It will cost about S50,000 to install the automatic gates. Annu- al revenue from the lots is expect- ed to bL about S200,000. "I know it's eoing to be a touchy issue," says Mr. Johns. "But 20 od business sense dictates you don't turn your nose up at that possible revenue." Mr. .Johns explains that in determining funding, the provin- cial Ministry of Health assumes each hospital will charge for park- inpark- ingand provides money accord- ingly, regardless of whether the institution does charge for parking. "1 want to run again because of the strong, positive side of politics here in Pickering." says Mr. Pistritto. Citing accomplishments of Town council such as zero tax increases and the preservation of Pickering's rural lands. Keeping youths from becoming dropouts is the premise behind a group of entertainers currently touring Durham schools, and participants deserve to take a bow for their efforts. The curtain call is overdue. The Youth Action Team uses humor, music and video to address the issues of family and date violence, which the group says are as two main reasons teens drop out of school. The statistics the team quotes are sobering: one in 10 teens will experience date violence and one in nine boys will be abused before his 18th birthday. The Youth Action Team's 30 -minute show aims to deliver the message that such violence is not acceptable. It's logical that kids find it easier to talk to other kids about their problems rather than turn to an adult. The Youth Action "ream tries to act as a bridge between trou- hled students and school counselors who can help them. Partially funded by the federal government, the Youth Action ream has visitedeight Durham schools and plans performances at more local schools over the next six weeks. Spokesman Tim McCurry says feedback from princi- pals and guidance counselors has been positive. Dropping out of school is no answer to a child's prob- lems. Programs like the Youth Action Team deserve sup- port from government, school officials, parents, teachers, students and the community at large. There are so many political issues swirling around the topic of education these days, it's sometimes easy to forget the basics. An emotionally disturbed child cannot learn: a child who is not in class cannot learn. Mr. Cobean and Ms. Foden seem to think that a gun in every pot will make this coun- try great. Maybe they should move to the United States and see how great our country is. I, for one would like to see guns banned. The gun lobbyists are stealing the crime reform bill away from the victims' groups, because they only care about one thing: guns. I love being Canadian and don't want to mess in the United States. Ms. Foden doesn't seem to remember that Ontario Ridint_ MP Dan McTeague was very up front about his beliefs on capital punish- ment. I am surprised that she just found out. As for voting for the right person next time, if you just look around at all the issues and not just one, it looks like we did Vote for the right person. People are getting back to work, consumer spending is up, reforms to the waste in the system are being accomplished. I have great hopes for this country, and one is being Canada and not the United States of America. Dave Sawh Ajax Thanks for the cranberries We're giving thanks this weekend for getting through Thanksgiving last weekend relatively unscathed. No pneumonia from the dip in the lake at the cottage of a friend who thought of inviting us to the chalet about the same time she was standing in the checkout line with the turkey, looking at the supermarket tabloid headline 'Butterball's widow recalls gluttonous feast that killed hubby'. No pneumonia but a few new colors added to the rainbow that is fall -- the blue hue of our skin once it hit the water of a northern Ontario lake more than a month after Labor Day, the sickly white pallor it took on when frostbite set in, the red of the ambulance light as the paramedics arrived on the scene. We're giving thanks to our hostess and her family for not laughing when we expressed surprise upon learning the Thanksgiving bird isn't born with croutons in its cranium, that the fowl isn't full of stuffing when the farmer picks it off his trees. We're grateful that, in our first attempt at dressing the gobbler, we were only asked to handle the end where the neck used to be. We're giving thanks to Mom for having taken care of the Thanksgiving feast sob for the first 41 year; of our childhood, just slightly longer than she had us believing in the tooth fairy. We're grateful the bear that wandered too far from the district dump and way too close to our weekend retreat didn't turn us into its treat, that the beast was happy to feast on people's junk rather than people who eat junk. We're giving thanks to the driver of the canoe who advised us before we set out for a chilly, wind -hindered trek across the bay between Snakepit Rock and tlaz- ardous Waste Point that, no, the vessel didn't come equipped with a head. We're grateful the hostess and her family didn't ask us to help them close the cottage for the season. Per- haps they knew that, if they'd handed power tools to this not -so -handy -man, the chalet could have been shut for good. We're giving thanks to them for their hospitality, to the bear for not baring its fangs, to Jack Daniels for nipping at our liver to kill the post -swim shivers, to Jack Frost for not nipping off any other vital organs. Which reminds us: what can one do with the turkey neck, anyway? Unit 2 produces 540 megawatts of power, which is enough to meet the peak demands of a city the size of London, Ont. PICKERING — The unit 2 reactor at the Pickering Nuclear Generation Station was scheduled to be taken out of service this week- end for maintenance. While the unit is down, work crews will repair minor steam leaks in the ste un genera- tion system, which is in the conventional or non-nuclear side of the plant. This repair plan allows the unit to be fixed with less disruption to the Hydro system, and prevents a possible forced outage that might occur if the leaks became larger. S. to allow construction of nine homes. George Wimpey Canada want- ed to build nine sin k=le-detached homes with 28 -foot frontages on a vacant triangular tract on Westney where the road curves to the east. The land is zoned `O' for Pub- lic Use, which permits such things as a government building, school, church, cemetery, day-care centre, hospital or arena. Wimpey wanted it designated to allow residential. Sint, le -detached homes border the site, while vacant industrial land is on the opposite side of Westney. Wimpey spokesman Bob Jarvis told Ajax council's committee of the whole Tuesday, "You have to come to some realization the land won't sit there. You have to come to grips that' This is a piece of land that has to be developed. This pro- posal is the least intrusive." However, the Town's planning h'y:S W A department reported, "The appli- cant has not provided a convincing argument why the proposed devel- opment is appropriate." The department is concerned the homes would be isolated from the sturounding neighborhood and the dead-end street the houses would be built on would have direct access to Westney. The houses and a park would be situated on a corner of Westney where southbound cars over the years have left the road and crashed into the backyards of homes. A few years ago, a traffic'' barrier was installed to stop the: vehicles. Ward 4 councillor Jim McMas- ter told Mr. Jarvis. "Many people! live on busy streets. but they don't live on dangerous corners. We've had three cars go into backyards and that's with your land as a buffer." The committee voted 8-0 to reject Wimpey's plan. What better way to combine the two than with an educational software program that will enter- tain and teach at the same time? If you haven't purchased any children's software over the last few years, you may be over- whelmed by the selection and the varying hardware requirements. For example, RAM (memory) requirements can vary from a minimal 640K right up to 4MG. As a rule you will require at least a 286 hard drive with some pro- grams requiring a 386 or better. And while there are lots of great programs available on disk, for the latest software you may want to consider adding CD ROM to your system. Because of the interactive nature of today's programs which provide verbal instructions and sound effects vital to their opera- tion, you will need a sound card and speakers. If you don't have these, you will have to invest in them before running your soft- ware. The lower-priced sound cards which start at around $90 are adequate for this use. Speak- ers start as low as $10. You will also require a mouse for almost any educational pro- gram. Let the family test a few models before purchasing one; they come in different shapes and sizes and it will be a personal decision as to which one best suits your family. Finally, you will need to ensure you have the supporting software in place for the program of your choice. Many programs will run off your choice of DOS or Windows but some require fairly up-to-date versions of these systems. If you're running an older version. make sure it will support the soft- ware you choose by checking the specifications given on the hox. With the required hardware in place, you can choose from an ever-expanding market of educa- tional programs. Take the time to visit a few stores because the selection available can vary. There are some things to keep in mind to ensure you choose the right software for your children's needs. First, look for a,_e appropriat�:- ness. Most software boxes give you an age range. If it is a wide range ensure the program has variables built into it to accommodate the vast differ- ences in knowledge and capabili- ties of the three-year-old and his eight-year-old sister. Take into account each child's unique abili- ties as well. If you have a very bright seven-year-old, he may be beyond a program geared for this age group. Another consideration is longevity. The average price of a good progrim is around $50, s< ideally it should be of use to your children long enough to justify the investment. Don't forget entertainment value. Hospice Durham joinsCaring Hands across theprovince DURHAM - Hospice Durham joins hands with over 60 hospices across Ontario during the week of Oct. 17 to 23 in the first annual province -wide campaign to raise awareness about palliative care. The theme of the week is Hos- pice: Caring Hands Across Ontario. It was initiated by the Community Hospice Association of Ontario. Hospice Durham is a non-profit community-based volunteer pro- gram providing in-home support to individuals and families facing a life-threatening illness. Services are offered free -of -charge through in - memoriam donations, private gifts and fund-raising activities. Incorpo- rated in 1991, the hospice has been serving clients since early 1992. "Our goal is to help patients live life as fully as possible," said Bar- bara Hiemstra, executive director of Hospice Durham. Ms. Hiemstra is one of four paid employees who work at the hospice on a part-time basis. The actual patient care is done by volunteers who undergo an eight- week training program. Duties per- formed by the volunteers takes many forms, said Ms. Hiemstra, including companionship, running errands, taking the patient out for a drive and a cup of coffee, child care, and more. Currently, the hospice is assisting a family in which the patient is a child and the volunteer gives the child's mother a chance to take the siblings out occasionally. Special Hospice Durham flags will fly at the municipal offices of Ajax, and Pickering. The mayors of those municipalities have pro- claimed the week Hospice Aware- ness Week. At 2:40 a.m., police were dis- patched to 1-ick's Restaurant at 1163 Kingston Rd. to respond to an alarm. Officers found the rear door on the south side of the business ajar and two crowbars inside that were used in the break-in. Once inside. the bur«lars smashed an office door window to gain access to the company's safe, opened it and stole cash, gift certificates and coupons. But the blond bombshell you'll see strutting her stuff on stage at the Ajax -Pickering United Way's benefit dance Oct. 21 is actually Cory Diamond. The 29 -year-old Ajax resident is just one of the performers who make up Living Legends — a troupe which impersonates today's most famous recording artists. "The troupe is actually quite exciting," says Diamond. "It's been around for five years, and currently includes impersonations of Michael and Janet Jackson, Tina Turner, Marilyn Monroe. Boy George, Rod Stewart, Frank Sinatra, Ringo Starr and more" Diamond herself became involved with Living Legends about four years ago. She was doing impersonations of Marilyn Monroe in Jumbo Video Stores when Paul Scarponi — or Rod Stewart — walked in. "Paul really gave me my break. Ile believed in me, in my ability. He brought me into the troupe and gave me the chance to really experiment." That experimentation included the switch from Marilyn to Madonna. Having lost some weight. Dia- mond felt the need to try some- thing different. Madonna seemed a logical choice, and she got down to the nifty gritty task of listening to music, watching videotaped concerts and reading every piece of literature the Material Girl had penned. The hard work paid off and, today, Diamond is quite comfort- able with her character. "Thanks to Paul and the other members of the troupe, I now have the confidence to really work with the character," she says. "I've chosen to focus on Madonna in her Blond Ambition stage because I think that was a history -breaking image for her and for other women in music. It was also her best con- cert." Speaking of her own show, Diamond points out there are two versions, depending on the audi- ence. "It's funny. but I sometimes think that we have a lot in com- mon. I think I'm more charitable than her, but we are similar in other ways. Pickering will now meet Malvern in the OYSL championship final, the time and location of which aren't known yet. Despite playing short-handed for much of the contest. Pickering defeated the Oakville Red Devils 4-3. Christopher Stewart put Power in front scoring_ on a free kick from just outside the 18 -yard box.
