Included in the provincial/federal government allocation is S29.6 million for nine regional projects and nearly S5 million for several local projects. A friend told her about the organization and its volunteer program. "1 always wanted to go to the Third World and do volunteer work." she says. M s Nathani was posted in the village of Changa. which has a population of about 2.000, most of whom work as laborers. She was one of three volunteers at the home, which provides shelter to 10 people, including children ranging in age from three to 10 years. Kids staving at the home end up there in a variety of ways. Some are found living on streets, while four children and their mother were abandoned when the father left. One boy's mother died and another will stay at the facility until he's 16. when he'll return home to care for his crippled father. Residents at the home are "used to Canadian volunteers," Ms. Nathani notes. "Volunteers are constantly coming in. The children are used to all the volunteers. They're happy to see a new face." The two residents were out last week cutting the purple weed, which is slowly ctx*jng off bulrushes, cattails and other marsh plants which help ply the water by filtering out Pollutants. "It's really getting hold of Pickering," says Mrs. Warhurst. "It's endangering everything in the marsh. They don't know any way to control it other than cutting it down to its roots " The Warhursts began cutting the prolific plant, which Mrs. Warhurst describes as "tough, woody sttet'f," in an area around their home, which backs on to Bruce Hanscombe Memorial Pdrk. They then targeted an area just north of Bayly St. and south of the CNR tracks between Whites Rd. and West Shore Blvd. where the purple to nestrife was gmwing. The Warhursts then celled the Town of Pickering, which agreed to pick up several garbage bags that had been filled with the plant. We thought it might inspire other people to do othcx arras. It would smother everything out there if you let it grow, says Mrs. Warhurst- But other community groups are also chipping in to help reduce the plant's damaging effects on the Vern Mason. a spokesman for the Pickering Rod and Gun Club, says there's concern purple loosestrife will have a harmful effect on wildlife if it is allowed to grow unchecked. In Whitby last week, there was the spectacle of dozens of families setting up camp — some waiting as long as 24 hours — at Iroquois Park Arena to assure their place in the hockey registration lineup. As a result, parents are passing around a Petition to press the local government into building a new arena. While the situation may not be quite that desperate in Ajax and Pickering, where ice pads have recently been built, the incidence of kids being turned away in registration lineups at this time of year is newrtheless fairly universal. Ice spcxts can kxxn pretty large in the eyes of a little boy or girl. And being turned away from the registration desk can seem like a major catastrophe for a youngster whose heart is set on playing Canada's favorite sport — hockey — or the increasingly -popular ringette. Thc: issue can be just as Large for many a parent who hats to try to explain the situation to a disappointed child. Right now govLmmcnts, load and otherwise, are feeling a serious and perhaps kxtg-term cash crunch. While community members may be justified in wanting new ice pads, they should perhaps be looking at an altcmative to public; fund% to cover the substantial cost of new arenas. The News Advertiser encourages community members who am affected by the problem to organize fund-raising events and reach into their own pockets to contribute to the cause. The private sector might also be asked to help finance such a worthy purpose. In any ease, it is unreasonable today to expect taxpayers, especially those whose faunilies don't use rinks, to fork over the all tlx: funds for ice p ells when cher more crucial oma % of the public ecorxxny arealso suffering. Now let us talk about cats. Everything in the article does apply to cats, with one exception, we are talking private property! Cats no longer always resort to nature. They do not dig a hole, therefore their droppings are on top of the grass and flower beds, so much so that workmen refuse to work over the flower beds used as cat litter. People who cut our grass remark on the sickening odors on our lawns. Every morning I pick up three to seven droppings on my yard alone. I am not against animals. I am simply asking that a bylaw be passed From the editor-in- chief s desk for owners to keep them on their own property. I do not own an animal, but there is no end to cleaning up after them. On two separate occasions I have contacted my Ward 2 councillor. To date, there has been no action on behalf of the Town. Cats can be kept on a leash. Your editorial states "dogs running at large cannot be tolerated in our community". Why are oats? 1 am asking that something be done about this very unhealthy condition. Elva Brennan, Ajax Goodbye to summer Is summer drawing to a close? Darn right it is. I've seen the signs pointing the way to fall. BACK TO SCHOOL SALES. I've already spent a small fortune on back -to -school outfits, hunted for the mandatory Power Rangers backpack and purchased enough pencil crayons to color an entire atlas. School is just three weeks away, much to the chagrin of the small fry but to the relief of many a parent. CORN ON THE COB. I love corn on the cob, all that drippy butter and too much salt. But if there's corn at the farmer's market, can pumpkins, gourds and squash be far behind? CANNING. That's right. In an unexpected fit of domesticity I trundled out to Pingle's Farm and loaded up on cucumbers, green tomatoes, onions and the industrial jug of vinegar. Having what I believed to be the basic necessities for canning dill pickles and hot dog relish I raced home for'my mother's recipe, longing for the acrid smell of salt brine and the sweet scent of vegetables boiling on the stove. Funny thing ... it looked a lot easier when mom did it. Forgot the dill, had to mooch it off my father-in- law; forgot the garlic, another trip to the store-, a run on canning jars at the supermarket left me in a real mess. Gallons of relish, no jars. I've got a little tip for You. If you can't find what you're looking for, chances are the local hardware store has it. They keep the darndest things there. Anyway, short story made long I got the job done but it smells of fall. MUNICIPAL ELECTION CALL. Yeah, yeah, yeah. The sudden reappearance of your local Politician is no coincidence, my friends. There's politics in the air and the date has been set for Nov. 14. It just isn't fall without an election (I really used to like autumn, but that was before I could vote). TRAVEL BROCHURES. You know the dog days of summer are here when you just can't walk past a travel agency without grabbing a fistful of brochures for the sunny south. Cuba, Venezuela, Jamaica, Antigua — they all start to look the same after a few pages. Beam me up Scotty and set me down somewhere tropical about the time the last leaf hits the ground. Glad the warm weather's over are you? Well, just remember this come December, you don't have to shovel hot. .TW,, - 77. Couple make By SAL BOMMARITO STAFF REPORTER PICKERING - Every winter, Terry and Nova Catterall leave the bitter cold of the Canadian winter behind for the warm sunshine of Florida and the Bahamas. But unlike thousands of Snowbirds from Canada who migrate south every winter, the Catteralls cruise down south through the intercoastal waterway aboard their 34 -foot trawler, Terra Nova. The trip took about five weeks in all to complete. But after spending the winter down south, the Catteralls were ready to make the return trip to East Shore Marina in Pickering, where the Terra Nova is docked for the summer. Every spring the Catteralls; make the return trip to Pickering where they spend the summer months aboard their boat, which they consider their home away from home. "It got too hot and with the exchange rate it's much cheaper here," explains Terry. - For Terry, a 59 -year-old carpenter, the boat has provided him the unique opportunity to combine his love for boats with his carpentry skills. "I've been into boats for a long time. I used to be a boat builder," he notes. _ The Terra Nova is made of glistening teak wood, which Terry has stripped and refinished. Tony and Nova Catterall and their cat Tom live aboard their 34400t trawler Tena Nova docked in Pickering during the summer months. But when the cold wktter a *roaches. tf" cruise down south to Florida and the Bahamas. phot by Andrew Wanowski For Nova, life on the boat means meeting new and interesting people. "You meet a lot of nice people and everyone's friendly. Boaters wally rely on one another," she says. Their cat Tom has even grown accustomed to life aboard the boat. He has gone on a number of voyages down south along with his owners. "We got him in 1988," says Nova, while Tom catches a cat nap in the boat's forward cabin. "He's been on a boat most of his life. He got nervous on the way down south during some rough cruising." The Catteralls have made the trip down south aboard their boat, which Terry says "has all the comforts of home," every winter for the last 10 years. Among the Terra Nova's amenities are a color television, air conditioning, telephone, THE NE:rf AHVZRMXK $tNMW AUGK ;r =1,1!!1 -PAGE 7 . A microwave, stove and hot and cold running water. The boat's safety features include radar, which Terry says helps navigate through fog, and an on- board computer which tracks their exact position. Itcan also carry 300 gallons of diesel — enough fuel for a 1,000 -mile voyage — and 150 gallons of drinking water. But living aboard a boat isn't for everyone. Harry Gazensky of Scarborough says living aboard his 27 -foot fishing boat would take the fun out of boating, which he considers a hobby. "It's not like getting away from it all anymore if you live on board. I like it as a form of leisure but not as a home. I don't know how people do it. I like being at home with all the comforts." After several years of living aboard their boat, the Catteralls are thinking of spending more time on shore. They recently purchased a small cottage in Pickering where they plan to spend a few months out of the year. "You get tired of (living on board) after a while," Terry says. Although he was told of his accomplishment at a gala held in conjunction with the festival in Oshawa, festival organizers delayed the presentation in order to create an award which would properly recognize the youth's advanced piano -playing skills. Clifford also received a $350 scholarship for winning the competition. Clifford began playing the piano at age six. Since that time, he has completed 10 grades of achievement and is preparing for his Associateship of Royal Conservatory of Toronto (ARC-) certification. "I have a passion for it. I find with playing the piano you get out of it as much as you put into it. It's a very individual thing. Your motivation and discipline come from inside," says Clifford. His greatest satisfaction is derived from using his talent to benefit the community. For example, Clifford has played at St. Bernadette's Church, Ajax Civic Awards and Whitby Psychiatric Hospital. He also derives great satisfaction from teaching students both young and old how to play the piano. "To see a student accomplish something is the biggest kick for me," be says. As well, Clifford and a friend started a small business, playing music for weddings. He also performs in the school band. +Cops couldn't rgive `driver breathalyser FROM PAGE 1 canine unit the driver was arrested around 6:15 p.m. :...Police were unable to administer a breathalyser test as the suspect was vomiting. at the time be was .:;apprehended, says Const. <Vluldoon. I like this story because it made my laugh out loud. l learned alot of new words such as Snozzcumbers, Frobscottle, Whizzpoppers and Whiffowiddle. The story is about a giant (the BF.G.) who are mean and eat human beans. The B.F.G. is friendly and blows good dreams into sleeping children's rooms. One night when he was blowing dreams, he saw Sophie and he took her. They became friends. Sophie and the giant try to find a way to get rid of the mean giants. Her mother gave her her nickname, Booky, and pronounced it "B00000ky"! The first book takes place in the heart of the Depression, a time when nearly everyone was poor. In that book, tons of cool stuff happens to her. In the third book, my favorite, called "As Every Booky" Bea really has grown up. She meets Lucy Maud Montgomery. At the end of the third book, in the epilogue, she got married to a person she had known since high school, named Lorne Huntley. She also had two little girls. I strongly recommend the Booky series, because it is interesting and very mol. -- by Sarah Lebel, age 10 BASEBALL ANNUAL GENERAL, MEETING TO BE HELD THURSDAY, AUGUST 25, 1994 AT 7:30 P.M. Now, 25 years later, the second Woodstock festival is history and members of the graduating class are planning a reunion on Oct. 15 at the Whitby Curling Club. "With all the hype of the 25 - year Woodstock reunion we expect a good response," says reunion organizer Pat Klasen- Gostlin. Ms. Klasen-Gostlin is hoping the 25 -year reunion is as successful as the class's 10 - year reunion held back in 1979. To date, she's managed to contact 40 of the 63 people who graduated in two classes. Ms. Klasen-Gostlin says teachers of the two classes and friends of the graduates are also welcome to attend the reunion. "We hope people we've lost track of, or someone who knows them, will get in touch with us," she says. Ms Klasen-Gostlin can be reached in Whitby at 666-8890. -+ ... - + w .rte.. w a ♦ . i 1 w .. "It's also a place for pampering." Plumbing Mart is also more than just a plumbing store. It's a Plumbing Boutique. With stores at 1261 Kennedy Rd. in Scarborough, 1099 Kingston Rd. in Pickering and at 843 King St W. in Oshawa, their boutiques feature a complete line of high quality fixtures in the latest styles and colours. "We cater to the homeowner who wants to do anything from a complete renovation to simply replacing their taps," says Desmond. "We're also here to answer all of their questions and advise them on the best way to complete their project - Of course Plumbing Mart also provides a complete installation service by professionally trained staff who will work closely with you so the finished project is done to your satisfaction. With names like Kohler, Moen, Delta and American Standard you know that t0-• you'll always get the best. OFF Each of the three showrooms is well stocked with numerous displays but Desmond admits you just can't show everything. So customers are invited to browse through the many catalogues available and choose among hundreds of additional products to suit your particular needs. When it comes to price, Plumbing Mart does everything to save their customers money and won't be knowingly undersold. So if you we an identical item cheaper somewhere else bring in the ad and they'll match the price. Along with brothers John and Martin, Desmond runs a family business that understands a family's needs when it comes to the bathroom. "We're sensitive to their needs," says Desmond. "We treat their bathroom like it's our own."
