(Unemployment in the Toronto area, including Ajax and Pickering, is about 11.6 per cent, above the provincial rate of 9.9 per cent.) Of the housing permits issued, almosthalf were for single detached units. _. Meanwhile, there were increases in the value of permits issued for commercial and industrial construction and in the amount of new floor space added compared to the previous year. Those increases, the reports notes, are "indicative of a private - sector recovery." In Ajax and Pickering, among the larger building permits issued from July to September were one valued at S8.5 million in Picker- ing for a six -storey apartment, another worth $7 million in Ajax for the Costco warehouse outlet and one of $6 million in Ajax for a new community centre. One of the aims of the Asthma Out -Reach Program is to reduce hospital admissions for all asth- matics. The Durham Region Lung Association operates the free drop-in program, with local ses- sions offered Wednesdays, Jan. 12, 19 and 26, at 6:30 p.m. at Ajax -Pickering General Hospital. It's this very process that will determine what happens in 1994. What things get done and what gets shelved and, ultimately, what tax increase will get passed on to us. The Town of Pickering begins its budget process with meetings scheduled for January 13 and 14, 1994. Currently, the budget projections call for an increase of nearly 5 perc,:nt over 1993. Our group is outraged that one of the councillors plans to attend a "covey leadership" course in Provo, Utah at a cost to us tax payers of $3,500 U.S. (nearly S5,000 Canadian). It is this type of spending without regard for the tax payer that infuriates us. We all know 1993 was a tough year where bus service was curtailed, municipal staff were given time off without pay, hiring of firefighters was delayed, town operated facilities were closed for social contract days yet certain council members continue to approve out of country expenses which we feel are totally inappropriate. Representatives of our group will be making representation before council in an effort to put an end to this type of spending. We urge you to do likewise or call or write or be saddled with this type of spending. To be fair, not all members of council are supporting this type of spending. In 1993 he charged us for nearly 52,000 including transportation, video and audio tapes for a "covey" conference in Rochester, NY.). You bet. Well, some misguided fools still think it's OK to wield lethal weapons at their fellow human beings. The weapons, in this case, are vehicles. They're being made lethal when a drunk ects behind the wheel. What those drunk drivers are doing is tantamount to threatening their own lives and, worse, the lives of other motorist~. And, they continued to do it this past Christmas season. What ever happened to practising good will toward man" The proof comes from the efforts of police to serve and protect us over the holidays when they set up their RIDE patrols to Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere. It was no secret the RIDE campaign was reduced throughout Durham Region at Yuletide due in part to fiscal restraints. While there was a drop in the number of vehicles police pulled over this year, there wasn't a simi- lar dip in the number of drunk drivers they nabbed. Keep in mind, we're talking about the number of impaired motorists caught. We have no idea how many drivers had too many, got behind the wheel and turned their vehicles into lethal weapons. It's a sad commentary indeed that the biggest deterrent to drunk driv- ing seems to be the threat of getting caught, that some people only give up the deadly practice when they know there's an increased chance they'll get nabbed, tined, have their insurance rates hiked and lose their licence. They seem to be more concerned about the inconvenience they may be caused than the camace they could create. How, many RIDE programs will it take for some people to learn it's not alright to drive drunk' How many times must they be told? How many lives must be lost'' It seems the message won't sink in to some people until they're sunk in themselves — sunk in six feet under. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Lights a group effort To the editor, Recently, prior to a Pickering council meeting, my wife and I were awarded the "Mayor's Christmas Light Tour" plaque for 1993. The plaque was presented by Ward 1 Councillor Doug Wellman. This was indeed an honor but let me clarify a few points. Our Christmas light display is a neighborhood affair. That is the way our neighborhood works! Our "corner" has become known for its Christmas display for that reason. Yes, there is competition, but above all, the spirit of Christmas prevails. These are tough times. Our Christ- mas display gives neighbors from both sides of the Bay a reason to visit our 'Corner' and for a few minutes, forget their troubles. We extend our thanks to the seniors who voted for our neighborhood as well as the Mayor, the sponsor of the award. But most of all, we thank our neigh- bors for their strong community spirit. Peter Chalmers, Pickering Have your say: In Defense of Smokers Rights To the editor, Smokers do have rights in a private smokers' hall, with their own special air ventilation and circulations system. In a general public area, the smoke is distributed through the air ventilation and recirculation system equally, to smokers and non-smokers, endangering everybody's health, irrespective of which comer you or the smoker is seated, Smokers do have the right to smoke but do not have the right to endanger the health of non-smokers. I truly hope the governments do establish "a smoker's room" with their very own air conditioning system. They do have the right to smoke. I wonder what Sir Walter Rallie must be thinking now?
