The News Advertiser regularly uses tcled newsprint fl 7s time to get tough Roger Pardy said so himself — the government is not doing enough about criminals who use guns in committing offences. It's ironic and sad that just a few months after making that statement in a newspaper interview, Mr. Pardy was brutally shot to death in his store as he went about the business of legally selling guns to responsible owners. His belief that tougher treatment of criminals is the answer to the firearm -law controversy is echoed on a sign outside his Simcoe Street sporting goods shop, which advocates, "Crime Control, Not Gun Control". Three other people were shot at Gagnon Sports that night, but there are even more victims; the family and friends of the deceased and the injured are suffering today. And there's a missing Pickering man whose fate is unknown after Mr. Pardy's assailants used his car as a getaway vehicle. His family too, is in agony today. And, it's possible the masked bandits themselves have families who are going through hell. The pros and cons over tougher gun -control legislation have been debated time and time again. Before his death at the hands of ruthless criminals, Mr. Pardy suggested the real solution lies with the courts. "The government is trying to implement a lot more gun control, but they're not doing anything about the criminals who use guns in firearms offences," he said last July. "We want them to get a 10 -year minimum sentence." It's time. For the Pardy family, it's past the time. Let's start throwing the book at trigger-happy criminals. am e was a e ai'r an s u r e a To the editor: Re: Letter to the editor on Wednesday. Sept. 7, regarding "Youths losers with tainted soccer victory.' 1 am responding to an open letter concerning the under 13 soccer tournament which was held on Aug. 27 at Monarch Park.Mr. Jim Bieser accused the winning 'red team' of stacking the side with ineligible players. According to the Ajax soccer convener, the red team did have an additional two players that were placed on the team earlier in the season due to their own team being short of players. These players were given the opportunity to finish out the regular season and were placed on the 'red team' by the convener. It should be understood that the opposing 'white team' was invited to participate in the under 13 house league as a gesture of 'good will' on behalf of the Ajax soccer association and that this was a Cup Day for all participants with no emphasis on previous games played during the season. Each team ended the day with hot dogs, drinks and a trophy. The game played on Aug. 27 went to full regulation time, overtime and then a shootout. The winning goal was scored by one of the original 'red team' players. The match was eventually determined by goal keeping skills, with a final score of 4-3 to the victorious 'red team'. To suggest that this game was won by cheating is far from the truth. Mr. Bieser complained that there were a lot of upset young men on the 'white team'; just imagine how upset the 'red team' was when reading his letter to the editor. 1 hope this letter helps Mr. Bieser understand the damage he may have caused to junior soccer in general and that he, as an assistant coach of the 'white team', realizes how `hollow' his letter was. TheWoodsor AAAA aftam — — 0 nT SHAWA R E E K New Homes aaQ Iaterlors Liza says forget the floorplans at Victoria Garden You've heard the old adage "seeing is believing." Well, that is certainly the case at Victoria Garden — a community of Victorian - style luxury freehold town - homes in Bowmanville. Liza Homes says "there is no imagination required" when you come in to look at these beautiful homes. That means that you don't have to use your imagination while staring at floorplans and trying to picture what your new home will look like once you move in. At Victoria Garden, there is now a model of every design being built. You sim- ply have to walk through the homes and see which design and layout best suits your needs. The word "new" is also stirring up excitement at Victoria Garden. There is a new model home, freshly decorated and furnished and ready for viewing. There is a new release of lots adja- cent to Sagewood Park, which has just been finished and is now open — and new. This beautiful townhome community features one of Canada's favorite home - design styles. There is noth- ing quite like the charming character of a Victorian home. It brings back memo- ries of days gone by, of chil- dren playing safely in the yard, of family and friends getting together and of backyard barbecues. At Victoria Garden, homebuyers find the intri- cate brick work, the ginger- bread trim, the arched win- dows, peaked gables and covered porches that makes this home style so immense- ly popular. In the kitchen, you will find crafted quality cabinets. double stainless- steel sink and single -lever washerless faucets. Other features include mid -effi- ciency forced -air gas fur- nace, natural -finish oak pickets and handrails on the main staircase, rough -ins for central vacuum, telephone and cable -TV and many more luxury and conve- nience features which we have come to want and need as part of our daily lives. Some of the features you find in these beautiful homes include ceramic tile, sunken foyers, 12 -foot ceil- ings in the living _room, full ensuites with oval tub, spa- cious kitchens and family rooms in most plans. For example, consider the new model — the Canterbury — which can be a two- or three-bedroom home and, along with its long list of standard features, also includes luxurious touches like a three -sided fireplace. Best of all is the fact that these homes are incredibly priced. Homes of Victoria Garden start at $109,990, for the 1,046-sq.ft. Victorian, and range up to $129,990. for the spacious 1.607-sq.ft. Coventry as a corner unit. Parkside lots are now avail- able and there are a limited number of walkout lots still available. Freehold town - homes means there are no monthly maintenance fees. The architectural influ- ence of the Victorian era is more popular than ever with home buyers. Now, you can own a piece of Victorian luxury and elegance. Victoria Garden is a close- knit community that offers the best of country and city living. The Bowmanville location offers a setting that features quiet streets and relaxed pace of smalltown living, while shopping and recreation amenities that we tend to associate with bigger cities are close by. So, don't use your imagi- nation. Visit the Victoria Garden sales office. You will like what you see. To visit Victoria Garden go west on Hwy. 401 to the Waverly Rd. exit in Bowmanville. Proceed north to Lawrence, turn left and then right on Rhonda and follow the signs to the sales office and models. Sales office hours are 2 to 8 p.m. from Monday through Thursday and noon to 6 p1n. on weekends. The sales office is closed on Fridays. "There has probably never been a better time to buy a new home than right now." says Mary Lawson, a spokesperson for the Canadian Home Builders' Association. "In order to boost consumer confidence. builders are offering some great deals. Today's buyers are getting incredible value for their money." Affordability has hardly been better. Stabilized mort- tau,e rates have reduced the cost of buying a house and enabled consumers to afford higher priced homes. "Today's move -up buyers are finding that they can buy "more house for their money" than they expected. Builders are offering a vast selection of new homes. specifically tailored to move - up buyers. with all the fea- tures and amenities that these consumers could not afford in their previous homes — large bedrooms with ensuites. spa- cious bathrooms with whirlpool tubs, mainfloor laundry rooms, lots and lots of windows in all sizes and shapes, bright and efficient kitchens, formal and informal dining eating areas. green- house kitchens and many other features that add to the quality of life through com- fort. convenience and aesthet- ic pleasure. At the same time. builders are beginning to see a number of changes in the demands and desires of move -up buy- ers. Streamlined design is an important concern for today's economically -minded con- sumer and move -up buyers want :t carefully -planned lay- out that maintains it feeling of openness. Energy efficiency and reducing the monthly heating bill is becoming more impor- tant and the concerns about indoor air quality and other environmental issues are becoming more common. Housing types to suit your needs While the single-family home on it private lot contin- ues to have strong appeal as the "home of our dreams." ninny other types of housing provide great benefits to prospective homebuyers — whether they are purchasing.: their first home. moving up or look]ng for a smaller house. If you are concerned about the affordability and want to reduce the mainte- nance requirements of a sin- gle-family home or you desire to increase your dis- cretionary income. the mar- ketplace offers many alter- natives to the single-family dwelling, in a variety of designs and price ranges to suit your needs and pocket- book. Knowing the terminology used to describe these alter- natives can be helpful as you browse through builders' ads and talk with salespeople in model homes and sales offices. Here is a brief overview of ownership options and some of the more common housing types available on the market: OWNERSHIP OPTIONS Freehold — You own the home and the land that it sits on. with the accompanying privileges and responsibib- ties. Condominium— You own the home. The land and/or common areas are the prop- erty and responsibility of the condominium corporation of which you become a partner when you buy the home. HOUSING TYPES Townhouse— Single-family units. usually three or more. that are lined up in a row and share common walls. Often. each unit will have a backyard and a garage. Ownership can be freehold or condominium. Townhomes have become a popular housing form in many parts of the country in recent vears. Stacked Townhouse — Two townhomes "stacked" one on top of the other and joined in symmetrical. or asymmetrical. configura- tions to create an interesung streetscape and a greater sense of privacy. Garden Home — Rowhouses with condomini- um ownership. each unit havine both a front and back entrance and shared parking in the form of parking lots. Carriage Home —A semi- detached townhouse in which the two homes are joined by a garage or carport that provides access between the front and rear yard~. Maisonette — Similar to a stacked townhouse. but consists of four units (two on top of two others). Manor Blocks — A multi- unit building with the look of a sprawling English coun- try home. Link Homes — Horses that are joined by the basement walls only. Semi-detached Homes — One building on its own lot consisting of two units that share one common wall and have separate entrances. Duplexes— A two -unit dwelling on its own lot with one unit above the other. 1 r, NEW MOM i NTE!>tOM 101119PAGE 11 s 6Y NEW WOODLOT RELERSE LIMITED NUMBER!
