In fact, some Pickering residents fear such a development will turn into a "planned ghetto" of subsidized housing. So said one Pickering woman speaking at a public information meeting on the future of Seaton lands at Pine Ridge Secondary School Tuesday. A recent report from the Region's planning department states the value of commercial building permits was up more than 108 per cent in '93 over 1992. "Activity in the private sector is beginning to pick-up as the economy recovers," the report notes. The "dramatic increase" in private sector non-residential (all development other than housing) building permit values "has a stimulating effect" on the region's economy and will help create jobs. Last year, $105.7 million in non-residential building permits • ' were issued in the Region, with private sector development accounting for $592 million. Almost half of non-residential • building permits went to renovations or additions and a "significant improvement" in the construction of new space, especially for industrial uses, "is not expected. The pn-,-&c sector is increasing productivity through investing in existing buildings and much of the demand for new space can be accommodated by the existing vacant built stock." While the private sector is building, the public sector isn't. The value of non-residential budding permits for private sector development was down almost 56 per cent last year. , In '93, the value of public sector non-residential building permits totaled 546.5 million, down from $105 million in 1992. He said Runnymede was preparing research for council that showed development of the lands (which might take 20 years) would directly create about 2,815 person-years of construction jobs, as well as about 1,500 person- years of related jobs. "I don't think for a minute that this process is going to change all that or rectify it in one fell swoop," said Mr. Ryan. Seaton Advisory Committee members responded that the current process of planning and public consultation on the lands is the best hope citizens have for the community in north Pickering to be developed in their interest. "The alternative is doing nothing and not moving forward." said committee member and Pickering mayor Wayne Arthur,,. He noted the committee is not looking for a "Utopian solution" but rather new ideas that can be used to build the best community possible on the site. The committee was appointed by the provincial government last fall to oversee the planning and consultation process on the fate of the Seaton lands and to determine whether it's feasible to build a new community there. The lands — bordered roughly by Hwy. 7. Brock Rd., the Third Concession and the Pickering - Scarborough border — were expropriated by the Province in 1972 for the purpose of building a community adjacent to an international airport proposed by the federal government and since shelved The size of the property has been reduced to 7,000 acres from 25,(XK) since the expropriation, and the population estimate for the new community has been downsized from 250,000 to a maximum of 90,000. Committee members include Mr. Arthurs, community group representatives, a local resident, a developer, and regional and provincial officials. The committee's general goal is to come up with a plan that protects agricultural and environmentally -sensitive lands, and allows for a compact community rather than contributing to suburban sprawl. Pickering officials, Queen's Park in 'heated' dump fight The EEII landfill site proposed for Pickering is located within the Seaton property, but committee members said they are proceeding with their studv on the premise that there'll be no dump. Mayor Arthur-, said the committee had a "heated argument" with the Province over the landfill issue, with Queen's Park finally backing down when Seaton committee members refused to include the dump in their plans. That leaves the committee planning for no landfill %•here there'll be one if it's approved after an environmental review. " I guess it does create something of an anomalv." said Durham West MPP Jim Wiseman. But he noted the Province can't work on the assumption there'll be a dump when EE I still needs environmental approval. MUMEAU8 Custom Cover Sale Siwe 30% on Sterling L h ols t Sofas from only $899! "They wouldn't be able to get anybody to sit on the committee who would bring to it the diversity of values that are there." People interested in having their say on Seaton can participate in either of three working sessions. A session on the environmental impact of Seaton will be held April 14 and 15, its economics and finance will be dealt with on April 28 and 29, and cultural and social aspects will be discussed May 12 and 13. Those who wish to participate are asked to call 416-314-0770. A community mini -conference on Seaton is scheduled for May 26, though no time and place have yet been set. A planning and design competition among consultants is being held to develop concepts for the Seaton community. The public will get to see the results in October. The advisory committee is to make its recommendations to the Province early in 1995. Call 683-511 0 with your news items. However, they recently had to wage war against the French government to keep the hotel rooms they'd reserved three years ago for the 50th anniversary of D- ray. But, politicians in France cancelled the vets' reservations to make room for American TV crews covering the event. While we're happy the Second World War veterans won this battle and got back their rooms, we feel it's a disgrace they even had to fight to preserve their reservations 50 years after they went to war to preserve democracy. It's ironic that those French government officials who originally turfed the veterans out of their hotel rooms owe their very jobs to the valiant efforts of the vets. Nothing should have stood in the way of those veterans reuniting with their colleagues to reminisce about the war and to remember their fallen comrades. We want the veterans to know that we're proud of you once again. We thank you for the job you did during the Second World War. Our country, our people, in- fact the entire free world are indebted to you. We praise you for again fighting the good fight this time for your right to be a part of the D -Day anniversary ceremonies as you had planned, as you had been invited to be. We hope all local veterans and their families who are attending D -Day celebrations have the time of their lives. After all, we owe our very lives to you. like to see is a new bill which People have gotten by until What I want to see is real fiscal simply says we the government of now with what we have, so let's responsibility at all levels of Canada will not during the next draw the line. "Don't send money," advises Durham Regional Police Staff Sergeant Sandy Ryrie. "A lot of people have already been taken in this scam." Over the past month, a Montreal-based company has been contacting local residents with a fast -talking pitch. Staff Sgt. Ryrie explains that the caller tells the victims that a vehicle — registered in their name — has been located in a warehouse in Montreal. All they have to do is pay the Goods and Services Tax, Provincial Sales Tax and shipping charges and the vehicle will be sent to them. Between Feb. 24 and March 9, a Clarington resident received phone calls from the Montreal warehouse telling her she may have won a Ford Aerostar van. The caller told the woman her name, address and telephone number had been located in the glove compartment of the vehicle that was left at the warehouse. She sent a certified cheque for $875 to cover GST, PST and shipping fees. She then got another phone call asking for a further $1,650. The woman again sent another certified cheque. A few days later, after getting another call asking for more money, she called police. An Oshawa businessman was contacted on March 24. He was told the warehouse had come into possession of a van due to a bankruptcy and it was registered in his name. The caller told the man a 1993 Ford Aerostar van would be turned over to him once $3,600 in PST, GST and shipping fees was paid. He immediately called police. "We want people to be aware of this type of fraud scam," says Staff Sgt. Ryrie. If you've been contacted by these scam artists, call police at 579-1520 or the Interprovincial Telecommunications Fraud Investigation unit in North Bay at (705) 495-3899 which is operated by the Ontario Provincial Police Anti -Rackets Branch and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The branch refers to this case as Project Phone Busters. Police say the scam has been operating for quite some time and has been successful in defrauding unsuspecting people. CALL CLASSIFIED 576-9335 Handa's giving wider choices from menu, all-vou-can-eat buffets Amita & Sunil serve up appetizing dishes from their all -you -can -eat buffet. It's hard to believe that it was just 14 months ago that Handa's Indian Restaurant opened for business at 1410 Bayly St_. Unit 2. in Pickering. The restaurant has undergone many visible changes - in its decor and layout, and also with more emphasis on its Indian cuisine. Customers can still enjoy Handa's famous gourmet sandwiches courtesy of the husband and wife team of Sunil and Amita Handa. But there are now more Indian selections. For starters. there is the all -you -can -eat lunch buffet comprising soup, salad bar and four hot dishes: rice. a non -vegetable and two vegetable dishes. As Sunil and Amita noticed the increased interest in and request for Indian dishes, they quickly responded to give customers what they want. What is surprising, though, is the price at which the all -you -can -eat lunches are offered: a mere $4.99. This is available Mon. to Fri. from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The all -you -can -eat dinner, served from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Mon. to Sat. comprises a larger variety of items, including pickles, salads and nan bread, three vegetable dishes and two non -vegetable dishes. For all this, customers pay $6.99. But price isn't the most important thing about Handa's. As anyone will tell you, price alone, without good taste, won't cause people to return. As one customer describes, "The food is N a a n llfd eadg.4Coe3101. r i bltp-WfAft 371 WOW All. %hm4 authentic. - South Indian specialties include doss. and the very popular masala dosa. This is a large rice crepe stuffed with potatoes, cooked in exotic spices, served with sambar (South Indian lentil soup) and coconut chutney. As Sunil explains, since Handa's has been opened. customers have returned. and told others about the establishment, causing the clientele to grow. Recently, patrons have driven from Scarborough- as well as from east of Oshawa. Take-out buffet, served in Handa's own containers, is also available. As for desserts, there is a variety, including homemade kulfi (Indian ice-cream). Handa's is becoming increasingly well-known for its vegetarian dishes. In fact, the restaurant is '_sted with the Toronto Vegetarian Association as a place to eat. Members of this association receive a 10% discount at Handa's. All in all, Handa's has evolved to a reputable restaurant, serving authentic Indian food at incredible prices. Aside from the buffets, meals can be ordered from the new menu which includes a wider variety of items. It all adds up to value. For more information, or for free lunch-time delivery to Ajax -Pickering businesses, call 420- 4800. - Why Advertise In Focus on Business Durham businesses wanting to increase their profile and sales volume find that being a part of the Focus on Business advertising feature definitely has its advantages. Over the last few years a great marry businesses - of all sizes - have found that investment in the Ajax/Pickering News Advertiser's and Oshawa/Whitby This Week's Focus on Business feature have generated extra phone calls that likely would not have otherwise occurred. How do you get involved? When a company makes a commitment to advertise for 10 weeks on the page, it also receives a full feature story, complete with pictures. The story reinforces the advertisement, enabling the business to explain in depth its product and/or service, philosophy, goals, special promotions and even a historical overview. Unless the business chooses otherwise, everything is done by the newspaper's staff: the ad design, story interview and writing, plus the taking of the photographs. All the business needs to do is prepare for the increased sales volume. The sputtering of a sprinkler. The sounds of Little League baseball. Spring is knocking at the door. Unfortunately, that means that chinch bug, crabgrass, and weeds are on their way as well. IN Property Services (JNPS), a complete property maintenance company, is gearing up for a long, hot summer. Are you? Get a head start on Spring and have JNPS help arrange a lawn and garden care program suitable for your needs. Tom Kluge, owner/operator of JNPS, has studied turf management and pesticide technology courses at the University of Guelph and Humber College. Tom annually attends conferences such as the Annual Turfgrass Symposium in order to keep up to date with all new and environmentally effective techniques that ensure his customers the best service possible. JNPS offers complete service packages that other lawn care companies don't. They cover everything from fertilization, aerating, lawn cutting, re -seeding. weed identification and insect control in lawn and shrubs. There is no worry of scheduling different companies to maintain your home. A schedule is designed to take care of your home so that no one is cutting the lawn two hours after it has just been sprayed for weeds. There is a common interest for your home to look its absolute best. This year JNPS is also pleased to provide a method of treating Birch Leafminer that is only available to ToLeallmm , owner/operator of JNPS treats a birch tragi for Birch WET BASEMENT? • WATER PROOFING • DRAIN REPAIRS MASTER LIC. #D30 FREE SERVICE CALLS 416-443-0011 Tom Kluge, owner/operator of JNPS takes a soil sample as part of a free lawn analysis. licensed applicators. The method (see picture) involves inserting capsules directly into the vee trunk. The insecticide travels rapidly to the leaf bud where it stops the leafminer activity. This method avoids foliar sprays with the accompanying spray drift or soil drenches that affect non -harmful insects. Since JNPS is located in the Pickering/Ajax community they can offer convenient and efficient service that is customized to meet your needs and schedules. For example, certain lawn insecticides need to be watered after being applied in order to provide the optimum effect on your lawn; therefore, JNPS monitors the weather and performs these applications during or just before a rainfall. Not only is the rain a more natural and efficient method, but it also relieves the customer of the task of having to inconveniently water the lawn. The only schedule that JNPS is interested in meeting, is yours. JNPS believes in curing the cause not the symptom of your problems. Not only do they want to solve the apparent problems you may have, they want to avoid these problems from recurring. In order to do this JNPS will advise and work with you so that your home will stay beautiful for years to come. So you think that you must have a lawn as large as a football field in order to utilize and afford JNPS' services? Not true. JNPS offers customized packages that can accommodate any sized lawn and still be inexpensive. For more information and a free estimate, call 420-6089.
