Boom ti*me for
college grads
❑ They're in much bigger demand by
employers this year than the class of '93
By SAL BOMAIARITO
STAFF REPORTER
DURHAM - Demand for college graduates jumped dramatically
in April, according to employment-related statistics released recently
by Durham College.
The college reports a 200 -per cent increase in full-time job leads
this April compared to the same month last year. Part-time and
summer job leads alone jumped by 300 per cent in April.
The statistics are cause for optimism, according to Margaret
,Greenley, director of placement and alumni at the college.
"We're seeing a real turnaround in
the number of job leads. The recession
and downturn in the economy in the Ve, re Seeing

While the economic picture seems Margaret i
brighter, the recession has had a lasting Greenley
effect on the way companies are hiring, i
Ms. Greenley notes.
The majority of job leads received by the college's placement
office are for contract or part-time positions, she points out. Some of
the contract positions lead to permanent positions for graduates,
however.
Most requests are coming from small- and medium-size
businesses looking to fill entry-level positions as large corporations
continue to downsize their workforce.
Many of the college's job leads are from job -placement agencies
hired by companies looking for qualified individuals to fill vacancies.

Cathy Bugden points to the damage to her witnesses to the accident Monday, July 4
1985 Hyundai Stellar caused by a hit-and-run around 5:20 p.m. on Hwy. 2 in front of the
driver in Ajax last week. Bugden is looking for Costco Wholesale outlet.

srAFF RFPORTER
AJAX - A single mother injured in a hit-and-run
accident here last week needs witnesses to finger
the other motorist who duped her so she can get
back on the road again as her life is "centred
around that car".
Cathy Bugden was told her 1985 Hyundai
Stellar is a write-off and her insurance company
won't cover the costs of the accident because she
didn't have collision coverage and the other driver
left the scene.
The incident occurred Monday, July 4 around
5:20 p.m., at the lights on Hwy. 2 in front of the
Costco Wholesale outlet in Ajax. While Ms.
Bugden was stopped at the lights, another car hit
her from behind.
A man driving the other car suggested they pull
to the side of the road. Ms. Bugden was initially
r0mclant to move until police arrived, but her car
was leaking gas and she wanted to get out of the
intersection.
'I pulled over and he started
following me and then
he kept going.'
"I pullod over and he started followiing me and
thea he kept gong. He seemed honest and said his
insurance would cover it."
Ms. Bugden didn't get a lieeace pinhole numba
and all she knows is that the car was large with a
grey -silvery color.
She describes the driver as white, late 30s or
early 40s, 51", with slim to medium build, dark
straight hair and moustache.
Another woman saw the incident and gave a
statement to police, Ms. Bugden says. Durham
Regional Police Constable Bob Annan reports he's
trying to contact that witness.
Ms. Bugden says other people witnessed the
mishap but left before police arrived.
'I'm panicking because
my life is centred
around that car.'
"We need something. Someone could give
information to help identify the car. I don't want
him to get away with this so he could do this to
someone else."
As for her insurance, Ms. Bugden says, "I don't
have collision. If he stayed at the scene, I'm
covered, but he left, so I'm screwed, more or less."
A Whitby resident with a five-year-old son, Ms.
Bugden is studying social work at Ryerson
Polytechnical Institute in Toronto where she was
beaded for a night -school class when the accident
"I'm panicking because my life is centred
around that car. I have to go to school and my son
can't get out."
Ms. Bugden notes her car is an older model and,
even if her insurance company would cover the
accident, she didn't expect to get much for the
vehicle.
She also suffered a back injury in the accident

Grit GST snowj09.

Lets face it, most of us ou d e to see the much -
maligned GST bite the dust.
The tax has no doubt been a oontributing factor to a slump
( in the retail market, as many would rather hold onto their cash
rather than submit it to that small insult at the bottom of the bill
r- of sale. It has also driven bucket loads of cash into the
underground market.
l The promise made by the Liberals in the last federal
election campaign to do away with the tax was undoubtedly a
contributing factor to their overwhelming victory.
But now that they are in a position to do something about it
we have to ask whether they are sincere or whether their
`t ' efforts just amount to another song and dance.
The Tories brought in the GST ostensibly to replace the
Manufacturers Sales Tax with something more 'fair'. In effect
`- t) it just meant another incrc-ase in taxes for Joe Blow. After the
\ GST was put in place, billions of dollars more were flowing
into government coffers than before.
Practically speaking, now that the GST is an established
\s . part of fe ekmal government revenue, the I_iber,ils are not going
S x f to want to cut off that supply. I lowever they seem to want us
to think they, in turn, are trying to bring in something more
_ 7 ' fair' .
Rene Soctens, Progressive Conservative MP for Ontario
r Riding between 1988 and 1993, says he's seen it all before. As
a member of the federal finance arrrunittee, he played a pert in
the birth of the GST.

O the Liberals were rejected by the Tories years ago, such as the
idea of taxing ford and medicine to lower the percentage of

provincial sales tax was also found to be- impractical.
In short, the federal government just se'erm to be rehashing
ti a lot of old ideas. .

Ajax
Resident wants more frequent grass pick up
To the editor,
At a time when we are trying to keep our towns and
cities clean it seems no matter how much the householder
tries it doesn't get much help from our city councilors.
If you drive along town streets you will see white
garbage bags filled with grass which have been sitting in
the stn for days. After two or three days these bags will
not stand the weight of the grass to be lifted an the truck.
A month between each pickup is much too long and as a
result of this our back streets are littered with bags of
grass -
Let's hope that somebody on council can get this
changed and have the grass picked up on regular garbage
days. I am sure all householders are doing their best to
help keep the Town of Pickering clean. So let's hope that
we can get something done regarding our grass piclWPkkeft

Mr. Vineham tried to escape but one of the dogs grabbed his arm.
A friend then threw a knife to the victim, who stabbed one of the
animals which died from its wounds.
Police say the dogs were familiar with Mr. Vineham, who was
hired to feed and water the animals and was playing with them
before the attack.
Nine dogs were housed in four separate pens behind the house.
Pickering -Ajax -Whitby Animal Control impounded an adult dog
and a puppy from the pen where the attack occurred as well as
another adult dog which was inadequately housed.
Police say there are no charges pending against the owner of the
animals.

SPECIAL TO TFIE Ews ADVERTISER
DURIIAM - An advertisement
in the News Advertiser recently
caught my attention.
It offered an evening of murder
and mystery in the eerie setting of
the Ganaraska Forest. It also
offered luxury five-star
accommodation in an authentic
medieval English manor, complete
with oak panelled rooms, brass
beds, eiderdowns and ho: water
bottles (in season). My curiosity
was aroused and so. in an attempt
to keep you, my readers. up to
date on an unusual theatre in the
Durham Region. I made my
reservation for a mystery evening
in the world of Agatha Christie.
My wife and I arrived as
instructed at 5 p.m. and were
warmly greeted by our host.
resplendent in butler's attire. R'e
were ushered into a beautiful
lounge where we were introduced
to our fellow participants — the
other guests and suspecu. Shortly
thereafter. we were served hors
d'oeuvres and wine by a charming
English maid.
Our fellow participants that
evening were a nurse from
Oshawa General hospital, a social
worker from the Durham Region
Roman Catholic Separate School
Board, a young couple from
Kitchener who had been married
that same day and another young
couple from Oshawa.
There we were eight strangers
who had been thrown together to
help solve the murder mystery
Beyond the Grave. Also present
were eight staff members from
Bellamy's Restaurant in Ajax.
They were there to solve a
different murder mystery in
another part of the house.
Introductions over, it was time
to get into costume, provided by
our hosts, and solve the

Pickering Powers its way to
final of U.S. soccer tourney
PICKERING - The Pickering
Power Snickers Canada under -16
boys' rep soccer team ran a little
short of juice at the Mid America
Soccer Classic in Cincinnati, Ohio
over the Canada Day weekend.
Power made it all the way to the
final with a record of three wins
and a tie, including a victo
over a hometown
Cincinnati squad in the
semi-final game.
However. Pickering had
to settle for runner-up
status after dropping a
close 1-0 decision to Mequon
United from Wisconsin in the
championship contest.
Mequon scored early in the
game on a difficult cross which
Power goalkeeper Rob Tilley was
unable to clear. Although
Pickering dominated the play, the
Power boys were unable to
penetrate a strong five -man
Mequon defence.
In semi-final action, Power
came up against Ohio State
champion Cincinnati Classics. In a
game which saw the referee hand
out seven yellow cards to Classic
players for a variety of incidents,
Power remained cool en route to a
5-0 victory. Domenic lammancini
opened the scoring by neatly
pushing the ball past the sprawling
aper. Iammancini tallied his
second goal later in the game,
with Lee Woods, Kevin
Smyth and Chris Stewart
rounding out the scoring.
In the opening game of
round-robin action, Power
aced the Cincinnati Gators and
posted a hard-fought 2-1 win.
Iammancini opened the scoring for
Power early in the game. The
Gators continued to press and
eventually scored when the Power
defence failed to clear the ball
from just outside the six-yard box.
With minutes to go, Stewart scored
on a terrific shot from 22 yards
away to put Pickering in front to
stay.
Pickering met a team from
Indiana in the second game of the
tourney. In a tough defensive
battle, the squads had to settle for a
1-1 draw. Ian Jeffrey opened the
scoring with a great shot that
travelled over the goalie's head
and into the top corner of the net.
A hand ball in the goal area gave
Indiana a penalty shot which tied
the game.
Power played its third game
against Costa Express from Ohio
and ran away with a 9-0 victory.
Woods netted the hat trick, while
Marlon Hibbert chipped in with
two. lammancini, Smyth, Stewart
and Sean Brooks struck for singles.
Team members are Christopher
Stewart, Sean Brooks, Yannis
Giannotios, Kevin Smyth, Ross
Duncan, Lee Woods, Mark
McLeish, Ian Jeffrey, Nicholas
Wilhelm, Luke Knor, Nicky
Sopovski, Domenic lammancini,
Robbie Eggleton, Marlon Hibbert
and Rob Tilley. Head coach is
Alex Stewart, assisted by John
Duncan.

good efforts in midfield. Excellent offensive games
were turned in by captain Taylor, McDougall, Jones,
Emma Ito and Howell.
In the second game, Ajax battled the weather and
injuries in a 3-0 loss to Whitby. Whitby scored three
goals in the first 15 minutes of the game and held off
Ajax from there.
Ajax goalie Erin Shirbon and strikers Ito and Jones
were all injured in the match.
Walton, Andrea Brown, Jessie Knowles, Christine
Lasseter, Sarah Kilgour and Missy Taylor turned in
strong efforts.
In their third game, the Warriors dominated Milton,
but couldn't score and had to settle for a 0-0 draw.

first half in goal and the second half on defence. An
injured Shkbon played the second half in net.
Also playing a good contest were Candace Liburd,
Kilgour and Lindsay Anderson.
Ajax was eliminated from the tournament when it
