From 3 to 9 p.m. Saturday alone, there were 42 accidents, seven involving injuries. Sgt. He and Ontario Provincial Police Whitby detachment Consta- ble Bill Garnett have some words of warning for winter travellers. Const. If you have ABS brakes, you should depress and steer," observes Const. Garnett. What happened last weekend at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station is too close for comfort. And it clearly underscores the need for more regula- tion of the aging Candu reactors that process nuclear fuel to create electrical power. Nuclear watchdogs like Durham Nuclear Awareness and E:ncrgy Probe -- for all their inflammatory anti provocative language -- have succeeded in shining tho. spotlight of public scrutiny on Ontario Hydro in the wake of the 130 -tonne spill of 'heavy' water on the reac- tor floor. The timing of this latest incident. however, has crys- tallized the focus for those groups as they push for an environmental assessment of the plant before its licence to operate is renewed. In this instance. say Hydro officials, the spill wag contained and there was no imminent danger for sur- rounding residents. But, the nuclear activists are quick to point out. what if the worst case scenario unfolded? This gives the nuclear watchdogs more reason to mobilize and Ming the public at large into their drive for a full and frank assessment of the facility. We support the call for the assessment, as we've done in the past. although we once again caution each side not to draw lines in the sand in preparation for a political war of words. Nuclear safety is too important, as is the need for ongoing, stringent standards monitoring, to let the issue become mired in rhetorical debate. Order an environmental assessment. look closely at the aging structure and support systems, and come clean with the public. They deserve to know that their lives are safe from disaster. There is far too much at stake here for anyone to argue otherwise. Firefighters can now identify their personal vehi- cles with a flashing green light when they respond to emergencies, Ontario Trans- portation Minister Mike Far- nan announced recently. The lights will identify full-time and volunteer fire- fighters' vehicles, like blue lights on snowplows, but will not provide any special privileges. Firefighters' vehicles are also identifiable by special licence -plate stickers distrib- uted in October. A committee of police, firefighters and government officials recommended the flashing green lights. Last week, the legislature approved a private mem- ber's bill which amends the Highway Traffic Act to allow the flashing green lights. DEATH NOTICE Dec. 14, 1994 JOHN C. HAMILTON John C. The idea, through retrofitting, is to provide local homeowners with savings on their utility bills, reduce infrastructure costs and ensure environmentally responsi- ble growth. ReCAP is a unique organiza- tion in that has been set up to help homeowners reduce their energy and water use and has no vested interest when entering homes, other than to assist homeowners to achieve savings," ReCAP manager Tracy Patterson said. Using energy efficient light bulbs. placing a water block in toi- let tanks and using more efficient shower heads are some ways to reduce energy costs. Conservation also reduces the need to expand regional services such as water treatment plants. Over the next three years ReCAP staff will visit 15,000 homes to provide expert assistance to homeowners to help them con- serve water and energy. Homeowners will also receive a free kit, sponsored by local industries, containing energy and water savings devices. Ms. Patterson said that some energy-saving modifications pay for themselves in less than six months. _ 74e'74eidX I "A show displaying; a wonderful variety of handcrafted treasures." Sunday, December 18, 9 a.m. 5 P.me Metro East Trade Centre a (Located directly behind Antique Market) Free admission. Michael Niznik, president of the Durham Region Pharmacists Association, says education of doctors, pharmacists and patients can reduce drug plan costs dra- matically. With that in mind, he's met with some medical practitioners A 1 di ;d an emp overs to scuss t ens. And, be plans further meetings for the public. physicians and pharmacists. Mr. Niznik notes one business in Brant County instituted sever- al reforms and realized a 25 per cent sa%ings on its drug plan costs. "Those savings occurred in spite of a nearly 20 per cent annual rise in costs." reports Mr. Niznik. "Their costs didn't rise. thev didn't stay the same. they actual- ly dropped." There are several ways to cut costs, most of which revolve around the idea that there are many drugs of varying prices which will provide the same effect. "Patients, pharmacists and physicians need to understand they don't have to use the Cadil- lac drug every time." says Mr. Niznik. He explains huge savings can be realized by using a drug which is taken three times a day rather than a pricier one that is taken once per day. In other cases top-of-the-line medications are prescribed when lesser drugs would do the job in the vast majority of instances. Mr. Niznik says there's no rea- son prescriptions couldn't be written to take advantage of cheaper prices while maintaining patient care. The use of generic drugs is also a possibility. "It's our professional respon- sibility to give patients the best, most cost-effective care possible. I'm not going to make more money under this plan. I'm try- ing to help our patients. The education process has begun with employers and has thus far met with "moderate suc- cess", according to Mr. Niznik. The Pharmacists Association hopes to also educate doctors to provide cost-effective drugs to their patients even if they are on a drug plan. Lung Association president Car- olyn Greer. RIVETT "He hasn't even had the decency to phone SPORTS REPORTER me why he couldn't make that date." says DURHAM — Hundreds of region youngsters are still waiting for trophies from the Durham Tier 1 Soccer League three months after the end of the outdoor soccer season. All 64 teams in the loop, which provides select -level soccer for youths across Durham, have yet to receive participation trophies which were to have been distributed in early September. The long delay in delivery of the trophies. worth an estimated $9,600, has upset officials of the Durham Region Soccer Association (DRSA). the governing body of minor soccer here. DRSA president Alf Huggins reports the DRSA executive received assurances on several occasions from Durham Tier l league president Mark Ufford that the trophies would be delivered, but they weren't. "It's at a point where I can't take his word. He's given me dates (for trophy distribution) and he hasn't fulfilled anv of these dates. -says Huggins. "Anybody who has been promising since September to deliver the trophies and can't deliver them by December — something is wro ng." Huggins says he spoke to Ufford prior to the DRSA's annual meeting Dec. 4. Huggins received assurances from Ufford the trophies would be delivered this past Saturday. That day passed without delivery of the trophies or an explanation from Ufford. Ufford explains the trophies weren't distributed Saturday due to a lack of volunteers to deliver them to representatives of the various soccer clubs which make up the league. "We all have work and other things to do." says Mr. Ufford. "We all feel bad about it." However. Ufford claims the trophies will be delivered to club representatives by Tier l soccer league registrar Roy Cowling "sometime between Wednesday and Saturday of this week". The DRSA met in Oshawa Tuesday. after our press deadline, to discuss the trophy issue. Huggins says the executive will send a registered letter to Ufford. asking for full financial disclosure from the Tier 1 league which took in an estimated S12.800 this past season. The DRSA is also asking that if Ufford has the trophies that they he distributed immediately. If not, the DRSA will take over the matter and purchase and distribute the trophies no later than Jan. 15 and bill the Dint= Tier t Soccer League. Moreover. if Ufford fails to respond to the letter within seven days. the DRSA will begin legal action against him, says Huggins. "If he can't produce these financial documents within seven days, then we'll have no choice but to pursue it through legal channels. We have to get an answer." says See LO` G...P2gc A30 0 • WINNERS Family Fashions • LIVERPOOL MEDICAL • DENTAL CLINIC • 2-4E-1 PIZZA • SCRUPLES ONE Hair Design • SILVER DOLLAR Nothing over a dollar • BULK BARN FOOD ATHENA BOOKS Fill Four Christmas Wish List Here! I Protecting Your Home from Winter's Icy Clutches This article is provided by local Realtors and the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA) for the benefit of consumers in the real estate market. b Now that the very last leaves of autumn have made their way into the composting bin, it's time once again to turn your thoughts to protecting your home from the icy grasp of winter. After all, you want your home to provide the maximum amount 0 of warmth and comfort at a reasonable cost. — By doing a few relatively simple things in and around your home now, before the real deep freeze sets in, you can avoid unpleasant surprises down Ab =- the road --and possibly reduce your heating costs at the same time. Reducing drafts and heat loss by caulking and weatherstripping for instance, can have a major impact on the energy efficiency of your home. Test Windows & Doors To see if your home could use some reinforcement, try testing your doors and windows to see how they stand up. Take a feather or a piece of tissue paper and hold it around the edges of your doors and windows. If you detect movement in the feather or tissue, chances are you're losing some heat through poor seals or cracks. And this, of course, translates directly into higher heating bills. If you find that you do have leaks, the situation can usually be easily remedied by applying some caulking or weatherstripping around the edges of your windows and doors. Or, if you find you have a draft blowing in beneath your door, consider installing a doorsweep. Consult Experts To find out which type of remedy is best for your particular situation, try talking to the experts at your local hardware or building supply store. They should be able to recommend a suitable product. Also try consulting some home maintenance books. or publications put out by the government and government -related agencies. You can also consider installing temporary storm windows. Available in kits, these are made of plastic which shrinks to fit your window frame when you apply the heat of a hair dryer. If cost isn't a major concern, you may even want to consider installing some new windows or a new door. For windows in particular, you may also want to consider installing some of the new insulating window coverings now available on the market. Attic Also check your attic to see if your insulation needs topping up. Old insulation can become damp from condensation and worn down, thereby losing its effectiveness. By topping it up or replacing it altogether, you should see a noticeable improvement. You can do this yourself or hire an expert. Either way, make sure you use products that are approved and highly rated for their insulation value. If you're a "do-it- yourselfer," make sure you take the necessary precautions. Walls If you have an older home with very little insulation in the walls, you know the effect that a good strong wind can have on your home --it feels like someone left a window open. To remedy the situation, you may want to consider having insulation blown in from the outside. Be sure you shop around before making your final decision and find out as much about w available products as you can. While checking your house, also make sure you take a good look at your basement. Check for any cracks or holes in the walls and inspect window openings for a loose fit. By taking these simple precautionary measures, you can help protect your home from the worst winter has to offer --and save a little extra money at the same time. r -s wa ; : ■ ss nes iT 0 411 n cam NEW CHOICE m. f..,,. ?"""-p.r— 'A% ANLL a "&.4 'IiAG,P I D71 .•oaf A e $4.175 &s"d a a..r...r«.. ' Education Makes Ontario Realtors Among Highest Qualified Anywhere This article is provided by local Realtors and the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA) for the benefit of consumers in the real estate market Being a Realtor is a demanding occupation. It requires a great deal of flexibility, motivation and dedication. And, most importantly, it demands a high degree of education. In fact, thanks to high educational standards, registered salespeople and brokers in Ontario are among the most highly qualified anywhere in the world. If you're seriously thinking about becoming a real estate practitioner, you should know that you'll have to take a series of educational courses. The first group of courses consists of three phases, known as "Real Estate as a Professional Career." The first phase is a two-month correspondence course, which will give you a general overview of the benefits and limitations of a real estate career. It also covers the requirements for registration as a salesperson as well as the mathematical skills necessary to handle typical transactions. Phase one is offered directly by the Ontario Real Estate Association, all other courses are also offered by 21 community colleges across the province. Phase two consists of a 60 -hour classroom course which wll introduce you to the technical aspects of real estate practice such as the federal and provincial statutes that impact the real estate profession. Phase three is a little longer in duration --consisting of 90 classroom hours. It is essentially a workshop where you will learn the practical aspects of real estate transactions. You'll gain first-hand experience in exercises such as evaluating properties, qualifying purchasers and preparing the offer. After successfully completing these phases, you'll have up to a year to apply for registration as a salesperson. Certificate Program Once you receive probationary registration as a real estate salesperson, you'll be required to complete two years of an apprenticeship --known as articling- -with a real estate brokerage. During this first two years, you'll work under the guidance of a broker and be expected to successfully complete three more courses --known as articling courses. These are each 40 hours in duration. The first, called Real Property uno"L TE AJAX 428-7677 If AL MA ■ SERVICE PICKERING 831-7677 NRS ACHIEVERS REAL ESTATE SERVICES ART SHOPPE DECOR Freehold in Whitby. 3 bedrooms with large duvets. The second, called Principles of Appraisal, will teach you how to accurately appraise property and is designed to develop your ability to w evaluate property for listing, marketing and financing. The third, entitled Principles of 8 Mortgage Financing, explores the legal, mathematical and procedural a aspects of mortgage financing. o Throughout all of these courses, you'll discover why accuracy and thoroughness are hallmarks of the real estate profession. loaeiof lot cturloAAEnfI, Ilsr still. t+1q tls4000 Don't forget to take advantage of our 'FREE LONG DISTANCE- telephone JILL SMITH; calls to the Toronto Extended Calling Arses (Aurora, Oakville, Richmond Hill, Stouffville, etc.) 683-1790 Call as often as you want and talk as long as you want from your touch tone phone.
