Townsfolk are invited to check out the fine hall at Finch Ave. and Dixie Rd. at a public open house Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 pm. The open house will include a barbecue to raise money for the Ross Tilley Bum Unit of Wellesley Hospital in Toronto. No local hospital provides care for serious burn patients, and the Wellesley unit, as the nearest, serves Pickering. The opening of the new fire hall has followed months of controversy. In order to cut cost.%. Town councillors originally approved a 1993 budget which would only have provided for five additional firelighters to be hired for the new station. With that limited staff, the facility would only have functioned part-time. Councillors later voted in favor of running the station full-time at a higher cost in part because the Pickcrim; Firelighters' Association, which under its collective agreement must approve shift schedules, refused to agree to a part-time arrangement. As well, opening of the new hall, originally set for early July, was delayed due to construction problems. So, they'll have to police themselves for a long time to come. Mr. Parish had asked his peers on Town council to endorse a policy prohibiting themselves and candidates to local office from accepting contributions from developers to help fund municipal election campaigns. While Mr. Parish failed to win the support of a majority of council for his suggestion, he succeeded in reminding present politicians and people who aspire to power of the need to keep their noses clean. He argued the public has a "perception of prejudice" if candidates in a municipal election like the one coming up Nov. 14 accept money from developers and then have to consider development applications when they're on council. Mr. Parish is right, of course. In fact, he's considerably understated the public's cynicism toward politics and politicians. The average person considers politics a dirty game played by sleazy people. That image wasn't exactly enhanced earlier this summer when a Metro Toronto councillor from the City of York was found guilty of municipal corruption after accepting bribes from a developer. So, Mr. Parish's suggestion came at a good time, just weeks after that court finding and mere months before the municipal election. The only thing wrong with his motion was that it singled out developers as people most likely to try to use undue influence on politicians_ The politicians in Ajax voted 5-3 to reject Mr.Parish's motion, leaving the municipal election candidates the option of accepting developer contributions. Those councillors must be above board in taking campaign donations and in their dealings on behalf of all contributors after the election. We will be watching.
