The plan would see one group of students at school all day Mondays and Wednesdays and every Friday morning. A second grou would attend class all day Tuesdays and Thursdays and every Friday afternoon. That schedule has been approved by the Durham Board of Education's program committee, but must still be endorsed by all trustees at their regular meeting Monday before being given the green light. Board chair Patricia Bowman believes that schedule meets the concerns of many parents by offering classes on the same days each week. It would also create less hassle if the board gets approval from the ministry of education and training to re -arrange the time traditionally spent in junior and senior kindergarten. Instead of spending one- half day for a full year in each, the board proposes to offer senior kindergarten classes for a full day on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and junior kindergarten for a full day on Tuesday and V POLICE BEAT Thursday. (The board must begin phasing in junior kindergarten at some schools beginning in January, the ministry has decided. It will be offered to all in 1997-98.) The board first examined all -day, alternate - Jay kindergarten in an effort to save local taxpayers $648,000 a year in noon -hour busing. It defends its decision to change the program at all schools, not just those which require busing, because busing zones can change from year to year. Under the proposed schedule, )on -hour busing would still be required on Fridays at an annual cost of $129,600. The board also plans to spend about $50,000 a year on lunch- hour supervision. The revamped kindergarten program has been criticized by some parents who fear youngsters will be unable to cope with a full day at school and will be confused by an alternate -day program. Others applaud the cost-saving measure, saying it will simplify day-care arrangements and be easier on children who would otherwise be bused to day- care centres for half the day. Meanwhile, the Ontario Provincial Police are still seeking witnesses to the fiery single -car mishap around 4 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of the 401 just east of Harwood Ave. Police have a "good idea" who the dead motorist is and how the accident happened, Whitby OPP detachment Constable Lorne Hunter says. But, because the driver's body was so badly burned, "It will take a few days to get a positive ID. We have to go through dental records," Const. Hunter adds. A post-mortem conducted Wednesday at the Centre for Forensic Science in Toronto determined the motorist was male. The accident happened when a 1994 Mazda hit a guardrail on the shoulder of the highway, then careened into a guardrail in the 401 median. Fire destroyed the car and badly burned the victim. The eastbound lanes of the 401 were closed most of Tuesday morning. Police continue to investigate. Witnesses can call the OPP at 668- 3388.
