The Ajax celebration was the family's way of showing how proud they are of their 60 -year- old mother and grandmother Teresa Heenan, who got her drivels licence July 7. "My family had a big party for me (Sunday). They had a big cake. It was a real World Cup day. I'll never forget it," says an excited Mrs. Heenan, who has three children and four grandchildren. "She feels on top of the world right now," says her husband Tom. "I knew she could do it. When she decides to do something there's no stopping Ila.. Lightning felled tree branches, knocking out power lines on Liverpool Rd. south of Bayly St. around 11:50 a.m. About 2,000 residents in the East Shore area were without power for approximately 20 minutes, a Hydro spokesman says. About three minutes later, power lines were knocked out on Valley Farm Rd. near Finch Ave., leaving 1,500 area households without power for a half hour. No similar problems were reported in Ajax. According to Statistics Canada, judges in the country make a little more than $100,000 a year while university teachers average a bit above $60,000. Your MP earns a salary between those of a university teacher and a judge -- $64,400 a year, plus a $21,300 tax-free expense allowance. Your MP sits 31 weeks a year in Ottawa. The rest of the time, presumably, is spent in his or her constituency. A government -appointed commission has recently recommended MPs' salaries be increased. We must first question why at this time of threatened separation, a huge deficit, and cries for government cutbacks, particularly in senators' pay and MPs' pensions, anyone ever decided to look into hiking MPs' salaries. There are MPs out there who are busting their butts for their constituents. There is much more involved to being an MP than sitting in the House and voting on bills and arguing against the opposition. Every constituent who has a problem relating to the federal government, including issues such as Canada Pension, passports and immigration, relies on his or her MP for help. However, MPs took the job knowing about the work they'd be required to do, the challenges, the criticism and the pay. All levels of government are cutting back. The feds have frozen civil servants' salaries for at least another two years and cut back on programs throughout the country. To hike MPs salaries would be an insult to the average Canadian wage earner. And average Canadians have taken far too many blows already. L(ellarz WRIT1: TO TtiE hE.wS ADYEKIISER 130 COh1MERCIAL AVE., AJAx, LIS 21-15 OR FAX US AT 683-7363 VTAX REDUCTION Cut government waste, not our services To the editor, It is unfortunate for everyone that the federal Finance Minister's unofficial and now adamantly denied mini -budget wasn't enacted. Such a mini -budget is, possibly and probably, the only measure that could have salvaged this dangerous debt -ridden country. According to the leaked information, Paul Martin's mini- budget included. *A 40 -per cert cut in spending for the departments of Agriculture, Transport, Energy, and Industry-, *A 15 -per cent cut for all other departments and programs except for native affairs, the CBC, and seniors and veterans' pensions, *Total federal spending to drop by $15 billion for fiscal year, 1995-96. With the GST garnering revenues amounting to approximately S15 billion, does it not make sense to cut government spending by approximately the same amount? By so doing, the government would then be able to eliminate the GST completely. Mr. Martin, as outlined in his unofficial mini -budget above, has demonstrated how easily this government could accomplish this country -saving task. By removing and not replacing the GST and by cutting their spending the government would not only keep one of their "election promises", they would also eliminate the robust underground economy and, last but not least, they would automatically boost the economy by 7 per cent. Win! Win! Win' A victory, not only for the revenues. They are increasing our govenurtent, but more importantly, taxes or cutting our services. The for the taxpayers that feed the burning question on every government• taxpayer's lips is, "What about It is interesting to note that the cutting wasteful government old style politicians can only spending and lowering our taxes?" imagine two scenarios that they Mareee Stern, think will increase their tax Pkkeriag Don't confuse Amps with Legion To the editor, Public sttpporters of our CHAMP and Key Tag Programs ate confusing The War Amps with the Legion. Groen Pickering man Dome's 30 -millionth visitor PICKERING - A Pickering resident was celebrated last week as the 30 -millionth visitor to Toronto's SkyDome. John Fletcher, 42, of Memory Imine was on his way through the SkvDome turnstiles to a Blue Jays game Monday night when he was accosted by camera operators and reporters. "It was very much of a surprise," says Mr. Fletcher, who was with his 12 -year -oto son, Stewart, a News Advertiser carrier. "I didn't know what was going on. I noticed all these camera people standing there but I didn't think much of it." Mr. Fletcher hadn't even planned to be at the SkyDome that night. lie got the tickets from a friend who was going on holiday and couldn't use them himself. It was the first baseball game Mr. Fletcher had attended in a long time, since be just returned with his family in December from three years of living in New "Zealand. For being the 30 -millionth visitor, SkyDome presented Mr. Fletcher a Blue Jays jacket like the one manager Cito Cyton wears, an overnight stay at the Skyf ome Hotel and SkvBox tickets, a three- month membership at the Curzons SkvDome fitness club, a SkvDome sweatshirt and T -shin, and a Blue Jays baseball cap. The hat went to his son Stewart, who had wanted to buy one but forgot to take his money. Besides the prizes, all the attention Mr. Fletcher received brought an added bonus as well. "I've had lots of phone calls from people I haven't heard from in quite a while," he says. Many friends who didn't realize he was back in Canada have been contacting him, perhaps about sharing that skyBox. Building firm that lost job sues politician By KEITH GILLIGAN STAFF REPORTER DURHAM - A Stouffville construction company is suing Whitby regional councillor Marcel Brunelle for SI million, claiming malicious damage and slander. Pachino Construction general manager Fred Palma says the firm is "proceeding with the lawsuit against him for the way things unfolded for our firm and the Region of Durham." The councillor says, "I will be vindicated and found I was doing my job to the highest standards of the people who elected me." The legal action comes after Pachino lost out on a S1.5 - million Region contract to do road and sewer work in Brooklin. Pachino was the low bidder on the contract, but Mr. Brunelle questioned awarding the job to the company because of outstanding claims the firm had with the Region on a previous project. The Region's works department recommended the Brooklin contract go to Pachino, but on June 8, following a 30 - minute closed -door session, Durham council voted to award the contract to Novacor Construction of Queensville. It was the second lowest bidder, coming in $10,000 higher than Pachino. 00,0:f $2SPrs,,CamGT 5 3 Compare the price. may bec In May, the Durham Regional Police Fraud Squad began investigating the relationship between regional works department staff and contractors. The investigation was completed recently with police finding no wrongdoing. Mr. Brunelle says being served with legal papers was "traumatic. It's unfortunate that someone acting in the interests of his electors is being sued. I couldn't find $1 million if I worked 20 years." Pachino is seeking $750,000 for slander. $150,000 for damages related to losing the Brooklin contract and $100.000 in punitive damages.
