The local branch is urging students, new and regular donors to attend, as all blood types are needed. All persons in good health from 17 to 70 can give the gift of life. Donors at the upcoming clinic must have waited 56 days since the last time they gave blood. W -year career in 1995 By SAL BOMMARITO STAFF REPORTER DURHAM — After 14 years as director of education for the Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board, Dr. Earl Lagroix wants to make way for .new leadership. "After 14 years I've seen a lot of changes and tremendous growth. But there are major changes in store and there should be new leadership to take the school board into the 21st century." says the 59 -year-old former school teacher and principal. lie describes his decision to retire next year as a "difficult one. But when you're on top is the time to leave. If I had listened to my heart I would have stayed, but my intellect tells me it's the appropriate time." Although Mr. Lagroix officially announced his retirement Wednesday, it won't take effect until March 31, 1995, giving the school board ample opportunity to find a new director. Ideally, Mr. Lagroix would like to see someone in place by Jan. 1, 1995 *'so I can work with them for three months before leaving." The board of trustees will meet next week to decide on its plan of action for replacing Mr. Lagroix, who feels there are many prospective candidates already working for the board. "I don't have a preference on whether they hire from inside or outside. But there are some excellent people who work within the board who would make excellent candidates." He says more than anything he'll miss board co-workers. "I'll miss the people I work with — from the staff here at the school board to the principals and vice -principals. "But 1 won't miss those late- night meetings with the trustees," Mr. Lagroix quips. On a more serious note, he says, "If anything, when you get older, you come to realize (the job) takes its toll on your life. If there was a way of accepting part of the responsibility of being the director, without the other things, I would like to do it. But you can't ease out of this job." With all the unresolved issues there are relating to education today, a group of local teachers has nothing more important to complain about than the Christmas holidays. The Durham Board of Education's decision to schedule its Christmas break from Dec. 23 to Jan. 9 has upset some Dunbarton Iligh School teachers enough that they've started a petition. The teachers at the Pickering school argue their holidays should coincide with those of other school boards. They probably don't realize they sound as childish as some of the youngsters who'll W heading off to kindergarten soot. The school board establied its 1994-9+4t calendar after consulting with parents, the hers' union and neighboring school botutls, says administrative officer Sally Mcllveen. It shouldn't be an issue at all, but at least 40 Durham teachers are annoyed they won't be off work on exactly the same dates as their Scarborough colleagues, who'll be on holiday Dec. 16 to Jan. 2. One teacher says it's "disgusting" a large number of board personnel won't be observing the same holidays as the rest of their family members employed by or enrolled in other school systems. Out here in the real world, however. kits of double -income families will find that mom and dad's Christmas holidays won 't match up exactly. Somehow, we'll manage. Now, before I go any further, everyone might be interested to know the Oxford Dictionary's definition of infrastructure: 1 (a) the basic structural foundations of a society or enterprise; a substructure of tureproj* foundation (b) roads, bridges, sewers etc. regarded as a country's economic foundation. This definition obviously does not include such outlandish extravagances as a S23 -million grant to keep NHL hockey in Edmonton, a S173 -million trade centre in Toronto, or a white elephant such as a 'Claredome' in the hamlet of Claremont. This 'dome' will create approximately one permanent job! What may I ask are our elected ects hurt taxpayers representatives smoking? Oris the air so thin in their ivory towers that they can no longer pull together a single rational thought'? The above mentioned "projects" are NOT infrastructure, they are pork barreling. Pork barreling as defined by Funk and Wagnalls is: "a federal appropriation for some local enterprise that will favorably impress a representative's constituents." These government pork barreling projects are neither socially. economically, nor morally justifiable. I am one, furious, unimpressed constituent who is working feverishly to make sure all governments guilty of pork barreling are NOT re-elected! Blue Rodeo rides into town By AL RIVL= STAFF REPORTER AJAX-PICKERING — What better way to celebrate your birthday than by playing music for several hundred faros? That's what Blue Rodeo drummer Glenn Milchem will do when he and his band mates perform at the Canadian Roots Rock Series finale at Ajax's Annandale Golf and Country Club on Thursday. Selz. R. "Yeah, 1'11 be celebrating my birthday in Ajax. I guess Ajax will holo new significance for me:' says Milchem, who turns 31 that day. The Ajax gig is part of Blue Rodeo's cross -Canada tour in support of the top Canadian Nind's latest musical offering Five Days in July, their fifth album, an acoustic effort which was literalh• made in five days while recording at the Toronlo-area farm of guitarist and voL`tlist Greg Keelr last July. Like most of the shows on the Blue Rodeo tour, which began in January, the Annandale show is completely sold out. Milchem explains the current Live Days in July tour has proved to br markedly different from oxlx'rti in the hand's history. "Its been an extremely positive experience. But, its a been a bit of a departure for the barna since the last album is all acoustic. Its more dynamo — not loud all the way through. Then are a lot more peaks and valleys. It's challenging;. You have to he more responsive to play quietly when that's what's called for or to rock out as the need may be. I'Itimalel%. it's a lot more satisfying: Taking the stage at small venues like :'Annandale is nothing new to Milchem and Blue Rodeo. "We've played our share of curling clubs;' says the drummer who joined the group a little more than two years ago. Futurekids. the learning centre where the art of acquiring knowledge equate% with enjoyment', is hosting another open house. on Sept. 8. For two hours - from 7-9 p.m. - visitors to the open house will discover why numerous children have excelled in learning, using the computer as a tool. Chris !Madden. of the Futurekids learning centre. explains the philosophy of the centre, which is based on the premise that -Children learn best when they are motivated and excited." As a result. Chris sa}s. "they are more likely to become independent learners if they are having fun." The centre's curriculum focuses on computer mastery. By making computer instruction fun, children find that learning comes easily. The curriculum is specially designed for each age level, from as young as pre- schoolers. As a result. you might find very young students concentrating on shape recognition. while a more advanced student can learn robotics. Topics include Computer Assisted Math and Reading. Logical Thinking Skills. Problem Solving and Creativity. Memory Enhancement. as well as Word Processing. Windows, Graphics. and much more. The centre applies theme - based course modules, an approach which provides a rich context in which to deliver its Futurekids instructional objective.. Thursday's open house is an opportunity to experience firsthand just why the school has been so successful in its few short years of operation. Chris cites other reasons for the centre's success. however. While the computer enhances one's learning experience. the Futurekids philosophy does not replace human interaction. Children are not left simply to work on the computer for an extended time period. Indeed. this school strives "to give children a balance between teacher contact and hands-on computer experience." The centre's small -group atmosphere serves as a support base: it provides an emotionally supportive environment, where children are free to experiment. to try and fail, before trying again and succeeding. In addition to in -school instruction. Futurekids has also Why Advertise In Focus On Business?
