money is making its way into our
pocketbooks.
"It used to be, in the good old
days, that you would have to know
someone in the printing agency (to
make counterfeit money)," says Det.
Haze. "It took knowledge and skill.
Now it just takes someone to throw
it on a color copier."
Some of the funny money
appears to be brand new and other
bills are well worn. The money is

and $20 and 5100 Canadian bank
notes.
Most of the $1.0 and all of the
5100 denomination notes are being
produced by a bubble jet printer.
Inspection of the background
reveals the bogus bills are composed
of tiny nmulti-coiored dots instead of
e the proper printed background -
Also check the curved lines to the
left of the Queen's head, says Det.
Haze, because on a fake Canadian
bill the lines aren't as perfect as on
the real ones.
A common feature of the bills,
says Det. Haze, is that the paper
quality is not as good as real
currency, and red and blue security
fibres — normally present in bona
fide currency — have been
repnxhiced in the face of theme notes
by using ink.
If these blue or red fibres can be
lifted front the paper whale, then the
money is probably good. he says.
if
But the blue and red lines can be
removed by scratching. they are
probably mxhacical reproductions
of the security fibres.
Another way of weeding out a
phooey bill is by feeling its lextnue.
A number of counterfeit notes are
waxy and smooth while a real bill
has raised printing in several areas.
In addition, authentic Canadian
currency has green sills dots, called
planchettes, that can be removed
from the paper. Mechanical
reproductions of these green dots
will leave a printed dot on the top of
the paper that cart be removed from
the paper in one pixe.
Police have made arrests in eight
incidents of cousnterieit money singe

The most notorious was a bank

PICKERING - The local
conservation authority is
scrambling to put together a new
purchase deal to save a 1.5 -acre
portion of the Altona Forest after
Pickering council refused to foot
the entire bill for the parcel of land.
At their Tuesday night meeting,
councillors turned down a request
by the Metropolitan Toronto and
Region Conservation Authority
(MTRCA) for 5177500 from the
Town to buy the Cassel property
on the northwest side of the forest.
Approximately 53 hectares of
the Altona Forest west of Altona
Rd. between Sheppard Ave. and
Finch Ave. are designated for
protection from development.
Courncillors were told purchase
of the Cassel land had to be
completed the next day and the
MTRCA had no other source of
funding available to buy it. They
were also told that if the MTRCA
didn't buy the land the owner
could apply to the Ontario
Municipal Board in September to
develop it with medium -density
housing.

Durham to leave Brock West as the Region has

"It would be pretty pitiful if this was to die
here tonight and we're going to litigation to

As expected, the provincial budget handed down
Thursday was almost a non-event, with very little
substance. And, also as expected, area NDP politicians
were almost begging to comment on the budget while
special interest groups were busy faxing criticisms.
Business groups have been called the budget a "do-
nothing". "re-election" piece of "creative hokery
pokery accounting
However, Durham West MPP Jim Wiseman referred
to Floyd Laughren's blueprint as a "jobs budget."
He predicts 12,000 new jobs will be created now that
employers are exempt from paying the health tax for
the first year after hiring a worker.
Meanwhile. Ontario homebuilders lamented they're
being treated like "second-class citizens" and
automakers, including General Motors, complained
there was no elimination of the retail sales tax on
N chicle warranty work.
Putting aside the complaints and the rhetoric, there's
actually very little in the budget that will help
taxpayers or business owners. There are no new taxes
— that's almost a political given these days — and we
can applaud that.
However, we're still being taxed to death as it is and
staggering under a deficit that's either $8.5 billion or
:around $11 billion, depending on whether you believe
'he NDP or the opposition. Mr. Laughren says hell be
chipping away at the deficit but remember. Thursday's
nudget projects the deficit at $98.9 billion by 1995-96,
we're left with very little to comfort us, and that,
t ►o, was unfortunately expected from Queen's Park.
Different attitude toward dandelions
To the editor,
I'd like to pass along news of
a well-received environment
project that took place in the
tiny hamlet of Greenbank in
Donor of Earth Day 1994.
Five volunteers hand -
delivered a "Dear Neighbour"
letter to residents, asking them
to consider stopping the use of
pesticide sprays on lawns.
From the
editor's desk
 im; M M M
The letter includes 10 tips for
ecological lawn care and was
accompanied by a pamphlet
from the American Cancer
Society which states,
"WARNING: The use of
pesticides may be hazardous to
your health!" As well, each
resident was offered a free copy
of the booklet "The Organic
Approach to Home Gardening"
(multiple free copies of which
can be ordered from the
Ministry of Environment &
Energy in Toronto), an excellent
resource for those who want to
move away from the chemical
approach to lawn and garden
care.
It looks as though people are
finally realizing that it was
never actually the dandelions
that constituted the real problem
- it was our attitude towards
them that needed to change!
I'd be happy to pass along
copies of the letter used in this
project to anyone who is
interested.
People are welcome to give
me a call at (905) 985-3225.

For those who are too yang or too old to understand the

Well, stage fright didal cause me to lose my singing
voice, because I dont have ace. I tried singing in the shower
once and the water stopped.
Back a my story.
I arrived at Durham Regional Police 24 division station in
Ajax to serve on a pend of 10 people who were going to
discuss pdicng in the town. It well be used as the basis for a

the debate will be arced four times.
Anyone who knows Inspector John Hamilton at the
police station knows you'll be greeted with a great big

While Roger spoke, I clenched my teeth so the chattering

Two hours later we fmished. It was a good discussion, the
panel members were great and Insp. Hamilton should be
commended for his efforts in bringing policing back to the
community.
Have I forgiven Insp. Hamilton for putting me on the

AJAX-PICKERING - Dozens
of area residents have been
pitching in this past week to help
clean up the environment.
They're participating in
Ontario's annual Pitch -In Week,
which encourages groups to
collect garbage from roadsides,
parks and wilderness areas in
their communities.
Participants included the 9th
Ajax Beavers. whose 20
members cleaned up a wooded
area behind the Ajax Community
Centre. All garbage collected
was sorted at Lord Elgin Public
School, which recycled all
appropriate items.
About 40 students and three
teachers from Exeter High
School, also in Ajax, collected 40
bags of garbage from the banks
of Duffins Creek. They covered
about 13 kilometres.
In Pickering, some 80 students
and teachers from Durham
Alternative Secondary Education,
the public board's adult day
school, collected garbage from
its grounds on Hwy. 2.
Roland Michener Public
School in Ajax also took part in
Pitch -In Week, which began May
2 and runs until May 8.
The volunteer campaign saved
taxpayers $26 million in clean-up
costs last year, according to
Pitch -In Ontario.

Barter's becoming bigger business
By JOHN DUJAY
SPECIAL TO 7M NM ADVERMSER
DURHAM - Bartering is alive
and well in the Durham Region
businesscommunity.
In ancient times, barter was used
to trade goods or services. People
would trade a cow for example for
work done around the farm. Barter
pre -dates the use of money as a
system of commerce.
Once money was invented, this
type of trade was neglected as
people fell in love with coins and
paper money as a means of keeping
track of wealth. But bartering is back
in vogue.
Mike Hood owns International
Trade Service (ITS), a network of
almost 200 area businesses which
regularly trade goods or services
with one another.
"People should barter as much as
they can," he says. "More and more

"I wanted my now around with

Mr. Hood has a dream for his
company. He wants to see
everybody joining the barter system,
from housewives to the largest film.
In the future, be envisions "a point

"You can steal cash but you can't

By CHRIS BOVIE
DURHAM STAFF
- Depression can strike anyone at
any time.
It's an illness that is, and has been, perceived
as a personal weakness, but its destructive path
affects approximately three million Canadians
each year. Of that number, only one third will
seek help, according to the Durham Region
Mental Health Association. At the extreme end,
3,593 Canadians committed suicide in 1991.
Craig, 44, who went through three years of
counselling for depression, has managed to turn his
life around.
It was after his 20 -year marriage fell apart he
learned during marriage counselling that he had a
lo: of problems. He had become so tired of his life
that, he says, he was "hungry" for information. "I
was getting tired of going around in circles."
During counselling he found out his illness had a
long and complicated history.
Counselling "helped me to realize that I was a
depressed child and that the illness was in my family.
It took me 40 years to realize it. I told my counsellor
that I wasn't abused as a child, but I was neglected.
He told me that neglect is abuse.-
He
buse"He attended many 12 -step groups to deal with the
many demons that plagued him, including Alcoholics
Anonymous, and a group for co -dependants.
"I was extremely sensitive and took things
personally," Craig admits. "'Ibere were moments when
I suffered deep depression episodes. I got so low I
couldn't sleep or eat I had no sex drive or interest in
going out"
He says some members of his family, who suffer
from similar problems, have been very communicative
about his illness.
"1 talk to my sister and my mother, who was also in a
psychiatric hospital, and she is very supportive. My
brother doesn't share his feelings and my father's just
unapproachable --
For the many who suffer from depression, there's a
belief that exercise, vitamins. vacation or prayer will help
It's a falsehood that the Canadian Mental Health
Association (CMI [A) is trying to change.
The CMHA has launched a national awareness campaign
on depression in an attempt to help people recognize the
warning signs. Mental Health Week concludes May 8.
We want people to seek out information," says Arlie
Brayman, of the public education committee for the CMHA
in Durham Region. "'There's a lot of avenues they can take.
If you talk to your family doctor he can pass you on to the
right person:
iAlthough the medical field is learning more each day
about stress and depression, there is a real stigma
surrounding this illness.
"There is a perception out there," notes Mr. Brayman.
"Some people fear that if they tell their boss they're
suffering from depression that they will be perceived as
being weak."
It's not just a personal perception at times. Friends or
family may not detect a real problem exists. Common
responses are, "quit feeling sorry for yourself," or "shake it
off."
You can't shake depression off," warns Mr. Brayman.
"It requires professional help."
t Everyone has suffered from some form of a depressed
Istate, but it's when the symptoms persist for an extended
period of time that it becomes a major problem.
For example, if you were to lose your job, naturally some
sort of "low mood" would set in. But, if those feelings
persist for an extended period of time there is room for
concern, say experts.
Most people perceive the onslaught of depression being
triggered by some traumatic event, but the cause of the
illness is a topic of debate.
No one really knows the cause of depression," says Mr.
Brayman. "It's usually a result of a traumatic event like a
loss of job, but it can happen at any time. Sonne medical
opinions are that it's caused by a chemical imbalance."
Whatever the reason, the problem is a real concern as our
world becomes more stressful. It's an illness that can go
undetected, but won't go away by itself. For Craig, it's
something be will have to deal with for the rest of his life.
If someone hadn't educated him about depression, his fife
would have continued to spiral downwards, he believes.
"It's an illness I still have," Craig says. "I'm just not at
its mercy anymore."

Frenchman's Bay home
to country's best paddlers
By AL RP;ETT
PICKERING -The West Rouge
('anoe Club is set to begin
paddling on Frenchman's Bay in
;' (kering.
The Rouge River -based club,
or kayakers and flat -water
-anoeisls residing in the Pickering
.tnd Scarborough areas, recently
received approval from the Town
)f Pickering and the Metro Toronto
And Region Conservation
luthority to establish a temporary
gaining site at the western spit on
the south end of the bay.
Club commodore Bill Blair says
the facility will be used by national
canoe and kayak team members to
train throughout the summer. lie
feels Frenchman's Bay is perfect
V BASKETBALL
for these types of paddlers.
"The water of Frenchman's Bay
is ideal for our elite or high-
performance paddlers. It's a good
location for our national team
members as they need
a body of water
where they can
train for distance `1
and is calm. , t4'
We've been
interested in
Frenchman's Bay
for a long time."
Blair says about six members of
the national team — many of them
Pickering residents — as well as
12 to 15 up-and-coming provincial
and national -calibre athletes will
use the new facility.
He explains the club's home
base on the Rouge River in
Scarborough is unsuitable for its
top athletes. "'The Rouge River is
shallow and winding and it's not
conducive to what the higher-level
paddlers require"
The club is now in the process
of setting up the Pickering site. A
truck is currently serving as a
storage area for boats and athletes
have begun training on the bay this
week The club, in tandem with the
Pickering Kinsmen Club, is
looking to purchase a construction
office trailer to be used as a more
suitable boat storage site.
Blair notes the temporary
permit only lasts through this
summer. The club has applied for
consideration for a permanent
facility in Pickering.

Lila O'Neill, Audiologist and Director of the
Aja -Pickering Audiology Clinic notes numerous
changes in the field of Audiology. One of the most
noteworthy is the ALMOST INVISIBLE hearing
Aids. As one Peterborough Audiologist reported:
"Finally, contact lenses for your ears." The Starkey
Research and Technical Services Group has recently
developed a micro canal fitting technique marking a
new age in hearing aid fitting. The hearing aid is so
tiny and sits in the bony portion of the external ear
that the hearing aid is virtually INVISIBLE.
This exciting breakthrough development in
hearing aid technology delivers major benefits in
acoustic performance, wearer comfort and cosmetic
appeal to the hearing impaired. All these advantages
without surgery.
-Natural high fidelity sound quality.
• Better understanding in background noise.
-No wind noise or feedback.
•Eliminates unnatural voice complaint.
-Normal use of the telephone.
-Custom made, comfortable and easy to use.
-Virtually INVISIBLE to others when worn due to
deep position.
Who can be fitted? Many are potential candi-
dates for this procedure. Anyone whose ears have
stopped growing (adolescents, students and adults),
who have a mild to moderate hearing loss, and
whose ear canals are large enough.
Your Audiologist can tell you if you are a suit-
able candidate for the micro canal hearing aid and if
you qualify for the deep inserted procedure. There is
no pain and no anesthesia is required and only a lit-
tle time, the whole procedure is painless and only
takes 1 hour. Both ear canals should be free of wax
and it is important everyone sees their Doctor to
have wax removed.
As Ms. ONeill states: "Anvone who wants bet -

ter hearing qualifies for amplification but remember
a hearing aid is an aid, it will never bring your hear-
ing back to normal". Not all people are suited for the
deep inserted procedure. Standard hearing aids may
be more appropriate.
With the new sophisticated Class D circuitry,
increased sound quality and extended battery life
are a possibility. In -the -ear hearing aids or in -the -
canal hearing aids have improved to the point that
we can fit from a mild hearing loss to a moderately
severe hearing loss.

Lila O'Neill, Audiologist and Director of the
Aja -Pickering Audiology Clinic notes numerous
changes in the field of Audiology. One of the most
noteworthy is the ALMOST INVISIBLE hearing
Aids. As one Peterborough Audiologist reported:
"Finally, contact lenses for your ears." The Starkey
Research and Technical Services Group has recently
developed a micro canal fitting technique marking a
new age in hearing aid fitting. The hearing aid is so
tiny and sits in the bony portion of the external ear
that the hearing aid is virtually INVISIBLE.
This exciting breakthrough development in
hearing aid technology delivers major benefits in
acoustic performance, wearer comfort and cosmetic
appeal to the hearing impaired. All these advantages
without surgery.
-Natural high fidelity sound quality.
• Better understanding in background noise.
-No wind noise or feedback.
•Eliminates unnatural voice complaint.
-Normal use of the telephone.
-Custom made, comfortable and easy to use.
-Virtually INVISIBLE to others when worn due to
deep position.
Who can be fitted? Many are potential candi-
dates for this procedure. Anyone whose ears have
stopped growing (adolescents, students and adults),
who have a mild to moderate hearing loss, and
whose ear canals are large enough.
Your Audiologist can tell you if you are a suit-
able candidate for the micro canal hearing aid and if
you qualify for the deep inserted procedure. There is
no pain and no anesthesia is required and only a lit-
tle time, the whole procedure is painless and only
takes 1 hour. Both ear canals should be free of wax
and it is important everyone sees their Doctor to
have wax removed.
As Ms. ONeill states: "Anvone who wants bet -

ter hearing qualifies for amplification but remember
a hearing aid is an aid, it will never bring your hear-
ing back to normal". Not all people are suited for the
deep inserted procedure. Standard hearing aids may
be more appropriate.
With the new sophisticated Class D circuitry,
increased sound quality and extended battery life
are a possibility. In -the -ear hearing aids or in -the -
canal hearing aids have improved to the point that
we can fit from a mild hearing loss to a moderately
severe hearing loss.
