AJAX - It could have been
every parents worst nightmare.
While their story had a happy

happen to anyone else — with
more serious consequences.
Some quick thinking by Mr.

Mrs. Poeta dubs her husband
a hero for diving into the mirky,

the mishap.
"He's my hero," she says. "It

"By the time I looked down,
he was a couple of feet deep in
water. All I saw was his big, blue
eyes looking up at me. They
were wide open. I didn't think, I
just jumped. He was a couple of
feet down and he was sinking."
The couple want to stress that
young children should never be
allowed near waterways or pools
without wearing a lifejacket.
"Just take that second and put
the lifejacket on," says Mrs.
Poeta. "It's just not worth it to
not have it on."
Being avid cottagers, they
consistently ensured Tyler and
their other two children
Matthew, 6, and Danielle, 5.

his father who took Matthew

In the meantime, Mrs. Poeta

"I turned around and saw his

He must have tripped," says Mr.

he was in total shock. It took him
about an hour to get back to his
old self. When we got back to
the cottage, he stayed in his

• Alcohol is a major contributing factor in 40 per cent of drownings:
I lalf of all drowning deaths for men aged 18 to 34 are alcohol related.
• Swimming ability isn't enough. Two-thirds of victims could swim,

- Showing off and taking risks near water is dangerous. In 1992, 57

His father, Don, who brings

says Marc is constantly perusing
magic stores hoping to find more
tricks he can add to his act.
Marc says he has about 40
tricks perfected and, at the mall,
he is performing about 25 of
them. Some tricks are easy to
learn, while others can take a
long time. He likes to show off
the new ones to his friends.
"Whenever I get a new trick I
call my friends over and show
them," he says. And he won't
tell an audience or even a friend
how the tricks are done. That
would spoil the fun. If they
figure it out he'll admit it, but
will swear them to secrecy.
Marc works at a local pizza
restaurant on Tuesday nights

The mall is host to a wide

Marketing manager Barb

In addition to Marc, there are

The program runs until the end

Lead removal services should be in for a boom
That is, for people who have lead in their foot, their gas -
pedal foot, of course.
Monday morning, photo radar will be a reality. And, for
those who tend to drive a wee bit fast, the device could
prove to be a large thom in their side, not to mention cause
a large hole in the wallet.
After months of talk, speculation and avoidance on
behalf of politicians about its real intent, the 'big -brother
with -a -Tense' will hit the roads. Yes sir, ladies and
gentlemen, fix your hair and brush your teeth. Monday
morning at 6 a.m. the film will be loaded and the cameras
set.
The device has caused much talk at supper tables, water
coolers at work and over telephone lines across the
country.
The little camera that could' is seen by most as a cash
cow for Queen's Park, an invasion of privacy and just one
more way the government has control over its citizens.
Photo radar has been responsible for would-be
entrepreneurs inventing devices they claim will prohibit
the camera from taking a clear photograph of licence
plates. It won't be long before motorists get double
whammied with fines -- one for speeding, one for
attempting not to get caught speeding.
Let's face it — rarely does one get pulled over on the
highway for doing up to 120 km/h. Rumor has it, photo
radars will be set to snap vehicles exceeding that speed.
No matter what the government's reason for setting up
the system, money or safety, you as a motorist can't lose.
If successful, the system will discourage people from
driving at excessive speeds.
And there is no good argument against that.

♦TOURISM
Improvements can bring
To the editor,
Your "Tapping Into The Tourist Trade" brought the following to my
mind, a mind shaped by visiting and actually living and working with
local people in various countries and their aim to make tourist dollars.
In Ajax, we're proud to spend our later years here, so many positive
aspects! There is, however, the other side that visitors cannot help
noticing: like vehicles parked on sidewalks without reason, forcing us to
walk on a busy street; like so many shrubs and trees which scratch, poke
and crowd pedestrians into walking single file, and form them to duck to

even more tourists to town
Touris,s never spend money in places that bother them; make them like
our town, feel wanted and they'll give us a growing, profitable existence.
Stores and shops seem to spring up everywhere. What our town really
needs now to attract tourists is more attractions. Our downtown is where
it belongs but vast improvements are needed now!
How about winter: With all the open spaces and that jewel of a
waterfront, Ajax is a lovely place to be, but there are many sidewalks
never cleared of snow, etc., making a mockery of our "Town that Works"!
Simple answer: Have town employees take care of all the above
problems and charge it to the offending property owners — as they are
asking for it. Makes our good town a great town, a tourist -attracting town!
Also, how about being equally efficient in silencing those boom boxes
and the increasing number of poorly -muffled motor vehicles?

Gas prices a slick trick
I make people nervous wben I drive and when I get
Thursday, anyone accompanying me on my journey
would have gotten a dose of both.
First, let's deal with the driving.
I am a great driver. In fact, there are only three
people rve ever met or known that I think could do a
better job. However, rm the type of person who drives
strith the gas task on its lau drops. This tends to make
people squirm.
Quite often, I notice my passenger looking out of
the corner of his or her eye at the bright yellow GAS
" 1ligbt that whines when I'm getting to the bottom of the
took.
I watch their body language as they anticipate
every gas station that I approach will be the one that I
-stop at. To be quite honest, I've become accustomed to
that bright yellow GAS light, and it doesn't serve as a
warning to me anymore. Actually, it's on more than
it's off. You could say I've pushed my luck many,
ll in
times. To date, my luck has never run out.
QThursday, I was doing business in Pickering. I was
Q having a good day ... thinking about weekend plans,
v ,attempting to sing in tune to the song on the radio, and
debating just how much further I could drive without
yr. ;' M;'r.'';'F.i'`"`,Vi?:.'1!',`"'• - -., r'..,j,,/Fjafi i n
having to stop for gas.
It was 3:45p.m. I pulled into a Pickering gas
statioo, only to find four cars lined up at each pump.
Humbug, I thought. I haven't got the time. The price, I
toted. was 50 cents a litre.
Away I went on Hwy. 401 back to Ajax. A few
errands later and I decided the choking noise at my
peed
.L reflected a serious need for p.
I pulled into the nearest gas station. The pace of
gas -- 58 cents a litre. My initial thougk was either
Pickering gas stations were producing their own oil or
Ajax was at war with the Middle Fast. `
The attendant came to the window. I questioned his
gas prices and be smiled. "It's the weekend." be
gleamed. Upon further questioning, be revealed,to me
gas prices watt up every Thursday at 4 p.m.
Aaaaaaargh. I'm confident I've beard oil company
executives swear on their bank books that oil prices
only rise as a result of what happens on the crude dl
market. I've been bad!!
I've already made a 1995 New Year's Resolution.
And, it's going to start this Monday.
When it comes to putting gas in the car, no more
Procrastination. When the light comes on, the gas goes
in. Unless of course, it's Thursday at 4 p.m.

Pickering hurdler set to soar at biggest meet of career
By AL RIVETT
SPORTS REPORTER
PICKERING - It's been a
precocious summer of international
track competition for a Pickering
athlete.
After competing at the World
Junior Track and Field
Championships and the Canadian
Senior Track and Field
Championships/Commonwealth
Games Trials, Dion Trowers, at the
tender age of 18. qualified as one of
the youngest hurdlers ever to run
for Canada at the Commonwealth
Games in Victoria, B.C., Aug. 18 to
28.
"It's great to have to opportunity
to represent Canada at the
Commonwealth Games," says the
soft-spoken athlete, who's enjoying
a successful year in the 110 -metre
hurdles in his first year of
international competition. "I just
want to run a good race and try to
run a personal best. Whatever
happens after that is a bonus for me.
Making the team itself was a big
deal for me. I didn't think I could
do it."
At the World Junior Track and
Field Championships in Lisbon.
Portugal, last month. Trowers
placed 15th in his first-ever
interrmional competition. He ran a
personal best in a time of 14.28
seconds to finish second in his beat.
beating an American who went on
to place third in the final. However,
the semi-final beat proved
disastrous for Trowers. In the first
semi-final race, training partner and
friend Adrian Woodley of Whitby
fell, which had a devastating effect
on Trowers' performance in his

AJAX-PICKERING - Pickering
High School has a reputation in
track and field which few other
schools in Canada can rival.
The school, which has pumped
out a steady stream of provincial
champions, is also fast becoming a
training ground for athletes sought
by U.S. colleges.
In the past several years, five
Pickering High School track
athletes have received full
scholarships to top American
tutoivesrsities.
The list is as follows:
O Jason Robinson, a hurdler and
long jumper, received a full
scholarship to Stanford University
in California.
D Kyle Robinson, a hurdler,
received a full scholarship to
Clemson University in South
Carolina,
'f] Sam Davis, a long jump and
triple jump specialist, signed for a
scholarship to George Mason
University in Virginia.
O Jason McKenzie, a triple and
long jumper, received a full
scholarship to the University of
Western Michigan in Kalamazoo.
U Dion Trowers is beaded to the
University of Iowa on a full track
and field scholarship. He's a
specialist in the I10 -metre hurdles.

race
"It really broke my
concentration; my concentration
was gone at that point." says
Trowers. -It was just a bad rare and
a bad experience, but I was happy
to be able to finish 15th in the
world.'
He returned from the world meet
early in order to take part in the
Commonwealth Games Trials in
Victoria. Trowers placed fust in his
heat, which boosted his confidence.
In the final, Trowers placed second,
just ahead of Woodley in third.
Trowers also garnered a silver
medal at the Canadian Junior Track
and Field Championships in Ottawa
last month. In his heat, he tied
Woodley's Canadian record for the
I l0 -metre hurdles in a time of
14.09 seconds. However, Woodley
then broke the record in the final,
with Trowers close behind in
second spot.
After runnlm: for Canada at the
Commonwealth (!,oncs. Trowers
will travel to the university of Iowa
in Iowa City to begin a full track
and field scholarship with the
Hawkeyes' track team.
Trowers, the valedictorian of his
graduating class at Pickering High
School this year, says the decision
was a difficult one before finalizing
his plans late last month to go to the
University of Iowa. He received
letters from numerous U.S.
universities, but narrowed the field
down to four — Michigan State,
Northern Arizona, University of
Syracuse and Iowa — before
settling on the offer from the
midwestern U.S. college.
The coach. Pat McPhee, is a
young hurdler himself. My coaches
here thought I would get the best
coaching there (at Iowa). They
(Iowa track coaches) are confident I
will he successful in this conference
(the Bic 10) and 1 could walk away
with the 1 I0 -metre hurdles title."
Another factor that weighed in
his decision was that fellow
Pickering hurdler Dion Trowers will represent Canada at the
Cortrrttxt malth Games in Ytctoria B.C., starting Aug. 18. Following
the Games, he'll be off to the University of knva on a full track
scholarship. photo by Ron PWjoniro

YOUR HOME IMPROVEMENT SPECIALISTS
THIS WEEK FEATURING:
"Z ART GALLERY"
If you appreciate the atmosphere
that beautiful art creates in your home or
are interested in collecting the finest in
limited edition prints, then you should
visit Z ART GALLERY in Pickering.
Located at 1900 Dixie Rd. at Finch
Avenue in the Loeb Glendale Plaza,
owner Mike Jaensch invites you to see
his store which is now in its fifth year.
He first started out as a collector
who decorated his homes with limited
edition prints.
Eventually he saw the advantage of
starting his own business and has been
very successful with many customers
coming back again and again after
discovering the enjoyment of a beautiful
work of art.
"We have prints by such people as
Robert Bateman, Trisha Romance, A.J.
Casson and John Seery -Lester," says
Mike. "Our store appeals to many tastes
whether it's an appreciation for wildlife
or Victorian architecture as well as
family portrayals and sport scenes."
Most limited editions have 1000
reproductions per origirmi-and eac?i is
signed and numbered by the artist.
They can range in price from $75
and up depending on the artist and his or
her popularity at a particular time.
"This style of art is affordable and of
the highest quality," says Mike. "People
buy them to enhance the decor of their
home while some acquire them for their
investment potential."
Z ART GALLERY is also known for
its expert framing service.
Mike will help you choose from
hundreds of frames as well as the
backing and the matting which are both
acid free to prevent discoloring of your
print.
Another unique service is the
framing of memorabilia like old photos,
mementos and pieces of clothing.
"We'll frame anything," he says.
"Why have special keepsakes hidden
away so no one can appreciate them."
Soon Z ART GALLERY will be
hosting exhibitions by a variety of artists
who will be on hand to sign their work.
So visit Z ART for the best in
limited editions or call (905) 837-0144.
