DURHAM - Females outnumbered
males in Durham the last time anyone
checked, and the Region is becoming
home to more elderly people and fewer
residents who speak English as their first
language.
Those are among findings of a recent
Durham Region planning department
report based on information from a census
conducted by Statistics Canada in 1991
and covering the five-year period begin-
ning in '86.

Information in the Region report will
be used to help with planning matters and
to establish policies for housing, educa-
tion and social services.
In the five-year perioO, the Region's
population jumped from 326,180 to
409,070.
Durham's population here almost dou-
bled in the past 20 years and it's expected
to double again in the next two decades.
About 440,000 people now live in the
Region.
During the census period, the female
population grew by one per cent more
than the male population. There were
2.300 more females living here than males
in '91.
The number of Region residents 60
years and older rose from 38,000 in '86 to
47,500 in '9l.
People claiming a language other than
English as their mother tongue grew one
per cent, with most either German or Ital-
ian.

Durham Region is chipping in about $30,000.
Durham Centre MPP Drummond White says there'll be
a "big-time effect from a small amount of money. It's
these kinds of investments that make the Region a good
place to live."
Oshawa councillor and Celebrate Durham '94 steering
committee co-chairman David Conway describes the festi-
val as "an opportunity to get to know each others' munici-

Whitby mayor Tom Edwards says Celebrate Durham
`94 will "promote our area to each other and to the out-
side. "
It's a chance for "neighbors to meet neighbors," says
Region chairman Gary Herrema.

and promotional vehicle for them.
Region officials hope that pro-
motion will draw outsiders here to
boost a tourism business that's
worth between $300 million and
$500 million a year to Durham,
according to Region economic
development commissioner Pat
Olive.
Planning for Celebrate Durham
'94 began 18 months ago.
Of course, the Region was
born two decades ago in 1974 to
replace Ontario County and half
of Durham -Northumberland
County.
Durham, as it's officially known,
covers 1,000 square miles,
stretching from Pickering in the
west to Clarington in the east, and
north to Brock Township and
Lake Simcoe.
Since its birth, the Region has
seen its population more than
double from about 200,000 citi-
zens to more than 440,000.
Among the duties the Region
is responsible for are policing,
garbage disposal, providing water
and sewage, and delivering social
services, such as welfare.
Although it's been in existence
for 20 years, many people still
Winter's first storm
wreaks havoc
for area motorists
DURHAM - Thursday's long -feared first blast of winter kept
area police hopping with numerous fender benders.
Luckily, though, both Durham Regional Police and Whitby
OPP report no major injuries.
Durham Regional Police were kept on the go with several
dozen traffic accidents, says Staff Sergeant Sandy Ryrie.
Constable Bill Garnett reports Whitby OPP had recorded 21
mishaps as of noon Friday. However, some accident reports were
still being filed by motorists involved in minor fender benders and
who decided not to wait out Thursday's two or three-hour backlog
with Whitby OPP.
Region.
Durham economic develop-
ment manager Norm Leigh says,
"We still hear people say they
didn't know they lived in
Durham. We feel there isn't much
of a sense of a Durham munici-
pality. There's more of a sense of
local community."
Part of the blame for that can
be attributed to Region officials,
Mr. Herrema admits. "This is a
government that hasn't done
much public relations."
Mr. Leigh expects that will
change with Celebrate Durham,
which he hopes will give people a
sense of the cultural diversity in
the Region. "It will give people
an idea of what's in their own
backyard."
Among the events planned by
the Celebrate Durham '94 com-
mittee are a bicycle race in
Oshawa in May and a car show at
the General Motors headquarters
in Oshawa in August.
Opening ceremonies for the
year-long celebration are being
to 5 p.m. at Eastdale Collegiate, The public's invited.

Special to the News Advertiser
PICKERING - Groups and
people looking to the Town for
help funding recreation projects
had better be prepared to raise
money themselves.
They could follow the lead of
the South Pickering Lawn Bowl-
ing Club for whom the grass may
soon be greener on the other side,
possibly without taxpayers seeing
red.
Pickering council will decide
in budget deliberations Thursday
and Friday whether to give the
club an additional $90,000 this
year so it can lay down lawn
bowling greens at the East Shore
Community Centre on Liverpool
Rd.
The politicians had earmarked
$50,000 for the project in each of
the past two years.
And, Town operations director
Tom Quinn hopes they'll be more
generous this year.
"I would like to give it the
green light and I will be looking
to council during budget discus-
sions to (open up the coffers) so
we can put the project out to ten-
der this sprang and have it com-
pleted by mid-September."
He's especially anxious to get
the go-ahead because bowling
green proponents have been such
good partners with the Town dur-
ing efforts to come up with the
necessary funds. The club and its
lawn bowling committee have
already raised $134,000 for their
4 -
pet project, which when complet-
ed will be available for use by the
general public.
Much of that money comes
from Wednesday afternoon bingos
the club's held the past three years
in a fund drive spearheaded by
president Rene Lizotte, who took
over the project after the death of
her predecessor Earl Wilson.
The club's efforts make the
bowling greens "the number -one
project for construction this year,"
says Mr. Quinn. And, in honor of
the work of the lawn bowling club
and its past president, "I want to
call it the Earl Wilson Greens."
The Pickering Hockey Associ-
ation also wins praise from Mr.
Quinn as an example of a group
taking the initiative to fund a pet
project.
"They wanted a new score-
board sign in Don Beer Arena, so
the association went out and
raised the $8,000 needed to buy
one."
He had told the PHA the Town
didn't have the money to help out.
Mr. Quinn notes that, when a
group raises funds for a project,
'"rite taxpayer isn't paying for it."
With the economic climate the
way it is and people's unwilling-
ness to pay more taxes, he
believes fund-raising by groups is
"a trend for the '90s. It's a part-
nership between Pickering organi-
zations and groups.
"If you want something done,
you have to show motivation to
help make it happen."

Celebrate
Durham
So. Region officials want you to celebrate Durham's 20th anniversary.
"Bah, humbug," we can hear the cry of many. "Durham Region's just
another tax -grabbing entity." So will say those who see a glass that's half
empty, rather than half full.
Quit crying in your beer, pessimists, and raise it in a toast to your
home Region. Then, join the party to Celebrate Durham '94. For there is
plenty to celebrate about.
The Region has plenty to offer, which Durham officials hope will
become apparent during the year-long festival of about 360 events. Those
same officials admit they've done a poor job in the past of promoting the
Region. "This is a government that hasn't done much public relations,"
concedes one. Says another. "We still hear people say they didn't know
they lived in Durham. We feel there isn't much of a sense of a Durham
municipality. There's more of a sense of local community."
That's about to change after Celebrate Durham '94 is officially
launched with opening ceremonies Sunday. The festival offers a chance
for "neighbors to meet neighbors", nays one official. It will show resi-
dents and visitors alike that "Durham Region is a good place to work and
play"... "It will give people an idea of what's in their own backyard."
And, there's plenty -- top-notch tourist attractions like Cullen Gardens
and Miniature Village in Whitby and Park -wood Estate in Oshawa-, inter-
esting monuments to our heritage such as the Pickering Museum Village
and Oshawas Canadian Automotive Museum: great shopping places like
the Pickering Town Centre: fine dining establishments: excellent live
theatre: super recreation facilities-, lively nigbtclubs...The list goes on and
on. In fact, there's so much to do here that there's really no need to leave
the Region. It's definitely a great place to live, work and play.
Celebrate that fact. Don't stay cooped up at home in the belief that
Merr:s nothine to do in the Region because there's a lot to do. See for
yourself. Join the party and Celebrate Durham.
Letters to
the editor
Darts and
laurels
To the editor,
Please permit me to offer a year end "Laurel" and "Dart" to two
recent letters to the News Advertiser.
The "Laurel" goes to the 15 -year-old "boy in a hurry to be a man" -
Mike Biggs; who, with nothing particular to do, wandered into former
MP Rene Soetens' constituency office, and offered his service to re-
elect Rene, i.e. signs, canvassing, etc.
Even though his efforts were in vain, his intentions were noble
indeed, and, for this, he should get top marks.
No one could dare predict the terrible outcome for the governing
party last October 25th - even though they appeared to be "deep in their
own zone, down by 33-0" with 22 seconds to play; and a major penalty
slapped on them for "unnecessary" rough play (lousy TV ads).
I do hope you are wrong, Mike, that Ontario Riding was a loser -
since we, and indeed the country, were in that position for nine years!
May I suggest you seek a book at the Main Library in Ajax titled
"Pledge of Allegiance" - a most enlightening novel of our Canadian
political scene.
The "Dart" goes to a chap named Terry Hayes for his sarcastic swipe
at those wonderful Willards of water -safety awareness - may our Town
be blessed with more like them.
Jim McLean,

Fishing for jobs
To the editor,
In response to Bob Rae's equity bill (which I object to) let me suggest
that if there are jobs available they should be handed out to Newfoundlan-
ders whose fishing industry is devastated. Tom lou&

Notes from the
news editor
Blare Purdy
Longing for his presence
"'Blank God it's over: she was
saying the other day, trying in
vain to choke back the tears while
taking down the drying tree. "I
hate Christmas!"
The Christmas season is the
worst time of year for her ...as it is
for many people.
Oh, it's not as bad for her as it
is for those who've had a loved
one die. It's not like she can never
again see him alive, never talk to
him, touch him, taste him
No, it's not that bad; it's worse.
Because, she knows, her former
lover is out there somewhere -aid
forever in her heart, in her mind,
in her soul until the day she dies
the final dead[.
For she's already died thou-
sands of times -- once for every
day they've been apart. Some-
times, as she's crying herself to
sleep, alone in her bed, clutching
the pillow where he should be,
she wishes she'd never wake up
again.
"Because this isn't living," she
says. "This is dying...a slow death.
I can't live without him."
As she wipes her eyes dry and
pulls her hair back, it's etched
clearly on her face that she knows
she'll never love another, that
there'll never be a connection like
the one they shared. One look in
her eyes, no matter how moist or
dry, tells the most distant of
strangers she's still in love --
deeply, madly, crazily -- with
someone out there somewhere.
Someone beyond compare.
The Christmas tree lights shine
no longer now. Oh, the irony of it!
How they used to shine when they
were together. She was positively
aglow; he could light up a room
just by entering.
She reaches carefully to the top
of the tree for the tiny, perfect
angel that sits there. She takes it
down carefully, remembering that
his pet [tame for her was 'Angel',
how he'd joke that he lived at
'Cloud 9', that they'd one day
reside in postal code 'HEA VEN.
A tear in her eye turns into a twin-
kle with the memories.
But, the twinkle disappears
when the reality sets in again --
that they don't share 'HEA VEN,
that she's living in Hell. It doesn't
help to remind her that there are
countless people like her out there
who've lost a love they'll never
replace.
She only canes about one per-
son out there. And she'll think
about him every minute of every
day until next Christmas. When
her presents won't matter. It's his
presence she wants.

:\t Sylvan Learning
Centresrm, we can help
kids do better in every-
thing from reading and
writing to basic math and
algebra. We begin with a
test to identify strengths
and weaknesses. Then we
develop a customized
program that will
improve your child's
learning skills and study
habits. Just a couple of
hours a week at Sylvan®
and you'll begin to look
at report cards a little
differently.

Hello and welcome back to
Name Dropping, the column
that's been on a holiday break.
Well we're back and we have a
number or special occasions to
tell you about, so without fur-
ther ado...
Natalie Pratt turned 25 Dec.
30 and was feted with lawn deco-
rations, flowers, super gifts, din-
ner out and a surprise party at
Second Storey. We're told the
celebration "created lots of fun,
surprises and tears. We love you
Nat"' from all your friends and
family...
Natalie Pratt
The following came across the
Name Dropping desk: "Happy
Birthdav and New Year 1994 to
Lucy from MacKenzie, Jeffrey,

Angela, Rita, Paul, Marian,

many nieces and -nephews. Love
from us all." Lucy's birthday was
on New Year's Day...
Happy Birthday wishes to a
special little guy, Byron Young,
who turned five on Jan. 5. Send-
ing their love are Mommy,
Daddy, big sister Tamara and
Hobart the dog. Special wishes
also from Grandma and Grand-
pa Young in Arizona and Grand-
ma and Grandpa Greenaway in
Georgetown. Byron celebrated
with his family and friends at a
birthday party at home Jan. 8...

special thank
you to the staff Caroline Andrews
of Sick Chil-

of love, were Mommy, Daddy,
Bryan and Pal...
Jan. I was particularly special
for Rachelle Dwyer and Andrew
Slater, as the couple became
engaged that day. Rachelle and
Andrew, both from Ajax, are hop-
ing to tie the knot in late August.
Both families are "absolutely
delighted" at the news...
Elvis lives. In fact, Gene `The
Ding' Baker turned 34 on Jan. 7
(a day after the birthdate of anoth-
er Elvis) and he celebrated his big
day by eating meatloaf and
mashed Caters. Instead of a birth-
day cake, Gene, in honor of his
idol Elvis, will chow down on a
couple dozen jelly donuts. Wish-
