But apparently single men adapt better than women to this type of home and enjoy it more after they move in. The experts claim that it's due to the man's greater experience in maintaining the home. Women on the other hard buy a far greater percentage of condos than men do - possibly for the same reason. We've hard quite a bit about the single male parent lately. Toronto, the chairman is first elected to council and politicians then select a leader. Mr. Herrema favors the Niagara and Metro system, predicting it will probably be used in Durham by the year 2000. The Region of Durham Act sets out how the chairman is selected. For the act to be altered, regional council would have to approve changes and then request the Province follow suit. Theatre critic packs his pen and pesos to open Mexican murder mystery theatre By MARIANNE TAKACS AJAX-PICKERING - Larry O'Leary is headed down to Mexico to embark on a life of crime — theatre crime that is. Mr. O'Leary, who'll be missed as the News Advertiser's theatre critic, is packing his pen and his pesos for Puerto Vallarta to establish a murder mystery dinner theatre where the guests are the actors and the detectives who have to figure out whether it was the butler or someone else who did it. The concept has been very successful at hotels and rescxLti in Ontario. Mr. O'Leary came up with the idea of introducing murder mystery nights to Puerto Vallarta during a trip there to visit his daughter, who moved to Mexico from Toronto about two years ago. "I realized it had everything a resort should have — a beach, sand and sunbathing," he explains. "But when the sun went down at night there was very little to do." Setting up a theatre will hardly be a new experience for Mr. O'Leary, who has been involved in theatre for all of the 20 years he's lived in Pickering. For 15 years, he's been a drama instructor for adults and children for the Town of Pickering's recreation department. He has worked as an actor and director for the Pickering Players, the Hemngate Barn (dinner) Theatre, and theatres in Scarborough, North York and Toronto. And he has written about theatre for the News Advertiser for eight years. The audiencelguests/acwrs at his Puerto Vallarta establishment will be provided with costumes, a description of their role, an explanation of the murder case and a four -act guideline script to follow. The diaster memo for the evening will follow the theme of the murder mystery that is being acted ouL "I Kaye 99 per cent of it set up at this end," says Mr. O'Leary, 54. Costumes, brochures and other printing work have been prepared, - and he has a location for his theatre in Puerto Vallarta. He expects to leave for Mexico on July 11, initially for one year. His LaToya has natural talent FROM PAGE 1 ser J youngster most recent accomplishment came as no surprise to her mother, Megan Forte, who says her daughter has a natural talent for performing. "She has no training at all. It just comes naturally," says Mrs. Forte. LaToya will attend Cardinal Caster Academy for the performing arts in Toronto this fall. Her long list of acoomplishntenIS include being selected Miss YTV Vocal Spotlight in 1992 and 1994. She will appear on Ready or Not and Side Effect, two Canadian television shows scheduled to air this fall. Anyone who'd like to sponsor LaToya on her trip can call her at 428-0376. . CHOO moves to FM D But Ajax station will continue to play country music AJAX - After 27 years at the same address, C1100 Radio is changing neighborhoods. The Canadian Radio - television and Telecommunications Commission recently approved the purchase of the station by Durham Radio Inc. and the new owner's request to move to the FM hand. Program director Steve Kassay says the switch to 95.9 HM should be complete by mid- August. CHOO will continue to play country music. The new FM frequency is the only one available in Durham Region, Mr. Kassay explains. CHOO has been at 1390 on the AM dial since coming on the air in 1967. Switching to FM gives CHOO a chance to broadcast over a bigger area with a clearer signal 24 hours a day. (At night, AM stations have to reduce their power and change signal patterns because of atmospheric conditions.) The station will build a new transmitter in north Whitby to handle the new frequency, Mr. Kassay says. Offices and broadcast facilities will remain on Westney Rd. S. in Ajax. The station has 25 full and part-time employees and Mr. Kassay says more staff could he hired. Golden West Broadcasting Limited of Alton. Manitoba is selling CHOO to Durham Radio of Uxbridge. Mr. Kassay says the transfer= of ownership should be completed by August. Larry O'Leary is off to Mexico to establish a murder mystery dinner theatre. wife, Eileen, who is also extremely active in the theatre, will stay behind for now. The couple's ultimate aim is to retire to Puerto Vallarta for good - "I'm really going to miss doing my theatre review for the paper," he says. "But the supply of people - offering to come down and help has been endless," Mr. O'Leary is winding down or postponing his theatre commitments here. "It's a challenge," he says of his new project, noting he can always come back and restmc his wait here if things don't work out. But if they do work out, Mr. O'Leary says he definitely will not miss shoveling through those nasty Canadian winters. LITTLE IN LEAGUE 0 Fri. - Thus. 2:15,7:A 930. CRY SUCKERS N H. - Thus. 925. It's no longer responsive to the needs of local residents. Q McKenzie Castle is our Athlete of the Week. A member of the Ajax Raiders girls' squirt softball tum. McKenzie was the most valuable player of a tourna- ment in Simcoe on June 18. She pitched. played shortstop, catcher and outfield during UX KXVMy. Offralals of the tournament honolW McKenzie for her "all -round -go -get -it type of attitude". McKenzie's performance is inspiring because her left arm ends at the elbow. • Despite the fact that a large chunk of our tax dollar is going to negimial government. they don't seem to be paying much attention to what the local residents expect from govern- ments in tams of services. I think it's about time regional government was abolished. It saves nobody but the people who am elected to that body. Ikm Salvatore, Pickering TATTERED FLAG WAVING My beef is with companies and individuals who leave up flags even after they become old and tattered and they don't bother to replace them. Conserving energy is easy for all family members There are a few things you can do to conserve energy. Here is a list of 20 things you can do to save energy and you hard-earned dollars. 1) Raise your air-conditioning thermo- stat in the summer. For each degree higher, you'll cut your energy use by eight per cent. 2) Turn off incandescent lights when you are not using them, especially in the summer when they produce unwanted heat. 3) Use low -wattage light bulbs in halls and other places where no close-up tasks occur. However using a single, high - wattage bulb is more cost-efficient than using two lower -wattage bulbs. 4) Long -life light bulbs usually use more electricity than regular bulbs of the same wattage. Use long -life bulbs only in locations where access is difficult. 5) Use high -efficiency light bulbs in Facts on the Ontario New Home Warranty Program The Ontario New Home Warranty Program was established to benefit both the homebuyer and the homebuilder. Here are a few facts you may not know about the Ontario New Home Warranty Program: J The Government of Ontario passed the Ontario New Home Warranties Plan Act in 1976 making the then existing voluntary warranty program mandatory and ensuring that every new home and condo- minium unit built for sale in Ontario is covered by warranty. U The Ontario New Home Warranty Program is the only mandatory new home warranty pro- gram in Canada and one of the very few in the world. U The Ontario New Home Warranty Program was established as an inde- pendent, non-profit corporation to protect consumers by administering and enforcing the Ontario New Home Warranties Plan Act. O The goals of the Ontario New Home Wan=y Program also include regulation of builders to ensure they comply with the Ontario New Home Warranties Plan Act. 0 Since it was established, the Ontario New Home Warranty Program has provided protection to more than 600,000 new homes in Ontario. Currently, more than 300,000 homes are covered. O Over the years, the Ontario New Home Warranty Program has expand- ed and enhanced its coverage. It has introduced the Home Builder's Guide to After Sales Service (a builder rat- ing program), established the Ernest Assaly Award to annually recognize the province's best builder for after sales service and published the Code and Construction Guide to Housing. your outside security lights. Put them on a time or photoelectric switch. 6) Light only the specific area where you are working. 7) Grime from cooking, smoking and dust can dirty a light bulb and reduce the light it puts out. Inspect and clean bulbs regularly. 8) Avoid checking on food while it cooks. Each time you open your oven door, 25 per cent of the heat is lost. 9) Cooking in oven -safe glass or ceram- ic pans allows you to lower your oven temperature 25 degrees from what the recipe calls for. 10) Turn off an electric oven 15 minutes before the end of the cooking time and let the remaining heat finish the cook- ing. 11) Thawing frozen foods in the refriger- ator before cooking lets you cut the cooking time by approximately one third. 12) Use the automatic cycle on your clothes dryer. 13) Run your garbage disposal with cold water. 14) Use warm or cold water for washing clothes and always use a cold rinse. You also save more money by running full washer loads. 15) Keep heating and air conditioning filters clean. It's difficult to force air through dirty filters. 16) Use fans instead of air conditioning for cooling. Fans use only about 10 per cent of the energy air conditioners. 17) Weatherstrip all doors and windows, even those in rooms you are not using. 18) Replace your old thermostat with a newer clock model. These devices can be set to automatically lower your home's temperature at bedtime and raise it again in the morning. 19) Keep your fireplace damper dosed when the fireplace isn't being used. If you have glass fireplace doors, keep them closed as well. 20) Schedule annual maintenance check- ups for your heating and cooling system. By keeping your system in optimal working condition, you'll not only reduce energy costs. but also extend its service life. Energy is just too valuable a resource to waste, so get into the habit of wise energy management. You've already taken the first step toward controlling your monthly utility bills by going through these tips. These energy-saving tips are brought to you by Ontario Hydro and New Homes & Interiors. Norma King, of Norma King Design Inc., says there are a number of places which can be used more effectively to enlarge small spaces. Some of those ways are as simple as converting existing under-utilized spaces, such as porches and garages, into living space. Other ways are a little less obvious, but equally as effective. King suggests opening up space by removing unnecessary doors. If the doors are needed, they can be replaced with pocket doors, which do not take up valuable space since they slide into a space between the walls. Another option is to change the swing of a door so that it opens to the larger room, freeing up space in the smaller area. Walls, too, can be removed to open up rooms. If a sense of separa- tion is still desired. King suggests adding a vertical column, a move waich also adds to the spacious feel of a room by virtue of its elongated height. Adding windows is a popular and effective way of enlarging a small space, especially if the window is floor -to -ceiling or a bay window, says King. The designer suggests finding extra space in small traditional bath- rooms be removing the linen closet. Adding that extra two feet may not seem like a significant addition of space, but in a standard cramped bathroom the extra room does "make a major difference,.. says King. Small bathrooms can also be enlarged with a corner vanity, fitted into a space usually squandered and freeing up other space. In bungalows, space can be found by looking above. King's firm com- pletely opened up a bungalow kitchen by removing the attic to give the room a cathedral ceiling and a sky- light - Another place where extra space can be found, particularly in older homes is below grade. Many city homes built prior to 1950 have basements with low ceil- ings of five to six -aid -a -half feet. Although many have been remodeled for use as a recreation room, chances are that the full potential of the base- ment isn't being used, says John Marantz, of Marantz strong Wall, a basement lowering company. Basement lowering can be a rela- tively inexpensive way of adding liv- ing space to a home and it does have definite advantages, says Marantz, who is a member of the Greater 'Ibro m Home Builders' Association. Lowering a basement is not con- sidered as an addition to gross floor area, so taxes are not increased Zoning is not affected, variances are not necessary and it doesn't change the exterior appearance of the home. As well, says Marmtz, lowering a basement does not take up valuable yard space in an effort to add interior living space. NeMw IBMVMS 84D nand Jrza erlors 1 0 --- ive vou Rather than a comp ete and expen- sive remodeling project, consider giv- ing your kitchen a fresh new look by upgrading . For example, replacing all or some of your existing appliances with today's better -looking and more ener- gy-efficient ones can make your kitchen more attractive and more use- ful. This could mean upgrading from the conventional coil electric range to a smoothtop model. The new smoothtop models not only dramatically improve the kitchen's appearance, but they also make cooking, and cleaning up after- wards, easier. Expect to spend at least a month shopping and learning about the appli- ances that appeal to you. Start a folder, Kitc visit homes shows, open houses and dealer showrooms. Ask your friends what they like and don't like about their appliances. Look for articles and advertisements. Pick up brochures and write for information, most of which are available free of charge. Compare prices and services of vari- ous retail outlets. Then, set up a budget and put money aside. Think carefully about which appli- ance features you will actually use. Generally, the most worthwhile fea- tures are those that save time by mak- ing cleanup easier, such as glass shelves in the refrigerator, self-clean- ing ovens or glass -ceramic smoothtops on ranges or cooktops. In fact one of the main features pro- pelling the popularity of smoothtop ranges is their ease of cleanup. With none of the nooks and crannies for spills to hide in, they clean up quickly and easily. While smoothtops are relatively new in this country, they've been popular in Europe for decades. The Ceran glass - ceramic panel and the specially - designed heating elements underneath the panel have proven very durable. North American manufacturers offer a variety of models with Ceran smoothtops and with different surface decorations that allow the ranges to match any kitchen decor. If you fee that you may require design assistance, make sure that you select a professional who is a certified kitchen designer. One could almost be lead to believe that people who already own a home are not important to the home-building industry. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, prices and other economic Buying a new home is exciting and rewarding Buying a new home can be an excit- ing and rewarding process. Before sign- ing on the dotted line, however, you should do some research. This means contacting the Oshawa -Durham Home Builders' Association for the names of builder members in the area. It also means visiting open houses and model homes with your list of must - haves versus nice -to -haves in hand, always balancing you needs and desires with your financial resources. Once you have decided on a builder and home style, you must then decide on the fea- tures that will ultimately result in your own unique home. That is why it is so important you select a professional builder, one who will help to make the entire process. from first offer to celebrating your first anniversary in your new home, run as smoothly and trouble-free as possible. Your and your professional builder will share a Very important goal — making sure you will enjoy your new home long after you receive the keys to the front door. Constructing a house is a complex process that demands expert planning, knowledge of municipal bylaws and reg- ulations, careful scheduling and skilled co-ordination by an experienced builder. A typical house contains more than 3.000 pans, all of which must be assem- bled carefully and in sequence. It takes approximately 30 different subtrades to carry out this work, from framers to roofers to finishing carpenters, all of whom must arrive at the building site in the right order at lite right time. In fact, there are over 100 workers involved in the construction of a new single-family home. The professional home builder stands at the centre of this process as the driv- ing force in getting together materials, labor and information, guiding the pro- ject through a schedule and packaging everything into an attractive quality product that will provide you, the home owner, with years of comfort and plea- sure. Establishing a good working relataa- ship with your builder at the outset will help both of you throughout the con- struction process. Find out who your ongoing contact will be. Your builder may have a representative such as a salesperson who is responsible for cus- tomer relations and who will be avail- able for consultation during the actual construction of your home. If desired, your builder can provide you with information about financing, your new home. Some builders arrange mortgages in order to facilitate the sale and make the purchasing process as easy as possible. Others can make suitable recommendations to their customers based on long-standing working rela- tionships with one or several lending institutions in the community. Your builder may also be able to give you useful advice if you have to sell your existing home in order to buy a new home. Most builders have cultivat- ed a good business relationship with resale brokers in the community. Before work can begin, your builder will need a firm offer that includes final specification of all features, options and changes. This requires you to consider your needs and wants carefully in light of the features and options offered by the builder. Most builders offer a num- ber of choices for their standard finish- ing products, like color of the carpeting and style of kitchen and bathroom tiles. Many builders also have full inventory of optional items such as upgraded kitchen cupboards and flooring. circumstances benefit move -up buyers as much as the people looking to pur- chase their first home. Move -up buyers can now have the home of their dreams and at a price they can afford. "There has probably never been a better time to buy a new home than right now," says Mary Lawson, a spokesperson for the Canadian Home Builders' Association. "In order to boost consumer confidence, builders are offering some great deals. Today's buy- ers are getting incredible value for their money." Affordability has never been lower. Low mortgage rates have reduced the cost of buying a house and enabled con- sumers to afford higher priced homes. Today's move -up buyers are finding that they can buy "more house for their money" than they expected. Builders are offering a vast selection of new homes, specifically tailored to move -up buyers. with all the features and amenities that these consumers could not afford in their previous homes — large bedrooms with ensuites, spa- cious bathrooms with whirlpool tubs, main -floor laundry rooms, lots and lots of windows in all sizes and shapes, bright and efficient kitchens, formal and informal dining eating areas, green- house kitchens and many other features that add to the quality of life through comfort, convenience and aesthetic pleasure. At the same time, builders are begin- ning to see a number of changes in the demands and desires of move -up buy- ers.
