The push to establish an AIDS hospice in Durham has
been going on for some time and needs support if the
campaign is to gain momentum.
James House organizers have been struggling to raise
money through small events in the hope of establishing a local
facility for people suffering from the disease. The campaign is
heating up now with the support of the Durham Non -Profit
Housing Corporation and a funding proposal put before the
Durham Region District Health Council. James House needs
health council funding before it can turn to jobsOntario for
additional money.
AIDS, without doubt, is the black plague of our lifetime.
It's having a devastating impact on Canadians of all walks of
life and we in Durham have not escaped its death grip.
Health care itself has become a heavy burden to bear, the
cash -devouring beast is under the microscope while
politicians, bureaucrats, medical professionals and residents
neck sclutions to spiralling costs and shrinking services. The
health council's allocated funding for local organizations
won't stretch far enough to cover all requests, according to
Michael Noonan, general manager for Durham Non -Profit
Housing.
It's time for the community to turn its attention to the need
for an AIDS hospice here. James House, a tion -profit support
group for HIV-positive people and their families, founded last
year, is deserving.
Casey House in Toronto opened with fanfare and lots of
media attention, and has been a source of comfort for many
AIDS sufferers. According to its executive director, Susan
Mullin, corporate leaders are becoming more willing to
support the hospice, which also receives S2.8 million annually
in funding from the provincial ministry of health.
It's time to help make our own AIDS hospice a reality.

Enough of this talk about gun control. It's
about time and long overdue that our laws are
changed so that anyone and everyone who uses

The tune has come for our MPs to hold a free

lottery are great, but there are winners.
It's time for Canadians to let our elected
officials know what we, the people, the ones
who have elected them demand that they follow
our wants and concerns.
C'mon. Make us better
You may notice these words are wrapped around
an unfamiliar face in your Sunday edition of the
Ajax -Pickering News Advertiser.
No matter, before long I hope you will come to
know me a little better, either through issues in this
newspaper, functions you may be kind enough to
invite me to, or my visits to your service club or
Community group.
Because that's what your community newspaper is
all about: sharing a voice in our little corner of the
world. As you may be aware, the News Advertiser
has a rich and deeply -rooted history in Ajax and
Pickering. And though the newspaper has changed
with the times, its fundamental goal has remained —
to provide a forum for readers and advertisers, to
provoke thought and discussion in our communities,
to bring attention to what's wrong, to acknowledge
what's right.
The people behind the News Advertiser, the
people who I've had the good fortune to join forces
with, are largely responsible for the newspaper's
success. But so too are the people (like you) who
recognize its strength as that loud, clear voice in the
community.
It +u.::. • . .. `.r,. . a.. W Wb..'.... t tnevwae a+r..+.u•':-,..-...

News Advertiser continue to evolve in the coming
weeks and months. You'll see more reader contests.
more features and more stories.
I encourage you to continue exchanging ideas and
Opinions. through letters to the editor, phone calls to
our newsroom staff, or by dropping into our office.
As your voice in the community, we'll do our best
to give you a continued foram to share your message.
And these times we live in provide fertile ground
for that exchange. A municipal election looms, as
does the spectre of Quebec separation and a
reshaping of the Canadian landscape. Ajax and
Pickering are emerging aggressively and positively
into a new economic cycle (just look around at the
current goings-on in your neighborhood), and the
diversity of our communities continues to grow.
If you've got a beef, or know an athlete who
deserves our attention, or just want to pat someone

That's what we're here for. And we can turn that

Missing man
not believed
a suspect
FROM PAGE 1
Police are treating Mr. Thomas
as a missing person, not a suspect
in the crime, according to Staff
Sergeant Sandy Ryrie.
Lloyd Oatway, 46, who's lived
next door to Mr. Thomas and his
family for the better part of eight
years, believes there's no way his
neighbor had anything to do with
the bloodbath.
"He'd never commit a crime.
He's a family man. I can't think
that he would have anything to do
with that"
Mr. Thomas, a retired
carpenter, suffered a heart attack
about a year ago, Mr. Oatway
-
reports
"He had just recovered from a
heart attack last summer. He had
asked me about taking up golfing."
Mr. Oatway describes the
missing man as the type of
neighbor "who would do anything
for you. I lost a shutter off my
house during a windstorm and he
just put it back up without even
saying anything.
"He was quite helpful. He never
hesitated to help his neighbors.
This is really shocking. It's really
sad. I can't imagine what the
family is going through.-
Mr.
hrough"Mr. Oatway says the incident at
the gun shop and Mr. Thomas's
possible abduction have reinforced
his belief in the reinstatement of
the death penalty as a deterrent to
criminals.
"I'm a firm believer in capital
punishment." he says.
Other neighbors describe Mr.
Thomas, who lived with his wife
and teenage daughter on the
peaceful, middle-class residential
street as a "quite man".
One neighbor, who refused to
identify himself, says the incident
has left people in the area shaken.
"It's definitely scary. It's
certainly going to be more scary
when we find out where he was
abducted from and if be was taken
from the neighborhood.-
I'm
eighborhood"I'm totally amazed with what's
happened," says another neighbor
who also declined to give his
name. "I never spoke with him
apart from saying 'hi'."
Area residents believe their
neighborhood is still safe despite
the incident involving Mr.
Thomas.

STAFF REPORTER
AJAX — Police will employ a little
diplomacy to try to diffuse an ongoing
dispute between a group of youths and
some merchants at Clover Ridge Plaza
here.
Durham Regional Police say the plaza,
at the corner of Westney Rd. S. and
Harwood Ave. S., is used as a hangout by
many youths, prompting complaints to
police from the merchants that customers
are being scared off.
"This is a problem in plazas
over the place," says Insp. Joh
Hamilton of 24 Division in Ajax.
"People feel intimidated by a
large group of youths hanging
out there. It's a very real concern
that the merchants have."

Cancer survivor continues right
O Young Michelle
Stifrett Terry Fox Run
team member
By AL RIVETT
SPORTS REPORTER
AJAX — The battle against
cancer appears over for 12 -year-
old Michelle Stirrett.
Her struggle with cancer may
be through, but the fight against
the dreaded disease continues.
And, Michelle will do her part as
she'll be Ajax's Terry's Team
Member when the 14th edition of
the Terry Fox Run for cancer
research takes to the streets of the
town Sunday.
It's been four years since a
growth on her kidney which
swelled to the size of a football
was diagnosed as Wilm's Tumor
by doctors at the Hospital for Sick
Children in Toronto. After
countless months of chemotherapy
and radiation therapy, 10 surgeries
and two relapses, Michelle has
been free of the cancer for the past
two years.
"It's been two years since her
last (radiation) treatment and three
years since her last relapse,"
explains her mother Linda Stirrett.
"After five years they say they're
technically cures "
"I feel very good," adds
Michelle, shyly.
After the initial diagnosis was
made in June 1990, Michelle was
admitted to the Toronto hospital
where she underwent
chemotherapy to shrink the tumor.
Then, in September 1990, she
underwent surgery to remove one
of her kidneys.
However, despite the initial
chemotherapy treatment and the
removal of the tumor, she suffered
her first relapse in November of
that year. Some cancer cells spread
to her lymph nodes which
necessitated more chemotherapy
Wong with radiation treatments.
In August 1991, she suffered
her second relapse. Doctors at the
Hospital for Sick Children
discovered a tumor behind her
lung which required more surgery
to remove. Strong radiation
treatments continued for the next
eight months until May 1992 when
a sinus infection related to the
treatment forced doctors to cease
radiation therapy. Michelle
underwent more surgery to correct
her sinuses.
Mrs. Stirrett recalls doctors

Through her
ordeal, Michelle
watched 10 friends
she made while at
the Hospital for Sick

cancer. "It was scary
to see my friends
die," she says.
As a Terry's

♦ ELECTION
So,you want to be a politician?
By MARIANNE TAKACS
STAFF RETORM
DURHAM —Want to find out just
who your real friends are?
All you have to do is run for Town
council or the school board in the Nov. 14
municipal election and you'll know soon
enough. The loyal ones will go door-to-
door handing out your brochures and the
pretenders will soon make themselves
scarce.
That was just one tidbit offered by
experienced politicians at a forum on how
to run for office held recently at the
Pickering Public Library. On hand to
provide advice for those thinking about
running in the Nov. 14 municipal election
were Durham Board of Education
Pickering trustee Louise Farr and Robert
Linton, a former member of the Oshawa
Public Utilities Commission and an
experienced campaign organizer for both
federal and provincial candidates.
Mr. Linton made the point about
knowing who your friends are and noted
candidates better have a lot of good pals if
they hope to get elected.
"You will be drawing on your friends,
family, relatives, people at work and
members of your church," said Mr. Linton,
who explained the foot soldiers will be

"If you want to do the job well you're
going to be investing more time than you
think you are," said Mr. Linton.
Mrs. Farr told the forum her work as a
school trustee has been "a cross-section
from elation to absolute despair" as she's
struggled with issues for which there
seemed to be no good answers.
She noted parents are more politically
astute, educated and demanding than ever
before and candidates better be prepared to
deal with them.
She said a trustee must be open-minded.

On top of those qualities, you must
have a thick skin to remain committed to
the work in the face of public demands and
cynicism.
"For every decision that you make, now

Mr. Linton took care to point out there
are times when a politician will enjoy the
gratitude of citizens for a job well done.

Area teletheatre betting
off and running in big way
• Newest off-track betting facility
opens at Moodies in Ajax
By AL RIVETT
SPORTS REPORTER
AJAX — Teletheatre betting on horse races is off and
running in a big way here.
The newest Champions Tele -Wagering establishment
was officially opened at Moodies on Kingston Rd. in
Pickering Village Thursday. Another
teletheatre opened at Mud Hens Taps
& Grill on Kingston Rd. in Pickering
early last month.
Norm Picov, an owner of the
family -nm Picov Downs quarter -horse
racing track in Ajax, reports the two
off-track betting venues are already
proving popular. Picov Downs entered
into a joint venture with the Ontario
Jockey Club, the owner of the
Toronto -area race tracks, to carry the
simulcasts of thoroughbred racing
from Woodbine and Fort Erie and
standardbred races from Woodbine
and Mohawk six days a week.
"Both teletheatres are very
successful.- says Picov. "Probably,
there are 100 people per day per place.
They've hired about 12 to 14 more
People at both places as a result of the
teletheatres."
The economic benefits have
already been felt at Picov Downs,
which, because of new revenue from the teletheatres, has
tripled its purse money at the track to about 55.000 for
every race date.
Picov motes quarter-borse racing at the Ajax track
would have perished without teletheatre betting in
Durham Region. Picov Downs has simulcast betting
from Woodbine each Sunday in addition to the
regular betting on the quarter -horse races.
"Without Frank Drea (Commissioner of the
Ontario Racing Commission which governs horse
racing in the province) we probably wouldn't have
quarter -horse racing in Durham Region today. It
would t'. defnt." says Picov.
_ , - '>urham Region is "a very attractive,
,olid market" for teletheatre
hating on horse races. The two
:letheatres, although in operation
t (r only a short time, are quickly
proving to be "the most successful
teletheatres in North America.
"The Americans are in
awe and we're talking New
Mexico, Arizona, Montana and
California." says Drea of the rapid
,uccess of the Ajax and Pickering
teletheatres.
One patron in attendance
at the grand opening of the
Champions Tele -Wagering at
%loodies was Jerry Thornton of
Oshawa. He says the relaxing
atmosphere has sold him on off-
track betting.
"1 think it's nice and
relaxing," he says. "There's no
rushing and no big crowds. I don't
have to worry about rushing
through traffic to get to
Woodhine."
Picov says there are plans to open a third
teletheatre establishment at the Golden Spurs
Restaurant in Whitby in 1995.

Women's league looks to expand
Z!p
By AL RIVETr
sPMT3 REeoRI'M
AJAX-PICKERING —
Organizers of a recreational
women's ringette league holding
registration next week hope to
expand the loop this season.
Lakeshore Ladies Ringette
League president Sherlyn Poland
says plans are in the works to
create a six -team league with
room for more than 70 players.
Last year, the league boasted five
squads and about 60 women
playing recreational ringette.
The league caters to women
over 21 who want to play the
sport at the recreational level. It's
the only women's ringette league
in operation in Durham Region
with players coming primarily
from Ajax, Pickering, Oshawa
and Whitby and some travelling
from as far away as Courtice and
Unionville.
"We have all levels of players
from the beginner level right up to
the `A' level of player. But, we
try to balance off all the teams,"
says Poland, who notes all women
get equal ice time every game and
no body contact is allowed.
Wilma Larochelle, who also
plays in the league. says it's a
game that beginners can easily
learn.
"If you can skate in any way,
it's easy to start up. It's a fun
night out too. It keeps you in
shape:"
Women play each Sunday.
Tuesday and Thursday night at
the Ajax Community Centre arena
from late September until early
April.
In addition, the league has a
Christmas party, a year-end
banquet and a tournament which
runs in Ajax over the March
break.
League registration is at the
Ajax Community Centre lobby on
Wednesday, Sept. 21. from 7 to 9
p.m. The last chance to sign up is
Tuesday, Sept. 27 from 8 to 10
p.m. New players will be able to
take to the ice that night for an
information session on the rules
of the league, instructed by
experienced players.
The league is also looking for
sponsors for the coming season.
For more information, call
Poland at 666-3372, Larochelle at
839-5647 or Lin Nowitski at 683-
3856.

SPECIALISTS
THIS WEEK FEATURING:
"Plumbing For You"
Service has always been the top pri-
ority and the key to success for
Plumbing For You in Pickering.
The store is located at 1050 Brock
Rd. Unit 15 and has grown despite the
recent recession. That's in large part
due to the knowledgeable staff who have
more than 40 years experience enabling
them to help their customers with all of
their plumbing needs.
Tod Harvey is one of those people
who goes out of his way to help his cus-
tomers.
A plumber for more than 12 years
and a partner with Dave Greenberg,
Todd has been with Plumbing For You
since 1990 and if he's not in the store
helping customers, he's on the road doing
any job big or small from installing a set
of taps to renovating a complete bath-
room or kitchen.
He's also available seven days a
week, 24 hours a day, for those times
when you need a plumber and the store
is closed.
"At our store we make sure that we
answer all of our customers questions
and give advice when they're doing a job
on their own," explains Tod.
Dave also has another plumbing vet-
eran on staff.
Ralph Sherman has been a plumber
for more than 30 years and when you ask
him a question he'll also provide you
with the right answers so you get exactly
what you need and gives free advice for
do-it-yourselfers so their project goes
smoothly.
From sinks to whirlpools, from
washers to taps, Plumbing For You
sells the highest quality products at very
competitive prices and does this by pass-
ing on savings where ever they can by
keeping overhead low and getting great
deals from their suppliers.
The store is open Mon., Tues.,
Weds., and Fri., from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.;
Thurs. 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Sat., 9 a.m. to 5
p.m. and Sun., 10 am. to 4 p.m.
