Officers from Durham Region, Metro Toronto, York Region and Ontario Provincial Police will meet at Steeles Avenue at the Pickering - Scarborough Town Line at 5 pm. for the kickoff. Durham Regional Police will dedicate six full-time officers to the R.I.D.E. program and will supplement the program when other officers are available. OPP's Whitby detachment will have all patrolling officers keep a look -out for dnm k drivers. "We're pleased with the verdict,,, assistant Crown attorney Greg O'Driscoll said on behalf of Crown attorney John Scott, absent from the media scrum. "It was a real ordeal. It's been a long and difficult case. But it doesn't change what's happened to Julie and what the family has suffered. I'd just like to spend some time with the family right now. I have no further comment at this time," Mr. O'Driscoll said. The Crown's case was bared pri- marily on circumstantial evidence, since Julie's body hasn't been found and no murder weapon recovered. The Crown called about 80 wit- nesses during the trial, which began in early October, to prove their case against Mr. Stark, who admitted through his lawyer he picked up the Dumbarton High School honors stu- dent Easter Monday, April 16, 1990 near her Maury Crescent home. However, Mr. Stark has main- tained he dropped the girl off near the Pickering Town Centre after tak- ing her to lunch at Harvey's that day, then went back to his boat where he slept until 4 pm. Legislation to be introduced in the House of Commons within the next two months may set an age requirement for col- lecting pensions and end `double-dipping' where former MPs get a pension while being employed by the federal government. Mr. McTeague intro- duced a private member's bill in April to reform pen- sions by ending double-dipping, requiring recipients to be 60 years old and increasing the amount of time they must first serve to at least three consecutive terms and a mini- mum of 10 consecutive years. He says his bill "could be redun- dant" once the government legisla- tion is introduced. Currently, an MP with six years' service can collect a pension once they leave the House of Commons, regardless of their age. National Citizens' Coalition (NCC) communications director Gerry Nicholls says, "Mr. McTeague is right on. The pensions plan needs to be reformed. It's a gold-plated pension. "It's especially bad when you consider the government will ask citizens to make sacrifices for ik good of the economy and they're not willing to make sacrifices them- sdves. ' That's a sentiment spared by Mr. McTeague, who says pension reform should be "treated before we deal with a possibly tough budget. Members of Parliament have to be seen to be taking a hit before an austerity budget." Federal finance minister Paul Martin has been warning the coun- try the government's spring budget will include harsh measures in an effort to cut the deficit. Reforming pensions "goes to the question of our credibility to run our affairs," Mr. McTeague says. MPs' pensions have unlimited protection against inflation. The NCC estimates for- mer Progressive Conserva- tive cabinet minister Perrin Beatty, an MP for more than 20 years before losing in the 1993 election, is col- lecting $70,436 a year in pension. Mr. Beatty is now 44 and, if be lives to be 75, he will have collected more than $5 million in pension. "Technically, be's doing as well un -elected as when he was elected," Mr. McTeague notes. Mr. Nicholl says it's "impossible to fund a plan like thus" in the pri- vate sector. "If it's fully indexed, no one knows what the cost will be in 20 years." For every S8 in the plan, MPs contribute $1 and taxpayers $1, Mr. Nicholl reports. The introduction by Mr. Mc'Ibague of a private mem- ber's bill last April set the stage for debate and reform of the fully -indexed pensions for Members of Parliament. The bill calls for an end to 'double-dipping' (where for- mer MPs get a pension will being employed by the fed- eral government), requiring recipients to be 60 years old and increasing the minimum time served to three con- secutive terms before MPs are eligible. That's some- thing far more acceptable to the Canadian public which is footing the bill for the gold-plated pensions MPs cur- rently receive. And the timing of the current debate is impeccable. The federal government has been warning Canadians to prepare themselves for some tough budgetary news next spring; reforming current MP pension policies will send a powerful message to everyday Canadians that the fed- eral government is in touch with the people it represents and that its members are willing to make sacrifices too. Considering that Canadian taxpayers contribute $7 for every $8 in the plan, it's imperative that their wishes be heard — as clearly as politically possible -- and that the federal parliament respond accordingly. "there's a serious question of credibility involved for the federal government in this issue, as Mr. McTeague has so adequately pointed out. Pressure is mounting, and there is a loud chorus of Canadian voices being heard across the country. It's time to reform MP pensions. The television and print media in the Ajax area did a superb job of presenting all can- didates to the people. It is little comfort that our election turnout was statistically higher than most areas...30 per cent (roughly) is not acceptable. But let's not dwell on the past - You have elected your new municipal council for a three- year term. Stan now to familiarize your- self with the issues in your area and watch how your councillors deal with those issues. Also, do not be afraid to talk those things out with those of us who have said that we will defi- nitely be looking for your vote in '97. There were approximately 41,000 eligible voters in Ajax for this election. Some 27,000 of you did not cast a ballot. It will be one challenge that I face over the next three years to attempt to find out why so many do not vote and try to convince you of the great importance of participating in local election. I hope that in the next elec- tion our turnout is over 50 per cent. Remember, local politicians are responsible for most of the services and developments that affect you on an everyday basis. Matt Bell took top spot in the 200 -metre backstroke in the boys' 13 -and -14 division in a time of 2 gold medals minutes 12.18 seconds. Meanwhile, Mike Lockett swam for gold in the boys' 13 -and -14 division 100m back. He finished in 1:02.4. Both swimmers turned in the fastest times recorded for those events this year. My beef is that these photo radar vans are almost never on the major highways, and the traf- • tic is moving as much over the speed limit as ever. I travel quite regularly on Hwy. 401 and photo radar enforcement, to my mind, is lax. She really didn't expect to be moving to Bowmanville, however. Kelly Bouchard was one of the 500 people given a key that would open the front door to a house in the Kaitlin Group's Aspen Springs community in Bowmanville. After 333 people had tried their keys in the lock of the Aspen Forest and some two hours after the first keyholder had tried his key. Mrs. Bouchard swung open the front door of the beautiful 1,634 -square -foot home. The house giveaway was sponsored by the Kaitlin Group and Toronto radio station Q-107 and became known as the House That Jake Built. after radio per- sonality Jake Edwards. A crowd esti- mated between 4.000 and 5.000 people cheered on the 500 finalists on Nov. 6 in Bowmanville. The house, the Aspen Forest, has a finished basement and was completely furnished with brand new appliances. power tools, exercise and recreational equipment, patio furniture and home computer among many other items. The total value of the home was set at close to S250.000. The home giveaway started on Aug. 31, when an elephant from the Bowmanville Zoo travelled 32 kilome- tres to the Canadian National Exhibition with the kev to the front door of the Aspen Forest. In fact, it's not uncommon to see master bedrooms complete with a pri- vate, adjoining bath, sitting room, dressing room and walk -out deck. With home renovation being so pop- ular these days, there seems to be an endless variety or products and ideas available to consumers. With a little creativity or some helpful input from an interior designer and an architect, the possibilities are about as endless as your budget. If you are thinking about revamping your bedroom or building a new one, keep versatility and your lifestyle in mind when planning. GETTING STARTED If your plans are still in the forma- tive stages and you are unsure of where to start, it is a good idea to scout around for ideas by consulting some design or remodelling publications. Depending on your space and budget limitations, you'll be able to sort out your preferences and you should be able to get some indication of the costs associated with such a project. Other than a sleeping space, ask yourself what purposes you would like the room to serve. Do you want it to do double duty as a combined bedroom and sitting room? Do you want to have a portion of the room designated as working space for those work -at-home nights? Perhaps you want to have special space for a television, stereo or simply curling up with a good book. You might also like your own private adjoining bathroom or perhaps an adjoining dressing area that leads to the bath area. You should also determine whether privacy and quiet are ultimate priori- ties. If so, you'll want to incorporate some sound muffling devices — espe- cially if your bedroom is located close to the major activity hub of your home — the kitchen or the family room. Thick carpeting is an effective tool in muffling sound. And windows on busy streets or close to adjoining prop- erties can be covered with fabrics that will help deaden sound and act as effective insulation barriers as well. FURNITURE If new furniture is also included in your plans. it's a good idea to visit sev- eral showrooms long before you get too far in the planning process. This and feel of the types of pieces you'd like to incorporate. A four-poster or sleigh bed, for instance, might look a little larger in real life than what you had initially envisioned. It pays to be realistic. Pick pieces that are comfortable, reflect your tastes and lifestyle and stay within your bud- get limitations. USING EXISTING SPACE If you want to work within the exist- ing space of your present bedroom, you'll obviously be more limited in the scope of your project. However, keep in mind that windows and doors can be replaced or installed in new locations. Walls can also be removed or new ones can be installed. You can also incorporate a number of techniques to make the room look larger than it is. This can be achieved by going to a monochromatic color scheme or installing large mirrors. The installation of new, larger windows can also open up a room a great deal. FOCAL POINT Since a bedroom's primary function is for sleeping, experts suggest that the bed act as the focal point of your bed- room. They also stress the importance of a good -quality mattress. Ideally, there should be enough room in your bedroom for a couple of bedside tables. But, if space is at a pre- mium, there are several innovative ideas — like headboards with built-in, fold -away storage compartments — that you can incorporate to make the most effective use of existing space. For ideas, talk to a decorating consul- tant or check out some remodelling publications. Design experts also suggest that you allow between two and three feet of clear space on either side of the bed so it is easier to access and make up. Adequate access room should also be left for items like wardrobes, dressers and dressing tables. Lighting is also an important con- sideration which is sometimes over- looked in the redecorating process. Most likely you'll want to have ade- quate lighting for reading in bed. You may also require task lighting if you plan to incorporate a work area into your bedroom. With a little foresight and ingenuity, you can transform your bedroom into a cosy, secluded refuge from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
