Sandy Ryrie.
"It's a cycle. Crime is totally
unpredictable. Statistics over a short
period of time don't really give an
accurate picture of what's going on.
We don't want to scare the public,"
he says.
At the same time, police are
asking the public to be more vigilant
when locking their homes,
businesses and vehicles. The public
should also be reporting any
suspicious occurrences by calling

"We need the assistance of
everyone," says Insp. John
Hamilton, adding people should dial
911 when they spot suspicious
individuals near their home or
vehicle.
Police are advising people to
always lock their windows and
doors, as well as their garage doors,
at home. As well, people should
never leave their keys in their
vehicles and should always lock
their car doors when leaving their
vehicle.
Under no circumstances should
people ever leave a spare key inside
their car.
"People sometimes make it too
easy for break-ins or thefts to occur,"
Insp. Hamilton says.
Homeowners have lost items

televisions, VCRs and appliances
such as microwaves.

WHEN SHOULD 1 BUY?
Historically, young people generally have waited until
they're married and have established a lifestyle before
deciding on a home of their own. That pattern is now
starting to change.
The younger set are now starting to invest in homes far
sooner than we ever did or could. 1 believe this is the result of more disposable
income at an earlier age plus the greater flexibility at the different lending
institutions.
Personally - the sooner you get into your first home - whether alone or in
partnership with a friend - the better it will be. Home ownership is a good
learning experience as well as an excellent investment.
And - there are opportunities out there right now waiting for ambitious kids
to grab and develop. I've also saved the best for the last. It's fun. So give me a
call - I'll tell you all about it.

A needed boost
for education
Durham schools have just received a shot in the
arm from the Province. And it's going to pump up an
area that particularly needs it — technological
education.
Durham public and separate schools will share
5514,200 for technological education. And that's part
of the $60 million going to 600 secondary schools in
the Province through the Technological Education
Program and Renewal Fund, a five-year program.
The money will go to developing new curriculum
in broad-based technologies and to purchasing new
computers and other equipment. The new programs
implemented would be related to communications,
construction, technical design, hospitality services,
manufacturing and transportation.
While cutbacks in education have been severe
(and, some say, shortsighted and irreparable), the one
thing that should not he neglected is the area of
technological studies. Educating our youth in newer
technologies is an absolute necessity if Ontario —
and Canada — is to keep from falling far behind on
the information highway and various other
technological thoroughfares.
There are already indications that Canada has
some catching up to do as other countries around the
world have taken the initiative and made great leaps
forward in technological innovation.
The S60 million boost in this area will go far
toward narrowing that gap.

Hockey player has a big heart
To the editor,
My 11 year old son Mike is a
devout hockey fan and plays
goalie on the local street hockey
team. You can therefore imagine
my surprise when, last
Wednesday, I arrived at the local
park day camp to pick him up
and saw Glenn Healy and the
Stanley Cup surrounded by fans.
Alas, Mike was not among them.
They were in another area of the
park and did not know what all
the fuss was about. When I
finally located him and told him
what was happening we were
just in time to see Glenn's limo
exiting the park. Mike was
devastated.
On the way home we were
passing a local plaza when Mike
shouted, "Dad, there's the limo."
When we approached, Glenn
was sitting in the back and said,
"come on in and have a look."
Mike climbed in, touched the
cup with great reverence and
was just about to burst with joy.
Glenn spent five minutes talking
with him and then it was off to
the next stop.
For the past two years we
have attended the pre -season
pick up hockey games for the
NHLers who live in the Toronto
area. We have had occasion to
meet man}, of the players from
several teams as Mike loves to
collect autographs. Most comply
with the autograph requests but
there are a few who really go out
of their way to talk to the kids
and project a positive image.
Glenn Healy is without a doubt
one of the really good guys.
Think about it, he gets to have
the Stanley Cup for only one day
and what does he do? He goes
out into his community to show
it to as many local people as he
can to people like my son, who
will always remember the day he
sat in a limo with the reigning
Stanley Cup champion goalie .
and hugged the cup!
Thanks Glenn, your team may
be in New York but we know
where your home is.

The Claremont Lions Rodeo rode through town last 1
weekend, bringing crowds of people out to enjoy the event
as part of the Spirit of the West Weekend. According to
organizers, about 3,000 took in the rodeo on the first day,
Saturday, with a similar number coming out for the final
day on Sunday. "The stands were full; it was just
wonderful," says Nancy Nicholson of the Ontario Rodeo
Association. The rodeo attracted more than 110 cowboys
and cowgirls from across Ontario and New York state. The
Claremont weekend was part of the 15 -date Ontario rodeo
circuit which ends at the Orono Fair Sept. 24 -25.

My beef is sexist males.
I'm replying to Eric Daniel's
comments in the July 29
What's Your Beef. The fol-
lowing definition of sexist is
found in the dictionary: 1)
•
discrimination based on sex,
esp. discrimination against
women; 2) attitudes or condi-
tions that promote stereotyp-
ing of social roles based on
gender. I assume that since
Eric can write, he can also
read, which means he knows
the meaning of the word sex-
ist. He claims that he is not
sexist, but his beef is that
girls should not be allowed in
sports. I am a girl who enjoys
playing all kinds of sports -
basketball,
baseball, hock-
ey and soccer.
The boys in my
neighborhood are I)
always asking me i
to play on their
teams because I'm
a good athlete. I
think his problem is that he is
afraid that a girl will beat him
at his own game and if he
cannot cope with that, then I
feel sorry for him. He also
suggests that girls should stay

played havoc with our Infosource computer. Because,
at times, the system wasn't operational, results for the
Optnline question may be affected. Therefore, we are
once again asking the same question.
SETTING THE SCENE:

and often dangerous job of driver
examiner. The position is also
extremely important for ensuring
public safety on the roads and dur-

THE QUESTION: Did you pass
your very first driver's test?
To answer this question, call
683-7040. To record a YES
answer, press 8026. To record
a NO answer, press 8027.
You're welcome to leave a
short message after you vote.
