Easing transition to Grade 9
By SAL BOMMARITO
STAFF RfPORM
DURHAM — Leaving the coniines of elementary
school for the unfamiliar surroundings of high school
can be a very daunting experience for a young student.
But secondary schools throughout Durham Region,
recognizing the transition to high school is a difficult
one, have taken appropriate steps to help students
entering Grade 9 make the adjustment.
"We tell (Grade 9 students), `We want to make high
school pleasurable, fun and rewarding and we're going
to give you an education, too,"' says Andy Fedak,
principal of Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary
School in Whitby.
Mr. Fedak says the process of helping students
make the transition U) high school is "ongoing. It stats
in Grade 8 or earlier because of the relationship we
have with some of our (elementary) schooN."
Like Father Leo J. Austin, many secondary schools
hold orientation sessions for Grade 8 students in their
feeder schools in June. Orientation days are also held at
the start of the new school year to make Grade 9
students feel welcome.
The orientation days are designed to help Grade 9
students become familiar with their school. how their
course timetable works and which extra -curricular
activities and clubs are available to them.
"When Grade 9 students fust come to high school
they don't know anybody and they don't know who w
turn to for help," explains Dave Roberts, a guidance
counsellor and Grade 9 orientation day organizer at
R.S. McLaughlin Collegiate Vocational Institute in
Oshawa.-Tbey're also afraid to talk to people and very
often in Grade 9 they won't get involved in after-
school activities, but they lose out on a year if they
don't get involved until Grade 10.-
Schools
0"Schools also hold assemblies to remind Grade 9
students of the different expectations and
responsibilities which will be placed upon them at high
school.
"At the assembly we explain the few rules that we
have, that they have to follow and outline our
expectations," says Pamela Christoff, principal of
Exeter High School in Ajax.
Orientation se.'ssicros are also opportunities for Grade
9 students to meet school staff, including the principal
and vice -principals, and more importantly, senior
students who will act as their "mentors •.
In otter words, Grade 9 students will have someone
to tum to, other than a teacher or student their own age,
if they are having problems adjusting to high school.
Excited and nervous Grade 9 students look

for new pupils at Exeter High School in Ajax on
Wednesday. photo by Ron Pietroniro
At Exeter, those who attended the orientation day
last week had group discussions with teachers and
older stude-nL% who will act as their mentors.
After making initial contact with their mentors, the
students touch base with them once a mcxnth.
"Having a menta makes the new student feel moo
secure," Mrs. Christoff explains.
The best way for a new student to become
acclimated to the high school setting is by getting
involved in extra -curricular activities, acarding to Derr
Riddle, principal of G.L. Roberts CVI in Oshawa
We want them to join things so they have a
positive attitude toward the school and their education
and it helps create self-worth and self-confidence.- he
says.
Many schools have slrLtd sign-up days for Grade
9 students who want to join school clubs and teams.
Other schools hold orientation dances for Grade 9
students to help them meet new friends.
We want to get as much school spirit going in
Grade 9 as pors.%ble," Mr. Roberts ad d%.

Racism war
For those of us horrified at the recent spate of hate
literature distributed anonymously in some area
communities, news from the Multicultural Council of
Oshawa Durham couldn't come at a better time.
The council is embarking on a project encouraging
cultural groups in Durham to submit anti -racism
strategy proposals that will encourage understanding in
the larger community in which we all live.
It's a perfect antidote to the efforts of the few racists
in the region who use the cover of night to disseminate
their ridiculous notions of white supremacy.
The timing of the council's efforts — whether by
design or coincidence — should go a long way to
reaching reasonable people in the region who seek to
understand the diverse nature of their communities.
Durham Region media in the past have taken the
Multicultural Council to task for not being more vocal
in speaking out against groups such as the Heritage
Front and the anonymous distribution of racist
propaganda. Therefore, it must be noted that the
council's efforts today and in the pact are welcomed.
Continued efforts such as this project, which will
promote the benefits of racial and cultural diversity in
our communities, are succeeding. As for the racists
(and you know who you are), your methods are seen
for what they are by tolerant people: cowardly,
ineffective and silly.
The Multicultural Council of Oshawa Durham is the
primary voice for the cultural mosaic in our little
corner of the world. The News Advertiser urges the
council, its members and the community at large to
make that voice a chorus.
And sing your message as loud as you possibly can.
Racists may be stupid, but they can't be deaf too.

Family thankful for 'spiritual boost'
recerr
ved at Campus Crusade Youth Rall y
To the editor:
Our family had the opportunity to enjoy one
night of the Youth Rally held (Aug. 11) at the
Ajax Rotary Park, sponsored by Campus
Crusade. It was a wonderful evening of
exhilarating talent from dedicated young
people, with a message for all.
We were thankful for the team work, of so
many who had volunteered to present this
program. in such an excellent way. We continue
to marvel at the professional level of talent of
the young people here in Ajax and Pickering.
We also "Praise the Lord" for the infectious
excitement and motivation that was
demonstrated in the testimony and lives of the
young there at the park. We were encouraged
and uplifted. We just wished that our young
people had been able to be there every night.
We are thankful that we live in a free country
where we were able to use public facilities for
positive, youth and family -centred activities.
The young people emphasized moral
convictions, plus a love and concern for God
and others. Such living examples make a
positive difference in our community.
Thank you everyone for giving us a spiritual
boost and an encouraging experience.
Yea for our YOUITi!
With Prayers and Appreciation,
When the doctor's a pain in the neck..*
From the

editor's desk
So, there we were, at the office of the specialist supposed
b spacralin in such things, looking for a remedy for this pain
in the neck that we've been suffering for over a decade now,
this pain in the neck that has our mug slightly askew in the
column mug shot over duere.
"So. Doc, exam us, Doctor Sir, with the several initials
behind your name up on the wan on your licence to practise,
what can you do about our misaligned spite, just how can
you screw our head on straight?"
"Well, there's always surgery. ('Ca Ching, ca Ching' we
could hear the cash register going in his head.) But, to
operate would be to mutilate. rve seers this surgery before
and, believe me, it's not a pretty sight. There were knives
everywhere, scalpels I think they're called. And the
biood...yttck, I thought I was going to faint. We'd have to cut
every nerve in your neck; one slip and your bead could be
spinning around like Linda Blair's character's in The
Exorcist You dont want that, do you?"
"Well it would amuse cocktail party guests and small
children tired of our thumb removal illusion."
"I'm not going to fix it, son. You are."
"What's that? I'm going to fur it? How's that?"
"Lifestyle, scat, lifestyle."
"You mean a change in lifestyle can repair damage done
by two tumbles down a flight of 13 stairs? And here I thought
those falls were at fault, that they were the rause."
"It's difficult to say what was the causation (honest, his
word)."
That abuse of the English language sent a shiver up our
spine • And, the pain m our neck started getting worse. This
time, we knew the exact causation. We felt like asking for a
heavy-duty pain killer, but knew we wouldn't find one in the
Office of this doctor, who writes prescriptions that read
"Patient, heal thyself." Oh well, we knew we'd be outta there
soon since his meter was running close to Tune expired'.
And, thele was a bar just down the street where we could kill
the pain.
"But," the medic mumbled, "we do know the cure.
"Change your lifestyle• Quit watching so much TV, get some
exercise and cut down the ethanol intake."
With that, we knew he was a quack. "See ya' around, Doc.
Don't fan off your wallet you might break your neck."
We were outta there, probably never to mtum again We
bypassed the bar and went searching for another opinion, the
fifth one if we count the specialist who spent most of his time
during our appointment complaining about the social
contract's impact on him.
And, we got that fifth opinion. There is hope for urs yet

STAFF REPORTER
PICKERING — A major change is
planned in the way used radioactive fuel is
stored at the Pickering Nuclear Generating
Station.
Ontario Hydro is just completing
construction of a new used fuel dry
storage facility at the station, and has
applied to the Atomic Energy Control
Board (AECB) to begin using late this
year. AECB staff have recommended a
licence be issued for operation of the
facility, and the public has
until Sept. 16 to comment on
the application.
Construction was approved
by the AECB in fall of 1992
and was underway by spring
of 1993.
Until now, used fuel has
been stored in "pools" at the
station, with the water in the
pools acting as a radiation
shield and coolant.
"We will continue to use
pools, but we're running out
of pool storage space," says
Brian Thompson, stakeholder
relations officer for the The
Pickering station. Dry storage
has been chosen as a "safe and
economical" alternative. Its
advantage over pool storage is that dry
storage containers require little or no
maintenance.
According to an AECB staff report, the
current storage capacity of the pools at the
station is expected to be exhausted by the
end of 1994.
Mr. Thompson notes the dry storage
method has been used at other nuclear
stations in Canada and around the world
"for several decades". At Pickering, the
oldest used fuel currently stored in pools
will go into the new storage facility first.
Used fuel will only go into dry storage
after at least six years in a pool, where it
cools and loses about 99 per cent of its
radioactive output. The one per cent that
remains is still quite hazardous.
According to Mr. Thompson, used fuel
can be kept safely under current conditions
in the pools for 50 to 100 years, but still

and a half metres (11.6 ft) high,
constructed primarily of reinforced
concrete and weighing approximately 53
metric tonnes when empty and 63 metric
tonnes when filled with about 384 fuel
bundles. The concrete and steel lid on
each is to be welded to the container
body.
Phase one of the S%million dry
storage facility is designed to
accommodate approximately 700 DSCs
in a 7,400 -square -metre (80,000 -square -
foot) building on the station property
southeast of the number eight
reactor. All the DSCs
together will be able to hold a
total of 268.900 bundles of
used fuel —so there will be
enough storage space for
approximately the next 10
years. A second phase of
about the same size is
planned for the future.
However, in order to defer
capital expenditures and
provide the opportunity to
reassess facility requirements,
phase one has been further
divided into two stages. The
first stage being completed
now will provide storage for
about 185 DSCs, which
should be enough to last the
station until the end of 1997. Construction
of the second stage is tentatively
scheduled to begin early next summer.
The AECB staff report recommends
the new Pickering facility be exempt from
any requirement for public review by a
panel.
"It doesn't need any big further review
because the potential (environmental)
impact is so little," says Robert Potvin,
public affairs supervisor for the AECB.
The staff report notes Ontario Hydro
has already undertaken a public
information program on the new facility_
That program, according to the report, has
included briefings and site tours for
municipal officials, a two-day open house
(attended by five members of the public)
and guided tours for local residents, a
newsletter to all households in Pickering
anti Ajar, and a public attitude survey.
Pickering Nuclear Generating Station's new dry storage facility
is expected to be in use by the end of the year.
Nuclearplant moves
to new way of storing
used radioactive fuel
has to be specially stored after that. lie
reports it takes about 300 years for the used
fuel to lose enough radioactivity for safe
handling by workers under controlled
conditions, and LOW years until there is no
danger at all from handling it.
Ultimately, says Mr. Thompson, the
Canadian government has plans, not yet

The Legend of Zelda a super game
Zelda has a good heart and tries to save maidens by beating masters and
castles. There is two worlds in the game, light world and dark world, both have
some castles. When Zelda beats Ganott the master of the game the good king
comes back and the maidens are free. Zelda becomes the King of the Legend.
We have beat Ganon and the game is really good. People who have Zelda. I
hope they enjoy it and they beat Ganon too.

Mortal Combat:
Mortal Kombat is a game of Sega Genesis, Nes. Game Gear. To pass Mortal
Kombat, you need skills. The fighters are called: Liu Kang, Johnny Cage,
Kano, Sonya, Scorpio, Sub -Zero, and Rayden. The code - when the screen says
the code word and a bunch of other things. By pressing Abacabb. This will take
you to the blood fights. There are two other fighters also at the end of the game.
They are known as Goro and Shang Tsung. I have completed the game. The
graphics are very good, and 1 rate the game Excellent.

The Client is heart -pounding good
I never thought I would be reading an adult novel by the age of 11.
But I did and I am glad to say that the "Client", by John Grisham, was
excellent! Sometimes in the beginning of books it is very boring, not
in the Client! 1 1)
I just couldn't wait to turn the next page! It
was heart -pounding and suspenseful! I
haven't seen the movie yet, but it can't be
better then the original book!
It's all about an eleven year old boy, Mark .1
Sway, who had an encounter with a suicidal Sir
lawyer. The lawyer left Mark knowing a bloody
and explosive secret!
Read the book to know more!

THIS WEEK FEATURING:

beautify your home.
Jamie O'Flaherty of O'Flaherty's
Landscaping and Garden Centre
says this is a good time to plant treses and
shrubs around your home.
"Now that the real hot weather is
over, trees and shrubs will avoid the
shock that sometimes occurs after they're
planted," he says. "In the weather we're
having now, they'll thrive and establish a
good root system before the cold weather
comes:
At O'Flaherty's you can still take
advantage of great savings with 30 to
50% off plants and shrubs.
They also specialize in interlocking
brick walkways and driveways as well as
steps, retaining walls and pool
perimeters.
Jamie uses Oaks Precast Industries
interlocking brick because he says it's
durable, has size and colour consistency
over
time.
The centre is perfect for the do-it-
yourselfer with everything you need to
transform your home into the envy of the
neighbourhood.
You can also take advantage of
Jamie's talents as a landscape designer.
All his work is guaranteed for three
years "in writing" and he always makes
sure that his customers are happy with
the finished results.

Dealing with an absent interviewer
If an interview fails to show up, try not to take it personally. He or she may have been
delayed at a branch office, or possibly could just be a rude person. Wait about 30 minutes.
If there is no indication when the interviewer might arrive, tell the receptionist that you
have to leave. If you're determined to get a job with the particular company, say that
you're interested in setting up another meeting time.
You can convert this disappointment to your advantage by the wav you conduct
yourself. You may be totally `ticked off, but having spent the time getting to the office.
waiting, let alone the pre -interview tension you've gone through. But, be friendly and
understanding and don't show impatience or irritation (even though you probably feel
It'). Try to appear unaffected by the rudeness of the absent interviewer.
It could just be that the receptionist will relay a favourable opinion of you to the
interviewer before vour next meeting.
This wav, you'll ha%e an advantage before the interview even begins.

PF IN LOVING MEMORY
OF A SON AND BROTHER
ON HIS 17TH BIRTHDAY
Haw doe a family cope atter
the accidetwl death of its
you lipst member? Kay and
Ron Warne am facing; tins
question now after the death of
Key's yonun6est ser, Trevor
White (16), on August 5. The
answer ties in the strength of the
family's members who am
)eon* together and supporting
each other through this difficult time. Trevor's brothers:
Jason, Kevin David and Ron ate forming even strm#r
bonds than before. And although David and Ron were
technically Trevor's stepbnthoirm the otter brothers and
everyone who knows this family is aware that they all
consider themseforn'brodneW.
In the wake of this tragic accident they have supptirted
thrix parents and have been comforted by each other and
relatives and friends who have been a constant 3ourcabf
strength. But the road -hockey games will not be the same
and neither will the family's game tlf Pict.tinary or
charades, Will they still do these things? Yes, because they
feel that by continuing to do the things Trevt r enpryed
they will keep him in their lives. Trevor White will be
mused. About that there is rete question. His tamely and
friends will St. im though, aided tui a large extent by the
love they all have in their hemb for this caring, thtnightful
and hardworking young rnai.
