Ontario's road accident insurance Ontario Insurance Ontario Commission 1 Puffing I s no health hazard, smoker says By MAURICE SINIMS Special to the News Advertiser PICKERING - Smokers' rights advocate Gordon Potts is threatening legal action against the Town's new smoking bylaw. He says, "I'm getting a court injunction. That bylaw won't be going in on Jan. 1." Mr. Potts, founder and direc- tor of the Smokers' Defence League, made the comments last Monday night after unsuccess- fully trying to get Pickering council to rescind the bylaw. The new bylaw comes into effect Jan. 1 and bans smoking in public places, such as the Town hall and recreation com- plex. "It's safer to smoke than to stand outside this building," G= charged the .' Pickering resi- dent. • 't "Environmen- tal agencies all Gordon Potts over the world 'Infringement tell us that on my rights' vehicular pollu- tion is one of the greatest hazards we face." He said the World Health Organization was wrong in say- ing smoking kills. "Smoking does not kill. Cigarette and tobacco smoke does not kill. They've put on such a fantastic propaganda campaign they've got a lot of people believing them." He addressed council with a raspy voice and a cough, saying it wasn't caused by smoking. "It's caused by the flu, not by smoking." If smoking was a killer, gov- ernments around the world would have banned it, but not one government has, Mr. Potts said. "The federal government says I can smoke, if I pay for it. It's quite legal and legitimate and yet local councils across the country are saying you can't smoke here and you can't smoke there. "This new bylaw is an infringement on my rights and is grossly unfair to the citizens of this town." He said the bylaw could be illegal, having been approved by council's seven members, all non-smokers, with little public input. Ward 2 regional councillor Kip Van Kempen replied, "I lost my dad last month to throat can- cer and the doctors said it was directly attributable to smoking. I've had plenty of input." Council decided against tak- ing any action. YWNLWS AbVERtlS1;11; WtD, DECEMSER$0,1W.10AI GLe" tm f 0 Exe u ive I i Paint Plas in Ajax held its annual barbecue to raise money for the United Way. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Reflections of a morning runner To the editor: As the morntnes ect slichtly colder I have noticed an increase in the number of vehicles sittine in driveways and idling. For the past 3 years I've studied car usage to north Ajax and the statistics tell a wasteful story. On my 9 km, 2 lap run between 6 a.m. and 6:45 am. I see (on average. at this time of year) about 50 vehicles idling for 5 minutes er more. The average time is over 10 minutes while some regularly idle for over 20 minutes. Last vcar. two vehicles at one house idled for over 25 min- utes while the same time was recorded by a school bus. These are daily occurrences and do not include any vehicles on adjacent streets or anv vehicles before 6 a.m. or after 6:45 a.m. Any car manual can tell you that lone idling (over 2 minutest is of no benefit to a car motor and in fact can be very harmful. It is also an incredible waste of fuel as if the drivers quite literally had "money to burn". Driving habits in Ajax are also pathetic and even bazaar. Driving on the left side of the road seems a popular pastime lately. I've often seen cars pass each other by yielding to the left! Sig- naling is just about unheard of, while stop signs are simply ignored. Don't believe me? Well try this statistic out. I counted over 1.000 drivers in a row, in the month of October who turned right at stop signs and didn't stop behind the sidewalk. A driver who almost hit me once asked why I run on the road, and I told him that it was safer. If I was on the side- walk he would have killed me. The reasons are simple 1. In win- ter the sidewalks are usually not cleared or they are blocked with parked cars. 2. The 1,000 drivers I counted all had the same faults. They looked left while turning right. It is the most common of all driver errors. They look in the opposite direction and accelerate. Of course, that is done after that have also driven past the side- walk. I therefore run on the road so that i can see that extra two metres before I'm run over. Ajax drivers really don't look where they are going. Well 99.9 per cent anvway. Oh 1 saw, a driver look both ways, signal and stop correct- ly in November! I guess after wasting fuel idling, and not looking where they are going the next fault is unnec- essary trips. Over 80 per cent of the vehicles which get on the 401 at Westney contain only one per- son, but that's another story. E PICKERING 428-0310 EMM Morals, DURHAM - Morals and money were hotly debated issues at the public school board this year. A series of controversial sex education videos were okayed by Durham Board of Education trustees early in 1993 after months of controversy. Some parents and teachers were offended by a number of issues discussed in the videos, including orgasms and masturba- tion, and were angry issues such as marriage and commitment were ignored. Others believed the videos promoted homosexuality and promiscuity. The board decided the Growing Up Series would no longer be shown to students beginning in Grade 4, but in Grade 7 instead. Principals were also told to notify parents when the videos would be shown, giving them the option of pulling their children from that particular class. Debate on the issue has since ceased. Concerned Citizens for Pro- gressive Sexual Education formed to challenge lobbyists wanting abstinence -only lessons in sex education classes. The group argued family -life education should reflect a world that includes gays, lesbians, bisexuals and non-traditional families. Tanya Gulliver (formerly Koch), a Whitby trustee and active group member, later 'came out' as Canada's first admittedly bisexual woman politician. She hopes her move will help gays, lesbians and other bisexuals. Meanwhile, tough economic times continued to haunt the board, which passed on an average mill rate increase of 4.55 per cent when it approved a S381.1 -million budget in May. It lost some 50 teachers, many in special educa- tion, and cut in half a Grades 7 and 8 family studies and design technology course. money debated at publi*c board And, beginning in September, yellow school buses stopped pick- ing up high school students in those municipalities with a full public transit system. Families must now dig into their own pock- ets to pay for bus passes. The board refused to reverse its budget decision, despite appeals and a protest by several hundred angry parents and students at Pine Ridge Secondary School in Pick- ering in early October. Social contract talks overshad- owed much of the spring and sum- mer, as the Province imposed a three-year wage freeze on all pub- lic sector employees. Though the board saw more than 1,500 of its educators protest the contract at a June rally, teach- ers promised extra -curricular activities would not be threatened. The board will lose 106 ele- mentary teachers over the next three years as it meets conditions laid down in the contract. Most of those cuts will be reached by not replacing retiring teachers and not hiring new teach- ers when student population grows. An agreement hasn't yet been reached with highschool teachers. Other happenings, in chrono- logical order: :..I A mini -village designed to teach children about pedestrian and traffic safety was given the green light in February. Kids' Town Safety Centre will be built at Kathleen Rowe Memorial Pub- lic School in Whitby and should open soon. O Tough economic times likely accounted for a record number of students who attended summer school throughout the Region. Almost 2,650 students — up 1,000 from the previous year — enrolled. ❑ In September, room was made for new teachers at the board after trustees shut the door on PICKERING URGENT CARE MEDICENTRE WALK -INC LINIC- PEN 7 DAYS A WEEK • • WEEKDAYS 9109 SATURDAYS 9 to 4 • ` SUN..'HOLIDAYS 10 to 3 • Full Family Medical Care On-site • Urgent Care • Pharmacy 9 • Laboratory • Covered by OHIPVCBI • X Ray -Ultrasound Out of Province Insurance • Eye Examinations FAMILY PHYSICIANS • Perviz Alidina MD • Paul Laroche MD • Andrea Woloszczuk MD • Diamond Alidina MD Walk-in To Pickering Square Plaza .1450 Kingston Rd. at Valley Farm Rd., Pickering Call 831-8240 For Information &/or Appointments ,ee4 LOOK AT US NOW 1994 AJAA tsirvcav at ASSOCIATION countty UP TO $5,500 a NEW 54 SPECIAL "NEW" LIGHTNING FOR MORE INFORMA710N PLEASE CALL 4Z%-85%2 ; AJAX ROTARY HOSPICE DURHAM PINE RIDGE SEC. Changing curriculum and cuts in support staff due to tough eco- nomic times were cited as among their grievances. Meanwhile, the board spoke of the need to address social services, overcrowded schools, co-operative education and teacher.training. The S3 -million commission was established by the Province to recommend changes to legislation, structures, policies and procedures to improve the education system. ❑ Provincial plans to deal with violence in schools was applauded by board officials and teachers when announced in November. The board is already working with Durham Regional Police to address school violence and believes the community as a whole must work together to cre- ate a safer environment. An Ontario study determined almost one-half of the board's advanced Grade 12 students are not writing at acceptable English standards. a EIA BAYLY'S . ` 7 J ^ and G NEW YEAR'S EYE DINNER & PARTY% D.J. 4 Course New York Sirloin Dinner Prizes 0 O Wine at Dinner Champagne COUPLE ,^1 s V5 . u sec.,-' Party Favours ,, Panes Over 10 A LIMO WILL DRIVE YOU HOME IN AJAX AND PICKERING Tickets For reservations call > on 427-1888 Sale 368 Bayly St. (east of westney) Ajax e , . . . , I , , . , . Here, the News Advertiser looks back at the big sporting achievements of'93: HOCKEY U Pickering Kinsmen atom rep 'B' hockey team is the best in Ontario. The Pickering squad won the all - Ontario title after blanking the Grimsby Peach Kings 4-0 in the final game in Grimsby in April. ❑ Three area hockey players were drafted by Ontario Hockey League's major junior league teams at the midget draft in London in June. Ryan Lowe, a goaltender with the Ajax/Pickering 'AAA' midget Raiders was drafted in the sixth round by the Kingston Frontenacs. Jason Reesor, a Stouffville native who played for the Pickering Pan- thers last season, was drafted in the fourth round by the Niagara Falls Thunder. Ryan Connolly, a Picker- ing native and a member of the Pickering Panthers last year, was taken in the 11 th round by the Sud- bury Wolves. J The Durham West Girls' Hockey Association (DWGHA) took the ice in November for the first time. The organisation, which provides hock- ey for girls in Ajax and Pickering, had a special night at the Pickering Village Arena, including a puck - dropping ceremony involving the mayors of both towns and other dig- nitaries. FOOTBALL J The Pickering High School Tro- jans senior football team had a bit- tersweet year on the gridiron. The team emerged as champions of the Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) league, beating the Oshawa Paul Dwyer Saints 4(}- 0 in the championship final. In the Durham York Secondary School Athletic Association (DYSSAA) finals, they handily defeated the Markham District High School Marauders. However, the Trojans, heavily favored in the Metro Bowl semi-finals, were stopped 14-7 by the Toronto champion St. Michael College Kerry Blues. Meanwhile, the Pine Ridge Sec- ondary School Pumas junior foot- ball squad emerged as LOSSA champs for the second year in their two years of existence in the league with a 35-31 win over Pickering Glenn Healy 1993 was a weird year for Pickering native and NHL goaltender Glenn Healy to say the least. While out of the country enjoying a trip in Ireland prior to the start of the 1993-94 hockey season, Healy went from being an Islander, to being a Duck, to being struck by Lightning, then winding up back where it all began — in New York, but in a different uniform. Healy was unprotected by the :y Islanders in the expansion draft to stock new NNI. teams Anaheim and Florida this past summer. In a round -about way. he was drafted by the Anaheim !Mighty Ducks, then drafted again by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the second phase of the draft. He was then dealt to the New York Rangers where he was signed to a mulit- year contract as a free agent. The Rangers' goaltending tandem of Healy and Mike Richter is currently num- ber -one in the NHL in goals -against, while the team itself is perched atop the league's overall standings. However, the bulk of the goaltending load has been handled by Richter who's currently the hottest netminder in the league. Healy has started 11 games so far this season, winning eight. The 1993 playoffs represented Healy's finest play in his NHL career. The veteran goalie was a big part of the reason why the New York Islanders knocked off two-time defending Stanley Cup champi- on Pittsburgh Penguins with a 4-3 overtime victory in game seven of the Patrick Division final in Pittsburgh in May. "It's tough to put into words," says Healy, contacted by the News Advertiser at his Montreal hotel room, prior to game two in the Mon- treal -New York Stanley Cup semi-final series. "It's something we all worked hard for. It's as sweet as it gets. Without Pierre (Turgeon) in the fine -up we weren't expected to win a game, let alone the series. It was a real thrill." Nigel Wilson Ajax resident Nigel Wilson finished a successful first year of base- ball in the National League Florida Marlins organization. The outfielder played a full season with the upstart Marlin's 'AAA' affiliate in Edmonton. Wilson was sup- posed to be one of the Marlins' late -sea- son call-ups, but an injury denied him his first taste of baseball at the major league level. In the off-season prior to the start of the 1993 season, Wilson was in big demand at various card shows. He made autograph appearances at card shows in and around Toronto, as well as a special appearance at a card show in Ajax in Jan- uary. He also flew to Florida for shows in Miami and St. Petersburg. In 1992, Wilson was the second pick overall and the first pick of the National League's Florida Marlins in Major League Baseball's expansion draft in the summer of 1992. He was drafted from the Toronto Blue Jays. High. Pine Ridge was defeated for the DYSAA title by Markham 44- 23. U Two Ajacians, Andrew Stinson and Stuart Brindle, played with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues football teams which cap- tured the Vanier Cup, emblematic of national university football supremacy. The Varsity Blues defeated the University of Calgary Dinos 37-34 at SkyDome in November. Stinson was a special team player, while Brindle was the U of T place kicker. VOLLEYBALL 'Ajax High School grad Kelly Bre- utigam, 22, led the Thunder Bay - based Lakehead University Lady Nor'Westers volleyball team to first place in the Ontario Women's Interuniversity Athletic Association (OWIAA) western division this season. She led the squad in every department, including total kills, 0 Mores orfs year-end review kills per game, total aces and aces per game. She was also named to in Sunday's News AcWser the west division all-star team for the second time in two years. F,•••.-.•..........................•--1 GRAND OPE,' N ' aJ .i7.
