The latest victim is Tom. a cat belonging to a woman on motber's allowance who now has to pay the $661 it cost to have Tom's injured leg amputated. Durham Regional Police sa, he entered the Petro Canada station on Harwood A\ e. S. around 7:40 p.m. He approached the attendant and "just asked for money", say police. "We would have more (of) the professionals who come in here and try to work the mall." In fact, he notes, mane professionals who come from the Torcnto shopping centres to "work" the PTC ultimately get caught here because they underestimate security at what thev see as a small-town mall. Shoplifters often get caught. says Mr. Lindo, when they become too greedy and try to take too much. Often, he adds. they are sent to stores by third parties who pay them to steal specific items. The problem of shoptheft is not going away. but retailers are definitely fiehtin_ back. There are a variety of new systems that are available for shop owners. The most common are electronic sensor devices that are affixed to a product to alert staff of a possible theft. According to Mr. Fruitman, employee theft represents about one-third of shoptheft. Smaller organizations feel there is more customer theft while larger organizations think it's more balanced." Mr. Fruitman explains. "The larger organizations are a little more accurate on its assessment." Children! Otitis media is the most trequently diagnosed illness in children between birth and three year, of age. In fact, family physicians have reported that the first reason parents bring their children in are due to the common cold; the second most prevalent reason is middle ear infections. Research has shown that two thirds of all children have a least one ear infection by age three and one third have three or more ear intcx-tions. What is Otitis Media? Fluid in the middle ear. The eustachian tube, a tiny passagewav between the middle car and the back of the throat, keeps air pre -,sure in the ear equal to the outside air pressure. The eustachian tube also lets unwanted fluid drain out of the middle ear. If the eustachian tube becomes inflamed or blocked from a cold, allergy or infection, it will not drain the fluid and the fluid may become infected. Should we be concerned about Otitis Media? Yes! The fluid, which is like water at first, may get as thick and sticky as glue if the ear is not treated. Also, infection could spread to the mastoid bone and eventually might involve the inner Ear. The fluid can also cause the eardrum to break open. That relieves the pressure which may relieve the pain. But heanng is impaired and drainage may be a continuing problem. There is the added danger of tissue growing into the Middle Ear and developing into a potentially dangerous false tumor called a Cholesteatoma. It is also known that if left untreated, middle ear pathology can lead to delayed speech and language as well as disturbances in auditory processing and subsequent problems with academic achievement, particularly in learning to read. Children can be disciplined not due to "bad" behaviour but because they are not hearing properly. Social and emotional problems can result if middle ear infections are left untreated. What should parents look for? The child may have ear pain and fever. However, pulling or scratching the ears, head banging, irritability, listlessness may all be signs of chronic and recurring fluid to the ear. Other signs include misunderstanding directions, wanting the television louder than usual, inconsistent listening behaviours. What can your Audiologist do to help? If a child presents with recurring ear infections or chronic middle car fluid, an Audiologist should become involved in the child's care. The AUDIOLOGIST can determine the type and degree of any associated hearing loss and can monitor the child's middle ear function through impedance measurements. Although the child's 'ear infection' may have cleared, the fluid may remain for months causing a fluctuating conductive hearing loss. In fact, research in 1985 revealed that: "70% of children treated by antibiotics had fluid remaining in the middle ear two inks following treatment, 40% after one month, 209' after two months and 10% after three months." The hearing impairment may go undetected if the child is not monitored by an AUDIOLOGIST. if the hearing loss does remain undetected and thus untreated, the child's speech and language development and academic performance can be seriously affected. Of course if the problem is recurrent,... recurrent testing is also required! To ensure adequate identification and follow-up of these children, a co-ordinated effort by parents, teachers, physicians, speech-language pathologists, audiologists, babysitters and grandmothers is mandatory'. It is the long weekend when those-wbo-have-cottages open them up for the season and the appropriate time for those - who -have -gardens to plant them. For many it's just an excuse to celebrate the spring. (After all, it's not known as May 2-4 weekend for nothing.) But we should remember the original cause of the celebration. You don't have to have a framed photo of the Queers on the wall of your living room and you may not even (gasp) believe in swearing allegiance to Liz during certain formal ceremonies. In short you don't have to be an avid monarchist -- or any kind of monarchist — to enjoy the whole concept of Queen Victoria's annual birthday parry. There is something attractive in a nostalgic kind of way about celebrating the birthday of a cranky and rather prudish, but majestic old Queen, long dead. There's also something kind of ironic about sending up great glorious fireworks displays into the air and imbibing (goodness!) quantities of drink (as some are wont to do) in honor of Queen Victoria — a rather prudish monarch who insisted on nxx esty in all things. A monarch who encouraged conformity to the requirements of good taste and social convention. A queen who insisted on putting skirts over tables to ever up the table legs, which were considered to be slightly vulgar representations of the female anatomy. In any rase, whether or not you are a loyal royal watcher, it wouldn't hurt to raise a glass of orange juice or some other tion -alcoholic beverage to her Majesty the Queen sometime this weekend. There were three particularly unsavory aspects to this decision. First was the postponement itself which ensues that our oversized riding's boundaries will remain unchanged into the next century. As From the editor's desk M M M M the third largest riding in Canada with a population fast approaching 200.000. our riding gets one vote in parliament. This contrasts sharply with the average Canadian riding consisting of approximately 90.000 constituents (although one is as small as 22,000) which also gets one vote. Effectively therefore, the individual Ontario Riding taxpayer wields less than 12 the power of taxpayers in other ridings while shouldering a heftier tax bill. Second, it was disturbing that the public's right to comment on the plan was taken away. An important pert of the redistribution process was to include public hearings during the month of April so that the committee's proposals could be fine- tuned to better reflect kxal concerns. Surprisingly, our own MP supported the government in its action even though our riding is desperately in need of redistribution and in spite of the fact that the redistribution process is constitutionally mandated. Finally, it was dismaying that the cancellation was hastily sped through parliament by invoking closeue on parliamentary debate. This effectively stifled any opposition MP's aitialsms of the government's self-serving move. As a result of these actions, old Liberal "safe" seats have been protected at the expense of parliamentary and public debate and equal representation for all Canadiaris. If you like my way, remember my name when it comes to electing a prime minister. If you don't like my ways, remember I'm just the managing editor at the News Adveniser and editorial -types never knew what they were talking about anyway. But please, keep reading and buying the paper. I don't want my opinions to cost me my job. 1) On the issue of same sex benefits. No, no no. I'm heterosexual. I was born that way. I can't help it Nothing I do will ever change that Being born heterosexual doesn't give me special priority. In fact, it discriminates against me. I'm the victim of nosy people who ask why I don't have children. Because I'm childless, I also pay more tax. 2) On the issue of French needs in Durham with respect to schools. The Province just gave the green light for the Durham Board of Education to determine whether a French school board is needed here. Pardon me while I have a good laugh, and then maybe a good cry. Take the cash and re -instate something that was slashed during budget cut. Canadians are fed up with bilingualism and its cost. School boards are crumbling under cutbacks. If the French want their own board they can pay for it with Weir own tax dollars. 3) Warm sunny days. While in my office on a warm day I wish I had the brains of whoever planned the Ajax waterfront. Thank you a million times. It's one of the few towns that saved its waterfront for its people and I make use of it on my lunch buff. 4) On gun amnesties. Great idea. They should be held all the time. Unfatunately, the real scum that we causing all the problems don't often give up their gusts at amnesties. Let's have a criminal amnesty. Take the case of your most hated criminal. Call your MP and tell him or her you'll be watching to see how long it takes before the slug is beck on the street. Give a shout to the immigration department. Ask how manly decent citizens have been refused entry to our multicultural country this month. Then ask how many with shady pasts have had the welcome mat put out for Ihem. Take a guess at what group got in. 5) On Lucien Bouchard. Won't some large Quebec company offer him a huge -paying job in exchange for him quitting politics? We've already got Bob Rae to embarrass us internationally, we don't treed Bouchard. 6) On writing this column before the long weekend. Doris Madder, representing residents of a seniors' apartment complex on St. Martin's Dr., said poor bus service is making it difficult for the elderly to get to doctors' appointments and community centres. She said many are staying in their homes because recent route changes have put bus stops in places that are too far away for them to walk to and those who do venture out often encounter all kinds of transit obstacles. Mrs. Madder noted. for example, that seniors from her building have a bus shelter on the south side of Radom St. that they can use for protection from harsh weather, but the bus they have to take stops on the north side so they have difficulty trying to get across the street in time to catch it. Roy Charlton, representing residents of a seniors' apartment complex on Foxglove Ave., said the bus stop closest to the building is too far for many elders. He also maintained the present route system makes it difficult for seniors to get to the GO station because they have to get there via the Pickering Town Centre. Ile suggested all buses south of Hwy. 401 should stop at the GO station before going to the centre. Durham College's Continuous Learning Division is offering a CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) Basic Rescuer course. Participants will learn to recognize respiratory/cardiac arrest, how to start immediate emergency procedure when cardiac arrest occurs, how to access the emergency medical system and what to do until help arrives. The past campaign was arguably the worst ever in the 20 -year history of the club_ After a disastrous start which saw the squad blown out of most games. Panthers' owner Bill Barber fired head coach Brad Ryder and general manager Jim Bricknell and replaced them with former bench general Bud PANTHERS Metro Junior Hockey Club Bower, who took the reins of coach and general manager in mid-season. After a major overhaul of the rookie -laden roster. Bower was able to bring some stability to the Panthers, although they finished with a losing record and placed dead last in the league's Bauer Division. The Panthers' brain trust of Barber, director and team manager Tim Wheeler and Bower are determined to return the club to respectability. "We want to bring the team back to the winning years of the early '80s," says Barber. "I think we've got the right people in the right jobs now. "The Pickering Panthers have a 20 -year history and a lot of good history in junior hockey. We want to make sure that (a repeat of last year's disaster) doesn't happen again." The new season started in earnest for the Panthers with the team's rookie camp .%high ended at the Pickerini +tion season program is a goaltender evaluation camp at the Pickering Recreation Complex in early June. The club has sent invitations to midget -aged netminders in Durham and Toronto. Six will likely be asked back to the main camp. The Panthers' main training camp at the complex will be sprea(.l over two sessions — the fir t hated for Aug. 15 to 19 and -i,1 :dug. 22 to 25. About players will attend _ach camp. The roster will ncn he cut to a core of players, along with affiliate players ho will be dispatched to the Panthers' Junior C' affiliate or to a local midget or lu,,enile club. All 40 Panthers layers will undergo a conditioning camp in Madoc. Ontario from Aug. 27 to Sept. 3. The week-long camp will feature three hours of ice time, along with dry -land training, each day. It's also a chance to bring the players together prior to the exhibition season through early and mid- September. Barber feels the coming season will yield markedly different results from the last one. He notes 15 players from last season have committed to return to the club when it opens training camp in August. "We're going to have a great year. There are no excuses because it will happen," says Barber. Adds Bower: "We've developed enough players to form the basis of next year's club. Valley View Public School in Greenwood sent five grapplers to the event and all five returned with medals from the high-calibre competition which attracted 41 teams from across Canada, with some coming from as far away as Comerbrook, Newfoundland. Four provinces — Ontario, Quebec, P.E.I. and Newfoundland — were represented. "We were really pleased," says Valley View coach Chris Fockler. "All five of our wrestlers made finals, so we were really pleased with that." Natasha Boivert. 10, in her first .year of wrestling, was outstanding :n capturing the 45 -kilogram title in the bantam (13 and 14 -year-old) division. Incredibly, she regularly competes in the kids' division (ages 11 and 12) but, because of a lack of competition, moved into the higher bracket. Brian Zents, 14, struck gold in the bantam division. The Pickering resident pinned the competition en route to the title in the 85 -kilo weight class. Stephanie Murray, 13, earned the silver medal while wrestling at 45 kilos in the bantam girls' category. Nick Babiuk placed second in his 29 -kilo weight class in the kids' division. Steven Fetter, 10, competed in the kids' division and finished fourth overall at the 42 -kilo weight class. Nikki McKean was manager of the Valley View team at the Canada Fast meet. "There's always a demand for more, no matter how many you have.' Pickering currently has about 40 ball diamonds distributed over 22 parks from Claremont to the lakeshore. Of those, 33 are softball diamonds while the rest (with bigger infields and deeper outfields) are for baseball. The softball diamonds are used by some leagues for children's baseball. Thirteen diamonds have lights for night games. But they turn off automatically at 11 pm. because they're expensive to run and they're usually located in residential neighborhoods. There are two major children's leagues in town. The Pickering Softball Association has about 1,800 players up to 18 or 19 years old. The Pickering Baseball Association provides fun for 1,000 little leaguers, and would accommodate even more kids if there were more diamonds. Mr. Buntsma estimates there are six to 10 men's, women's and mixed slo-pitch leagues in town.
