Healy, a goaltender with the National Hockey League Stanley Cup champion New York Rangers, made the most of his chance to host the Cup at his Pickering Village home last week, taking the emblem of hockey supremacy on a whirlwind tour, via black limousine, to numerous places around the Towns. Along the way, many people were able to get up close and personal with the Cup. The tradition of each member of the Stanley Cup -winning team getting the Cup dates back only a few years. However, Healy says it's a great opportunity to share his good fortune with the community. The big thing was getting to ♦ REGION bring the Cup back to Pickering to share it with the people who helped me to get to where I am, says Healy in his Ajax backyard, which hosted a steady stream of curious neighbors who turned out to see, touch and get their picture taken with the Cup. "I wanted to bring it back here and let them enjoy it, and they've fully enjoyed it. Everywhere we've went we caused a commotion." Healy picked up the Cup in New York City last Saturday. While there, he took the 102 - year -old mug up in a helicopter which flew over Manhattan, and it rode with him in a golf cart while playing a round in the Big Apple. It also occupied a seat beside him on a flight back to Toronto Monday. On Tuesday, Healy took the Cup to Ajax and Pickering General Hospital to visit with his father who is recovering there. "He really liked it. He thought it was the best thing," says Healy. Welfare benefits are generally given to families and singles who aren't disabled.) The number of people across Ontario on social assistance is also dropping. In July, there were more than 10,200 fewer cases and it's the fourth straight month the number has dropped. However, there are still more than 1.3 million Ontanans receiving social assistance. The decrease, provincial community and social services minister Tony Silipo says, is "a strong and very positive sign that Ontario is slowly coming out of the recession." While the provincial numbers are down, there were still mom Ontarians receiving help ` this July than in the past three years. In July 1993, there were 1.2 million on social assistance and in July 1991, at the depths of the recession, there were 970,518 people receiving aid. Of the 345,300 welfare cases in Ontario, t almost 230,000 are receiving aid because of unemployment. Gabrielle hearing delayed AJAX - A disciplinary hearing for Dr. Denis Gabrielle has been adjourned to Monday, Oct. 3. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario is conducting the hearing into allegations of sexual misconduct, incompetence and dishonorable conduct. Dr. Gabrielle, who has a family practice and also serves as coroner for the area, has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Seven complainants have accused the doctor of misconduct. The hearing began Tuesday, Aug. 2, and was scheduled to end on Friday. Previously scheduled disciplinary hearings for other doctors either accused of misconduct or seeking reinstatement are on the college's dockets. Dr. Gabrielle's certificate of registration — once called a medical licence — was suspended in May pending the outcome of the hearing. Also, some of Dr. Gabrielle's patients have set up a fund to help defray some of the doctor's legal bills. Donations can be made to the Dr. Denis Michael Gabrielle Legal Fund at any branch of the Toronto Dominion Bank. The donations are not tax deductible. 1 ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ HOLIDAY ■ ,GOLFE SPECIAL: ■ Thunderbird Golf ■ Club invites you to play ■ "The Bird" - one of Durham's ■ finest and oldest golf clubs ■ and SAVE... ■ ■ ■ ■ an , g . r f.fees!. For the fourth straight month, the number of people living off the public purse has dropped. To whomever is to thank, we're impressed. Perhaps we should be tipping our hat to the actual recipients who were out pounding the pavement. Their hard worked paid off and they got a job. Maybe congrats should go to others who tipped off officials about people collecting welfare fraudulently. How about a round of applause to the provincial and federal governments for their back -to -work programs? Could these be the lifesaver of the decade? Is this what's making our welfare numbers drop? Forget what the Bay St. experts say, ignore the f-inancial advisors. It doesn't take any type of genius to determine that when welfare numbers are dropping, people are going back to work. And, when people are going back to work, our economy is starting to take regular breaths once again, and maybe the life-support systems can be put away for now. We're excited about the change. We ware to believe that during our crawl out of the recession we won't slip and fall back. If government back -to -work programs are successful we've got the recession licked. If, after pouring out millions of dollars in training programs and millions more in infrastructure money the well runs dry and the employed go back on social assistance well have learned our lessors on false hope. It's a lesson we'd rather skip. SLWMY, AUG= 7, 19% ax man takes part intree-mendous rideAil* By KEITH GILLIGAN STAFF REPORTER AJAX - The Tour des Trees rolls out today and a Carnelly Cres. man is going along for the ride. Gordon Hunter, 36, is taking part in the bicycle ride, which is being held to increase awareness of what arborists do and to raise money for tree research. The 600 -mile ride starts Aug. 7, in Stowe, Vermont, and concludes Sunday, Aug. 14, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) is staging the ride. "It's to raise awareness to people of arborists and what we do with trees," he says. Among duties of an arborist are studying growth habits of trees, construction dangers and pests and how they affect trees. Mr. Hunter, an arborist with Scarborough Hydro, is one of 28 riders from Canada and the United States, and he's the only one from Ontario. To take part in the ride, each cyclist was responsible for raising S3,000 through donations. Mr. Hunter raised S3.300 "just from people giving little pledges, which is great." All money goes to the ISA for its work. Corporate sponsor Davey Tree is covering the cost of hotels and meals during the ride. Taking part "won't cost me anything out of my pocket", Mr. Hunter says. His bosses at Scarborough Hydro were looking for volunteers to participate in the ride. "so I took it." While Mr. Hunter says, "1 don't classify myself as a cyclist", he has ridden "quite a bit in the past, but I've never done this in the past." What he has done is cycle the 27 kilometres each way to and from work. To prepare for the ride, he's been cycling, playing squash and soccer, swimming and doing some weight lifting. The cyclists will cover between 64 miles (103 km) and 163 miles (262 km) a day and cross three sets of mountains — the White, Blue and Green ranges. They'll ride through Vermont, New Hampshire and :Maine, cross the Bay of Fundy, then ride through Yarmouth and up into Halifax. A three-day ISA conference begins when the riders reach Halifax. Support vans will drive along with the cyclists, carrying provisions and extra bike parts. Mr. Hunter's wife Jennifer and sons Rory and Keith will meet him in Halifax. Gordon Hunter will embark on a 600 -mile ride to raise awareness of what arborists do. Region department move upsets downtown Oshawa merchants By Chris Bode 1'St-w tA.H STAFF DURHAM - Downtown Osha%%a merchants can only bid "bon voyage" as the Region moves its social services department Aug. 12. Durham Region council's highly - debated decision to move the department out of Oshawa's downtown core is going ahead as per. Currently located at the Bond Towers, 44 Bond St W., the offices will be moved to the Thornton Centre, corner of Hwy. 2 and 7borrton Rd Oshawa Mayor Nancy Diamond and Downtown Oshawa Board of Management (DOBM) president Kevin Campbell had discussed the move with Regional chairman Gary Herrema, who claimed that the lease had already been signed in December,1993. Mr. Campbell claims that 10 downtown businesses will dose and as many as 70 full-time jobs will be eliminated once the 200 or more employees move to the new facility. Part of the Region's decision to move the office was an estimated financial savings of up too $750,000, mostly achieved through free perking at the new site. While the annual rent at the Thornton Centre is slightly more expansive, Bond Towers costs the Region an additional $147,000 per year for parirint8• Annual rent at the Thornton Centre is expected to be $512,580. Both the City of Oshawa and the Pc "town Qbawa Boar4 , 9( Management (DOBM) opposed the move. The downtown board went one step funthe r, hiring the law firm of Salmers, Strike and Furlong and petitioning the Province to stop the relocation. "We notified the Minister of Social Services and we sent in a petition to the Province," says DOBM's manager Brenda Snowden. "The response we received suggested we address the Region may" She adds the[ the fight against the Region cost appoximately W—W. The only option for the DOBM is to get another business operation in the downtown sector, says Ms. U. Snowden. The Region has signed a five-year lease at the Thornton Centre. Although there is an option to break the deal after three years the Region would have to pay the unamorturd portion of the lease cost Everything has gone a000r+ding to per. says Harry Ranunler, manager of facilities for the Region. "We had allocated $135,000 for the Region's relocation expenses," says Mr. Rammler. "We'll probably come ung that figure by a couple of thous <td (doflm) " The DOBM had previously argued the move would cost the Regko $250,000. WELCOME BACK! P ♦TRAMPOLINE Pickering athlete captures multiple medals at national championships PICKERING - A Pickering athlete garnered lots of precious metals at the recent national championships for trampoline and tumbling in Vancouver, B.C. recently. Ben Snape, 16, of Pickering took part in both the Canadian Trampoline and Tumbling National Age Group Qualifier and the Canadian National Trampoline and Tumbling Championships. In all, he captured five medals at the two national events which ran at the same venue. At the World Age Group meet, a qualifier for the World Age Group Championship in Portugal in October, Snape placed second in the 15-17 age group and earned a spot on the Canadian team going to worlds. He was also second in the double -mini trampoline event at the age group qualifier. At the national championships, Snape was fourth in the individual senior men's event. In the synchronized senior men's competition, Snape a n d partner Mathieu Turgeon of Toronto won the bronze medal. Snape a I s o competed in the junior Ben Snape in e n ' s double - mini trampoline event, earning a third-place finish. In the double -mini trampoline team competition, Snape helped his Ontario squad to a second - place result. Snape also garnered a fourth - place finish in the two -trick spectacular. Snape's fourth -place finish in the individual senior men's competition earned him the right to also compete at the World Trampoline Championships in Portugal. However, a petition by several injured athletes who weren't able to compete in Vancouver was successful, and Snape was bumped off the national team. However, Snape will still compete at the World Age Group Trampoline championships. With governments cutting back their financial aid to top- level athletes, Snape is in need of sponsorship to cover the S2,500 cost of competing at the world event in Portugal. As hockey fans are no doubt aware, New York Rangers head coach Mike Keenan recently left the Rangers to become head coach and general manager with the St. Louis Blues in what turned into a chaotic situation for the Rangers, Blues and the NHL. "I wish him all the luck in the world, just as long as he's in second place behind the Rangers. We want to win it (the Stanley Cup) again," nays Glenn Healy who had the Cup at his Pickering Village home last. week. Healy speculated that Keenan was unhappy with his sole role of head coach with the Rangers. When achieving the dual role of coach/GM with the Rangers was out of the question, he bolted to the Blues. "Mike wanted a situation with the Rangers that he wa.9' unable to attain Glenn Healy and he decided to move on to bigger and better things. The late cheque was a window of opportunity for him to get to St. Louis," says Healy. Healy stated in a July interview that his relationship with the fiery coach was good for the most part. However, he says most of the players. at various points in the season. were at loggerheads with Keenan. Kid -tested television: Degrassi Junior High '-teaches me things' Degrassi Junior High is a show for kids. It's on at 4 to 4:30 p.m. on Channel S (CBC) from Monday b Friday. It's about Grades 6 to 9. They talk about dating, sex, drinking, drugs, divorced parents, bullies, friendship, teen pregnancies, death, AIDS, homosexuality and much, much i more. What I like about the show is that it teaches me things I'm interested in. It covers a lot of stuff that is said in the school yard. There is cathing I don't like about the show. I recommend this show for ages 8 and over. — by Sonja O'Brien, age 9 A•' /0 .. OFF THIS N + .
