the number of committee
meetings trustees must
attend, the public school
board hopes it will better
meet the needs of taxpayers.
"We believe it will allow
more time for greater
community involvement,"
Durham Board of Education
chairman Patricia Bowman
says of plans to consolidate
four monthly committee
meetings into two meetings
a month.
Beginning in September,
the board will no longer
hold separate meetings for
each of its four standing
committees — property and
planning, finance and
transportation, program, and
employee relations. Instead,
two of those issues will be
examined at each monthly
meeting — which will be
held the first and third
Monday of every month and
will be attended by every
trustee.
Because some trustees
now sit on up to three
committees and may attend
the other out of Interest,
consolidating meetings will
free up their time, giving
them a better opportunity to
respond to taxpayers'
concerns, Miss Bowman
believes.
That will also allow
trustees to avoid duplication,
maintains the Whitby
trustee, pointing to this
year's budget debate on all -
day, every -other -day
kindergarten. Before that
decision was finalized, the
issue was passed five times
between finance and
transportation and program
committees.
While delegations will
still be invited to make
presentations at the monthly
meetings, Miss Bowman
suggests trustees may now
have time to address
concerns outside the
boardroom.
"It may be more
constructive, depending on
the issue, to be out in the
community than to expect
the community to come to
us," explains Miss Bowman.
Though the revamped
committee structure will be
on trial three months, Miss
Bowman is confident it will
"streamline" the work of
trustees, whose ranks will be
reduced from 20 to 15 at
November's municipal
election.
The full board will
continue to meet on the
second and fourth Mondays
of each month.

It's a little disturbing to hear that violent crime in
Durham is higher by population than in other regions,
but when you look at the numbers more closely, things
aren't really that bad here.
When it comes to your run-of-the-mill crimes, our
region, it seems, is just about average. Durham had
33,400 reported incidents of crime in 1992. When
compared to its population of 390,000, that works out to
one incident of crime for every 11 people over the year.
When compared to other regions, that is more or less
average. York had one incident for every 14 people,
while Niagara had one for every nine.
But in the case of violent crime, Statistics Canada
shows Durham Region to have higher numbers for 1992
when compared to population.
Durham Region had 4,000 incidents of violent crime,
which works out to one incident for every 97 people.
York, by comparison, had one incident for every 180
people, while Niagara had one per 115.
Hamilton Region was the only area with higher rates
of crime per capita than Durham.
But we should keep this in perspective. The numbers
aren't so outrageous that we should start panicking and
calling it a crisis or an epidemic. Durham isn't New
York City. It isn't even Toronto. It is still a region
where people can feel relatively safe in raising their
children or walking the streets at night.
Another thing to keep in mind is that overall
numbers, including those of violent crime, have been
actually dropping over the past couple of years — in
Durham and elsewhere.
While we shouldn't dismiss the 1992 numbers out of
hand, let's look on the positive side and remember
things aren't really that bad and, in any case, they're
getting better.

asked), we catch just some glurtpses of the problems facing parents.
We are surrounded ounded by and paying the penalty for the failures of

waivers, politicians, etc. Where was the Teachers' Associabon when all of this
was happening? They either supported this intellecnral mayhem actively or

heroes who
nabbed bandits

heroes recognized
for bravery
PICKERING - Three
Pickering heroes were honored at
Tuesday night's meeting of Town
council for their bravery in
chasing and nabbing crime
suspects in two separate incidents
in Scarborough and Markham.
John and Frederika Evanoff of
Littleford St. received civic
recognition awards for following
and capturing a suspect in a
Scarborough convenience store
robbery in April of last year.
Dave Ryan of Rouge Valley
Dr. was honored for an incident
last October in which he chased a
fraud suspect in his car, forced
him to the side of the road and
held him until police arrived. Mr.
Ryan is familiar to most local
residents as a director of
Pickering -Ajax Citizens Together
(PACT) for the Environment.
All three have received
civilian citations for their heroics
from Metropolitan Toronto
Police.
Town to regulate
newspaper boxes?
❑ Staff to look at
tighter controls
PICKERING - Town council
has instructed Pickering's director
of public works to investigate the
possibility of regulating the
location and maintenance of
newspaper boxes in the town.
Ward 1 councillor Maurice
Brenner proposed the study
Tuesday, saying he's received
complaints from residents about
newspaper boxes crowding street
comer and boulevards. He also
noted Town property is often
damaged when the boxes are
vandalized, and the grass isn't
always properly maintained on
boulevards where the boxes are
located. Mr. Brenner added the
newspapers can't be blamed for

the problems, because the Town
currently has no regulations
regarding the boxes.
Staff were directed to loop into
the possibilities of dictating
where the boxes can be located,
installing concrete pads for them,
and entering into lease
agreements with the owners of the
boxes. Councillors were told
many other municipalities
regulate the boxes.
Council is to receive a report
on the matter at its first meeting
in September.

result of the discussion, the ticket
can be paid or withdrawn. Or, if

case, the defendant will have to
fill out a notice of intention to
appear in court, and a court date
will be set.
The Town is currently in the
process of drawing up guidelines
by which its officials will deal
with people wanting to dispute
their tickets. These guidelines,
according to Town prosecutor
Rhonda Bishop, will likely
provide for the reduction of fines

PICKERING — It's been a
vintage month for several local
winemakers.
A number of members of the
Pickering Wine Guild were
among the top finishers in the
recent annual festival held by the
Amateur Winemakers of Ontario
at McMaster University in
Hamilton.

The Canada Employment
Centre for Students (CEC-S) is
sending out its Clean Up Crew to
wash windows, sweep sidewalks
and pick up garbage at the
Harwood Place Mall in Ajax, in
downtown Oshawa, Bowmanville
and Whitby.
The goal of the event is
twofold: to promote student hiring
and to clean up the community.
The Clears Up Crew consists of
summer employment officers and
student volunteers who'll be busy
washing employers' windows in
various locations in hopes of
putting CEC-S posters in the
windows. They'll sweep
sidewalks and pick up g AtW in
front of ptwficipadng businesses.

bronze medal each.
The Amateur Winemakers of
Ontario is an organization in its
26th year, dedicated to the
development of fine wines, cider
and brews crafted for personal
use. The Pickering Wine Guild
was founded in 1979 and has
twice won provincial club
championships.

president recognized provincially
for his leadership skills was
among those applauded by the
separate board at an awards
ceremony Monday.
Michael Hills of St. Mary
Catholic Secondary School in
Pickering was the first Durham
student to win an award
presented annually to an
outstanding high school pupil by
the Ontario Separate School
Trustees' Association (OSSTA).
He received that award in
April for establishing both a peer
mediation group to resolve
conflicts at school and a support
group for students whose parents
have died or divorced. He also
established a school newspaper,
organized fund-raising events
and was involved in a
presentation to the Royal
Commission on Learning last
year.
The Durham Region Roman
Catholic Separate School Board
also recognized those students
nominated by their schools for
that award.
Jennifer Delmonte of
Archbishop Denis O'Connor
High School in Ajax received a
scroll for her nomination, which
highlighted her involvement in
the Circle of Friends, a support
group for students with special
needs. She's also involved in
school sports, writes for the
school newspaper and is a lector
at St. Bernadette's parish.
St. Jude Catholic School
student Tenille Davis of Ajax
received a scroll after being
nominated for the OSSTA's
elementary youth award. She's
described by teachers as a
"positive leader in class by her
kind, gentle manner", a willing
volunteer at school masses, and
active in sports.
Meanwhile, the board
recognized 500 years of teaching
by honoring 20 teachers and stats
who have dedicated 25 years of
service to Catholic education.

I like the movie Fra Willy. I fine the part when

the pet when Welly jumped over the rocks and he

Munsch leads

comes to tough
subjects
Robert Munsch writes hilarious books about unmentionable
subjects.
His books make children laugh, love reading and being read to.
What a perfect combination. some of his books have been banes
from schools and libraries because of their treatment of certain
socially -unacceptable behaviours. All I can tell you is my son
loves his books and so do tons of kids and their parents. That is
why Robert Munsch is one of Canada's best-selling autbors. He
fives in Guelph, Ontario with his wife and three children.
Thomas's Snowsuit is one story that some schools in Toronto
do not like. (Durham teachers love Robert Munsch! Yeah!)
Thomas is in kindergarten and has to wear an ugly brown
snowsuit that be hates with a passion. Without ruining the story
for you, I will tell you that at recess time the principal, Thomas
and his teacher have a huge tussle with his snowsuit and someone
ends up in their underwear ...... =0 it isn't Thomas!
Another controversial book he has written is called Good
Families Don't which is a book about passing gas or 1—TING!
Something that never happens in my family!!
Other humorous stories include Show and Tell, Pigs and
Moira's Birthday to name a few. He also writes soft gentle stories
such as Love You Forever which is guaranteed to make you cry.
It's an excellent book for any parent to share in a loving geode
environment and makes the perfect bedtime story. The mother
recounts the following verse to her son nightly throughout his life:
"I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm

handball players had their fair share
of success at the Canadian National
Handball Clim pionships in Quebec
City recently.
The nationals drew 300
participants firm across the country,
including seven Ajax and Pickering
athletes.
Cement Ontario singles champion
Chris Jennings of Pickering
advanced all the way to the final
before losing a tight match to Danny
Bell of Quebec City. Bell is
currently ranked sixth on the U.S.
pro tour and has won seven national
titles.
In the semi-finals, Jennings
defeated Mery Deckert of Winnipeg
in two straight games to qualify for
the championship.

Ajax ball mosquitoes win
championship of tourney
AJAX - The Ajax Spartans
Empire Financial Group minor
mosquito rep baseball team swept
to victory at the Pickering Village
Sports Baseball Tournament in
Ajax June 11 and 12.
The Spartans won all four of
their games, including a 5-4
victory over Cobourg in the
championship contest.
In the bottom of the seventh
and final inning in the title game
with the score tied 4-4, Jason
Wiles smashed a triple and scored
the winning run when Brent Boss
singled. Wiles was named the
most valuable player of the game.
Ajax drew first blood in the
championship tilt when Kevin
Brown stole home and Joshua
Brock and Ian Wight also crossed
the plate for a 3-0 lead in the
second inning. Cobourg scored
two in the bottom of the fourth to
close the gap to 3-2, then took a
4-3 lead with two runs in the
sixth. Ajax's Ned Aiken tied the
score in the sixth, setting the table
for the winning run in the
seventh.
Daniel Strang and Wight
combined on the mound to share
the win in the title game.
The Spartans started the
tourney by pounding Wexford 22-
2. Aiken earned the MVP honors
for Ajax with a four -for -four
outing at the plate. Strang and
Brian Smart shared the pitching
duties.
In the second game, Ajax
pulled out a 6-2 win over Whitby.
Wight, Wiles,. Boss, Brock,
Strang and Aiken scored the Ajax
runs. Wight and Brown each
singled and doubled in the
contest, while singles were rapped
out by Adam Ryckman, Wiles,
Russel Dabusinskas, Brock and
Strang. Brown started on the
mound, with Ryckman coming on
in middle relief and Wight closing
•
the door on the victory. Wight
also earned MVP honors.
With identical unblemished
records, Ajax and Cobourg went
head-to-head in the third game of
the tourney. The Spartans
narrowly prevailed 7-6. Game
MVP Ryan Anderson led the way
with a triple, single, two RBIs and
a run scored. Smart started on the
mound, giving way to Anderson
who pitched in middle relief.
Brock retired the side in the final
inning to earn the save.
In recent Eastern Ontario
Baseball Association action, Ajax
split a home -and -home series with
Whitby. Ajax defeated Whitby 7-
6, then lost 7-6 in the second
game.

blank Pickering
in under - 11 soccer
AJAX - The Ajax Warriors under -11 rep boys' team remains
undefeated after four games this season following a 1-0 shutout over
a strong Pickering Power squad in recent Central Soccer League
Premier Division action.
Jonathan Carter scored on a penalty kick in the fust half and was
outstanding throughout the game in the midfield position both
offensively and defensively.
Joey Saltarelli was once again a standout anchoring the Ajax
defence corps of Chris Walker, Germaine Smith and David Bird.
In an earlier contest, the Warriors had to settle for a 2-2 tie against
West Rouge after establishing a 2-0 lead.
Scoring for Ajax were Jonathan Carter on a long free kick and
Tejane Gibbs on a nice pass from Corey Sevier.
Other members of the squad contributing to its good start this
season are Jason Baretto, Jonathan Burgess, Kristian Halkias, John
Livingstone, Lee Scholl, Lawrence Swailes and Mathan Yu.
The Warriors are in second place in their division with a record of
two wins and two ties.

experience. Training starts July 25 and ends November 4. 1994.
BUSINESS TO BUSINESS SELLING (Industrial Sales)
Good sales people are difficult to find and are among the most valuable asset
of a company. This 140 -hour program will provide the skills necessary to
effectively sell m a business or industrial environment. Eligible applicants will
have at least five years work experience and at least one year In sales. This
program begins on August 2 and ends September 2, 1994
Eligibility Criteria: Applicants for these programs must be
unemployed and receiving UIC benefits at the time of the course start date and
must reside in the Region of Durham. In addition, you must mew the
