And you'll hear no complaints from students or teachers. They're welcoming with open arms a new program which teaches concern and respect for life — through the eyes of household pets. The Kindness Club, a two-year pilot project introduced by the Durham Board of Education in September, aims to help both chil- dren and animals by promoting con- cem and respect for all fife forms. "Student and staff reaction has been phenomenal," reports Kind- ness Club teacher Heather Truscott, who visits elementary schools with The Kindness Club is winning rave reviews from teachers and stu- dents everywhere. "Everyone's smiling. It creates a happy environment. I believe the kindness and empathy people show towards animals will be extended to people." The program was a hit at West- ney Heights Public School in Ajax. `"rite kids just loved it," raves vice- principal Tinie Evans. "There's something about an animal that does magic with students. At the same time, it teaches important values." Lessons are tailored to each grade level. In kindergarten, for example, students identify different types of pets and wild animals and are taught safety and caution in han- dling and approaching pets. In Grades 3 and 4, Ms. Truscott points out the similarities between animals and people, reminding them that Toby can feel happy, sad, angry and afraid. "I ask (students) how they like to be treated. Then I ask, 'If animals have the same feelings as we do, then how does a dog want to be treated?' The room usually becomes very silent. That's when the light goes on in the mind of most kids." Just as animals and people share many of the same feelings, animals have many of the same needs — such as food, water, shelter and health care. But all students learn that Toby has had four homes in the last three years. "People often get pets without realizing the responsibilities that go with it," Ms. Truscoa explains..'In the end, it's the pet who suffers. Going back and forth from a shelter to a home is too common." The Kindness Club was first introduced in New Brunswick in 1961. It has since been incorporated as a non-profit organization in Cana- da, and has expanded to Ontario, Manitoba and British Columbia Kindness Clubs now operate in DELIVERY SERVICE WATCH FOR THESE INSERTS & FLYERS COMING TO YOUR DOOR WITH YOUR NEWS ADVERTISER CARRIER TODAY AND IN THE DAYS AHEAD SUN., JAN. 16194 NEWS ADVERTISER (AJAXIPICK. ) 'A&P (PICK.) Durham's public board adopted the program after seeing its success in such neighboring boards as Scar- borough, where it has been offered for 20 years. "We already knew the benefits of animals for seniors and shut-ins," explains program facilitator Kather- ine Chow. "For many children, get- ting in touch with their feelings can start with the care of pets. It really is a marvellous program." Schools are invited to make a voluntary contribution to the Kind- ness Club, which offers the program at no charge. A school would typi- cally book the program for a number of consecutive days, with Ms. Truscott and Toby visiting five to six classes a day for 30 to 45 min- utes each. Though Ms. Truscott and Toby are fully booked until the end of the school year, the program will be available to schools next year. For more information, call Ms. Chow at 666-3821. That's the latest piece of good news on the job front we've heard in the past little while. The Manpower Survey named Durham Region as one of only two places in Canada where firms planning to hire outnumber those predicting cutbacks. Of local employers surveyed about first-quarter hiring plans, 13 per cent intend to add more workers while eight per cent antici- pate staff reductions. Another 72 per cent foresee no change in personnel level, possibly a reassuring sign to almost three-quarters of us who lose sleep at night woming if we'll have a job the next day. In fact. 'Manpower's Lorraine Stevenson notes the current employment -outlook survey is the "most promising in more than a year. The news from ?Manpower comes just days after Pickering mayor Wayne Arthurs announced that two companies coming to Town may employ more than 100 area residents and just weeks after the Costco Warehouse opened in Ajax, providing jobs to 150 people. More good news for the area's unemployed came early in the new year from Ajax mayor Jim Witty who revealed a Loblaws store is to open in Town by the end of 1994, giving work to 250. Add to that the fact the pending $1 _3 redevelopment of the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital will create 2,000 jobs and we finally have some news that should make the area's jobless smile. We couldn't be happier ourselves. Letters to the editor Restored faith To the editor. - "r In the fall of 1993, I left my wallet in a phone booth one evening around 7 pm. As it so happens, I had just been to the bank and had a substantial amount of money in the wallet. I realized that my wallet was missing early the next rooming and, of course, went racing back to the phone booth to see if it was still there. It wasn't. I resumed home and waited for the infamous 'Good Samaritan' to call me and say that my wallet and all its contents were intact No such call came. Not only were my wallet and money gone, all my identification, passes, membership cards, etc. were also `mien'. It cost me over S 125 to replace all my ideraification. I had not only lost my wallet, but my faith in mankind had been severely damaged. I decided that I been foolish to really believe that someone would turn in my wallet. I decided that the `Good Samaritans' of this world, or certainly of Ajax were few and far between. On December 28,1993,1 changed my mind. Myself and my two young chil- dren were going about doing or errands when I had some serious car trouble at the Baywood Plaza. I punctrtzed both tires of my tar and was virtually unable to move the vehicle anywhere. A man and his young daughter approached me and I was worried he would be angry that I had blocked his car into a parking spot This man, whose name I later found out was Gord, was in fact the `Good Samantan' I had been ktolung for! His immediate concern was not for his car, or the fact that I had blocked him in - his concern was for how he could help. He changed one of my tires and he tried to give me his spare tire to put on the other wheel but it would not fru He offered to drive my children and I to wherever we needed to go to get help and also offered to drive back and change the unfixed tire if I needed him to. Gord's kindness and concern has single handedly restored my faith in mankind. I might also add that while Gord was fixing my tire I went into a nearby coffee shop to make a phone call. While explaining my plight over the phone, another couple approached me offering any assistance they could - they also offered to give my children and I a drive to wherever we needed. I couldn't believe it - two good Samaritans in one day! I choose to believe that the majority of the people (in Ajax, at least) are good, kind people who are looking out for their fellow neighbors. Cathy Hu -A -Kam, Ajax From the editor's Weighting for a ski adjustment Ladies beware: Taking your skis in for fine tuning could be hazardous to your ego. Last weekend I took my (gulp) 14 -year-old skis to have them waxed and sharpened. I think the attendant was still in diapers when I purchased them. He recommended I go for the 'mini package' which for $2 more would get my bindings adjusted I agreed. He asked me my height. I paused. Before I answered, I asked him what the next question would be. He said he'd be asking about my weight. I laughed a nervous laugh. He said my height and weight were important to know, so the techni- cian could properly adjust the bindings. I remarked that many many lies must be told at this counter. I told him my weight -- minus a few pounds. I watched his reac- tion. He didn't bust a seam laugh- ing. Just when I thought the worst was over, he asked me my age. I exploded with laughter. I couldn't possibly imagine why a ski tech- nician would need to know my age. He told me my skis would be adjusted according to all three factors: height, weight and age. At that moment, I was expect- ing Allan Funt to step out from behind the counter and tell me to smile. I told the technician my age, and I was honest. I'm not normally sensitive about discussing my age, height and weight with anyone. That's Probably because no one ever inquires. The dog, named Charlie by soci- ety members, is recovering from extensive spinal surgery and is cur- rently in the care of a foster home. Kathy Asling, founder of TAGS, says the young dog needed help and the bill for the surgery is much greater than what the group can afford. "We are running into pretty high stuff with specialists," says Ms. Asling. "When you get into the thousands of dollars. it's more than we would have spent in a year." On a regular basis, the group funds minor surgerics, such as neu- tering, for animals it picks up throughout Durham Region. But when a major operation is needed, TAGS just doesn't have the resources to foot the bill, explains Ms. Asling. She says TAGS received just over S400 in donations for Charlie, but that still leaves S1.710 to pay. An account has been set up by the group to help pay for Charlie's high medical bill. "Any help we can get is always appreciated," says Ms. Asling. "(Any extra) funding will remain in the account for animals in the future who require special surgery." Charlie was rescued by TAGS last August. X-rays revealed that, as a result of malnutrition, his spinal column had not developed proper- ly. The dog was in "extreme pain and it was not something that could be easily dealt with," says Ms. Asling. "We decided to have surgery as opposed to putting him HAIR CLASS SALON INTRODUCES • $15.00 OFF • 71 REGULAR PRICE • I SET OF NAIL TIPS • WITH THIS • 1 COUPON I N In this week's 'Mid-WvAer Savings' flyer the blbwirlg errors have occurred: The 24 -Roll Pack Bathroom Tissue featured on page 2 is NVhite Swan' brand not 'April Soft' as illustrated. Fund-raising coordinator Denise Harding says the Toron- to/York/Durham chapter of the organization has about 15 dis- abled people on a waiting list for assistive mobility devices, such as wheelchairs and walk- ers. To meet the needs of those handicapped individuals — three in Durham — the organi- zation requires about $30,000. A Whitby resident has been waiting for a 54,000 scooter for about five months, Mrs. Harding reports. When someone requires equipment, the March of Dimes applies to the provincial govern- ment's Assistive Devices Pro- gram. If the applicant qualifies for funding, the program pays 75 per cent of the cost and the March of Dimes 25 per cent. If the applicant doesn't qualify, the latter can pick up the whole cost. The March of Dimes is get- ting more requests for 100 pei cent funding because of provin- cial social contract cutbacks Mrs. Harding notes. The Canadian National Insti- tute for the Blind (CN®) office on Hwy. 2 in Oshawa is sched- uled to close after Feb. 25 due to funding problems. But an effort is being made to raise money locally so the office can continue to operate. "We've been pulling every string and doing everything we can to keep it open," says Bud Lambert, chairman of the CNIB advisory board for Durham Region. "If they close this office it will be a long time coming back. Everything will be run out of Richmond Hill. It's just no good. It's too far away. Our clients here will be the ones who suffer." The CNIB Ontario head office has agreed to keep the Dtuham branch open for at least another six months if the local CNIB board can raise $12,000 to cover the cost. One full-time employee in the office would still be laid off and be replaced by volunteers. If the office closes, CNIB services such as rehabilitation, orientation and mobility train- ing, counseling and talking books would be provided by staff from the CNIB's York Region branch. But Durham residents would no longer be able to buy locally technical aids such as talking clocks, special glasses, braille paper and white canes. Nor would they be able to borrow here machines they need to lis- ten to the talking books. They'd have to travel to Richmond Hill or Scarborough to get them, or wait until CNIB workers could bring them during visits to Durham. 'What else are they going to take from usT -- CNIB client The CNIB serves about 950 clients in Durham. One of them, Lillian McEachern, who is 69 and has lost nearly all her sighi, says she'd be devastated by the closure of the local office. "What more are they going to take from us?" she asks. "We can't drive to Richmond Hill to get supplies. It (the office) is no palace or anything, just a little meeting place... Mrs. McEachern points out CNIB clients need the office for moral support as well as equip- ment. "You get so depressed,- she explains. "1 can't work. I can't read. All I'm working with is one eye and it's weak." Mrs. McEachern and her hus- band Arnold have made a fman- cial donation which they hope will help keep the office open, RHCa RECREAT101V CO %Q 1867 Valley Farm Rd.4* 1994 SQUASH OPEN HOUSE M Hckeruv o January 17 and 24, 1994 9:30 a.m. - 11:00 p.m. (2).. Another client, Mary Ann Allan, has been blind for more than 30 years and believes the local office is needed so services won't lose the "personal touch". She notes many newly -blind people find it easier to get out again if they can be with another blind person. "Without the CNIB (office) as a nucleus, I can see a lot of social activities dwindling." A task force of local board members, community group representatives and health pro- fessionals is being set up to raise money to keep the office open, and to pressure the provincial government to provide funding to improve CNIB services local- ly. The Oshawa Central Lions Club has already donated $4,000. According to Gary Magar- rell, executive director for the CNIB in Ontario, services for the blind and hearing impaired in Durham have been under- funded by the Province. He says the possible closure of the Durham office is part of a series of cutbacks the CNIB has had to make province -wide. As in Durham, other local boards are being asked to raise money and to pressure the Province for funding. Anyone interested in making a donation to the local CNIB or helping out as a volunteer can phone the Oshawa office at 436- 7732.
