PICKERING — Pickering
councillors will have to take a stand
next week on whether the Picker-
ing Nuclear Generating Station
should undergo a public environ-
mental review before having its
operating licence
renewed.
The review
has been demand- -
ed by Durham •
Nuclear Aware- _
ness (DNA), a
local citizens'
group which lobbies
for nuclear safety. DNA hopes to
persuade the Atomic Energy Con-
trol Board (AECB) of Canada to
ask the federal Minister of the
Environment to order an environ-
mental hearing on the plant before
renewing its two-year licence,
which expires Dec. 31.
The citizens' group is going to
municipal councils across Durham
Region and Metro Toronto asking
politicians to support its call for a
review. On Monday night, DNA
representative Dave Martin brought
the issue to Pickering council.
"No other nuclear station in the
world is surrounded by more peo-
ple than Pickering's," he told coun-
cillors, toting that approximately
13 million people live within a 30-
kdometre radius of the facility.
Mr. Martin listed the factors
which he said support DNA's call
for a review. They include a recent
provincial report recommending
stricter standards for radioactive tri-
tium in drirtking water, the lack of a
second fast shut -down system at
the Pickering A station, delays in
implementing improvements to
nuclear emergency plans for this

Monitoring fault shuts
nuclearp lant reactor
PICKERING — A problem with a monitoring system at the Picker-
ing Nuclear Generating Station shut down a reactor Tuesday morning.
The monitoring system on two of the Unit 5 reactor's 12 boilers
detected a problem with the boilers even though none existed. The sys-
tem automatically takes the reactor to low power if it detects something
wrong with the boilers.
As of Thursday morning the reactor was still down. But Ontario
Hydro spokesman Ted Greutzner said it was expected to be up and run-
ning by Thursday afternoon.
Mr. Greutzner reported the shutdown was the result of a faulty capaci-
tor in the monitoring system.
Unit 5 produces 540 megawatts of power, but the outage did not
affect the hydro system.

Town manager Tim Sheffield
explained in an interview that even
with the limitations suggested, the
facility will be able to serve the
needs of the community in Clare-
mont. Ile noted other community
centres in Pickering don't have han-
quet facilities for more than 200,
that their banquet facilities are gen-
erally used only once a week or
less, and that not even the Pickering
Recreation Complex has cooking
facilities for a banquet.
Mr. Sheffield said the co-op
nursery school, which is to be
moved to the proposed Claremont
facility, only has 20 children now
and it's not anticipated its needs
will grow significantly.
He also pointed out the change
rooms at the centre will not have
showers.
"It will only he for basic human
needs," he said, adding another
existing facility in the park could be
used for ball tournaments.
The S2.6 -million community
centre/library/fire hall is to be built
with Ottawa, Queen's Park and
Pickering splitting the cost.
Pickering officials have main-
tained much of the cost of the land
purchased for it will be recovered
when the Town either sells or uses
the property presently occupied by
the fire hall, library, community
centre and seniors' centre the new
Claremont facility will replace.

Give it a chance
Judging by the number of calls the News Advertiser
received in our interactive Infosource telephone line, the
majority of readers in our communities passionately
oppose all -day, every -other -day kindergarten.
And that's a message, perhaps, that should not be lost
on educators and school board trustees. That's what the
Infosource phone line is in place for -- to give readers
another forum through which they can share their views
with us and, by extension, others in their community.
But if you are one of the many who is opposed to this
alternative form of kindergarten, it is important to remem-
ber that it is a program that is being put in place with the
best of intentions.
Before the issue was decided, the school board hosted a
series of public meetings, giving residents ample opportu-
nity to speak. So too did they accept reams of correspon-
dence and phone calls on both sides of the issue.
But the decision was reached in a democratic fashion.
As such, we all must give the new program an opportunity
to prove -- or disprove -- itself.
Yes, the Infosource phone line responses we gathered
were weighted against the program. But there were enough
responses from our readers in favor of it; enough so that
we believe there are others out there who believe it
deserves a chance.
If indeed it proves to be unsatisfactory, or if it isn't ade-
quately preparing our children for their educations in the
future, then it must be withdrawn.
Your responses to our informal poll were articulate and
well-prepared and we appreciate them. But let us set aside
our predictions of failure and give the program the benefit
of the doubt before passing sentence.
Time will tell the success of the new kinderoanen.

It was with great dismay that I
read Blake Purdy's Sept. 25 col-
umn about running for office in a
municipal election.
Even though I'm sure his com-
ments were given "tongue in
check" to a certain extent. I resent
that he would generalize about all
political newcomers assuming
there are always ulterior motives
that are not in the best interests of
the electorate, and that they
would stoop to anything to get
elected.
It is as unfair as suggesting all
newspapers are of the same ilk as
the gossipy supermarket tabloids.
I can only speak for myself but
I can assure you my entry into the
political arena is purely altruistic.

incumbents and newcomers alike,
who share my philosophy.
It is articles and attitudes such
as Mr. Purdy's that discourage
many professional individuals
from getting involved or offering
their expertise and commitment
to further the future of their com-

That's the day when 52 MPs

qualify for gold-plated pensions
worth about $53 million. It's true.
After six years in office, MPs qual-
ify for a pension that has unlimited
protection against inflation, regard-
less of their age.
What they call a pension is real-
ly a cash -for -lite lonery that none
of us in the private sector could
ever hope to afford. Prime Minister

ing. The 34 -seat bike was in Durham in June
and riders collected $52,000.
During the four-month country -wide tour,
which ended Aug. 27, about 13,000 people in
114 communities rode the bike. The event also
exceeded its original goal of $1.25 million. All
money raised remains in the community where
it was donated and will go to the Easter Seal
Society to help physically -disabled children.

live on Hillcrest Rd. think they've
waited Tong enough for the Town to
fix their crumbling street.
" 1 saw kids throwing chunks of
pavement down the road for some-
thing to do the other day;' reports
Hillcrest Rd. resident Derek Pugh.
Nir. Pugh says the resident,, are
tired of the bumps, potholes, cracks
and the big drop from the curb to the
road surface. Almost everybody has
cold patch at the end of their drive-
ways to fill the gap to the road, he
satin, and visitors often end up hitting
the passenger side dais of their cars
against the curb when they part: on
the StreeL
According to Mr. Pugh, most of
the homes in the area were built
from 1965 to 1967 and there's been
no major repair of the road since
then. Under the Town's current five-
year forecast for road work. Hilkcre.�ct
is scheduled for reconstruction in
1997.

PICKERING — Town council's executive com-
mittee Monday approved a rezoning for an indoor
sports/amusement park despite protests from
one councillor who maintains it's too close to
schools.
The zoning amendment was requested for the
National Sports operation on the south side of
Kingston Rd. just west of Whites Rd., to accom-
modate the "sports practice facility" the retailer
already has running on the site.
The facility includes a roller blade rink, bat-
(ing cages, courts for one-on-one basketball, Maurice
"fun karts", skate rentals, video sports games, Brenner
preschooler play areas, meeting rooms and
change rooms.
Ward I councillor Maurice Brenner spoke against
Dunbarton High School is only a stone s throw
away," he said, worried teens may go to play the
video games at lunch and not return to school.
"We are sending out the wrong message to the stu-
dents."
But other council members noted the facility is far
enough away from any residential neighborhood, that
it offers family-oriented activities, and that
there haven't been public complaints about it.
According to Town planning staff, area
schools have not objected to the rezoning.
"There's a lot less healthy things that kids
could do," said Ward 2 councillor Kip Van
Kempen.
Councillors did vote to delete a provision
from the zoning bylaw that would have
allowed a "place of amusement" to be estab-
lished in the multiple -tenant building where
the sports store is located.
The rezoning remains to be approved by Pickering
council next week.

I'm willing to give it a try. People balked at the
idea of when it was first mtroduoed
many years ago because they said five-year-olds
'weretoo young and they balked at the idea of
junior kindergarten. I'd like to remind people
that they are not obliged to send their kids to
kindergarten — if they don't think they are ready for it,
they can keep them home until Grade 1. I think any
program that saves money while not compromising the
quality of education is worth a try.
My daughter started all -day, every -other -day kinder-
garten on Sept. 20. She's been tired and has fallen
asleep twice after Corning home from school.
We will be cheating back for a progress report in a
month or so -- we will run the question again to get
your opinions.

PICKERING — While other
young adults will be studying for
their exams next spring, 22 -year-
old Nerissa Bogdanis of Picker-
ing will be in Costa Rica studying
life.
She'll spend two -and -a -half
months there on behalf of Youth
Challenge International, a Cana-
dian -based organization that
sends young people to developing
countries. They're 18 to 25 years
old and do community work such
as build bridges and schoolhous-
es, conduct environmental
research and provide medical
assistance.
"I think this is an excellent
opportunity for youths to gain
some sort of hands-on experi-
ence," says Ms. Bogdanis,
"because we're always in school
and doing textbook and academic
work."
She's taking a semester off
university to make the trip, and is
scheduled to leave April 3. After
she returns, she must do 100
hours of community work here as
part of the program.

Nerissa Bogdanis is busy
preparing for a volunteer mis-
sion in Costa Rica next spring.
She's currently trying to raise
money to pay for the $4,000
excursion.
Ms. Bogdanis is currently
completing her fourth year at the
University of Toronto, majoring
in psychology and specializing in
sociology. She hopes for a future
career in the social services field
and believes this volunteer work
will provide her useful experi-
ence.
"I've always been interested in
doing this type of work — relief
work, mission work, something to
do with international develop-
ment," she notes.
Ms. Bogdanis will be part of a
group of eight to 10 "challengers"
from countries such as Australia,
Guyana, Costa Rica and Canada.
Applicants were chosen at a
"selection weekend" last spring
that involved 48 hours of testing
of decision-making skills, team-
work ability and personality. Ms.
Bogdanis is the only young per-
son going from the Ajax -Picker-
ing area.
"Working with people my age
from different areas of the world
will be an exciting experience in
itself," she believes.
Youth Challenge International
was formed in 1989 by former
Canadian members of similar
British-based organizations for
youth volunteer work in develop-
ing countries. The Canadian orga-
nization gets 25 per cent of its
funding from the Canadian Inter-
national Development Agency
and 15 per cent from private com-
panies, while 60 per cent is raised
by the young volunteers.
Ms. Bogdanis is responsible
for raising 53,750 to fund her trip
and the projects she will be work-
ing on in Costa Rica, by Feb. 3.
She has already held some garage
sales, she'll raffle off a donated
painting, and she's looking for
sponsors. (Donations over SIO
are tax deductible.)
As well, she's organizing a
keg party on Saturday, Oct. 1,
from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Sunny-
side Park Hall in Oshawa (at
Stacey Ave. and McKim St. off
Ritson Rd. S.). Everyone is wel-
come. Tickets are S6 in advance
and $7 at the door. Food will be
available.

AJAX-PICKERING — An Ajax
gymnast will be among a star-
studded line-up of works champions
competing at a meet at Copps
Coliseum in Hamilton Saturday.
Lisa Simes, 17, who attends
Dumbarton High School in the High -
Performance Athlete Program, will
compete at the SoapBerry Shop
World Gymnastic Challenge, which
features world-class male and
female gymnasts from the U.S.,
Belarus, Ukraine, Romania and
Russia.
Simes is one of two female
athletes who'll represent Canada at
the meet. The third -year national
women's gymnastics team member
will be joined by Jaime Hill of
Mississauga
Among the international stars
expected to take part in the event are
U.S. Olympians Shannon Miller and
Dominique Dawes, 1993 SoapBerry

PICKERING — The Pickering Rebound Sports minor novice 'AA' hockey
team played the Orillia Terriers to an exciting 6-6 draw in the season opener in
Orillia.
Andrew Dissanayake led the way with two goals, while Blake Araujo,
Kevin Marshall. Brad Hughes and Chris Wilkinson netted singles. Drawing
assists were Chuck Britskey, Kevin Dudgeon, Trevor Fray, Michael Minnings,
Ryan Sabourin. Robert Selig, Winston Tang and Adam Van Dyk.
Goalie Daniel Stewart was solid between the pipes for Pickering.
The team is coached by Pad Selig, Ian Hughes, Richard Sabourin and Vic
Araujo.

championships I didn't compete as
well as I would have liked. I was
happy just to make the (Canadian
Commonwealth Games) team, but to
have the results that I did was even
better."
After this gymnastics season
ends, Simes is unsure which path
she'll take next year. In her OAC
year at Dunbarton High School, she
may opt to go to the U.S. on a
scholarship. Or she may continue to
train with the Canadian women's
gymnastics team until after the
Olympics in Atlanta in 1996.
"I'll be writing my SATs soon,
but I'm still undecided whether to go
(to school in the U.S.) next year or
the year after. I'm thinking about the
Olympics in the back of my head,
but I'm just trying to take it as it

distinguish them from live plants.
Most good retailers will have a com-
plete assortment, and your selection
should be based on the size of your aquar-
ium and the amount of money you decide
to spend.
Once you have set up your aquarium,
you should add a chlorine neutralizer to
the water and add only a few fish initially.
These few fish will help develop the
proper biological conditions necessary to
maintain a fully stocked aquarium.
After three to four weeks, assuming
everything is functioning properly, you
can then go ahead and add the rest of the
fish.
Aquarium maintenance is a lot simpler
than people think. Every two weeks, a
partial water change (no more than 20
percent) is recommended. You can do this
by siphoning the water from the bottom
of the aquarium. A device called the
HydroClean allows an efficient siphoning
by separating the debris in the gravel and
removing it with the water from the
aquarium. On a monthly basis, your filter
will require minimal maintenance. That's
all there is.

tour model homes. Take a good, close
look at a builder's model homes. Are they
soundly built? Are they well finished?
How do they compare with other homes
built by this builder and other builders?
Ask the builder about the types of materi-
als used, the maintenance requirements
and other details of interest to you.
