When the Region sought fund- ing from the Province, that "makes it my business," Mr. Wiseman says. "If they want to build it on their own hook, then it doesn't affect me." He's hoping to "encourage debate over water conservation and how it relates to the water plant. "Do we spend taxpayers' money on building a water plant for $70 million or do we spent tax- payers' money on water conserva- tion, which may, if we do the stud- ies, say we don't need a large water plant?" Mr. Wiseman says. Cutting water use 10 to 15 per cent would allow the building of 9,000 homes in Ajax and Picker- ing without the need for a new plant, he charges. Mr. Wiseman says federal government studies show water consumption can be cut 40 per cent with little or no effect on our lifestyle. The letter states the towns may need to build a plant, but options such as expanding the Whitby supply Plant should be considered. "Decisions like the one about the water plant are made every day without the input of the people in these communities. I want to change that, I believe you should have your say." the letter states. Mr. Witty dismisses the claim, saying, "There's been significant public input into the process. "There's been ample time for e their say. I don't know what he hopes to accomplish with this." Adding on to the Whitby plant "isn't feasible. There isn't enough room. Also, additional pipes would be needed in the ground." During the site selection process, the Whitby option was "immediately discarded because it's not feasible," Mr. Witty adds. Mr. Wiseman's letter states, "This issues should be of concern to you even if you don't receive Town water, as you will be paying for the water plant through your taxes." Mr. Witty counters, "That's wrong. If he's going to meddle, then he should get his facts straight. Water user rates and lot levies will be used to pay for the plant. No property tax money will go into the building or operation of the plant." The plant needs to he "built now," Mr. Witty says, although, with a good water conservation program, expansion of the new plant in the future could be delayed. Mr. Andrews has a distinguished professional record in education in Durham Region that has spanned 26 years. And, as the associate director of business affairs with the local separate school board, he is fully familiar with day -today operations of the board. An Ajax resident, Mr. Andrews is keen to take over for departing director Earl Lagroix, and is aware of the challenges his board will face in the coming months and years. Recommendations from the Royal Commission on Learning loom, while the ongoing financial challenges faced by school boards across the province will require close scrutiny. In the end, however, it is the quality of education that Catholic students in Durham are being offered that is paramount. To that end, Mr. Andrews is, by all accounts, perfectly suited to lead the school system into the 21st century. Mr. Andrews is an educator, he's served in a public capacity as a school board trustee, he has a reputation as a tough negotiator. All of that experience will serve him well in his new position as the director of education. Perhaps more importantly, however, it will serve the thousands of students across Durham Region well too. WRrIE TO THE NEWS ADVERTISER, 130 COhWRC[At. AVE., AJA LIS 2HS OR FAX - X, nx us wT 683 7363 ♦ The 'Praise Report' Webster's defines `furor' differently To the editor - I am writing in response to the front page article in the Nov. 2, 1994 News Advertiser entitled "Furor over Ayer touting Christian candidates" and to the editorial comment on the same subject. I had a shudder at the choice of headline used by the Advertiser as I thought that neither the content of the article nor the so-called Praise Report, which I have obtained a copy of, justified the rather overstat- ed use of words such as "furor" and "tout". Nowhere in the article was it stmod wbo was expressing the furor (fury, indignation, widespread enthusiasm — Webster's) nor who was objecting to the flyer. It was 1131111110117 a summary of the comments Of some of the trustee candidates whose names appeared, some unwnttmgly, on the flyer. Perhaps the furor is more in the mind of the author of this article than anywhere else. I certainly agree with the editori- al view expressed that special inter- est groups should announce them- selves. However, it seems to me that whilst there may have been a certain amount of knowledge and even informal co-operation amongst some of the candidates there is very little evidence in the article to sup- port the implication of a secret block of Christians with a unified and somebow siuisler agenda. It is interesting to note that according to a recent cross -Canada survey more than 80 per cent of Canadians consider themselves Christians. If this is the case then what is the fuss about? Presumably most voters will be delighted to dis- cover that they have at least one candidate in their ward who will be representing values similar to their own tatber than the tired and dam- aging "values -neutral education" which has caused much ire and indignation to many parents who have been words such as "morality, right and wrong" become dirty words in the school system. It would seem to me that many Of these Christian candidates are standing not so much as an orga- nized campaign but tether as a nat- ural outcome of a situation in which parents generally are tired of the tyranny of the politically correct philosophies which cur etidy govern much of the education of dteir dtr7- dret. What most parents want for ¢'-- •..rr r viii irii, their children in school is a good quality education which teaches them the basics for survival and suc- cess in an increasingly competitive global economy. I for one am delighted b bear of a groundswell of public opinion that is producing trustee candidates who are loosely standing together "for the preservation of traditional fami- ly values". Perhaps their political inexpei- ence has caused them to blunder slightly by not being more open about their intentions. However, I will not hold this against them. What I will do is call the listed can- didate in my ward and mate sure I hear for myself what be or she is standing for. Alison Stark also testified that when the family returned to their boat at the Darlington Marina in Bowmanville there was no evi- dence Mr. Stark had been on the boat after dropping his wife off at work. Court heard that following Julie Stanton's disappearance, Ali- son Stark asked her husband BySAL p REPORM PICKERING - Accused murder- er Pieter Stark's left arm and shoul- der were covered in scratches which looked like they had been made by a person's fingernails about two weeks after Pickering teen Julie Stanton disappeared, Whitby court heard Monday. Alison Stark, the estranged wife of the man accused of abducting and killing the teen on Faster Mon- day, April 16,1990, testified she saw the marks after Mr. Stark was admitted to hospital suffering from heart problems near the end of April of that same year. "He had scratches on his left shoulder and back. They were long scratches. There were a total of eight of them that I thought were fingernail scratches." said Mrs. Start who was escorted in and out of the courtroom by a plainclothes police officer and a female Mend. Court heard she asked her hus- band at the time where the scratches had come from. "He said he got them from lying on the side of the road, working on the par." she testified. Asked by defence attorney Leo Adler how she knew that the scratches on her husband's arms and shoulders were not present on Easter Sunday, 1990, she answered: "Because we made love that nigbL- Julie Stanton was last seen get- ting into a grey Monte Carlo fitting the description of Mr. Stark's vehi- cle near her home on Maury Cres- cent. Mr. Stark has admitted pick- ing up the girl. but denies he had anything to do with her disappear- ance. Cam also beam that Mr. Stark told his wife he believed Julie Stan- ton was dead just one week after she disappeared. "Peter believed she was dead. He spoke about Julie in terms of folding the bod,,. He hoped for his own sake that the police didn't find the body." she said. "I said to him: 'You don't even know if she's dead.' His response was: 'If she is dead. I hope they don't ever find her."' Court heard that on the day of the girl's disappearance. Mr. Stark was one hour late picking up his wife, employed by Sanyo Canada in Toronto at the time. Mr. Stark also failed to pick up her daughter Sara, who was staying with her grandparents in Toronto on the Easter weekend, that same after - FAM. His pants were very dirty on his knees and below on the front. They were covered in a black soil. There were also pieces of dead leaves on his pants," she said. Mr. Stark explained his tardiness and the condition of his clothes by saying that he had fallen asleep on the boat and had had car trouble and was forced to work on the vehicle numerous times if he had picked Julie up. Mr. Stark steadfastly denied picking her up, court was told. But during cross-examination, Mrs. Stark admitted that she "wasn't too fond of Julie" and that her husband was well aware of her feelings toward his daughter Kim's friend. Court heard that Mrs. Stark referred to the missing teen as a "a no good rotten kid" during a tele- phone conversation with a friend in January of 1992 that was monitored by police. However, she also denied that the reason her husband lied about picking up Julie Stanton was because he feared she would leave him. It was only after her husband was arrested in February of 1992 that she learned first-hand that he had picked the youth up. she testi- fied. By Jacquie McInnes IAL SPECTO TIM NEWS ADVOMSER DURHAM - Last year in Durham Region the number of break-ins climbed well into the thousands. These numbers don't even include the stolen valuables simply take[; from people's outdoor property - Almost even neighborhood is affected by theft. Often it's just a stolen bicycle or a ransacked car. but its occurrence can still leave its vic- tims shaken. Unfortunately. the combination of an understaffed police force and the high volume of property crime means that crimes like these arc a low priority. One resident's attached garage was just one stop on a busy night for thieves who hit several Durham homes recently. The mother of three was left feeling frightened at the prospect of her husband's upcom- ing bt>.siness trip. "1 was afraid they (the thieves) would get even cockier and try to come right into the house thrdwgh the garage door while I was aster It's hard to say what is worse for property crime victims — the loss of one's valuables or the lost sense of perso nal security. However, if you did wake up to find someone in your home all you would have to do is dial 911 and the dispatcher would automati- cally have your address. It isn't always in the deep, dark of night that crime occurs. You may :urive home from work to discover .i window or door inexplicably open. The police recom- mend that you use l neighbor's phone to call them in case the criminal is still inside. Ideally you will never find your- self in this posi- tion. There are many inexpensive ways to improve your chances of being passed by when a thief is on the prowl. Simply locking your windows and doors is a good start. As Kristina McCann, program vo-ordinator for Neighborhood Watch points out. "Fifty one per cent of break-ins occur through unlocked windows and doors... However, the lock is only as good as the door. It might be said that the only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about. Which would be a crime, considering the topic of discussion is a place that still values the concerns and feelings of its customers. A place that knows excellence speaks louder than words. Wisdom also says that what goes around comes around. That's why people are saying such great things about DURHAM MAZDA. Mazda Canada recently awarded DURHAM MAZDA a 1994 Highest Customer Referral Award. Won by only fifteen dealerships nationally, the award is based on customers' willingness to refer family and friends to the dealership. The award encompasses every detail of the customer experience: the initial greeting, vehicle presentation, price negotiation, vehicle delivery and follow -up - It is excellence in all these categories that has customers praising DURHAM MAZDA's knowledgeable sales staff and professional service. Mazda Canada is proud to honour a dealer- ship like DURHAM MAZDA that treats its customers like friends. The Trojans earned the right to compete at the Metro Bowl playdowns after trouncing the Dunbarton High School Spartans 12-9 in the Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) championship game at Oshawa's Civic Stadium this past Sanmlay. He also centred out pivot Johnson for calling a good game, especially for his ability to put the ball in the air with authority. "He can throw the ball. We got a call upstairs in the booth that Dunbarton was vulnerable to the pass. Believe me, I was happy that we could show pass. You can't win down the road with a one - dimensional offence." For the Spartan.,,. the loss ended a turn -around season for the school's senior football program which posted its best results (5-1 regular - season record) in several years. "I think we played well," says Spartans head coach Peter Kaiser.
