That will pay for renovations and additions to 34 existing schools, including the following in Ajax: Lord Durham, Westney Heights, Applenoft, Cadaaclkque and Duffin's Bay. In Pickning, construction will take place at Valley Farm, Elizabeth B. Phin, Fairport Beach, Gandetsedagon and Glengrove. Of 122 school boards in Ontario which offer both eleatelttary and secondary programs, 100 already provide junior kindergarten — including Durham's separate board — or will have it fully implemented in September. The Province will spend $35 million over the next two years to assist those boards which haven't yet introduced junior kindergarten. Funding will kick in this year and continue through 1996. Though the ministry of education and training decided in March that all boards must offer that program beginning in September, it is allowing some — including the Durham public board — to phase it in over three years. Under that phase-in, the board will New water plant will be safe: Roger Anderson FROM PAGE l councillors to support the original motion to put a hold on the new plant. She maintained three of the 21 conditions established by the Province's Environmental Assessment Advisory Committee for proceeding with the facility can't be met. She said the technology doesn't yet exist for the on-line tritium -monitoring system called for by the advisory committee, that a required model for tritium movement from the nuclear station to the water plant has not been developed, and that sufficient alternate water supplies aren't available for the times tritium levels at the facility might rise above the acceptable standard. There was considerable discussion between Mrs. Willard and councillors on whether current tritium levels and levels at the proposed water intake for the new plant would meet the 20bq/1 standard. Ward 2 councillor Kip Van Kempen said water sampling has indicated tritium levels of 4.4 to 10 bq/l at the proposed new intake. But Mrs. Willard maintained the averaging of tritium levels and intermittent sampling which has taken place don't provide a true picture of the situation. She said it must be taken into account that on individual days and over the winter months the levels have risers way above 20 bqA. Her husband, Bob Willard, told councillors simply moving the intake farther out into the lake (as is being planned for the new plant) won't solve the tritium problem because sampling has shown drat "mm behaves very erratically" and tritium levels farther offshore are not consistently lower than those closer to shoe. Mrs. Willard urged Pickering Petticoat pool finally opens PICKERING — The swimming pool at the Petticoat Creek Conservation Area has fmauy opened. The pool had been scheduled to open last Saturday. But disappointed would-be swimmers who turned up at the park that weekend to escape the sweltering heat found it closed. Installation of a new plastic lining couldn't be completed on time. A new opening date was set for Tuesday, but a water line broke Monday night. The pool finally opened Thursday and is scheduled to remain open =W Labor Day. to demand the 20bq/1 standard be adopted by the Province. She said councillors would be "degrading public health for Ajax and Pickering residents" if they didn't support the new standard. Mrs. Willard suggested high tritium levels in drinking water are likely responsible for high rates of certain cancers and birth defects in She noted that in 1992 (the last year for which she had figures available), the existing Ajax water plant would have had to dose for approximately half the year if the 20 bq/1 standard was in place. According to Mrs. Willard, any new water plant should be located at least five miles away from the nuclear station. Ajax regional councillor Roger Anderson attended the meeting to bring the Region's assurances that the new plant will be safe and "the best that we can possibly have. "The location of the plant is not up for discussion," he said, and maintained the 21 conditions placed on it would all be met by the end of Irene. Mr. Anderson also said he'd be "amazed" if the Province adopts the 20 bgll standard. He noted be has two children and several family members living in the area and "would not do anything to hurt them or the residents of Ajax or the residents of Pickering". Mr. Brenner told his council colleagues the Region can't be counted of to protect Pickering's interests, particularly since Durham officials have stated the neve plant must go ahead or else developareat in the arca will have to shut down. The councillor also remarked that the Region said "Mm me" on the garbage dump issue, and hasn't proved itself wor'.tty of that trust. establish two classes in each of its six learning areas — Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa (which is divided into two areas) and the northern community — beginning in January. (Among the fust to offer junior kindergarten here are Lord Durham and Roland Micbener schools and the Aldon Early Years Learning Centre in Ajax and Rosebank Road and Woodlands Centennial schools in Pickering. Registration is no longer being accepted, as enrolment is full.) The board plans to offer the program at up to eight schools in each learning area in 1995- 96, in up to 15 in 1996-97 and in all schools in 1997-98. In keeping with a revamped kindergarten program, junior kindergarten classes will be offered on an all -day, every -other -day schedule. The board has asked the ministry to re- arrange the time traditionally spent in junior and senior kindergarten. Instead of spending one-half day for a full year in each, it proposes to offer senior kindergarten classes for a full day on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and Junior kindergarten for a full day on Tuesday and Thursday. An alternate junior kindergarten schedule hasn't been put forward should the ministry tum down that proposal. oil WITH THE PURCHASE OF A YORK HIGH EFFICIENCY GAS FURNACE AND/OR AIR CONDITIONER & ACCESSORIES... & RECEIVE UP TO 300 AIR MILES travel miles! ■ Receive York's standard 5 -Year parts warranty at no extra cost! Therell be thousands of youngsters throwing caution to the wind for the next several weeks, caught up in the youthful exuberance of a summer with no school. It's incumbent upon us to lecture motorists to keep an eye out for the wee ones as their carefree glee makes them particularly vulnerable to childish behavior that can have tragic consequences. Some adults, too, get caught up in the spirit of summer and do things they know are wrong. Go ahead and have a couple of cool ones on a hot day but please don't get behind the wheel of a car if you've been drinking. The same warning goes out to boaters. Anti, boaters, anglers and swimmers are reminded to be careful on and in the water. We want you around to enjoy next summer. Enough preaching already. Time to get on with the party. Congratulations to all students who passed this school year and especially to those who are graduating from elementary school to Secondary school, from high school to higher education or the working world, from university or college to a career. The transition from Grade 8 to Grade 9 can be scary for youngsters. Likewise the jump from high school to higher education can be intimidating for teenagers. Those who are leaving school for the final time face an uncertain future with the job market the way it is. However, things usually work cwt. In closing, well quote a famous summer song of a few years ago. Don't worry, be happy. But, be careful. Have a safe and happy summer. The News Advertiser regularly uses V3& recycled newsprint To the editor, Almost six years ago, when we were about to buy a house in Ajax the real estate agent said, that having a property backing to the park is such an asset that we should be very glad to pay those extra few thousands. We were because we have a dog. Now I am not so sure anymore. My dog had to be attended by a vet when he cut his paw on the broken glass from a beer bottle. So I don't let him walk where I don't check first. My neighbor jokingly calls me a -bag lady" as I constantly pick up the glass, garbage and some 'doggie left- over', left behind by irresponsible dog owners. We are not a very responsible bunch, are we? This is all called responsibility, as I was taught by my old principal -teacher in whose school I bet, some of today's children would not survive a month. I did. Many years, and I think only because of her and my mother's teachings, I managed years in the so called 'East block country', in a camp for political refugees. The first years I spent in Canada the words welfare and subsidized housing were unknown. At least to us. Going back to my teacher I still remember and hear her words.. "Barbara, you are responsible in full for yourself and your actions and in some part of the world that is around you. Always do your part ...... Couldn't we all? Is that so hard? And how can we expect our children to be responsible if we, adults are not? I know the garbage left behind in our little Kinsmen park doesn't seem all that important, but I believe, that if we deal properly and responsibly with those unimportant and small matters, the big ones look easier too. I wanted to do better," Exeter High School student Alan Thrasher says of a fifth -place finish in the 20 -kilometre race and a seventh in the five -kilometre event against about 10 other cyclists with cerebral palsy at the world championships in Belgium. Though the Whitby resident had hoped to improve his times there to qualify for the Paralympics in Atlanta in 1996, "1 still have a chance to get there." Coach and Exeter teacher Karen Briard, who accompanied Thrasher to Belgium, is confident the 19 -year-old can reach his goal. "It was good for Alan to see what competition is all about, who's out there and what training is required," she says. "He has two more years of training and has youth on his side. With the right training, he should do well." On the advice of other athletes be met in Belgium. Thrasher plans to get a lighter bike and train with able-bodied cyclists to gain experience in "pack riding". Meanwhile, Thrasher admits being "inspired" by other athletes, including an amputee who lost a leg and an arm and cycled without prosthetics. "It takes a lot of strength and balance to cycle like that. It amazed me how fast be was going." After an accomplished track-and-field career, Thrasher, who was told he'd likely be confined to a wheelchair, picked up a bike for the first time one -and -a -half years ago. He qualified for the Belgium contest during his first cycling competition in Tampa Bay last October, when he collected a gold and two bronze medals. Thrasher thanks Durham Regional Police and other sponsors who helped him raise $2,500 to compete in Belgium. "I'd like to thank all my sponsors who helped me get there ... This gives them the versatility they need to find their own kind of stele because theN already know what's out there. But the main influence comes from something closer to home. "We are influenced by each other.- says Kemp. This versatility is in their playing ability too. Normally Kemp sings, Kevin -Crash- Craddock plays guitar. Jeremy Stella plays drums, and Brad Stella plays bass. But it goes way beyond that. "All the guys can sing, play guitar and keyboards," says Pa liner. Being members of the independent scene in Toronto they feel that there is a need for more support among the bands. Brad says that he buys independent albums even if he doesn't like the band just to help them out The band's record collection has more independent albums than it does signed bands. The self -tided CD is out and is available at HMV in Toronto, Dube Hair Satin, Disks and Dats, Sam the Record Man and at all the live shows. The CDs cost $10 at shows and will be slightly higher priced in stores. Their show on June 4 at Coconutz was supposed to be the CD release party but because of a manufacturer's delay the party will probably be held at a club in Toronto. Future plans for the band are to play more club gigs to promote the new CD, have somewhat of a cross -Canadian tour begin in late summer, and maybe shop around for a re=cord deal. For more information on Sister Kaos or for a CD call Sarah Barker at 427-6918 or 330-1205. 1'cr iider 200 N1t>,11h. AT PICKERING HYUNDAI NOW!! A great many children, not to mention young adults, are flocking to Futurekids computer centres, eager to acquire critical computer skills that hold the promise of success in the next century. The Pickering -based centre has enjoyed much success, offering an exciting, challenging and enjoyable computer learning environment. Courses include, among others, Windows, Dos, Keyboarding, Computer -Assisted Math, Desktop Publishing, Problem Solving and Creativity. New courses available for teens and adults include WordPerfect 6.0, Lotus 1-2-3, Qbasic/Basic course for children from age 10. And there's much more. Futurekids is hosting an information session next Wednesday, and those interested in learning more about the centre's programs are invited to attend this Open House. Renowned for its well-trained instructors, state-of-the-art technology and cutting edge curriculum, the local Futurekids has gained much support this past year alone. The success of Futurekids is largely due to its foresight. Capitalizing on the fact that by the year 2010 computing skills will be a prerequisite for virtually every job in North America, Futurekids forged ahead in the field of computer education. Its unique approach teaches children not merely how to use a computer, but more importantly, how to integrate its use into everyday learning activities; how the computer serves as a tool for collecting and analyzing information, for daily writing and for problem solving. Small classes allow for individualized instruction without sacrificing the invaluable dimension of group dynamics. The Futurekids philosophy is that kids learn best when they're having fun; when PICKWAY TRANSPORTATION 9054204574 Private transportation for your precious little ones Door-to-dom service and gip *bps Service available to Mootessod learning Centres, and Blaisdalc Montessori Schools in Pickering and Ajax Ages 18 mob. & up Also Public Sebools, Day Care Cao m . and Nursery Scbool Programs in the Pickering arca they are motivated and excited, they are more likely to become independent learners. The Futurekids philosophy fosters a team approach to learning. Computer mastery is the focus of the Futurekids philosophy. By making computer instruction fun, the learning centre helps children learn to love learning. The curriculum is carefully designed for each age level -- from letter shape and recognition to robotics. As well, the curriculum is split into theme -based course modules. (063094) Summer's coming. Pet Sitters Etc. cares Summer's coming. If you're planning to go away, for just one day or a long time, there are likely lots of loose ends to tie up: who'll put out the garbage, if need be; who'll bring in the mail and newspapers, and how will the home maintain a `lived-in look?' You'll need your curtains to be open and shut periodically, lights to be turned on and off. If you have a pet, there's concern about that, too. Many pet owners are preferring to keep their pet at home and have somcone come in to care for the pet, whether it be a dog, cat, bird, or other exotic animal. For all of these needs, that's where Pet Sitters Etc. comes in. Erica Brown -Dunn started Pet Sitters Etc. out of her own need for solving the problem of taking care of her pet. She understands fully that when people decide to go away for the summer, special arrangements for that `extra family member' must be made. It isn't always possible to get a neighbor or relative to do the job; and besides, you might not want too many of your neighbors knowing that you're away. During the last eight years, Erica and her animal - loving staff of Judi, Kim, Doris, Maxine, Terri and Eric have cared for just about every type of animal and have built a solid reputation for consistent and quality care. A consultation enables the sitter and pet to meet, and for the exact care to be determined. Information is recorded about the pet's habits, their likes and dislikes, what times the sitter should arrive, exercise and feeding routines. A service sheet and contract are drawn up. Another aspect of Pet Sitter's function, if required, is to make sure the house looks lived in: open and close the blinds and drapes, install a light timer, take in the mail and newspapers, water plants.... The sitter will do whatever is necessary. We can also provide lawn care and snow removal - This is particularly comforting in instances where the family is away during winter months. As most homeowners know, insurance companies require that the house is regularly attended to, because in cold weather, s can freeze, or beating systems can we If a family is away for an extended period without having someone responsible for checking on the house and some type of crisis sbouM occur, the insurance company might not be liable for the damage. Unit IH Alot 905.663.8109 Besides this type of long-term assignment for the family going on holiday, Pet Sitters also offers a service for commuters who are away from home for extended hours each day. A Pet Sitters staff will take the dog for a walk, relieving the pet owner of the responsibility after work, or simply providing additional exercise for the dog. Pet Sitters Etc. charges on a per visit basis, not per pet, so often there is a real savings over kennel costs. There is no bother of pick-up or delivering your pet while you're away which is another advantage. When Erica first started her company in Durham, there was no other firm providing such a personalized service. Today, the mother of two still operates an independent business, not connected to any franchise. She believes strongly that keeping pets at home while the family goes on vacation, is "a nice alternative- for families to consider. Pet Sitters Etc. is a locally owned and operated business, bonded and insured, and covers the area between Bowmanville to Pickering and the northern areas surrounding Port Perry. If you are a pet owner who could use this service at any time of year, and would like to know more specifics, call Erica at 433-2386 or 427-1681. tr JNmwEmsewa YStop Property mana1 ace SPedianst • Weed Control A Fertilization • lawn Insect Control • Grass cutting • Tree and Shrub Care • landscape design/constsuction L N 420-6089 a I: . "If a customer makes a request and it is early enough in the construction, we are only too happy to make the changes." That means a lot to the customer and it is reflect- ed by the high number of repeat customers and referrals Tormina receives. That dedication to workmanship and commitment to the customer is nothing new for Tormina Homes. Tony and Gino Lucchese have been in the home- building industry for over 35 years. Their approach to building a home was the same then as it is now. "Our policy has always been the same, whether it is a good time or a bad time," says Lucchese. "We try to build homes where people would be able to live comfortably and be proud to raise a family." The quality, value and pride is evident at Kelloryn Meadows, in Whitby. Tormina Homes has seen this part of town grow up and, over the past 17 years, has grown along with it. At Kelloryn Meadows, you find all single-family homes on 35-, 40- and 50 -foot lots. Home sizes range from 1,800- to over 3,500 -square feet. Prices start at $174,900. Some 45- and 55 -foot lots are also available. Present at the unveiling were (from left to right) regional coun- cillor Larry Hannah, Paul Halminen, local councillor John O'Toole, Hannu Halminen and Babe Brown, representing the Wilkins family. Ten years ago, Halminen Homes became the first major builder to plan a community in Courtice. Now, and close to 1,000 homes later, Halminen contin- ues to build the homes that people want. "We try to offer people a home that is attractive right from the lead -glass insert on the front entry doors," says Paul Halminen as he takes a walk through the brand new model at the builder's Fieldstone community. "Today's homebuyers are much more discerning and value conscious than ever before, so we to to offer the fea- tures that people will like and most often look for in a home." Those features include gas fireplaces, main -floor laundry rooms, oak kitchen cupboards, corner tubs and a landscap- ing package that includes interlock brick walkw ays. "Landscaping is an integral part of each and eery home that we build," Halminen says. "This helps to ensure consistency in the overall appearance of the neighborhood.' At Fieldstone, people find a complete community with a full range of homes — from townhouses to single-family homes on _50 -foot lots. Prices start at S129,990. The most appealing feature of the homes in Fieldstone is Halminen's uncompromising commit- ment to building attractively designed homes with quality craftsmanship in a community that blends the best of the country living with the convenience of the city just minutes away. "Whether it is one of the smallest or our biggest home, we don't cut cor- ners,'• Halminen says. "We believe qual- ity is important in every home." At Fieldstone, you also get to choose from one of the great packages being offered as grand opening specials. You can opt for central air conditioning or take the five appliances or choose the built-in audio system or use $3,000 to upgrade and customize your home. The most unique of those packages is the built-in audio system, something which is often found only in much larg- er estate homes. The built-in audio sys- tem allows the homeowner to enjoy high-fidelity sound throughout the home in the rooms desired. Also on display at the model home is a home theatre system that includes five built-in speakers to create a surround - sound environment. Describing what the system, doesn't do it justice. Visit the Fieldstone model home for the full experience. To visit the sales office and model homes, take Hwy. 2 to Trull's Rd. and proceed south on Trull's Rd. to the site. Village of Brooklin turns back the clock Imagine if you could turn back the clock to the 1840's and move to a quaint village nestled in the picturesque Ontario countryside. if you are having difficulty picturing it in your mind, why not take a short drive to Brooklin. It is here that Tribute Corporation has introduced the Village of Brooklin, a new development where you can take a walk along picturesque parks featuring gaze- bos, gardens and cobblestone walkways. It all starts when you pass through the dis- tinctive landscaped entry treatment and drive along streets lined with trees and Period lighting and other historical details. This new community, which will even- tually be home to over 1.000 families, was introduced to the public recently by Tribute and developer the Sorhara Group. This new community is themed in the tradition of Ontario's architectural her- itage. Homes reflect the rich detail popu- lar in the 1800s. Homes in the Village of Brooklin will be like no others. Outside, there are the porches which wraparound the home, gingerbread detail- ing and driveways with garages at the rear of the lot. In short, the elegant Victorian - style details which bring to mind the neighborhoods of yesterday. Inside the homes, the atmosphere is quite different. Floorplans are bright and spacious and all the comfort features today's homeowners look for can be found in these homes. Kitchens feature all of today's conveniences, like plenty of cupboard space, double stainless-steel sinks. dishwasher rough -ins and more. Bathrooms are luxurious with features like oval tubs in the en suite and locking medicine cabinet or drawers. Other home features include interlock- ing or paved driveways leading to double - car garages, picture windows, ceramic tile flooring in all bathrooms, trimmed arch- w•ays with decorative corner block detail, gas fireplaces and a landscape package comprising of a mix of deciduous and ever- green trees and shrubs at the front of the lot. Homes range up in size from 1,629 square feet and sit on 40-, 45- or 50 -foot lots. Prices start at S 167,990. Of course, all homes feature the Tribute commitment to quality which has garnered the builder an Excellent rating from the Ontario New Home Warranty Program. So, why not turn back the clock' Take a drive to the Village of Brooklin, where bygone days and today's amenities come together to delight your senses. To visit the Village of Brooklin sales RETIREES SAVE $3000.00 PER YEAR Retired couples who no longer need to live in the city are moving out in large numbers and one of the reasons is that they can usually keep a larger portion of their retirement incomes. My clients report that they often save $2000.00 in taxes by mov- ing to Brighton (70 miles east of Toronto) and my calculations indicate that energy savings can reach another 51000.00 or more by moving into a new R-2000 home. This saving is enough to give a decent holiday in the south each year. Couple this benefit with the fact that the sale of a city home will often more than pay for a new, comfortable R-2000 home in Brighton. There are other very compelling reasons - fresh air, quietness, no traffic jams, and friendly neighbours. Gordon Tobey Developments lid. spe- cializes in R-2000 homes - designed for the Canadian climate. We provide a complete design service for homes that can start for as little as $134,900 or less on fully ser- viced 66' wide lots.
