Astronomer will tune in to the sounds of next week's meteor shower
By AL RIVE -IT
STAFF RFPORTF.R
AX - An Ajax man doesn't
treed a telescope to check out one of
the biggest meteor showers of the
year this month. Rather, he'll he lis-
tening in on the phenomenon.
Phil Gebhardt, 49, an amateur
radio astronomer, says he'll be tun-
ing in to the yearly meteor shower
called the Geminids, which will
reach its peak on the morning of
Wednesday. Dec. 14. A meteor
shower occurs when the earth pass-
es through a stream of meteors,
which are rertutants of comets.
How do you listen to a meteor
shower'? In the same way you
would observe a meteor shower
through a telescope. you use an FM
radio and antenna to hear the radio
waves bouncing off the meteor
shower particles and return to earth.
These radio signals `scatter' back to
earth, enabling listeners to briefly
bear FM radio signals from 450 to
1,300 miles away.
"With radio astronomy, you get
a different perspective of what's out
there. It's something you can bear.
but can't see," explains Mr. Geb-
hardt, who's been involved in radio
astronomy for fix, past severs yeas.
The Geminids are a boon for
radio astronomers as this particular
meteor shower. one of literally hun-
dreds which occur tach year, lasts
for a long duration. This year's
Geminids start on Tuesday. Dec. 13
at 10 pm. and last until Dec. 14 at 6
am.. says Mr. Gebhardt. _The radio
waves bouncing off the Geminids
could theoretically scatter radio sig-
nals as far away as the Bahaamw..
During past Cierninids. he's been
able to pick up a radio station in
Panama City, Florida. atx)ut 1,000

Back to the future
The old adage must be true: you can't keep a good
man down.
Such is the case with Durham chairman Gary flerre-
ma, who returned unopposed this week to sit as the head
of Durham council. Mr. Ilerrema has been a political fix-
ture in Durham Region for nearly two decades and has
fought tirelessly in those intervening years to push the
region -- and its growing population -- ever forward.
The chairman has been battling cancer for years but
continues to find the energy to commit the time required
to direct our busy little corner of the world. We support
Mr. fierrema's acclamation, because he has experience,
familiarity with the issues and a solid core of support
from his council colleagues.
We wish him well in his ongoing battle against can-
cer, and are confident he will continue to keep pushing
ahead with the many issues facing his regional con-
stituents but...
Furthermore
...we believe this should be the last time the regional
chairman is appointed to the top post in Durham without
public participation.
Certainly Mr. fierrema is largely responsible, as the
head of regional council. for the success of Durham. But
as the Region grows, so to does the importance of elec-
toral involvement in terms of the chairmanship.
In the coming years, we will call for reform of the
Municipal Elections Act to create a provision requiring
the election of regional council chairman by the public.
It will create clearer mandates for those elected. as
well as accountability to the people who foot the bill -
That is democracy.

To the editor:
The recent jury verdict of sec-
ond degree murder against Bob
Latimer of Saskatchewan for the
murder of his 12 -year-old dis-
abled daughter must be consci-
entiously and morally applauded.
The fact that she was disabled
she deserved more love and
compassion.
She did not need her father's
misplaced and ill-advised mercy.
There was obviously another
more worthy and dignified solu-
tion.
Tracy could have been born
perfectly healthy and been
injured in an automobile acci-
dent to the point of disability:
would Mr. Latimer then elimi-
nate her because she's disabled:'
I guess not.
Why?
Because there'll be lots of
insurance money to look after
Tracy as well as to help the
Latimer's do whatever.
We are ever looking for a
shortcut to solve problems that
are beyond us, creating larger
and far-reaching problems.
A recent case comes to mind
in which a husband in the United
States killed his wife, afflicted
with Alzheimer's disease.
because he could no longer stand
her suffering,
lie too was providing mercy
for his wife at the point of a gun.
The prosecutor had one of the
most clever legal arguments I
ever heard to have the than con-
victed of murder.
The prosecutor argued that
rather than killing his wife to get
her out of her sufferings, he was
seeking a way of escape for him-
self to get out of his responsibili-
ty to care for her.
Perhaps Mr. Latimer faced
this dilemma of Tracy's care and
allowed himself to believe a lie
to terminate the life of his
daughter.
lie must face the conse-
quences for his actions while the
courts must send a national mes-
sage to all those who may want
to arbitrarily terminate a life for
convenience.

DURHAM — General Motors,
along with other members of the
Big Three automakers and the
Canadian Auto Worker's Union,
have launched an assistance pro-
gram for harassed or physically -
abused women.
"It's an initiative which we firm-
ly believe will contribute greatly to
a better understanding of the serious
concerns women hold about all
forms of violence against them,
from verbal and sexual harassment
to physical assault, in the work-
place, at home or elsewhere," says
Dean Munger, GM Canada's vice
president of personnel.
The Workplace Women's Advo-
cate Program provides female
employees with the opportunity to
speak confidentially with other
women about issues such as domes-
tic violence or workplace harass-
ment. Advocates in the workplace
are specially trained to provide
guidance to troubled women and,
wrttere appropriate, to direct them to
such community resources as pro-
fessional counsellors or women's
shelters.
CAW communications director
Jane Armstrong said the program
carne out of 1993 bargaining with
the Bio Three automakers.
"About five per cent of our
workforce is female," says Ms.
Armstrong. "We wanted to provide
people who could help with access
to services which already exist in
the community"
Harassment takes many forms
and might not be work related. It
can ranee from pin-ups in the work-
place to more serious problems of
domestic violence, Ms. Armstrong
says.
"Women are entitled to go about
their business and do their jobs in
an atmosphere of support and
respect and we are determined to do
what we can to ensure that this is
always the case," Mr. Munger says.
About 35 women have been
given training to deal with issues
and problems which could arise.
There are harassment policies in
place both with the CAW and with
the employers' zero -tolerance pro-
gram. Part of the advocate program
is to ensure access to these policies.
Ms. Armstrong Says.

says the 10 -year-old Ajax student
who is now in Grade 5. 1 didn't
think my story would be published.-
The

pirates who sail through the seas
looking for lost treasure, the Mcker-

treasure," she says.
Robyn makes it clear that she
wants to write children's books for a

"I want to grow up to be a chd-

So, how do I find these Villas in France? Easy -
write one or two exchange clubs and ask for
information. They'll send you a package which
describes how the program works and some sample ads from their
book. Both exchanges publish three times a year. They list homes,
apartments, farms, ranches from ali over the world - many with
pictures.
These books have been described as "made to order dream books,
worth the membership fee for its entertainment value alone."
The fee for listing your home runs approximately S35 and this
provides you with three listings during the year. Members who are
interested in swapping write directly to you, propose the swap and
give you details of their home. it's your choice to proceed or pass.
And without going into a lot of detail, that's all there is to it.

Just about one month ago
Elizabeth Haug celebrated her
grand opening of heedful Things, a
delightful store boasting very
unique crafts that are ideal for your
home, or to give as gifts that will be
appreciated for years to come.
Elizabeth is a former real estate
agent who has taken numerous
courses in interior decorating.
The creative floral designer
offers, through Needful Things,
arrangements starting from $25.
Clients include individuals as well
as corporate account,.
In recent months, the Pickering
Flea Market has proven to be a
good base for Elizabeth's business,
however, she has also been
involved in craft and trade shows.
With the excellent response to her
products, Elizabeth was encouraged
to open the approximately 1,000 sq.
ft. retail space at 956 Dillingham
Rd. in Pickering.
Because the location is "off the
major trail", the result is it operates
with relatively lower overheads.
This enables Elizabeth to keep her
prices at an attractively affordable
level.
Elizabeth says "We all appreciate
trice things like lace and good
quality but we also want to be
economical"
Inexpensive, quality gifts is
exactly what you will find at
Products at Christmas Craft Show
Needful Things:
An inviting
store gives you
10% for grand
opening specials
Needful Things. In addition, many
items are custom designed. The
store owner points out that
customers frequently bring in fabric
pieces from their homes to co-
ordinate with the decorative works
they require.
Another option available to clients
is that Elizabeth will go to their
homes to design -displays to fit."
Awkward corners are easily filled
with Elizabeth's creative abilities.
And best of all, clients always end
up paying a price that is a fraction
of what most would normally expect
to pay.
Floral arrangements, swags, folk
art, angels and santas are among the
unique items you'll find at this
store. Hobo santas and advent
wreaths are especially popular right
now.
Other products are bouquets of
Victorian and dried flowers, a wide
assortment of Christmas ornaments,
folk art candlestick holders, throw
pillows and cabinet accessories.
There is also a large selection of
scented and beeswax candles.
A line of photo albums, ideal for
wedding photos, finished in lace or
other colorful material, sells for $25
to $65.
Specialty products include animal
or birdhouse lamps, complete with
stenciled shades. Gourmet jams,
coffees. spices, gourmet teas and
gourmet hot chocolate are growing
in popularity.
Corporate clients will appreciate
the store's specialty gift baskets,
which include such items as pot
pourri and pot poum pots, specialty
candles and cherubs - all items that
are unique and can be used by the
one receiving it for a very long time.
Another novel idea is gift
certificates. available in any
denomination. This is the perfect
way to give someone a gift that they.
in turn, can choose for themselves.
.Needful Things has a 25% -off
table, but in addition, there is an
opening special that allows 10% off
all the regular priced items.
The store is open at 10 a.m. Mon.
to Sat. On Thurs. and Fri. it is open
till 8 p.m. for customer convenience
and until 6 p.m. Mon. through Wed.
and Sat.
You'll still be able to find Needful
Things at the Flea Market at least
until the end of December. For the
next two Sundays in December, you
will also find its products at the
Metro East Trade Centre Christmas
Craft Show in Pickering.
If you are looking for a truly
unique custom gift or decorative
item for your home, you need to
visit Needful Things, or call 839-
6333.
Why Advertise In Focus on Business
Durham businesses wanting to increase their profile and sales volume find that being a
part of the Focus on Business advertising feature definitely has its advantage.
Over the last few years a great many businesses - of all sizes - have found that
investment in the Ajax/Pickering News Advertiser's and Oshawa/Whitby This Week's
Focus on Business feature have generated extra phone calls that likely would not have
otherwise occurred.
How do you get involved?
When a company makes a commitment to advertise for 10 weeks on the page, it also
receives a full feature story, complete with pictures.
The story reinforces the advertisement, enabling the business to explain in depth its
product and/or service, philosophy, goals, special promotions and even a historical
overview.
Unless the business chooses otherwise, everything is done by the newspaper's staff: the
ad design, story interview and writing, plus the taking of the photographs.
ALI the business needs to do is preparo for the increased sales volume. For. more
