at the Hastings County Courthouse in Belleville. Instead, the Pickering widow is taking on the world — well at least the south Pacific, southeast Asia and England. And she'll do it by herself, on a marathon 11 -week trip to all kinds of exotic places most of us only see in travelogues. "I'm not going on one of those tours," says Mrs. Rowley, with a certain disdain for such chaperoned forms of travel. "I'm doing as much as I can from this end but there's a certain amount I have to play by ear. I'll try to do a bit of everything — some on the sea some on a train and some on a plane." It all begins Jan. 18, when she embarks on a flight to Hawaii. "I want to see at least six islands while I'm there." After the island -hopping she'll be off to Melbourne, Australia for a stay with some friends. The Australian leg of her trip will include a ferry ride to Tasmania to visit rela- tives, a scenic train trip to Adelaide, and another rail trek from Sydney to Perth. She recently added the latter to her itinerary after reading a newspaper article about what a wonderful journey it is. Following Australia it's on to the island of Phuket. off mainland Thailand, for two weeks of "rest" after some fairly hectic trav- elling. Mrs. Rowley picked Phuket as a des- tination after seeing it in a travel film. It looks so beautiful and apparently not too many tourists go there yet." After Phuket thea will be Bangkok and Singapore. Mrs. Rowley admits her journey is going to be rather expensive. She originally thoueht she could do it for around S25,000 but expects to go somewhat over that bud- get. Friends and relatives have wondered about the wisdom of such an expenditure. but she doesn't. "1 just told them 'I'm in my 75th year and I'm pushing the boat out.' You don't worry about what it costs." Mrs. Rowley travelled extensively with her husband. Hugh, before he died in July of 1993, and is not worried about embarking, on such a major expedition on her own. In fact, she fondly recalls being, accosted by camel bandits in Tunisia about 15 years ago. "I love riding camels." The bandits shouted obscenities at Mrs. Rowley and an elderly woman she was rid- ing with and threatened to steal their camels. "I said 'like hell you will' and got the camel going. The camel ran and I stayed on it. I don't know whether it sensed something, was wrong or I gave it a push or something. There was one word I was supposed to use. I don't remember — but it wasn't 'mush'." While the possibility of encountering, more bandits doesn't faze Mrs. Rowley. she is rather concerned about losing her lug- gage, something that's happened to her in the past. So she's ordered a special -carry- on" bag in which she plans to put everything she'll take on her journey. tis long as she manages not to lose that bag. she believes everything should he all richt. And it's it program those segments of the population have been demanding for some time now. Although the Blue Box program is costly and. in some ways a victim of its own success, it's a necessary component of waste reduction and will be welcomed by those residents who haven't been able to participate in it earlier. Durham Region officials, however, say they can't have this phase of Blue Box collection up and running until April, even though the provincial government wanted it in place New Year's Day. "Winter isn't a good time to implement a Blue Box service in rural areas because of the snow," explains Durham chairman Gary Herrema. Exactly why that makes a difference when there'll be snow next year too isn't clear, but at least our rural and high-rise neighbors will be soon be able to go blue. There is some good news for the rest of Durham res- idents, as well. While the cost of Blue Box recycling has gone up from S2 million last year to an expected $3 million in 1995, the overall operating cost of the regional recycling centre has dropped from S5.4 mil- lion last year to a predicted $4.8 million this year. Fur- ther, the average annual cost of recycling per house- hold in Durham Region is expected to remain at the 1994 level of $49. Most four- and five-year-old chil- dren are not ready for a full day at school. They may concentrate well in the morning but naturally begin to tine physically and intellectually as the day wears on. Consequently, they will benefit only from the morning activities. It is not going to he an ordinary art exhibit. The portraits of famous Canadian writers like Margaret Atwood, Al Purdy and Leonard Cohen are inspired by Barker Fairley. lie was a Canadian artist who lived from 1887 to 1986 who painted his colleagues in the art world during his 99 years. Mr. Fetherling. a Toronto artist and author of 40 books. says that Mr. Fairley's portraits "left behind a record of his contemporaries in the culture and arts business." But the 21 portraits which Mr. Fetherling has painted of his friends in the Canadian literary world are a lot different from Mr. Fairley's portraits.
