So believes gay rights activist Tanya Gulliver, who fears a free vote allowing MPPs to cast ballots according to their consciences could bury the issue for years to come. -1 see a free vote as a compromise between (New Democratic Party caucus members) who don't want (same- sex benefits) and those who do," explains Ms. Gulliver, a member of the NDP's Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Committee and a Durham Board of Education trustee. Under the legislation. gays wanting to adopt children would no longer have to apply as an individual. but woulu De given the right to adopt as a couple. The legislation will be introduced at Queen's Park within the next few weeks. That time will be spent lobbying MPPs and -high-profile gays and lesbians," assures Ms. Gulliver. The bill already has the support of Durham West MPP Jim Wiseman, who defines the issue as one of "human rights. it,s a question of equity and a question of fairness." He believes gays and lesbians shouldn't be discriminated against because of a sexual orientation "they were born with. If they had a choice, they wouldn't choose something that causes them this much hardship." Further, Mr. Wiseman points to the Supreme Court of Canada which repeatedly strikes down Ontario laws on this issue because they oppose the Charter of Rights. But, since last August. the six - piece band is back playing locally as The Durham Sound, mixing rock 'n' roll from the '50s to the *90s with some blues favorites. The Durham Sound will appear at The Pro Team Sports Bar and Grill. Monarch Ave. and Clements Rd., Ajax. on Saturday. May 14 from 9 p -m. to I a -m. The band is made up of predominately local musicians. Darren Sachs, on guitar and vocals. hails from Ajax, while Paul Buchanan (guitar). Don Young (bass) and Liam Coleman (saxophone) make their hoaxs in Pickering. The remaining members, Kevin Doherty (drummer) and David Elton (keyboards), are Torontonians. In addition to making good music together, band members get along as people, notes Sachs. We're all the best of friends. We've spent the last eight to 10 years playing together, so when we play these gigs, it clicks because we're so used to playing together," says Sachs. Duggan's is a Canadian -owned and operated family business, with over 70 years expenence. Brothers Brad and M, I Lch Duggan. together with father George Duggan - a master drainman - operate the business. They have followed in the tradition of Brad and Mitch's grandfather Bill. But it was their great-grandfaLher, Gus, who really started the azdition. Today, with all the new construction in the Ajax - Pickering area, the expertise of the Duggan team is highly sought after. As Brad explains, the large number of new home consuwtion has created a larger -than -usual number of basements cracking within two or three years of construction. This in turn causes water to seep in. Locally, basements are constructed from poured concrete, which is unlike the concrete block construction of some communities. Brad says, "both types of construction need to be waterproofed in their own unique way." He adds also, '-IU only way to do waterproofing properly is firorn the outside." As anyone will tell you, the cause of cracking is due to the settling of the house. Cracks usually start at the weak point in a wall - such as by a window, for example. When cracks form, water gets through them. The solution, Brad says, is to have proper drainage, then to focus on the waterproofing. Doing the job from inside, as many companies are now doing, is not a long-term solution, according to Brad. He maintains, "It doesn't work from inside." PICKWAYTIRANSPORrATION Prim Volta I". Duggan's has a master drainage license via the Metro Licensing Commission. This is a status that few companies receive, but it does show the skill that Duggan's has in this area of work. Another form of assurance Brad gives is the fact that "We do the job properly the first time." Duggan's is often called to fix leaking and drainage problems that other companies were supposed to fix but didn't. With 70 years experience behind it, this firm has proven its credibility and reputation. It provides written warranties of up to 20 years. And even though it only stays in business because of successful completion of projects for customers, Brad, Mitch or George are always glad to advise a do-it-yourself homeowner on what needs to be done to ensure the successful completion of a job. Besides being drainage experts, Duggan's also provides exterior renovations service. This includes, among other things, eaystroughs, soffits, fascias, siding, rocifing, windows and doors. And you seldom have to wait. very long for an answer to any question. With a little humor thrown in, Brad says, "When you call us, a human being will nearly always answer." Duggan's is accessible 24 hours a day. Whether you want a particular job done, or you simply have a question you would like answered, don't hesitate to call. The number is (905) 686-0011. Consequently, more individuals are adjusting to more projects' - jobs managed from their home-based offices. In response to these offices of the 1990s. firms like Home Office Software in Pickering, arc finding that they, in turn, can be a wonderful support to these smaller enterprises. Home Office Software is a reiail store. But it also offers a number of other services, with emphasis on smaller operations. It provides a training centre for both the home-based and medium-sized fum that, due to restruocturing. require additional training support from time to time. This training centre accommodates groups of four to eight people at one time - While the training depends on the needs of the business involved, a typical training session for the beginner involves Introduction to Personal Computers. In this course, individuals learn about the computer parts, and how they relate to each other. The intent is to remove individuals, fears about computers. Introduction to DOS, followed by Introduction to Windows are the next recommended courses if the student is a novice. These are followed by the particular word processing, spreadsheet program, or other application relevant to the individual. 'Me introductory course costs S79. In addition, Home Office Software has a range of Nupport services that is invaluable to the smaller operations. 'F A4 I lvx, As Home Office Software president James StavroU Says, small business operators don't normally have the necessary resources that larger corporations readily have at thei'r disposal. -Very often. the small business operator has to perform multiple tasks." And this. Mr. Stavrou says. can become overwhelming. Which is where Home Office Software comes in. The store also sells hardware, accessories. office fumiEure, educational books and programs, assorted PC magazines, and high-end graphics software. You'll also find that computers are built on site at Home Office Software - a service which provides the consumer with brand new. yet low cost machines. 'Me facility can best be described as a "uscr-friendly environment. offering the highest quality service," according to Mr. Stavrou, who has been involved in programming operations and systems design for the past 15 yews. Mr. Stavrou reflects on a time when the PC was considered a toy. That was in the early 1980s. Then. mainframes were the computers of the day, until the likes of Atari and Commodore were introduced. These machines, he recalls. were -big on games.- Soon after, someone had the idea that, they could be used for business. Mr. Stavrou notes that PCs really made an impact in 1987-1988, -and now the 1990s we see their proliferation." If you have any computer-related question. Horne Office Software's staff will either have the answer, or will get the right answer for you, if it's not readily at their fingertips. The store is at 1099 Kingston Rd., Unit 5, in Pickering; (in the Furniture Mail, behind the Olive Garden Restaurant). Business oils are Mon. to Wed. 9:30 to 7 p.m., Thurs. and Fri. till 9 p.m., and Sat. 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Or you can call Mr. Stavrou at 837-5456.
