As well, DNA believes that, if there must be a task force, it should not be headed by Mr. Hare. "In our opinion it's a conflict of interest," says Mr. Martin. He says the head of a panel that advises Ontario Hydro, is appointed by Ontario Hydro, and is paid by Ontario Hydro, should not lead a committee to review the effectiveness of Ontario Hydro's emergency plans. The Toronto newspaper also reported — based on documents it has received — that there are fire safety problems at Ontario's nuclear generating facilities. As well, it reported two incidents at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station when workers may have been exposed to radiation. Iain Dewar, safety and emergency preparedness superintendent for the Pickering station, confirmed the incidents when asked about them by the News Advertiser. In one case, it was found that appropriate signs warning about radiation in a particular area had not been posted. In another, surface contamination was found in the station's administrative building. Mr. Dewar notes signs are -equired to be posted in any area here there's a radiation field greater than 2.5 millirems per hour. Sgt. major fraud unit an Wooton wrote, "This investigation is now complete, and I can advise you that this Service has found no evidence of criminality in the relationship between any Regional works employee and companies doing business with the works department:' On May 19, senior regional officials asked police to investigate the relationship between works department employees and companies that bid for regional contracts. Works committee chairman and Oshawa councillor John Aker says, "Everything is out and clear and we're pleased." I've found Mingles generally are looking for a home that will see a fair amount socializing. This means a wet bar, the mandatory fireplace, modem decorating and the odd Jacuzzi or hot tub. So, for those of you out there who hadn't considered this option, I'd think about it. It works! "We're talking about minute quantities of PCBs” from a former auto -wrecking yard in Pickering, says Allen Jones, district engineer for the ministrv's York/Durham office. Ile explains the amount of PCB in the soil is one part per million or less. Mr. Jones says the move is being made mainly to save the ministry approximately WSW per vear it"s been paying Ontario Hydro to store the soil at its maintenance facility at Brock and Montgomery Park Rds., just north of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station. The soil will be transported and stored in eight shipping containers, each about 20 feet long, eight feet wide and eight feet high. According ing to Mr. Jones, there's no danger of leaking because the containers are Sealed and the PCBs are bound up in the soil in any case. lie notes the public would be safe even in the unlikely event the soil spilled out on to the road during transport "There would be political embanwssment, but there wouldn't be any real em•irorimental damage " The storage site in Green River will be at the provincial Pickering investigates use of vehicles by Town staff By MARIANNE TAKACS STAFF RE"TFN PICKERItiG - A public complaint has resulted in a Town investigation into staff use of municipal vehicles for personal purposes. Ward 2 councillor Kip Van Kempen asked for a report on the matter June 6 after receiving the complaint. He says he was "tipped off by an irate resident** upset that Town employees could drive municipal vehicles home from work at night. Town manager Tim Sheffield says hes looked into the matter and found nothing inappropriate taking place among Town staff. " If somebody out there in the public sees something like that happening I'd like to know about it right away," he says. "lf something untoward is going on out there I would like to know and I would deal with it." Pickering has no formal, written policy on staff use of Town vehicles. But Mr. Sheffield says informal rules have been developed over the years and municipal vehicles are driven home only by employees who have to have them available for Town business. Last week, Mr. Van Kempen and the rest of council received a memo from Mr. Sheffield explaining the situation. The Town has six employees who are assigned Town vehicles which they may drive home on a regular basis: the fire chief, deputy fire chief, executive director of operations, director of parks and facilities, superintendent of parks and property and the operations supervisor. As well, whichever roads foreman is on call also takes a municipal vehicle home. "All these people are on call 24 hours a day, seven (Lays a week-" notes Mr. Sheffield. lie adds all the vehicles they use — some of them trucks — contain special equipment which the employee must have access to at all times. Other employees occasionally take Town vehicles home for work-related purposes, such as getting to an early meeting the next day, he points out. But no one else may take municipal vehicles home on a regular basis. EVERN-111ING L \DERTII: St 1! - Free Admisslon - Fre Including the r PIC1M G vatb,1111111I W Shop ttttvly 8 tun.. 5 pm. Watchdog groups, like Durham Nuclear Awareness, ccxuinue to refute Iiydro's claims. Contrary to popular opinion, there aren't two sides to every story. There are three -- what we're told by one party in an argument, what we hear from the other side, and the truth. In other words, when we're dealing with nuclear power, the truth can likely be found somewhere between 'the facts' provided to use by the nuclear industry and 'the facts' as stated by nuclear watchdogs. In the latest faceoff over fission, the assistant to Ontario's energy minister admits he made a mistake when he told another newspaper the provincial cabinet has already given approval to a task force whose mandate it would be to recommend improvements to Ontario's existing nuclear emergency plans, which date back to 1986. Now, he says, cabinet is still considering whether to establish the task force. But, the local nuclear watchdog says, "We don't need another committee or task force to look into... planning" for a nuclear emergency. The pL-m needs major improvements now, the group contends. It wants iodine pills pre -distributed to residents living near nuclear plants and it's lobbying for ex1xinsion of the emergency planning area around the plants. Ilydro will stick by its story that the current nuclear emergency plan s are adequate. DNA will continue to argue that point. And, we the public will keep on scratching our heads, not knowing who to believe. If a task force will get to the heart of the matter and decide on the adequacy of current nuclear emergency plans, then the task force should he established. If its establishment will merely be a public relations ploy and its findings will be mcthbalk-A then the task force should be forgotten. What the people living near nuclear power plants need and dcsen-e to know is the truth. Tro nT N Y%s AD%TRTU;M PICKERING —The puck stops at Carolyn Audet's footsteps. And now the Pickering resident will be stopping rubber in the States. Audet is headed south of the border in an opportunity of a lifetime. The 16 -year-old was awarded a scholarship to attend Lawrence Academy private high school in Massachusetts after a stellar performance earlier in the year while playing with her Toronto Red Wings in a tournament in that area Audet was noticed by a couple of scouts from schools in New England when her team travelled south to play in the tourney hosted by Kimble Academy. Both schools had expressed interest in the young netminder, but it was Lawrence that came out on top. f r AK J A shutout victory over her new school might have helped her chances. But it was a previous game in which the Lawrence coach noticed his future goaltender. Despite what Audet called a horrible outing, it was enough to impress the scouts and get her a one- year offer to the academy. "The first game of the tournament was the worst game we played," recalls Audet. "We were told there would be scouts sitting in the stands watching us and that made us a little bit nervous." Nevertheless, Audet managed to shine throughout the tournament and it paid off in a big way. The former Pickering High School student who backstopped her school hockey team to a provincial ringette prior to the jump to hockey and it appears to have been a smooth transition. Audet had been stellar between the pipes for her Toronto Red Wings all season, posting a goals -against average under 1.50. One of the biggest shutouts came against Team Michigan when the Red Wings 1%1 -1, dt h 'If that opportunity ever came up that would be amazing. I would definitely jump at that' --Carolyn Audet on playing for the NHL championship last season can't wait to get to Lawrence and get the season under way. "I'm anxious to get down there and Stan Playing," says the school's new number -one netrninder. When the young goalie heads south she will also play on Lawrence's soccer, field hockey and possibly lacrosse teams. What makes the accomplishment even greater is that last year was the first year of hockey for Audet. She had spent eight years playing err ane A m e r i c a n opponents 1-0. Being a premier goaltender only helped solidify the Audet's chances of getting into the private school. Aside from her performance between the pipes, it was her outstanding school record that made it easy for Lawrence to offer her the chmce to play. Enrolled in the gifted program at Pickering H.S. and an honors student, Audet has her head on straight and hopes Lawrence can prepare her for a carter after school, providing hockey isn't the answer. Audet is not ruling out chances of playing pro hockey, but realizes if that dream doesn't pan out a future in medicine or archaeology would be something that interests her. "Playing in the NHL (National Hockey League) would be a dnmm," says AudeL "If that opportunity ever came up that would be amazing. I would definitely jtunp at that" Hopes of being the next Marton Rheaume may be a long shot for Audet but she feels playing some type of hockey after university is a definite possibility. She hopes the opportunity will lead to a scholarship in the United States but isn't ruling out the possibility of playing in her home country. The University of Toronto has already expressed interest in the scholar but Audet is keeping her options wide open for the time being. "I would rather play in the States," admits Audet. And she is candid about where she'd like to pursue her post- secondary hockey. An Ivy league school would be nice," says the Pickering netminder. Audet will enter Grade 11 at the academy and is looking forward to the hockey season. With practice, games, classes and homework, she realizes school and hockey will take up a big portion of the day. " liere's not going to be any free time... Making the trip south of the border will be easier as teammate Kristy Zamora of Oshawa was also offered a scholarship to attend Lawrence and help bolster the offence. The goaltender says she isn't worried about getting homesick but then: is a particular animal she will miss. "I'll miss my cat more than anything else," says the future of Lawrence Academy. Carolyn Audet has been awarded a scholarship to attend Lawrence Academy private high school in Massachusetts. Pe P who are in the market for a new home one simple question, "Why settle for a townhouse, when you could own a semi- detached home?" in the first month at the company's Windsong Heights community in Whitby, potential homebuyers come in pondering the same question and most have decided Windsong Heights is where they want to live. The reason why people are making this choice is as simple as the question above. At Windsong Heights, people find upscale semi-detached homes priced to compete with townhousing. Ken Slater says architect John Beresford has included a blend of features that reflect convenience and elegance. "The problem is trying to be too cre- ative," says Slater. "Most people want features they can relate to and in homes that fit their lifestyles. A Unique opportunity for new home buyers If you are looking for a new home, there is now a great opportunity to pur- chase a quality -built house in a prime Whitby location. Two established families which have been involved in the home-building industry in Durham Region for some time have joined to make new -home buyers a terrific offer. The two families are the Carnovales and the Russos and their joint venture under the Caruso Homes name is offer- ing'_1 all clay -brick homes in the final phase of Carnovale's Brookwood com- munity in northeast Whitby. What makes this release a terrific opportunity for new -home buyers is the fact that these homes are being built as part of an established community and purchasers won't be faced with some of the incoveniences — the dust, trucks, etc. — associated with new developments. These 21 homes will be situated on 30-, 35- or 45 -foot lots and will have features like Colonial trim and doors, ceramic tiles in foyers, 35 -ounce broad- 4 loom as standard throughout. The price of the homes starts at S 149,900 and you will find a size and floorplan that suits your tastes and needs — from a retirement bungalow to a two- storey family home. Clsoing dates are available from late summer. The Whitby location is second to none. Brookwood is near all amenities, from schools and shopping to recreation, while Hwy. 401 or the Whitby GO Transit station are just a short drive away. Also attractive is the fact that the builder is allowing the purchaser versa- tility when it comes to selecting their home. You can choose from one of the available plans and customize the interi- or layout to suit your needs or bring in your own plans and the builder will try to accomodate your home design. Norma King, of Norma King Design Inc., says there are a number of places which can be used more effectively to enlarge small spaces. Some of those ways are as simple as converting existing under-utilized spaces, such as porches and garages, into living space. Other ways are a little less obvious, but equally as effective. King suggests opening up space by removing unnecessary doors. If the doors are needed, they can be replaced with pocket doors, which do not take up valuable space since they slide into a space between the walls. Another option is to change the swing of a door so that it opens to the larger room, freeing up space in the smaller area. Walls, too, can be removed to open up rooms. If a sense of separa- tion is still desired, King suggests adding a vertical column, a move w'►'.ich also adds to the spacious feel of a room by virtue of its elongated height. Adding windows is a popular and effective way of enlarging a small space, especially if the window is floor -to -ceiling or a bay window, says King. The designer suggests finding extra space in small traditional bath- rooms be removing the linen closet. Adding that extra two feet may not seem like a significant addition of space, but in a standard cramped bathroom the extra room does "make a major difference," says King. Small bathrooms can also be enlarged with a comer vanity, fitted into a space usually squandered and freeing up other space. In bungalows, space can be found by looking above. King's firm com- pletely opened up a bungalow kitchen by removing the attic to give the room a cathedral ceiling and a sky- light• Another place where extra space can be found, particularly in older homes is below grade. Many city homes built prior to 1950 have basements with low ceil- ings of five to six -and -a -half feet. Although many have been remodeled for use as a recreation room, chances are that the full potential of the base- ment isn't being used, says Join Marantz, of Marantz Strang wall, a basement lowering company. Basement lowering can be a rela- tively inexpensive way of adding liv- ing space to a home and it does have definite advantages, says Marantz, who is a member of the Greater Toronto Home Builders' Association. Lowering a basement is not con- sidered as an addition to gross floor area, so taxes are not increased. . Zoning is not affected, variances are not necessary and it doesn't change the exterior appearance of the home. As well, says Marantz, lowering a basement does not take up valuable yard space in an effort to add interior living space. 1Kem eas az MVI Iatearfliors Gi*ve Rather than a complete and expen- sive remodeling project, consider giv- ing your kitchen a fresh new look by upgrading . For example, replacing all or some of your existing appliances with today's better -looking and more ener- gy-efficient ones can make your kitchen more attractive and more use- ful. This could mean upgrading from the conventional coil electric range to a smoothtop model. The new smoothtop models not only dramatically improve the kitchen's appearance, but they also make cooking, and cleaning up after- wards, easier. Generally, the most worthwhile fea- tures are those that save time by mak- ing cleanup easier, such as glass shelves in the refrigerator, self-clean- ing ovens or glass -ceramic smoothtops on ranges or cooktops. In fact one of the main features pro- 00k yelling the popularity of smoothto ranges is their ease of cleanup. Wit none of the nooks and crannies ft spills to hide in, they clean up quick! and easily. While smoothtops are relatively ne in this country, they've been popular Europe for decades. The Ceran glas ceramic panel and the speciall, designed heating elements undernea the panel have proven very durable.
