At around 1:30 a.m., a 1987 Chevrolet pickup truck slammed into the front of their house, cracking bricks and the foundation, buckling a wall and window frame, and damaging their front yard. "it sounded like a demolition ball had hit the house," says Mar- lene Boetto. "We heard this awful bang and the house shook. We jumped out of bed and my husband ran outside and saw the truck." A 2222 -year-old Scarborough man driving the truck was getting out of the vehicle when lee Boetto got outdoors. The truck was travelling northbound on Lake Driveway W. when it jumped a curb, took out a tree on the property opposite the Bo ettos, crossed Vale and crashed into the house. "His foot never hit his brakes," Mrs. Boetto says. "The house stopped him. The whole house shook. "Our neighbors heard tires screeching and then they heard a big bang. They were here before we got outside. It amazes me all the things he didn't hit, like the lamp post and stop sign," she says. The driver "said he didn't know how he got here. Apparently he was at a party and dropped a friend off. I don't know how the heck he got to Ajax." The motorist was charged with impaired driving and he'll appear in court Nov. 9. He suffered a gash to his forehead when he hit the windshield. That was the message served up by mayor Wayne Arthurs to the local business community at the Town's first-ever economic development breakfast Wednesday morning at The Old liver - pool House. The breakfast replaces the Town's annual eco- nomic development banquet held in October of every year. However, this new method of reacting out to the business community is expected to con- tinue year-round, with several economic develop- ment breakfasts for various sectors such as real estate or manufacturing. A schedule for the breakfast% has yet to be determined. About 65 local entrepreneurs who turned up for Wednesday's event were treated to a detailed presentation from the mayor on why Pickering is such a good place to do business. He pointed out Pickering's tax rate is among the lowest in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), and that the Town has worked hard at keeping it at that level. Mr. Arthurs noted Town council would have lowered the tax rate by one-half a per- centage point over the last three years if it didn't have to impose a special 1.51per cent levy on tax- payers to hire firefighters for the new fire hall at Dixie Rd. and Finch Ave. So taxes actually increased one per cent over the same period. "For all practical purposes we are debt -free," he said, explaining the Town's debentures are "insignificant" in > comparison to its total budget. He noted $30 million has been spent on capital projects over the past five years without incurring debt. The mayor also pointed out only 44 per cent of the Town's operating budget comes from direct taxation, with the rest emanat- ing from sources such as user fees and grants in lieu of taxation, like those received from the Pick- ering Nuclear Generating Station. In the meantime, police are urg- ing other firearms dealers in the region to beef up security in light of the Monday munfer and the slaying three weeks ago of the co-owner of an Oshawa sporting goods store where guru are sold. A post-mortem examination of Mr. Chow has determined he died of multiple gunshot wounds but police aren't saying how many times he was shot or the location of the fatal wound. Since there was no sign of forced entry to the building and the security system can only be activated from the inside, the victim may have known his assailant. However, Staff Sgt. Bob Peacock notes it's not unusual for members of the public to be allowed in to the club. "You just can't walk in (unas- sisted). But anyone can come and go. It's a business" Police are also trying to deter- mine how many, if any, members of the Durham Sport -Shooters Club, which used the range regularly, were inside between 12 p.m. when the facility opened and 3 p.m. when the body was discovered, Staff Sgt. Pea- cock sa)s. "At the moment anything is a possibility. Everyone's a suspect." Sgt. Peacock says police aren't sure whether the murderer acted alone or had an accomplice. Mr. Chow, a university graduate with a degree in civil engineering, was filling in at the last-minute For an ailing co-owner. The range, in an industrial area just south of Bayly St. and west of Monarch Ave., is owned by George and Kiki Kcwmbis of Toronto. The small grey building houses frying ranges as well as a small gun shop which sells firearms and ammunition to club members. According to club member Bob Swift, around 20 handguns and 20 rifles and shotguns were kept in a display case in the gun shop during the day. The weapons were locked `Town can compete with any market' FROM PAGE 1 review and the improved access it is supposed to create to Town services. "What we're trying, to do is tum the pyramid upside down," he said, explaining the Town is working to make the "customer" the most important part of the operational structure. The message was much the same from Town manager Tun Sheffield, who oudi ned how Pickering is one of the most affordable locations in the GTA in terms of land prices, operating costs and labor force availability. "We're capable of competing with any market in Ontario in attracting business," said Mr. Sheffield. `He could have killed himself' formed officers," according to Insp. John Hamilton, who heads up 24 Division here. Insp. Hamilton says, "There are 40 officers assigned to solving the two cases" — Monday's Ajax murder and the Sept. 14 slaying of the co- owner of Oshawa's Gagnon Sporting Goods, who was killed when two masked gun- men burst into the store, opened fire and made away with several weapons. Sgt. Ryrie says Durham police are not ruling out the possibility the two crimes may tie connected. A^ 12U KrVwn Rd, PieMa1% 4y*n Residents angry drivers use streets as shortcuts to avoid busy corner By MARIANNE TAKACS STAFF RI310RTER PICKERING — Traffic -weary residents who want a street in their neighborhood closed off to rid it of short -cutting motorists came away from a Pickering council meeting Monday night with only the promise their problems would be studied. The residents of Dadewooxl Dr. and Brookridge Gate appeared before council to ask the "Town to close Brookridge where it intersects with Altona Rd. They maintained they were told when they bought their homes that there would be a cul-de-sac where Brookridge meet,, Dalewood, and that they've been suffering an endless traffic night- mare since Daalewcxxl was extended from Brookridge to Rougemount Dr. in late 1983, creating a connec- tion to I Iwy. 2. "Fran that point on, our neigh- borhood changed forever," Dale- w(,xl resident Dale Goldhawk told councillors. "We are Lar tm) conve- nient a sho mut for cars aux] sacks." Motorists apparently use Dale - wood and Broxakridge to avoid the busy intersection at Allo ni Rd. and Ilwy. 2. Light% are scheduled to go f I III at the intersection by the end of this year, but the residents maintain that won't be enough to discourage the short -cutters, who speed and ignore the stop sign at the corner of Dalewood and Brookridge. Mr. Goldhawk said a hydro box on Dalewood has been "demol- ished" three times over the past two years by drivers who have gone off the road; that one house had a car plow through its front yard and almost through its front window; and that the owners of another home had to replace the tree in their front yard two times after it was hit by motorists. Wendy Smith -Heard, who lives opposite the corner of Dalewood and Brookridge, says she lives "in fear' for the safety of her children. "I in good conscience cannot let my children roars," she said. She also noted she is a "prisoner of air conditioning" in the summer because the traffic makes it too noisy to open the win(k)ws at night. "Do one of our children have to die for council to understand how serious our situation is?" asked Nina Unice',, of Bnx)kridge. But Christine Lenix, who lives on the corner of Altona and Brookridge, spoke against the pro - Posed closure and maintained the Town would be building "little fortresses' in Pickering if it allowed so many streets to end in cul -de - Sacs. "I'm not kept awake at night by screaming traffic," she said, adding motorists usually go through the neighborhood slowly. Laura Sutton, a member of the Rouge Valley Community Associa- tion, told councillors the Town should study the area traffic situa- tion before closing off any streets, because closing off Brookridge could create problems for about 500 families who live on the other side of Altona. "Che reason they cut through the neighborhood, she added, is because the Altona and Ilwy. 2 intersection is a "suicide corner". Marc Charette of Rougemount Dr. presented council a petition signed by 52 residents of his street opposed to the proposed closure. "Closing one area and moving traffic on to Rougemount is not a solution;" he said. Council voted to have the Town hire a traffic consultant to study the area. I also share Mr. Cobean's opinion that stiffer gun control is not the answer to vio- lent crimes, that stiffer sentences for criminals and capital punish- ment will keep these violent criminals off our streets and therefore our communities will be much safer. Too many innocent people are being killed and too many violent criminals are getting off too easy. I will never forget how I felt when I heard that Metro Toronto police constable Todd Bavlis was murdered. I assure you that there were thousands of people who felt the same way as I did on that sad day. 1 can remember where I was when I heard about that brave youns man's fate. I had many feelings about this sense- less tragedy, but as devastated as 1 felt I knew that nothing could compare to what his family, friends and colleagues must have felt. I have not forgotten Todd Bavlis and I know that I never will. But memories don't save lives. what will is stiffer laws and the elimination of these violent criminals from our societies. I called both my MP and h1PP to talk with them about mv con- cerns and my wish for capital punishment to be brought back. I spoke with Dan McTeaeue about these concerns and he informed me that he didn't believe in capi- tal punishment. Yes, Mr. Cobean I demanded that he follow our wants and our concerns but he said that he wouldn't. So where does this leave us° I guess as a part of that lottery you spoke of and I assure you that I don't want to take the chance of somethine happening to my family or myself either. Maybe, just maybe: there is someone out there who will sup- port our wants and our concerns next election, we just have to make sure that we vote for the right person next time. Access to all those library systems means Rouge Hill users can get inter -library loans from them. The central branch of the library is already on INFO. An added benefit of the grant, notes Pickering Public Library chief executive officer Sandy Cameron, is that it will enable the library to purchase for Rouge Hill the CD ROM hardware needed to get on INFO — hard- ware which can he; used for other purposes as well. His music was well received by the audience. ❑ Performance in Krakow, Poland before 10,000 people `was like magic' By SAL BOMMARITO STAFF REPORTER FlUKERING - While other school teachers were enjoying the summer off, St. Mary Catholic Secondary School teacher Eric Genuis was helping to raise money for AIDS patients in Poland. Mr. Genuis, a pianist and vocalist, was the only non -Polish performer invited to a music fes- tival in the city of Krakow, orga- nized to raise money for AIDS patient care in the former com- munist country. The festival, which took place July 10-14, attracted around 10,000 people. The Port Perry resident was playing a concert for the Polish community in Toronto earlier this year when the co-ordinator of the music festival in Poland heard his recently -produced CD, Last in Line, and invited him to perform there. "It was not only thrilling, but I was a stranger there, performing in front of 10,000 people and the Concert features Harvest of local independents AJAX-PICKERING — Fans of this area's alternative music scene can hear several of the best local 'indie' hands while supporting a worthwhile cause at an upcoming show in Oshawa. It was like magic," says the 27 - year -old math teacher, who describes his music as a collec- tion of life experiences. The performance was particu- larly satisfying, however, because it benefited a good cause, he says. "Whenever anyone comes together to do a charity concert, it's a special feeling. Everyone knew what the cause was. Ten thousand people were hopeful for their brothers and sisters to come through the disease," he says. The experience opened Mr. Genuis's eyes to what AIDS patients living in the former communist country are facing. "I'm not sure they have the means there to care for AIDS patients. There's not the accep- tance there that we have here. They're still in the ostracizing stage." Mr. Genuis says he wanted to see the situation AIDS patients are facing first hand, but circum- stances made it impossible for visits to take place. "I didn't see anything first hand. I asked, but because of where the concert was held and the timing of it, it was impossi- ble. I wanted to perform for some patients." 4" - Fish & Chips SENIORS'DAY Every Monday Halibut &Chips FAMILY PACK 99 4 Fish & 3 Chips Large Cole Slaw PARTY PACK 2595 6 Fish & 4 Chips LUNCH SPECIAL Chicken Fingers or99 Shrimp with Chips or 4 Fish & Chips with Pop 750 Oklahoma Dr. • PICKERING FAMILY 831-1222 ! IF-ust-time homebuyers, Harry and Sam van Staveren love their new home at Courtice Crossing - so much that they're continually encouraging their friends who still live in rental units to pay that $300 or $400 extra per month and own a home too! Sara points out, "the public school is only 3 minutes down the street and, unlike Whitby and Oshawa, the Cour- tice school is one of the few which offer residents a pre -kindergarten program. Harry and Sara looked for homes in Whitby Oshawa (which they found too expensive), and Bowmanville (which they found too far for Harry's Toronto commute). Courtice Crossing is only minutes away from the 401 via Courtier Road. Although they were not familiar with the Jeffery reputation, they soon became impressed with what they saw. Courtice Crossing was the only site offer- ing fully bricked homes in day brick included in the a standard price and there were so many upgrade features included (such as the appliance package) which came in hardy when they moved from a ren- tal unit. Not being experienced homebuyers, they found Saks represen- tative Julie to be of great help with all their ques- tons, suggestions and visits after hours to help them retake this important decision - especially the infor- mation about their home being on a street which eventually will be closed off to through traffic. Once they got through the stages of the process, Harry was a familiar sight videotaping the ongo- h r } n y♦ - lK f4Y 0 ing construction of their home. Many tradespeo- ple are immortalized on tape answering questions and giving advice. He found them very personable and helpful when he asked questions, even "dumb" ones! Both spouses had heard horror stories about new home builders and some of the products they produced but were pleasantly surprised at the ef- fort put forth by all members of the Jeffery team - from sales representatives, to the informative tradespeople, to Wayne and Scott Jeffery, the father and son team who make up Jeffery Homes. Harry never felt that he was talked down to at any time and Scott was always there to answer numerous questions, which only could come from a first- time homebuyer. "Most people are surprised when they learn we own a Jeffery Hone" Sara says, "especially one with an upper level sunken family room, a beautiful gas fireplace, 1 112 car garage, three bathrooms and a cathedral ceiling in the family room". The fami- ly room also boasts a lovely half -round window treatment which gives focus to the room. Both are also looking forward to making friends with the many young families on their street and heartily recommend that young couples like themselves come and see how easy it is to own a Jeffery Home as well. "We've done well for being so young" Harry says. Yes you have, Harry, yes you have. Prices and specifications subject to ckwp witbotu notice. EA O.t. Priv mW mforwtion comet M prem me. City Homes was formed in 1986 and is comprised of four partners — Peter Abramczuk, Robert Hann and brothers Jamie and Roger Maclnnis. The Hann family has been part of the construction industry in Ontario since the 1920s. Bob Hann and Abramczuk, who has been involved in the construction industry since 1961, began working together in 1966. In the early 1980s, Hann and Abramczuk became affiliated with the Maclnnis brothers, who are carpenters by trade. This long working relationship between the four partners is one of the company strengths, says Abramczuk. Jamie and Roger maintain a full-time presence at the construction site, which means minor details and adjustments are attended to as quickly as possible. "When constructing a house, any decisions we make are based on what we would do if we were building it (the house) for ourselves," says Roger. With sites like Chelsea Gardens and Lincoln Green, City Homes has gained a reputation for design detail and con- scientious construction. The company has maintained an Excellent rating with the Ontario New Home Warranty Program. The site is fully serviced and regis- tered. Closing dates are available for early spring of 1995. Two furnished and decorated show homes are available for viewing. Phase I of the construction commences in October. Sundance West is located off Thornton Rd., just south of Taunton Rd. in Oshawa. Perhaps the main reason to live here, and not there, is "here" has a river and a forest that will be a forest forever. The other main reason is the house that will be your house and nobody else's. Built to your taste, your needs, your whims, and never owned by anyone else but you. Then there's the land. It's right on the edge of the Rouge Valley Wilderness Park and when the.last lot is sold, just because they're scarce, their values will all go up. As you house -hunt this weekend include a stop at Marshall Homes in your plans and we'll give you a list of all the sites in the area. That way you can easily compare them with the ten remaining lots in TallTrees and The Grove. Having compared, we think you'll find that "here" is where you'd really rather be.
