drop in summer
school enrolment

DURHAM - More high school students are choosing
employment over education this summer, causing a drastic drop
in summer school enrolment at the Durham Board of Education.
An improved student job market has resulted in a 33 -per cent
decrease in the number of students taking full -credit courses this
year compared to 1993 and a 50 -per cent drop from two years
ago.
There are 800 students enrolled in full -credit courses this
summer, compared to 1,200 last year and 1,600 in 1992.
The drop in numbers is directly related to an improving
economy which has resulted in more job opportunities for
students, according to the board's principal of continuing
education Peter Fawcett.
"I don't think students could get summer jobs before. There's
more opportunity so students are working as opposed to coming
to school. The numbers are down to where they should be," Mr.
Fawcett says.
In all, the board has 2,700 students enrolled in summer
school at three high schools in Pickering, Whitby and Oshawa.

The lion's share -about 60 per cent — are enrolled in
remedial causes, Mr. Fawcett reports.
Students taking those courses either had failing grades during
the regular year or wanted to improve their marks, while those
enrolled in full -credit courses are taking them for the fust time.
Full -credit enrolment also has leveled off at the Durham
Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board, which is
offering summer school at four locations in Ajax, Pickering,

PICKERING - A disciplinary
hearing into allegations of
misconduct against a Durham
Regional Police detective ended

according to the office of the police
complaints commissioner, the

loss of pay, loss of days off,
suspension wkbout pay, demotion or
dismissal.
The complainant is 40 -year-old
Cornelia Vesna of Douglas Ave.,
Pkkaing, who was arrested by Diet.
Wiles and two uniformed police

Good, bad news
News from Durham's two school boards this past week is
both good and bad.
The Durham Board of Education and the Durham Region
Roman Catholic Separate School Board report a drastic drop
in the number of students enrolled in full -credit. courses this
summer.
If that was because there are fewer students who need to
attend summer school to improve grades that caused them to
fail, it would be good news.
Instead, one educator believes, the decline in summer
school students can be attributed to an improving economy
which has resulted in more job opportunities for teenagers.
"I don't think students could get summer jobs before.
Tbere's more opportunity so students are working as opposed
to coming to school. The numbers are down to where they
should be," says public board principal of continuing
education Peter Fawcett.
The fact that there are more jobs around for students is
good news. The bad news is that some of those teenagers
who've found work for the surnmer will never return to school
again, choosing instead to hang on to krw-paying, dead-end
Jobs when their peers are preparing for good canters.
But, the separate school board's principal of programs
believes the improved economy isn't the only reason for the
decline in summer school students. Jade Cole feels it's also
related to an increase in the number of young pew enrolling
in night school.
"There have been more students taking night school
courses rather than tying themselves up for the summer." If
that's the are, the decline in surruner school stridents may not
be bad news after all.
Of course to those students atterhding summer school, the
bad news is that they're stuck indoors during the day and
unable to enjoy the season. The good news for them is that
their hard work now will pay off later.

spineless, gutless piece of trash I've ever read.
It is so typical of "hide your head in the sand pacifists" who think
the best way to deal with drug -crazed career criminals who are
armed to the teeth is to say "Please put that gun away, pretty
please"_
Your obvious lack of knowledge of what it's really like being in a
life -and -death situation with a gun -wielding maniac is so pathetic
it's sickening.
You say emotions are running high after the death of Todd Baylis.
Naturally they are. But don't you think yours would be to if some
sub -human low -life scumball put a bullet through your son's bead?
If bollow-point bullets were in use, Todd Baylis might be alive
today. That's enough for me. If police want better ammunition, give

for our furry friends

DURHAM - Summer is a busy
time for many, so busy that we
often forget to take care of a loved
one.
Taking into consideration the
needs and safety of the family pet
may be overlooked. And, that can
lead to tragedy.

Whitby, says
leaving pets in a
car with the
windows rolled
up on a hot day is
the most common
occurrence. The
temperature in
the car can
increase rapidly
and a dog or cat
could develop
beat stroke just as
quickly.
If left
untreated beat stroke can be fatal,
Dr. Ingwersen says.
Dogs and cats can't sweat to
keep cool and they have a "limited
ability to reduce body
temperature" when hot, be notes.
According to the Ontario
Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals, signs of over-
exposure to beat include increased
panting, deep red to purple tongue.

convulsions. If you observe one or
more of these symptoms and your
pet has been in an area where beat
stroke is possible, immediately get
the animal to a cooler
environment, gradually immerse it
in cool water or soak it with a
garden hose. Apply ice to the

amounts of water and get it to a
vet as quickly as possible.
The next most - common

know why some dogs like to do
this and others don't, but he
advises against it as debris from
the road or an insect could bit the
dog in the eye and cause an injury.

vehicle and the animal sees a

He suggests dogs and cats be
restrained in an animal car seat —

remember to have their pet's
vaccinations updated and make
sure dogs are on a program to
prevent canine beartworm disease.
If you're going to the cottage
and takings your pet, the.SPCA
recommends keeping dogs and
cats on the property. This will cut
the risk of the animal getting lost,
being hit by cars travelling rural
roads or coming into contact with
other animals, especially wild
ones.
Another good idea is to put an
identification collar on your pet
before beading to cottage country.
For some reason, dogs like to
go after porcupines, confrontations
that can be very painful for your
pet. If your dog
does come back
with a nose full
of quills, have

nightmare must be their dog or cat
trying to buddy up to a skunk. Dr.

participating in an interesting hands-on environmental science course this
summer.
The board is offering students an advanced course at the Durham
Forest Environmental Centre near Uxbridge.
The emphasis is on hands-on participation by students and 90 per can

Society protects interests of Durham's South Asians

DURHAM - South Asians living
in Durham region no longer need to
look elsewhere to improve and
preserve their cultural, social and
economic interests.
The Pickering -based South Asian
Cultural Society has taken the lead.
Formed in 1992, the society is
slowly but steadily coming to the
fore. It presented its first cultural
show recently at Pine Ridge
Secondary School in Pickering.
Society president Surinder
Sehdev explains the mission of his
organization is "to contribute to the
continuous improvement of all South
Asians' cultural, social and
economic well-being by working
closely with all levels of government
in eliminating racism and achieving
employment and social equity„
The society was formed after he
and a few friends got together and
discussed the various problems
facing the community. The general
public had inaccurate notions and
misinformation about the South
Asians that had to be corrected, he
says. On the other hand, the
community itself lacked co-
operation and unity and didn't stand
on a common platform. So, the
society was formed to weld the
different peoples from a particular
region into one unit and then from
one common station, with one voice,
try to work for the betterment of the
wbde community.
The South Asian community
broadly draws on people from India
Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh
— countries neighboring each other
with almost common cultures and
backgrounds and strong historical
ties.
There are many ethnic — both
cultural and social — organizations
in North America, a large number in
Toronto. But, there are few such
groups in the Ajax -Pickering area
mainly because the South Asian

been sparse. Now, as Mr. Sehdev
explains, the community is growing
in size here, hence the need for such
an organization. And, it's difficult
for some people living in Ajax and
Pickering to participate in the
activities of groups based in the west
end.
T h e
society hopes
to accomp-
lish two
things. The
first is to
build bridges
' between the
community
Surinder members —
Sehdev like bringing
cultural and
racial harmony among different
religious groups. The second task is
to counter racism from outside —
both at the school level and in the job
market. That's one reason the society
wants to work closely with all levels
of government in eliminating racism
and achieving equal social and
employment opportunities.
With both aims in mind, the
society conducted two major
seminars in the past two years.
The first seminar, held in 1992,
dealt with intra -community race
relations in an effort to promote
racial harmony among Hindus,
Muslims and Sikhs. The seminar
was attended by about 450 people
with prominent community leaders
speaking on the occasion. Last year a
second seminar was conducted with
focus on racism faced by South
Asian students in schools. Roughly
200 students and 250 parents
attended the meeting. There were
also workshops at which solutions to
such problems were discussed.
Mr. Sehdev feels a lot can be
done by members of the community
themselves. It is not enough, he
feels, if individuals do well in life
personally — like acquire good jobs,
establish successful businesses and
pursue set careers. They must,
without selfish interests, take part in
community building. The tendency,
he thinks, in Successful individuals is
one of complacence — "I have
succeeded in life therefore the
community issues are not my
problem." This attitude is wrong.
People must spare their time and
energy for the service of the

evening attracted a crowd of nearly

Mr. Sebdev says the society has
quite a few projects in the works,
some still in the form of ideas but
others more concrete. One such
project is a seminar on mentorship.
South Asian professionals from
various disciplines will be invited to
conduct workshops for students. The
professionals will provide guidance,
leadership and suggestions on what
courses students should take and
how they should prepare for their
examinations. There'll be special
emphasis on networking.
The society also helps new
immigrants adjust to the changing
lifestyle they face when they move
to Canada.

DURHAM - Four Port Perry
teens are facing 86 charges after
a string of armed robberies and
break-ins across the region,
including a hold-up of an Ajax
convenience store last month.
The crime spree, which began
in late May, ended Wednesday
when Durham Regional Police
nabbed two suspects in an early
morning gas bar robbery.
Two teenagers toting a
shotgun entered the Esso Station
at 720 Taunton Rd. W. in Whitby
around 3:15 a.m.
The bandits demanded money
from the attendant who turned
over a small amount of cash, say
police.
After the teens jumped into a
car, the attendant called police
and passed on the licence plate
number of the getaway vehicle.
The car, which was found to
be stolen from Port Perry, was
spotted by police shortly after,
travelling eastbound on Taunton
Rd.
The vehicle was followed
northbound on Harmony Rd. in
Oshawa, through Columbus and
then north on Thickson Rd. in
Whitby to Ashburn, then to
Prince Albert and Port Perry.
The 1988 Pontiac Bonneville
continued on behind the medical
centre near Community
Memorial Hospital where it
struck a police cruiser.
The suspects attempted to
flee, but one 16 -year-old youth
was nabbed immediately by
police and the other, also 16,
was apprehended a short distance

away.
After further investigation,
police arrested two other Port
Pern youths, aged 15 and 17.
The 86 charges against the
youths include robbery, break
and enter, possession of stolen
property, wearing a disguise with
intent to commit an indictable
offence, theft over 51,000,
mischief over S1,000, dangerous
driving, using a firearm while
committing an indictable offence,
breach of undertaking, and
failing to remain at the scene of
an accident.
The crime spree started May
24 when three youths, armed
with a machete, a hammer and a
meat cleaver, burst into a
Lindsay Mac's Milk Store and
threatened a female clerk to hand
over cash and cigarettes, says
Staff Sergeant Sandy Ryrie.
Their next stop was a gas bar
on Taunton Rd. E. in Oshawa
May 26 when they jumped out of
a vehicle, armed with knives, and
demanded money from an
attendant.
Then on June 3, the Mac's
Milk Store on Westney Rd. in
Ajax was hit by three youths —
one packing a .22 -calibre rifle,
one a knife and the other serving
as lookout.
In another incident on June 8,
a youth ran up behind an 82 -
year -old woman walking along
the main street in Port Perry and
tried to snatch her purse, says
Staff Sgt. Ryrie. But the purse
strap broke and the woman hung
on to it as the culprit kept
running.
"People were prodded with
shotguns and threatened with
hammers and meat cleavers,"
says the staff sergeant, admitting
the victims were terrorized by the
armed robbers. "We were terribly
lucky no one was injured. We're
just fortunate we got them before
someone was seriously injured."

DURHAM - Stay away from
Frenchman's Bay.
The Pickering west beach was
recently tested by Durham's
Department of Health Services and
found to have high levels of
bacteria.
The health department will be
posting the beach as unsafe for
swimming along with Elgin Pond in
Uxbridge.
Two other beaches in the region
— Beaverton north and south
were previously posted as unsafe.
Chief health inspector Harold
Robinson says three other beaches
in the region have slightly elevated
bacterial readings including
Lakeview Park in Oshawa, Pleasure
Valley in Uxbridge and Thorah
Centennial in Brock Township.
The health department checks
for Escherichia coli bacteria by
taking five water samples from
each of the region's 16 beaches
once a week. The standard is 100 E.
coli per 100 millilitres of water. E.
coli is an intestinal bacteria found in
man or animal and is an indicator of
sewage pollution.
Rotary Park beach in Ajax was
previously posted as unsafe for
swimming but has been taken off
the list after bacteria levels dropped
-the last couple of weeks to 53.
However, Frenchman's Bay has
readings of 409 E. coli per 100
millilitres of water.
"We're never sure what the
reasons are (for contamination),"
says Mr. Robinson. "The bird
population does contribute to some
as well as heavy rainfall. Water
temperature also has a bearing on it
too; as the water temperature
increases, bacteria increases also."
People swimming in water
posted as unsafe for swimming are
at risk of getting ear, eye, nose and
throat infectiatts.
If water is swallowed, people
can suffer gastrointestinal
problems. Even though the
problems are rare, small children
can get sick if they ingest the water
whik playing and splashing in the
lake.
The health irtspecsor also warns
people not to swim in any of the
region's creeks and streams
because, in the past, they have
always proven to be polluted.
Last summer, eight beaches
across the region were posted as
unsafe for swimming including
Frenchman's Bay West in Pickering
(Aug. 4), Rotary Park beach in Ajax
(July 5), Lakeview Beach East in

the game until they
return home on July 13.
To get here, the
Afrikaners travelled more
than 10,000 miles on a
31 -hour flight.
The South African
children are being
billeted with Pickering /-
families during their two-
week stay in Canada

they'll attend the S.U.
(Scripture Union.

The baseball camp is
headed up by long-time
Pickering Baseball Association
coach Bob Johnston who was
instrumental in arranging the
visit by the South Africans.
The idea to bring the team to
Pickering was spearheaded by
Mike Milne, a missionary
consultant from Canada who
teaches baseball all over the
world with the Unlimited
Potential group. Milne was
asked by the Afrikaners if he
could recommend a baseball
camp and he endorsed the
Pickering camp.
"Mike (Milne) talked to me
about allowing for an extra 16
players coming from South
Africa. They were coming from
10,000 miles away so they
deserved to come," says
Johnston.
Johnston says, although he's
never been to South Africa, he
has been to the African nations
of Kenya and Uganda where
he's instructed baseball. That
experience was one of the
reasons the South African team
chose to come to Pickering.
Craig Kube, one of the
coaches of the South African
team made up of children who
attend Turfhall Primary School
in Capetown, says the
youngsters are having a good
time in Canada.
"They've all picked up
Canadian accents already. The
people here are so hospitable.
It's amazing. I feel so close to

Kube.
Kube says baseball has a
small, but growing presence in
South Africa, with only 33 teams
in all of the Cape Region. He
says baseball has a hard time
competing with cricket, the
national sport of South Africa.
"It's not a new game; it's just
not a big game in South Africa,"
he says.
Marlon Bowman, 10, says
coming to Canada has been
exciting "because of all the
places we're going to see and all
the friends we're going to meet"
The shortstop notes baseball
in Canada is "quite a bit faster"
than in South Africa and that
there are many great players
playing in Pickering. He was
most impressed with a shortstop
from the Pickering T -ball select
team that played against his
squad last Saturday when
Pickering won 44-32.

host team in the title game at the
annual Welland Mosquito Baseball
Tournament this past weekend.
The Red Sox knocked off
Welland 18-6 in the championship
contest to win their third
tournament title in as many
outings. Pickering won all five of
its games during the Welland
tournament.

game -winning sacrifice bunt to
score Greg Mair.
In the first game, Pickering
downed Thorold 22-1. Vahey
earned the win on the mound with
Aaron Schell working two innings
of relief. Tobin contributed five
runs batted in and Morgan has four
RBIs to lead the offence. Campbell
went four for five and Michael
Bond hit two for three.
In game two, Pickering defeated
Niagara Falls 7-3. Tobin pitched
four solid innings, giving up
one hit. McLaughlin
came on in relief to
sew up the victory.
Stephen Mceachen's solid hit in the
third inning woke up the sleeping
bats. Vahey provided the game -
winning RBI bunt and Tobin hit
Pickering's first home run of the
tourney.

combined for a one hitter in a 13-2
win over Stoney Creek in game

I recommend the TV show Rumaway Bay to kids who like a good
mystery. Deon, Alex, Shuku, Chan and Jo -Jo are the main characters.
They are the ones who solve all the mysteries. The show takes place on
Martinique. =island in the Can'bbean. So if I were you, I would watch
this show every night, except for Fridays (it's not on thea), at 6.30 p.m.
on channel 2 (NO).

Little Women:
There were four girls in the
story. Josephine, who they call
Jo, is my favorite character. Jo
is also a person who likes to
write. She wrote Little Women
about her family and so then we
could listen to the adventures
she had herself. Meg was the
oldest and she married a guy
named John. Josephine married
a guy who was a professor.
Beth, who was the second
youngest, got scarlet fever and
died. Amy who was the
youngest married Laurie. And
they were a happy family.

Tom Sawyer:
Tom Sawyer sails to a
deserted island and attends his
own funeral, trapped in a cave,
witnessing a murder in a
graveyard. These were some of
the suspenseful bloodcurdling
adventures in the book Tom
Sawyer. In my opinion, this was
also a story of friendship
between Tom Sawyer, Joe
Harper and the friendless orphan
Huckleberry Finn. Tom was also
very tricky by persuading other
boys to whitewash his Aunt
Polly's fence and gained many
treasures plus a juicy red apple.
I think this was a great story by
Mark Twain and I would love to
read more of his books such as
Huckleberry Finn and The
Prince and the Pauper.

most needed here.
As part of its research on social
needs, the Social Development
Council of Ajax -Pickering is
conducting telephone surveys of up
to 300 randomly -selected
households over a five-week period
from late June to the end of July.
"We want to learn more about the
problems and needs of people in the
Ajax -Pickering area so the Social
Development Council and other

aimed at identifying social trends in
Ajax -Pickering and their potential
impact; providing a community-
based, neutral snapshot of the
socioeconomic and demographic
climate of Ajax -Pickering;
identifying gaps in social services;
and identifying social service needs
in the two communities.
The other elements to the
Community Profile research are five
focus groups bringing together a
cross-section of people from the
community to discuss social trends,
unmet needs and potential ways of
addressing needs, and a review of
demographic and socioeconomic
trends and their potential
implications on services. This latter
