Vet recalls
the day he'll
never forget

PICKERING — It's a day Jan
de Vries will never forget. June 6,
1944 — D -Day. Forever etched in
his memory.
In fact, the Second World War
veteran can find the exact location
where 50 years ago he spent so
many hours hunkered down in a
two -foot wide slit trench waiting
for tate Germans to attack.
You don't forget something
like that," says the Pickering
resident, one of many vets
returning to Normandy. "The
area hasn't changed that much.
It's still a farm area. The same
field is there, the same farmhouse
across the road. The cow shed still
has bullet holes."

special report examining teacher morale in the 190s. The
next looks at the need for school administrators to admit
violence exists and the effects of cutbacks on the
classroom.

As they count down the weeks till summer break, about a
dozen secondary teachers shared with the News Advertiser
Weir experiences in today's classrooms on the condition their
real names aren't used and the -schools at which they teach
aren't named.
"We have too many roles to play,- notes one.
"We're like surrogate parents," adds another.
"Schools don't create problems. They're just a reflection
of society, but teachers are expected to solve all the
ptnbleats." sums up Neil, a 20 -year teachitog veteran.
"When I went to school, my bigger worry was getting
my homework done," he explains. 'Today, social agencies
cane in at the begmiung of the school year to diisevss AIDS,
" drug abuse, smoking, teen pregnancy and physes abuse."
-,kXi "Their lives are definitely more complicated than our

Though teachers recognize the difficulties faced by
students today, they're equally aware that the social climate
at many schools affects Weir morale — which is already
sagging from government cutbacks and increased demands
in the classroom.
"Kids are coming to school with fewer social skills,
notes Neil. "You can be in the middle of teaching a lesson

Much of the blame falls squarely
on the shoulders of parents, believe
some teachers.
"There's not enough parental
supervision at home," reports Pam, a
guidance teacher who receives
several phone calls a week from
parents reporting problems with their
children at home. "They expect
schools to discipline them, but how
many kids can a teacher be
responsible for?
"Some (students) come in with an
attitude, a chip on their shoulder.
They feel we owe them and tell us
they're paying the taxes that pay for
our salaries. There's a big lack of
respect from a lot of them"
"I've experienced unbelievable
rudeness," echoes Barbara, a teacher
who was ready to thrown in the
towel earlier this year after 15 years
in the classroom.
"In all those years, I had sent
probably only two kids to the office.
This year, I'm sending someone to
the office almost every day. All I'm
getting is abuse," she says, admitting
some students are so difficult "I pray
every day they're not there.-

Health care in Durham Region is on the brink of major change,
and it's going to affect you and your family.
The rising costs of medical services has prompted the Durham
Region District Health Council to launch an acute-care study, and the
recommendations from that study are now ready for your considera-
tion. A series of public meetings are scheduled to allow residents'
input into the proposals, and it's important that you at least familiar-
ize yourself with them and give the issue some thought.
If the proposals are adopted, some Durham hospitals will be
downsized while Whitby General will become a regional centre
offering rehabilitation services. For general medical care, Durham
patients will travel to either Ajax -Pickering General Hospital or
Oshawa General Hospital.
The impact of these changes will hit home when you need medical
care and find out your neighborhood hospital is no longer the facility
that offers the services you need. The time to make your opinion
known is now.

Knights celebrate
AJAX - The Ajax Knights of Columbus council is celebrating its 25th
anniversary and some charitable events are planned to mark the
occasion.
St. Francis de Sales Council 6161 of the Knights of Columbus is
celebrating the anniversary on Saturday, June 11, by taking part in the
Pickering Village Festival and holding a dinner and dance at the
Annandale Golf and Curling Club.
Club spokesman Anthony Allevato says members will run crown and
anchor gambling games during the festival and have a float in the
CCrorown and anchor games will be run next to the Pickering Village
Food Town store on Old Kingston Rd. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and
proceeds will go to the Ajax and Pickering General Hospital. Players
must be 18 years old to participate.
The dinner and dance will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Annandale and tickets
are $25 per person. Proceeds will go to the many charities aided by the
Knights of Columbus.
The St. Francis de Sales council has 85 members and is the only
council in Ajax.
Tickets for the dinner/dance can be bought by calling Mr. Allevato at

Ten years ago, Lucinda Bassett
was a hostage to her own anxieties.
Constantly worried about her health
and her state of mind, she found
herself avoiding situations that
made her feel anxious such as driv-
ing, flying and socializing. Anxiety
disorder is the number one emo-
tional problem in our country today.
Bassett will share her story and
provide coping skills at seminars
scheduled throughout the Toronto
area this week.
Symptoms for anxiety disorder
include heart palpitations, dizzi-
ness. stomach problems, feelings of
bewilderment and confusion, scary
thoughts and nervous or panicky
feelings, many people with anxiety
experience mitral valve prolapse.
Generally people fear what Bassett
calls, "losing control", having a
heart attack, embarrassing them-
selves, or losing their minds.
"People get in trouble when they
over -react and over -analyze things,
says Bassett. These people tend to be
perfectionistic worriers who upset
themselves with their own thought
and concerns. They actually terse
their own anxiety and this they can
!corn to control."
Bassen, who 0 medication free,
refers to herself as "completely
recovered" and travels the country
presenting seminars to such com-
panies as Chrysler, AT&T and
McDonald's. She has been featured
on OPRAH, REGIS and KATHY
LEE and many other shows.

It would be impolite not to thank someone for
something nice that was done for you.
So, when is the last time you thanked a veteran for his
or her involvement in liberating the world'?
If you've never done it, if you've never thought about
it, there's no time like tomorrow. For, 50 years ago on
June 6, close to 10.000 Canadians took part in what was
to be the greatest assault on Adolf Hitler's terror.
The following is an abbreviated version of an account
of D-Dav published as an editorial in the July 4, 1944
edition of The Commando, the monthly newsletter for the
employees at Pickering Works of Defence Industries
Limited (DIL) in Ajax.
'We wonder how these men felt and what they thought
about, as their various crafts plowed through the choppy
waters toward the concrete gun pits and machine gun
nets that crouched, waiting like a flock of vultures on
the French beach. Did they think of home and their
loved ones, or only of the task before them, a task at
which they dare not fail, for failure meant defeat?
Not once did our men look back. They met the best
troops and the best equipment that the Germans could
throw against them, but always they went forward.
Villages and populated places fell in rapid succession to
the Allied drive and overjoyed French townsfolk
flocked to greet their liberators.
With all these men willing, if need be, to sacrifice
their lives to preserve 'our way of life'. can we do any
less than support them in every way we knowT
It's been 50 years since this editorial asked for
support for those who fought.
While most Canadians don't remember their veterans
as often as they should, we want them to know, they'll
never be forgotten.

town council and the mayor towards
preservation of heritage sites and
manure trees. I am referring directly
to the 1993 demolition of the 19th
century, fieldstone Bryant house that
stood near the present site of the
Costco warehouse.
My concern is no so much that
this 150 -year-old house was
demolished, but why it was
demolished. The facts unfolded as
such when a neared the time for
ground breaking for the Costco
building, the developer requested
that the Bryant house be removed,
as it would stand too close to the
future site of the warehouse
entrance.
That was a justifiable concern on
behalf of the Costco people. But
why in heaven's name would our
town council wait until the eleventh
hour to discuss the future of this
building? A much more responsible
approach for town council would be
to demand site inventories of future
developments, long before
blueprints are approved. Before we
invite developers to our town, we
should know what we want
protected and saved. It should not be
a discussion mere weeks before
ground breaking is to occur and
after labcw intensive plans and
designs have been approved. We
treed a town council that will
represent local interests and address
these issues up front with
developers.
In closing, let me say that the:
historical significance of the house
was not the issue. It was the lack of
planning and concern on the pan of
town council and the. mayor.

So we realized the other day as we were flipping
through the latest edition of the News Advertiser.
The newest feature, Infosource, opens up a whole new
world to readers with touch-tone or push-button phones.

Canadian Liver Foundation. Which could come in handy
for us when our current argan finally gives in to the abuse.
Or you can air your opinion on the topical issue of the
day: "Do you think head coverings worn for religious
purposes should be allowed in Legion halls?" We have no
problem with turbans or yarmulkes in Legion halls. But,
those pickled eggs just gotta go.
Readers can even get their pet peeves off their chest by
calling the What's your beef? line. Personally, we don't
have any; we're vegetarian, you see.
And, you can call for the joke of the day if you need a
pick-me-up. We're more interested in a pick-up. And,
we're not talking trucks.
Alas, there is no dial -a-dominatrix line listed in
Infosource.
But, flip the page and there's the News Advertiser's
Sincerely Yours feature. Full of "active", "sweet", "kind",
"affectionate", "warm", "pretty", "loving" and "sincere"
women tired of looking for love in all the wrong places.
•1eez, we don't remember anyone fitting any of those
descriptions ever being at our place. Now, they've turned
their search for soulmates to the newspaper. Like "Angel
looking for Mr. Right to dip my wings. Do you have the
right pair of scissors?" Much better than "Shrew looking
for man to clip off his thing. I have a large collection of
knives. Lorena."
Problem is, we can't access Infosotuce or Sincerely
Yours. We're a little slow at merging onto ibe information
highway. We still have a black rotary dial phone.
But, if we were to advertise in Sincerely Yours, this is
how our notice would read, keeping in mind that one has
to be sincere to get into Sincerely Yours. It's a rule.

DURHAM - A "high school
for adult students" celebrated its
10th anniversary recently.
People of all ages gathered at
Whitby's Iroquois Park to mark
the milestone of Durham
Alternative Secondary Education
(D.A.S.E.).
With a current enrolment of
673 full-time and part-time
students, the school's campuses
in Pickering and Oshawa offer a
variety of credit courses.
"We didn't think we would
get to come this far." says co-
ordinator Rosalie Krem. "But
we've just grown and grown over
the years. -
Peter Smith, who's worked for
10 years in sales, enrolled in
order to pursue a career in the
medical field. D.A.S.E. has
helped Mr. Smith upgrade and
he's hoping to attend Humber
College this fall.
"This has given me the
opportunity to get back into a
study routine," he says. "When
you're in the (workforce), you're
not hitting the books as much.-

Susan Jennings, a 32 -year-old
graduating this year, felt a more
complete education would allow
her to help her children progress.
And, "to get ahead in any kind of
career, (you) had to have your
Grade :2, and you had to get
some computer skills."
More importantly for Ms.
Jennings, D.A.S.E. gave her the
self-esteem she needed. "At first
I was really insecure, but the
people there have given me a lot
of confidence in myself."
The single mother will now
take a secretarial course at
Durham College.
For graduate Gerry Davidson,
with a husband nearing
retirement and children having
grown up. "it was just a per%onal
dream. I don't think education
stops at any particular time of
life."
She likes the school's adult -
orientation. "I certainly felt more
comfortable going to D.A.S.E.
than I would (have going into) an
actual high school setting"
April Leblanc, who attended
D.A.S.E. for four years, is also
grateful for the alternative to
high school. "With D.A.S.E.

She will soon take a university

accounting, and hopes to start a
career in the field.

study math and science at college
in a year and eventually begin a
new career as an electrician.

Mr. de Vries was only 20 at the time and
had been dropped from a bomber on to the
fields of northern France under cover of the
night on June 6, 1944. It is a day permanently
engraved in the memories of those still alive
among approximately 155,000 soldiers who
took piut in the Allied invasion of Europe. This
week, he and as many as 50,000 vetentns are
retuming to Normandy to celebrate the 50th
anniversary of the Allied landing.
There will be joy as they celebrate their
success in taping the beaches and eventually
pushing the Germans back across Europe.
There will be sorrow as they visit the graves of
the ones who didn't make it. And there will be
wonder at how thev themselves survived.
While training for the invasion, recalls Mr.
de Vries, there was always the feeling that you
weren't quite ready yet_ There was a sense that
there was more you needed to know and do
before taking on such an enormous and
momentous task.
"You wondered how you would stand up to
what was coming."
Nothing he went through in training would
fully prepare him for the battle experience: of
actually hearing bullets whiz past your head
and feeling the shock of the shells exploding
around you.
You become very alert to what's going on
about you and you grow up very fast.-

ast"Right from the start of D -Day, things did
not go as planned for the First Canadian
Parachute Battalion's C Company. to which
Mr. de Vries belonged. The Usodian battalion
D-DAY

was attached to the British Sixth Airbome
Division, whose job it was to put up and secure
a defensive line on the east flank of the
invasion zone between the Allies landing on
the beach and the Nazis. C Company's task
was to secure the drop zone for the nNt of the
battalion and capture the Ck-mrtan headquarters.
Mr. de Vries and his comrades took off
from England shortly before midnight. But the
bombe- from which they were to parachute on
to the French coast veered off course to avoid
Gennan anti-aircraft fire. and many of the 120
men in the company ended up being scattered
as many as 20 miles from the drop zone.
We were so far away from when: we were
supposed to be. we had no idea where we
were..
Mr. de Vries' group landed about six miles
from the drop zone. The paratroopers had to
grope their way through the dark along hedges
and roads and through areas flooded by the
Germans to drown the landing forces. They
finally got their bearings around daybreak
when they found the larding area for the Allied
gliders.
"We made our way as fast as possible to the
area where we were supposed to dig in a
defensive position," he recalls. They finally
arrived in late afternoon, having dodged
German bullets along the way. The next day
the real battles with the Nazi troops began.
The First Canadian Airborne spent about
two months fighting the Germans in Nor muidy
and began pwparatio ns to advance towards the
Seine. On Aug. 7, just a day before the
scheduled advance. Mr. de Vries was hit in the
shoulder by sniper fie.
"It was quite a surprise. It was like
somebody hitting you with a baseball bat and
sending you flying."
The force of the bullet knocked him against
the back of the trench and numbed his
shoo ldr.'r. Ile didn't realize what had happened
until he- saw his blood flowing on the ground.
Mr. de Vries was taken to hospital in
England and recovered in time to rejoin his
battalion and participate in the Battle of the
Bulge in the Ardennes in Belgium that
September. From there he went to help hold a
defensive line in Holland until February. On
March 24, he and his comrades were dropped
over the Rhine.
"We fought all the way across Germany
until we met the Russians across the Elbe
River."
During the advance, Mr. de Vries had to
cope with what he thinks was "some kind of
barnyard infection" that left both his ankles so
swollen he couldn't get his boots on. So he cut
the heels off a pair of dress shoes and laced
them over his feet.

When the war ended, he spent about three
weeks in a Belgian hospital recovering from
the infection and missed going back to Canaria
with his battalion. He stayed in England on
various duties until February of 1946.
Mr. de Vries has been back to Normandy
several times since the war. This 50th
anniversary visit will be special, but he is
worried Canadians will soon return to their
apathetic attitude toward the contribution of the
country's own soldiers.
"There's no enthusiasm," he says. "The
public couldn't rare less. As soon as this little
parade goes by, they'll forget again."
Many don't realize Canadians had some of
the toughest fighting to do, notes Mr. de Vries,
and don't know the country had almost a
million people in uniform. He believes young
people especially should be taught more about
Canada's contribution to the war effort.
"I•bey've got a lot to be proud of. Canada
had lots of war heroes, but we know more
about American war heroes."
