Elise de Villiers, an OAC student at Pickering's St. Mary Catholic Secondary School, has been accepted by Youth Challenge International to travel to Guyana in May. "I'd be happy doing anything at all," she says of a num- ber of projects she could be assigned to during her three- month stay, including building a cottage -sized hospital in - Y 8 g the mountains, carrying out environmental research in the rainforest, or teaching dental hygiene to youngsters. Youth Challenge, co-sponsored by the Canadian Inter- national Development Agency and the private sector,- r works with scientific institutes, universities, government agencies and service groups as it tackles recognized prob- lems in developing regions and remote communities around the world. ` Its volunteers, aged 17 to 25, most endure a gruelling}. . weekend of tests "which push you to every mental and physical limit poWble" before being selected. Until then, she faces the "difficult" task of raising enough money before her dream becomes a reality. " holo by Pon Ifo Car thefts a popular crime in Durham By MAURICE SIMMS Special to The News Advertiser DURHAM - Crime statistics are down throughout the region but there's been no cor- responding reduction in car thefts. In the last six months of 1993, 192 vehi- cles of all makes were stolen, Durham Regional Police report. Figures show a pref- erence for Chrysler products among thieves, a trend which has increased, with thieves taking mostly Plymouth Voyagers and Dodge Cara- vans. "We don't have the statistics pulled together yet, but there appears to be a trend," reports Staff Sergeant Sandy Ryrie, who believes the apparent preference for Chrysler products may be temporary. "Last year we had a trend towards Chevettes, mostly 84s, 85s and 86s. It's sometimes difficult to say what's behind the statistics" Police watch the figures closely because they can help identify trends which could suggest what action they can take. "People should be aware that this is hap- pening and be careful not to leave their engines running when they're not there or leave doors unlocked," Staff Sgt. Ryrie advis- es. "There are people who like to take a ride or prefer to ride home rather than walk." Very few cars are stolen to be sold or dis- mantled. "They normally turn up again quick- ly and they're usually in good shape, but we do get cars burned out," notes Staff Sgt. Ryrie. Most joy riders are teenagers and under -age drivers. On Monday, police arrested nine people aged 13 to 17 in three separate car -theft hici- dents in Oshawa, Bowmanville and Ajax. ::,DONT LET ANOTHER DAY END WITHOUT MEETING THAT SPECIAL SOMEONE! Both the Durham Board of Education and the Durham Region Roman Catholic Sepa- rate School Board closed schools and offices after freezing rain made roads and sidewalks treacherous. (Whenever possible, staff opened schools to receive stu- dents unaware of the closures and to ensure their safe return home, a public school board spokesman reports.) Meanwhile, the emergency department at the Ajax and Pick- ering General Hospital was kept busy with at least eight people needing medical attention after slipping on ice, including some involving fractures. That's the kind of money that will be spent on infrtstructum projects in Durham Region alone as part of the federal Liberals' job creation plan. The amount of funds to be spent across the whole of Ontario is $1.23 billion, and that is expected to curate 20.000 to 2.5,000 jobs in the province. While the money is to come from thme levels of government — fed- eral, provincial and regional — the job creation plan was initiated by the new Liberal government. This is the big one. The Liberals have made a point of promptly fol- lowing through on a number of promises made in last fall's federal election campaign. But this is the one plank in the platform that appealed to the electorate enough to cause that so-called 'red tide' that swept the country. At this particular point in this grinding depression that we've all been suffering through — some of us more than others — any jobs are good jobs. And so what if they aren't the most permanent jobs possible. The fact is, many of the irtfraStructure jobs to be undertaken have been put off for many years and art' badly needed. In addition, the con- struction industry has been decimated by the recess)on/depression, and it just makes sense to help get them back to worm, and doing wort: that is needed. All this talk about kick-starting the economy, giving it a little shot in the arm and so on, really doesn't sound too bad right now, when you think about it. Afterall, they've been telling us for awhile now a lack in consumer confidence is partly to blame for that economic sludge we're wading right now. Well, give some of those. consumers a little money in their empty pockets and they're bound to show more confidence. R7io sayN the government doesn't have a role to play in job cre- ation:' Now let's cross our fingers and hope it works until somebody comes up with a beater idea Letters to the editor Wim= From the editor's desk Wendy Gallagher Thanks neighbor', Hang tight i won't To the editor. The group at the table made themselves comfortable. They were being treat- ed to a pre -Christmas dinner in Pickering Village. There were seven of them, including 2 12 year old Matthew. The ambiance of the restaurant blended well with the group and the evening was spent catching up. The topics of conversa- tion reflected the times all too well - one of the men would lose his job in June and another had been out of work for several months. But, despite these events, the group was spirited and hopeful. At the end of the meal, the couple called Michelle and Brian picked up the tab. These were our neighbors treating us. I grew up with a sense of neighbors in the same regard as mother-in-law Jokes. Neighbors were diose folks you waved to over the hedge and never the two should meet When I was a child, fences were not the mend, unless the next door neighbor had dogs, in which case ours did, so we were grateful to be spared the jaws of the not so-firien lly pets. Other than this rather mysterious barricade on the one side, the back yards of the rest of the homes stretched out until they disappeared into woods. Despite this, there was no abuse of anyone's property or paths worn across the lawns. Forty years later, I hear about the war of the fences. I didn't anticipate becoming friends with our neighbors. I'm a private person and casual talk has never been one of my favorite pastimes, so I never expected to really know our neighbors. Now, I'm so glad I do. This past year held many challenges. My husband, an unemployed execu- tive, searching for employment for over a year was finally offered a contract in Nova Scotia. We decided to have a long distance marriage until we were certain I should give up my job and re -root My neighbors become my extended family. ZsuTanna, the norther of Matthew, was never too busy to have me join them each week. And then the winter of '93 arrived; the storm of the century! That morning, the phone range at 6:45 am., and Zsuzanna's cheerful voice asked me if I'd looked outside yet I hadn't, and when I did, I saw Joel shoveling our driveway. Another storm snapped an evergreen across our driveway and our other neighbors cleared away the debris. The many thoughtful gestures by our neighbors do not end here. They are numerous. So, the next time you hear about the neighbors, remember mine. Diana Cawfieki, Ajax be coming to work Take a moment to think about the number of times you strug- gled to pull yourself out of bed in the morning. The time you woke up with a headache that would stop a clock, a runny nose that almost flooded your bedroom, or a stomach ache that you would have eaten glass to stop. But you went to work anyway. Then this week, an Ontario arbitration panel awards a gov- ernment worker a day's sick pay because he called in sick with a hangover. Frustrating? You bet. I'm throwing in the towel. I'm going to begin awarding myself a day off each month. I thought I'd stick along the same theme as the hangover. Perhaps it was the word 'hang' that inspired the board to grant the gentleman pay. In that case I will prepare the following excuses for my boss. Wish I could come to work today, however, I have a hang- nail that might get irritated from my computer keyboard. ❑ Sorry I didn't make it into work, I decided to hang out with my unemployed friends. ❑ My clothes were too wrin- kled for work because I didn't have a hanger. ❑ I'm waterlogged after hanging 10 with my friends at the surf. ❑ The neighborhood kids tied me up and used me as their hangman. ❑ I had a spat with my friend over borrowed nail polish, she decided to hang up on me, and I'm too upset to work. ❑ I ate too much at supper and my stomach was hanging over the waist of my skin this morning -- I couldn't go to work looking like that. ❑ I slept in and missed work entirely because I haven't yet got the hang of my alarm clock. ❑ While at my favorite hangout, I lost track of the time and before I knew it the work day was over. Please Mr. or Mrs. arbitrator, rule on my side. I'm trying to hang tough and your decision could leave my job hanging in the balance. Tri -Clean Re -usable Laundry Disks that go into the washload eliminate the need for chemical detergents. This invention con- sists of three small disks, made of polypropylene casing with a float rim, which contain charged ceramic beads. These beads cause the water molecules to dis- sociate through an electrical phe- nomenon thus enabling the frac- tured water molecule units easier penetration into fabrics to dis- solve dirt. The environmental benefits are detergents are not in the waste water; disks are reusable until casings wear out; and clothes are soft without chemi- cals. Personal benefits include financial and time saving; no detergent -based allergies; no detergent residue in clothes; and no static cling. I purchased Tri -Clean at a Scarborough environmental fair and have been using the product since November. My testimonial — no complaints from three teenagers.
