"The key to success is to rec- ognize we are one of many com- munity partners, that our specific responsibilities are education and that we recognize we can't work in isolation," she says. To that end, Mrs. Schedlich feels the board must improve the way it communicates with Durham Region's taxpayers. "It's an area we've been criti- cized for in the past. We have to keep the community informed as to what's going on at the school board." Trustees also elected the chairs and vice -chairs of other key committees at last night's meeting. Those include: ❑ Oshawa trustee Audrey MacLean as chair of the stand- ing committee. ❑ Beaverton trustee Bill Fair- Auction raises $9,000 for AJAX/PICKERING - More than $9,000 was raised by the United Way of Ajax/Pickering's Live Auction at the Ajax Com- munity Centre Sunday. Items donated by local busi- nesses and individuals were auc- tioned off to the highest bidders as the United Way inched closer to its fund-raising goal of $1 mil- lion for distribution to its mem- ber agencies. A few of the items auctioned off were a trip to Florida; a champagne balloon ride; auto- graphed celebrity shirts and posters; golf passes and Y lessons; com- pact discs; food certificates from local restau- rants and theatre tickets. Bids ranged from as law as $7 to as high as 5905, auction co- ordinator Mary Cook says. Although the number of peo- ple who turned out to the auction was much lower than anticipated — between 50 and 60 people according to organizers — those on hand for the event were active bidders. "It wasn't a huge turnout, but the ones who came were very interested in supporting the Ilnit- ed Way and the result was a lot of bidding activity," says execu- tive director Dennis Goulin. Mr. Goulin says the amount raised through this year's live auction also surpassed the amount raised through last year's burn as vice -chair of the standing committee. Approximately 150 people filled the council chambers at the civic complex as the Pickering Concert Band performed, then later crammed the lobby to enjoy some post -cere- monial cake and refreshments. A common theme during the some- times emotional speeches given by council members was tackling quali- ty -of -life issues in Pickering. All councillors agreed that Mayor Arthurs' campaign slogan: "making a good town better" will form the blueprint for their terms of office. After hearing all inaugural addresses, Mayor Arthurs concurred "what very high expectations we have and people have of us. Yet, many of our lofty goals are attain- able. - He plans a Safe Communities Program involving police, the Town and community groups, as well as job creation, taxation and communi- ty involvement. The mayor also hopes for more participation in Town matters. "it is through increased involvement that we will maintain the quality of life in Pickering that makes our town a great place to live." New Councillor Dave Ryan affirmed his commitment to being accessible as an active member of the community. He believes Picker- ing has -come of age and is no longer a sleepy little bedroom com- munity on the edge of Metro Toron- to." Ward ? rookie Councillor Sherry Senis is anxious to see Pickering become the town by which all others treasure their success. "It's a great place to live and we can make it even better without spending a lot of money; just by using good old-fash- ioned common sense." New Regional Councillor David Farr's number -one concern is the customer: residents and businesses. "It's time to get to work," he said. Thankful for "another opportuni- ty to serve " is Ward 3 Councillor Enrico Pistritto. He feels taxes and safety are the biggest issues and wants to "get to the hearts and minds of the eomin unity. We as a council need to listen with an open mind with the intent to understand". Entering a third term as Regional Councillor, Rick Johnson reflected on how he has changed personally over the years and what he will be able to contribute. It is "exciting to raise a family in the community where you have input," he said. In his third and "most difficult" inaugural speech, Regional Council- lor Maurice Brenner dedicated the "next three years to working on the quality of life, dignity and respect of people in the town". In memory of his sister who just lost a 14 -year bat- tle with Multiple Sclerosis last week, Coun. Brenner vows to attain these goals through "action, access and accessibility. We need people-Insed services to ensure a better people place for Picketing — be it for the young, the olid or the disabled". Project X is a Durham -based needle exchange program which could save a life, maybe even yours. The program doesn't promote drug use, but was estab. lished as a meaes to contain the deadly outbreak of HIV and Hepatitis B. And the figures bear out the fact that it is a problem in Durttam and one that could get put of hand if not dealt with appropriately. These blood-bome diseases are both trans- ferred through intravenous drug use: the John Howard Sai- ety. which administers the program, doesn't encourave the further use of ille-al drugs through Project X. Under the program. intravenous drug users return used needles and exchange them for clean ones. In addition, drug users are provided with bleach to cleanse the syringes. con- doms to encourage safe sex, information, counselling and referrals to organizations to get them free of the drugs. Project X is going through some growing pains. A recent open forum in Pickering was virtually ignored by the public but Durham residents should remember that though they are a 30 -minute drive from downtown Toronto they aren't isolated from drug abuse. A potentially dangerous needle can show up on the Lake Ontario beach front here just as easily as it could in a Metro Toronto neighborhood. For people to bury their heads din the sand and say there isn't a problem is dangerous for everyone. This type of reasoning shifts responsibility for this toxin away from the polluter, and drops those costs and responsibilities right in the laps of unsuspecting families and comntmsies who will have to absorb the impact of degraded health and a sickened environ - Your editorial states that Ontario Hydro provided some "frightening figures", waning that if they are forced to comply with a 100 Bq/t. tritium standard it will cost the utility in excess of S 1 bil- bon. Rather than keeping tritium emissions as low as reasonably achievable, setting the limit at 7,000 Bq/L simply keeps the floodgates open so that as reactors age, and tritium spills become worse, even greater amounts of In- tium can be dumped without regu- latory consequences. Bud Wildman, Ontario's Min- ister of Environment and Energy promised a decision this fall on what the new tritium standard will be. He should not buckle under Hydro's economic pressure. He should support the recommenda- tions for what may be either the ultimate betrayal or the first step towards restoring our supply of fresh water to pristine condition. Limiting tritium in drinking water to 100 Bq/L immediately is an excellent, reasonable step towards an eventual goal of zero discharge for this dangerous toxin. Needle exchange programs like that being tested here do work in getting used syringes off the street. which could reduce the incidence of HIV infection in Durham. experts saki. Felicity Nelson of the John Howard Society, which carries out the needle exchange program from its Oshawa location, and Ken Ng of the Durham Region Health Depart- ment, said Project X was developed as a means to contain the outbreak of HIV and Hepatitis B infection here. Intravenous drug users return their used needles and exchange them for clean ones. They also receive a bleach kit to cleanse the syringes, condoms to encourage safer sex, information, counselling and referrals to organizations that m. help them get off drugs. "We see the needle exchange as a disease prevention, health issue." Mrs. Nelson said. -We certainly don't condone it. but we're not here to discuss the actual drug user's habit." To ensure you and vour loved ones have a safe and happy festive season, local fine departments have some tips you can follow to reduce the risk of a blaze occurring. When buying a Christmas tree. always buy a freshly cut one, because a dry tree can burn like a torch and spread the fire quickly. If the needles are shedding or break when bent. choose another tree. Here are two freshness tests to try: Grab a branch about 15 cen- timetres (six inches) from the tip and pull your hand toward the tip. allowing the branch to slip through your fingers. Needles shouldn't fall off in vour hand. The second test is to lift the tree and then bang the stump end on the ground. The outside green nee- dles shouldn't fall off in substan- tial numbers. Keep the tree outside with the trunk in water or a snowbank until you're ready to decorate it. &.fore bringing the tree in. cut from one to three inches diagonally off the base. In a wnv ho hnv U»" By SAL BOMMARITO STAFF REPORTER PICKERING — For four -and -a -half years, the Stanton family anticipated the day which finally arrived on Thursday, Dec. I. On that day, the man responsible for the disappearance and murder of their youngest daughter Julie on Easter Monday, April 16, 1990 was put behind bars for good. And, in the few seconds it took for a jury foreman to say "guilty of first-degree murder", the Stantons had finally accom- plished what they had set out to do — to bring about the conviction of Peter Stark for murdering their 14 -year-old daughter, a former honors student at Dunbarton High School in Pickering. They had done so with the help of Durham Regional Police detective Harold Curwain, Crown attorneys John Scott and Greg O'Driscoll, and about 80 prosecution witnesses who testified during months of legal proceedings which culminated in a criminal trial. The task of getting Mr. Stark convicted kept the family strong and united through- out the long ordeal. It began when an unsuspecting Julie was lured to her death by her former best friend's father. He coaxed her into his car near her home on Maury Crecent, telling her he wanted to take her to lunch to dis- cuss problems he was having with his daughter, Kim. "What's kept me going these last four years is Peter Stark's conviction," recalls the teen's mother Pat Stanton. Mrs. Stanton . along with husband John, daughter Kerry and son Tony, remained focused on their goal through months of gruelling legal pro- ceedings. It was only after the verdict was announced did family and friends of the slain teen finally let their emotions show. Emotions ranged from relief that the ordeal was finally over, to sadness that one job '''' ......................,...-,..,...........,...............................................,.,.....I......... I never slept very well last night," Mrs. Stanton said Friday, the day after the seven -man, five -woman jury announced its guilty verdict. I was wide awake all night_ Today. I feel a real calm. An angry Mr. Stanton tracked down Mr. Stark at a Niagara -area trailer park where he had recently moved. Mr. Stark stead- fastly refused a face-to-face meeting despite Mr. Stanton's attempts to confront his daughter's killer. "He's a very clever man. Very cun- ning," Mrs. Stanton says. Although Mr. Stark had been questioned by police a week after the girl's disappear- ance, it took investigators almost two years to build the case against him. But his involvement in Julie Stanton's disappearance was not Mr. Stark's first brush with the law. i Almost 20 years before Julie disap- peared, Mr. Stark had been convicted of stabbing a female hitchhiker he picked up on liwy. 401. lie only served six months in prison as his victim was too scared to testi- fy against him. Police also suspected Mr. Stark was responsible for the suspicious disappear- ance of a former lover, although they couldn't prove it. The woman's remains i were found five years after she disap- peared. Now, his future is one that will unfold behind bars after his conviction of first- degree murder in connection with the pop- ular Pickering teen's death_ The conviction carries an automatic life prison sentence with no possibility of parole for 25 years. However. the Stanton's ordeal is far from over. The family won't rest until their daughter's body is recovered and a memor- ial service is held. "1 was hoping one day that (Mr Stark) would crack (and tell them where he hid Uv: girl's boli). But I don't think he will. I'd go for any bargain just to get Julie's remains. Doctn�''g�fs n medical a O Document has `emotional value' for Pickering man By KEITH GILLIGAN STAFF REPORTER PICKERING - It was a long time in coming, but Ataollah Eshragh has his Russian doc- tor's diploma. The Pickering resident went to medical school in Russia in the 1930s, but only received his diploma last year when it was found at the University of Kazan. Mr. Eshragh, who turned 90 recently. spent six years at the university, starting in 1931. Other graduates of the university include Vladimir Ilyich Lenin and Leo Tolstoy. After finishing university, he went to Tadzhikistan to do a two-year medical internship. At the end of his internship, he requested a move to another area in the Soviet Union, but was denied, so he moved back to Iran. His diploma wasn't ready when be returned to Iran, so he didn't get it. Upon returning to Iran, he wrote the medical test and received a diploma written in Persian. For four years during the Second World War, he worked in the Kurdistan area of Iran. Originally from a village near Meshed in northeastern Iran, he returned there after the war and spent 40 years working as a doctor. A member of the Baha'i faith, he had sought to transfer to a medical clinic in Meshed, but he was refused because of his r e l i g i o n. Instead, he set up his own clin- ic. With his daughter Faezeh Menshari trans- lating, the Per- sian -speaking Mr. Eshragh says, "One of my wishes was to get my original documents from Russia. It real- ly means a lot for me. It has no material value, but it has emo- tional value." When a friend said she was going to Russia, be asked if she was going to Kazan and if so, would she check at the univer- sity for his diploma? A male friend of the woman works at the university and after a four- month search, he found the doc- ument. There were 43 documents in ch.._ip16 years , 14W Mr. Eshragh and his wife Talat live with Mrs. Menshari in Pickering. Another daughter lives in the Toronto area and two daughters live in Vancou- ver. all, including his high school and university marks. He received the documents in July of last year and now, whenever he travels, he takes the documents with him. It was more than 50 years in coming, but Ataollah Eshragh has his med- ical school diploma from the University of Karo in Russia. "It was the first time they collectively played 60 minutes of hockey at the intensity level needed for junior 'A'. 1{opefully, this will carry over for the games to come." Harvey's peewees tourney champions PICKERING The Pickering Panthers Harvey's Liverpool Road major peewee 'AA' rep hockey team captured the championship of the Pickering 'AA' Tournament last weekend. The Panthers drubbed the St. Catharines Royals 6-0 in the final game. After leading 3-0 after two periods, Pickering added three more markers in the final period to clinch the victory. Jesse Meldrum and Sean Docherty each notched hat tricks in the contest to lead Pickering to the win. Kevin Oakley. Mike Faria. Docherty and James Pascaris drew assists. Panthers goalie Paul Guthrie was outstanding, especially in the second frame when he turned back a flurry of St. Catharines' shots. Pickering defeated Bowmanville 3-1 in the semi- final match. In the title contest on Sunday, Pickering met up against a strong host SL Catharines team, a squad they had defeated in an exciting round-robin encounter earlier in the tournament. Again, the Slo- Sports petites erne up with a solid effort to earn a 6-4 victory. The last three minutes of the championship was especially hair- raising for the Pickering squad as they held off a hard -charging St. Catharines team while playing two players short. Melanie Curran and Jenna Clements scored twice in the title game, with singles to Sarah Barnes and Lindsay Civello. The team received solid defensive efforts from Tara Edwards and Denise Spofford. Pickering started the tournament on Saturday by humbling Hamilton 5-1. Clements scored twice, with Civello, Curran and Courtney Puddister tallying once. St. Catharines was the next opponent for Pickering, with the Slo-Sports petites earning a 7-4 victory in an exciting contest.
