Future Olympian?
The spirit of competition ran high at St. Monica Catholic School in Pickering

❑ Students will continue to enjoy
the sounds of music, great outdoors
DURHAM - Instrumental music for Grades 7
and 8 students and an elementary outdoor educa-
tion program won't be chopped from public
schools in September.
The Durham Board of Education will also
maintain the current number of speech patholo-
gists who work with students suffering physical
and emotional problems which affect speech.
Nor will it cut psychometrists who deal with
behavioral problems in the classr(x)m.
Those were among Axe token to
the items spared from
the chopping block school boeu'd
during the board's HA fungi o / P. 3
most recent round of
budget talks Tuesday. Trustees also decided to:
O retain busing for the outdoor education
program, which takes students to environmental
centres in Claremont, Port Peng and Uxbridge.
O maintain school-based services counsellors
who help students at risk of dropping out of high
school, but not hire additional social workers.
(The board now hives social workers for its ele-
mentary schools, but contracts social workers '
from Durham Region for its high schools. It has
asked the Royal Commission on Learning to
examine which ministry should fund those ser-
vices — education, community and social ser-
vices, or health.)
D reduce by 15 per cent an annual budget of
$484,000 which pays for supply teachers heeded
when regular classroom instructors attend pro-
fessional development activities.
D retain an every -day courier service, which
staff had proposed to reduce to every third day.
Such a cut would have cost more in the long run

School board takes axe to HQ furniture
DURHAM - No new furniture
will grace the main lobby and
reception area of the public school
board's new headquarters after
almost $256,000 was chopped
from its spending budget.
Nor will the Durham Board of
Education see almost $30,000
worth of interior plants originally
destined for the administrative
centre, which will house staff cur-
rently working out of six facilities
across the Region.
After trustees went over the
furniture and equipment budget
with a fine tooth comb, thousands
of dollars were cut from nearly
every item listed. In a 1990 report.
the board estimated it would need
$1.95 million — an amount now
trimmed to $1.7 million.
The breakdown of how that
money will be spent was released
to the public Wednesday:
❑ Window coverings: An
allocation of $90,000 for window
coverings was untouched because
work stations are located near
windows, which would make it

because it would have necessi-
tated the purchase of additional
videos and films for classroom
instruction — which would oth-
erwise be tied up in transit —
finance committee chair Bobbie
Drew reports.
While each of those items
must now be approved by the
full board, all decisions are
expected to stand, according to
Mrs. Drew.
The proposed tax increase
now facing public school sup-
porters is 42 per cera. Before the
board began trimming an esti-
mated budget of $380.4 million,
taxpayers faced a hike of 6.71
per cent.
The board's Feb. 9 decision
to introduce all -day, every -other -
day kindergarten is the most
controversial to date. By
revamping the program, the
board will save $895,000 in
noon -hour transportation costs.
(About $432,000 of that is
picked up by local taxpayers,
while the Province funds the
rennainder through gtants.)
Few items remain on the list
of budget cuts still a be exam-
ined. The next round of talks
hasn't yet been set.
❑ $30,000 worth of interi-
or plants
❑ $84,000 saved on work
stations
❑ $4,000 in furniture for
chairperson's office
difficult to see computer screens
without the coverings.
❑ Work stations: The board
will spend $84,000 less on stations
with built-in wiring for computers
and telephones than it had origi-
nally planned. It will now spend
$627.000 on those stations, which
are expected to reduce the cost of
wiring the four -storey building.
❑ Trustee offices: A budget of

was dropped after it was decided

allocation for a trustees' work-
room was cut by $3,800 and will
now cost $3,300.
❑ Archives: The board will
spend about $11,500 on equip-
ment for the storage of archives.
That budget was cut by $25,000.
❑ Other items: A public
address system for the board room
($285,000), library (516,000),
staff cafeteria ($40300), kitchen
equipment ($67,400), waste han-
dling ($57,500). The board has

will be financed through the sale
of board properties and existing

can be used will be used in the

promises.
The centre will cost an estimat-

PICKERING - The lack of information about last Friday's
explosion that leveled a Marksbury Rd. home and killed one person
is upsetting residents on the street.
"As far as I'm concerned and the people I've talked to, it's one
week later and we know nothing," says Stan Anderson.
His home is two doors away from the three-bedroom bungalow
at 533 Marksbury that was destroyed in a blast caused by a natural
gas leak.
Celia Dearn, 53, was killed in the explosion.
"We're not being told anything and it's irritating putting up with
the closed mouths of everybody," he says. `"Phis was a major explo-
sion and no one is saying anything."
Mr. Anderson made the comments yesterday, prior to meetings
being held by Pickering officials for residents of the area. Represen-
tatives of Consumers Gas, the Pickering Fire Department and
Durham Region works department were invited to the meetings to
explain the situation.
Mr. Anderson feels it's not up to area residents to approach Con-
sumers Gas or Town officials for information. "It's not my obliga-
tion. I didn't cause the explosion. I just live two doors away. Why
should I be calling them?"

Using your
condom sense
February. a month long associated with love and lovers, has been
declared National Condom Month, and we're almost at the end of
National Condom Week.
While the installation of condom machines in high schcx)ls and sex
education for youths remains a controversial issue for many people,
there's no argument that education on the HIV virus, which can cause
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), is a key factor in
helping prevent further spread of the disease. There can be no real edu-
cation on AIDS without discussion of condoms, which, when used
properly and with spermicide, are 95 per cent effective against the
spread of squally -transmitted diseases.
During National Condom Week, AIDS Committee Durham is
reminding everyone that condoms are an important weapon in the fight
against the spread of AIDS.
Used alone, condone are 85 per cent effective, says the committee.
Combined with spermicide, which kills HIV, the rate jumps to 95 per
cent. But, the AIDS Committee points out, 12 years into the AIDS epi-
demic in North America, people are still confused about safer sex and
what it involves.
If you do not choose to abstain from sex, then sexual encounters
with a partner or with multiple partners can be safer if you know the
facts.
Tive AIDS Committee Durham advises that good communication
with your partner is essential to safer sex. if you don't know your part-
ner's HIV status. sex without condoms means you're putting your life
in jeopardy.
Educating ourselves and our children about safe sex will not make
kids promiscuous but will, rather. give youths important information
they need to lead healthy lives. Ignorance can kill.
 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Movie madness
To the editor.
I agree with our Liberal MP
that "Schindler's List" is an
important and thought provoking
movie. However. I find it quite
perplexing that he is being so vig-
orously applauded for arranging a
private, "freebie" screening of the
movie for himself and more than
60 of his colleagues. When
"Schindler's List" was recom-
mended to me as a "must see", I
along with the other 100 or so
patrons at the theatre paid the $8
ticket price. None of us felt that
because the movie had redeeming
social value that we were entitled
to view it for free.
It would have been more
impressive if our MP and his asso-
ciates (many with salaries in the
$100,000 range) could have paid
their way like any average Canadi-
an moviegoer or alternately could
have pooled their ticket savings
(roughly 5500) and made a worth-
while charitable donation.
Wake me up when the Liberal
honeymoon is over and such trivia
"coups" are no longer newsworthy
and will be seen for what they are:
examples of Liberal MPs getting
out of touch (already!) with aver-
age Canadians by expecting spe-
cial privileges.
Leanne Lewis,
Ajax
One board
To the eddor,
In a recent newspaper article,
separate school board chairman
Kevin Ashe trumpets the 25th
anniversary of the Durham Region
Separate School Board. In my
view. and I am a Catholic, it is 25
years too much. The inefficiencies
and duplication of services that
results from two separate taxpayer -
funded systems is only now getting
the public attention and opposition
it deserves. It was also interesting
to note that in 1969 the Board had
9,000 students and 300 teachers, a
30:1 ratio, while today the num-
bers are 23,000 students and 1,366
teachers, a 16:1 ratio. With average
salaries in the 60,000 range, it is no
is enough
wonder that 55 per cent of our
property taxes are being eaten up
by the schools. Also. 560,000 for
"teaching" 16 kids for nine months
of the year, six hours a day is no a
bad setup. NO waxkfr Ontario has
the nation's most expensive system
— it is over staffed and over praid!
When will taxpayers say enough is
enough? Why has the teacher pop-
ulation grown by 350 per cent
while the student population has
only increased by 150 per cent?
Let me hastens to add that the other
is probably just as bad, if not
wase. The whole setup is an insult
to our intelligence.
Paul Vidlak,

PICKERING - One person can
truly make a difference.
That belief motivated Terry Fox to
begin his 1980 cross-country run to
raise money for cancer research after
his leg was amputated at the knee, his
mother reports.
"Most of you children weren't
even born when Terry died in 1980,"
Betty Fox told students at Gandatseti-
agon Public School Monday. "I'm
thrilled to know all you young peo-
ple" know so much about his fight
against cancer.
Mrs. Fox visited the schi ol, which
has raised 514,000 in seven Tem' Fox
runs, to congratulate student Pamela
Johnston. Her poster portraying the
annual run will be distributed to
schools throughout Ontario in
September after being selected top
elementary entry in a provincial con-
test.
"I want to help fight cancer," the
10 -year-old said of her participation
in the run each year and her poster,
which features faces from around the
world.
Terry's marathon has not only
raised money for research, "it also

to know so many people

sounded the alarm about cancer,"
Mrs. Fox said of an increased aware-
ness of warning signs and general
knowledge of the disease.
"Terry once said, 'If I die of can-
cer, I know some good will come of
it*," Mrs. Fox recalled. "I know Terry

would be very proud to know so
many people have picked up his
Marathon of Hope."
Indeed, after he was forced to stop
running near Thunder Bay because
his cancer had returned and spread to
his lungs, Terry expressed hope that
his run would be taken up not by one
person, but by many.
"He knew before he died there
would be a run held every year." Mrs.
Fox told students. The run has since
been adopted by many countries
around the world. including Australia
and Ireland.
While Terry is often looked upon
as a hero, he was "uncomfortable"
with that word, as is his family, who
prefer to see him as a "role model
(who) always finished what he start-
ed. His personal values were impor-
tant to him. He was always an achiev-
er.
"Work at it until you get it right.
That was his motto," his mother
recalled. "He was stubborn and deter-
mined, but more than anything, he
loved a challenge."
But that stubbornness may have
kept Terry from seeing a doctor about
'If you have a pain or a
lump, do something about
it. I believe Terry would be
alive today if he had'
a pain in his right knee until it was too
late. "We all thought it was probably
sports -related ... If you have a pain or a
lump, do something about it," Mrs.
Fox urged students.
"I believe he would be alive today"
if he had that pain examined earlier.

Somewhere in our youth, most
of us lost our appreciation for
insects. This is unfortunate
because insects play a crucial role
in nature as pollinators, natural
composters and `early bites' in the
food chain.
According to entomologist
Nadine Clarke, who offers a sci-
ence insect program at schools
and libraries, the earth holds
approximately two million
species — 1.5 million of them
insects.

They do! The only problem is
there aren't that many out there.
This year has started off with
three excellent movies in
Philadelphia, Schindler's List
and In The Name Of The Father.
This trio attacks various social
issues better than anticipated

In The Name Of The Father
brings the legal system into
question after an innocent man
is wrongfully imprisoned for a
brutal bombing in a London area
pub.
Daniel Day Lewis, who
soared to prominence with his
captivating and Oscar -winning
performance in My Left Foot,
has matched that performance
with a stunning depiction of
Gerry Conlon.
Conlon was a petty thief
forced to leave Belfast by the
Irish Republican Army in 1975.
He winds up in London where
he hooks up with a couple of old
buddies.
It turns out to be the biggest
mistake of his life. a transgres-
sion he pays for during the next
15 years.
Conlon, and his friends Paul
Hill, Paddy Armstrong and Car-
ole Richardson are arrested for
the Guildford bombing which
claimed five lives and injured
scores of others.
The Guildford Four, as they
came to be known, were beaten
and threatened into making false
confessions.
Soon after the confessions
members of Conlon's family are
arrested and imprisoned, includ-
ing his father, Giuseppe Conlon
(played by Pete Postlethwaite).
His father ends up dying while
wrongfully incarcerated.
During his time in prison
with his son the pair discover
more about each other than the,-

This movie also features
Emma Thompson in the role of
Conlon's lawyer, but the court-
room action isn't the main thrust
of the film, putting Thompson in
a minor supporting role.
As Gareth Pierce, the Acade-
my Award winning actress pur-
sues the truth with dogged deter-
mination for years until finally
getting the information she
needed to free Conlon.

phia, rather it builds up to the
climactic end.
The movie is based upon the
book Proved Innocent, but has
been altered to create a more
dramatic tale.
It succeeds thanks to screen-
writers Jim Sheridan and Terry
George.
Sheridan also produced and
directed the Gabriel Byrne film.
In The Name Of The Father
successfully works on a couple
of levels which makes it appeal-

a personal drama.

RYLERIC CRAFTS HELPS YOU SPEND
THE TIME PRODUCTIVELY, RELAXED
What would make a
grandmother of eight operate a
business that involves selling
crafts, supplies and teaching
ceramics to women?
Well, for Linda Rehel, it's
simply a love of crafts - a way
to share her talent with others
while pursuing her own
interests.
Pickering's Ryleric Crafts is
the business in question.
Owner Linda began doing
crafts for herself several years
ago, and besides the obvious
benefit of learning new skills,
she reaped such other benefits as
the satisfaction of producing
attractive products for her home,
for giving as gifts to friends and
loved ones, not to mention the
reduced stress she experienced
as an offshoot of being involved

teaches ceramic classes for three
hours, one evening a week. The
eight-week classes are on a
continual basis. Although the
current session is in progress,
anyone interested is still able to
join, or sign up for the next
session, which begins mid-
March. Men are also welcome.
There has been some interest
in a children's ceramics class,
and Linda says she will likely
offer such a class in the future.
for children as young as eight
years old.
The business woman also sells
ceramics supplies - not just for
her students, but in fact for
anyone needing supplies:
greenware and bisque pieces, for
example. If she doesn't have the
exact item you are looking for,
Linda has an assortment of
catalogues, from which items
can be ordered within a matter
of days.
She also carries supplies other
than ceramics; and she is the
local dealer for Pretty Punch
supplies. Pretty Punch is a type
of craft that is similar to
needlepoint. It can be appliqued
on such items as T-shirts or wall
hangings to create an interesting
visual image.
People who frequent craft
shows will likely have seen
Linda at one of the many shows
she has taken part in. During
March, she will be part of at
least two shows, one of which is
at the Pickering Town Centre.
Being a craftswoman. Linda.
of course, accepts custom
orders. She has made numerous
items for people: swans, fans,
candy dishes, vases...
Because Linda knows first
hand the advantages of what she
is doing she would encourage
any - and everyone to join her.
"I find it very relaxing," she
says. "Craftmaking is a real
tension breaker. It's also nice to
get together to meet other
people.
"There's a lot of satisfaction in
doing gifts for people or for
your own home."
If you are interested in
purchasing craft supplies,
learning ceramics or other
crafts, or you simply want a
unique item made, call Linda for
more information. She can be
reached at 831-9151.

Why Advertise In Focus on Business 1.
Durham businesses wanting to increase their profile and sales voh►me fmd that being a
part of the Focus on Business advertising feature definitely has its advantages.
Over the last few years a great many businesses - of all sizes - have found that investment
in the Ajax/Pickering News Advertiser's and Oshawa/Whitby This Week's Focus on
Business feature have generated extra phone calls that likely would not have otherwise
occurred. _
How do you get involved?
When a company makes a commitment to advertise for 10 weeks on the page, it also
receives a full feature story, complete with pictures.
The story reinforces the advertisement, enabling the business to explain in depth its
product and/or service, philosophy, goals. special promotions and even a historical
overview.
Unless the business chooses otherwise, everything is done by the newspaper's staff: the
ad design, story interview and writing, plus the taking of the photographs.
All the business needs to do is prepare for the increased sales volume. For axwe
information call Janice at 663-5110.

While police departments across
the country toil to reduce the inci-

have a lifetime likelihood of being
burglarized. How, then, can con-

According to crime prevention

many recommend use of motion

Suspended ceilings are changing
their image.
For years, these popular home
improvement products were viewed
solely as a way to cover up the bare
floor joists in an unfinished base-
ment, or hide a cracked and water -
stained plaster or drywall ceiling.
Today, however, suspended ceil-
ings are being eyed as a decorative
interior finish for a variety of rooms,
including dining rooms, bedrooms,
living rooms. studies, home offices
and more.
Why'' Because of the advent of a
whole new generation of suspended
ceiling panels that feature style, pat-
tern and design, in addition to their
functional benefits.
This new generation of ceiling
panels is available in new array of
styles combining classic details and
contemporary lines with the look and
smooth finish of molded plaster.
These panels appeal to homeowners
who are looking to make a more
sophisticated statement in their
homes.
The distinctive visual appeal of

Motion detector lights are easy to

Ho m e technology helps you keep warm
From the comfort of an easy chair,
you press a button on a remote control,
but it is not the television set or the
VCR that responds — it is the gas fire-
place.
Technology is making even the
hearth more convenient and more effi-
cient. Homeowners who have not
looked at stoves or fireplaces lately are
likely to be surprised by the techno-
logical advancements in this area.

There's more to the cost of a
dishwasher than just the price listed
on the sticker. The most efficient
machines pay for themselves in a
few years b, saving lots of water.
detergent and electricity.
When choosing a dishwasher,
here are sone savings to look for:
-Water savings — Dishwashers
with the most efficient pump and
filtration systems can conserve up
to 2.600 gallons a year, based on
using your dishwasher once a day.
While some models use as much as
12.5 gallons for a single load, the
best water -saving dishwashers use
only about 5 gallons in a normal
wash cycle — and less than 4 gal-
lons on a delicate cycle setting. It's
actually cheaper to run a full load
than to wash the same dishes by
hand.
-Energy savings — Using less
water also saves electricity, because
less water has to be heated. Rather
than draw water from the home
hot-water tank, energy-efficient
models use an internal heating coil.
Dual pumps and motors also save
energy. Most dishwashers use only
one pump and motor for pumping
water in and out. This wastes a lot
of electricity. The most energy-effi-
cient models use dual pumps and
motors, and require 65 -percent less
electricity than average.
-Less detergent — Many dishwash-
ers reuse dirty water from previous
cycles. Look for a dishwasher with
a filtration system that uses less
water by always keeping it clean,
which also means you use only
about half as much detergent.
If you choose the right dish-
washer,.you will find how quickly

more convenient to regulate gas fire-
places.
Wood -burning and gas fireplace
systems can be installed in any home.
Some gas units arc so clean burning.
they don't even require a chimney —
a small vent from the unit to the out-
side can be installed on any exterior
wall.
New designs and technology have
also made it possible for homeowners
to have a fireplace in locations that
would not be possible with traditional
units — such as under a window or in
a basement family room.
New technology also permits the
homeowner to improve the efficiency
of an existing open fireplace. which
are extremely ineffiency. They exhaust
huge quantities of air up the flue.
resulting in drafts that pull additional
heat out of the home. Studies place the
efficiency of an open fireplace at
under 10 percent.
The homeowner can dramatically
increase the efficiency of an existing
open fireplace by installing a gas or
wood -burning fireplace insert. Inserts
till the existing fireplace opening and
connect to the existing flue.
New wood -burning fireplace inserts

Stoves have also changed for the
better. Today's wood -burning stoves

Installing a stove or fireplace also
increases the value of the home.

In-hombige communication takes a
step
11.
New home buyers looking for an
inexpensive way to add bells and
whistles to their homes often opt for
intercom systems that usually fall
short of the mark when it comes to
convenience, quality and aesthetics.
Before purchasing an intercom,
homeowners should ask themselves
one question — why install yester-
day's technology when today's elec-
tronics systems are more versatile and
affordable?
The new wave of whole -house
communication and entertainment sys-
tems are currently on the market are
not only easy to use, but they won't
interfere with your home's decor.
Most system use high-quality in -
wall speakers and signal distribution
components that provide whole -house
paging, as well as audio and video dis-
tribution using the homeowner's exist-
ing electronics (TVs, stereo equip-
ment, VCR. etc.).
The most significant advancement
of today's intercoms is sound quality.
Using standard speakers instead of the
five -inch, four -watt, built-in speakers
in the intercoms of yesteryear, means
voices are crystal clear.
What does
a home
communication
network do?
Home communication networks
integrate electronic equipment into
a whole -house system. You can set
up an electronic network in your
home to provide better security.
Best of all, it is convenient to use
and attractive.
Here's a sample of the features
you can incorporate into a home
communications network system:
♦ Whole -house music and door
chime distribution using existing
audio equipment
♦ High-quality in -wall or ceiling
speakers
♦ Individual volume control
♦ Door chime and paging over sys-
tem speakers
♦ Whole -house video distribution
using existing video equipment
♦ Access cable or off -air signals
from any TV
♦ Access VCR or other video
source from any TV
♦ Page over system speakers
♦ Operate door/gate latch, or other
relay -activated device
♦ Closed circuit television camera
system
♦ Monitor closed circuit cameras
from any TV
♦ Horne theater surround sound
package
♦ Specially matched components
provide thunderous, theater -quality
sound
Today s systems let homeowners
use their existing stereo components to
distribute music throughout the home
over high-quality in -wall speakers,"
explains Paul Starkey of Square D, a
leading manufacturer of home com-
munication systems.
Convenience is another big advan-
tage of today's in-home communica-
tion systems. With an intercom, the
user has to physically be near the in -
wall station to communicate. That is
no longer the case.
"if you're relaxing in your recliner
and want to call your child into the
room, wouldn't it be a lot easier to
simply pick up the telephone that's on
the table next to you, and page your
child over house -wide speakers?" asks
Starkey.
Some systems also offer the option
of monitoring inside and outside your
home with closed circuit cameras and
door speakers — and all through your
entertainment system. This allows you
to flip channels on your television set
to see who's at the front door and use
your telephone to communicate with
them.
There's also the issue of aesthetics.
Granted, intercoms have gotten a little
bit better -looking over the years, but
the fact remains that you have to
install an ungainly box in every room
of your home.
"That is not a problem. Today's sys-
tem requires a minimal amount of in -
wall control devices," Starkey says.
"Controls are the size of a light switch,
while speakers mount flush in the wall
or ceiling and can be painted or wall-
papered to completely blend with a
room's decor."
Perhaps the biggest advantage of all
is flexibility and "future -safe" design.
Intercom of the past had no add-on
capability. Basically, you're stuck with
the unit you buy.
Technology has made it possible for
home communication systems to grow
along with the homeowner's needs.
And, the system is not affected when
you purchase new stereo components
ore xpand your cable service.
