Minnie gets new home
FROM PAGE Al
"Every time we passed by the
garden, we smiled, remembering
Elisabeth in her Minnie boots,
with her Minnie puppet always
stuffed in her backpack."
The Tucker family's grief
touched the
heart of Carol
Mintz, a Picker-
ing folk art
instructor
whose son was
being treated in
hospital for a
low white
blood cell count
when she read
the article.
"As soon as
I read it, I
thought, 'I have
to do something
about this!"
Mrs. Mintz
recalls. "I really
felt bad for these people" and
saw it as an opportunity to show
her three sons that "you can do
something from the goodness of
your heart and you don't have to
expect something in return."
She found many others were
willing to help. The owners of
Superior Home & Design, Lynda
and Richard Napadek, made a
mould of Minnie Mouse, while
Lymbird Lumber provided the
wood — all at no charge. Her
husband Gordon cut the figure.
Though Mrs. Mintz never saw
the original figure, the one she
painted was "lovely. It was
almost identical to Elisabeth's
Halloween costume," reports
Mrs. Tucker, who didn't learn of
the figure until it was complete.
The school plans to hang the
new figure inside the kinder-
garten door overlooking the gar-
-4
ar-
den early in the new year. It's
brought a lot of happiness to
staff and students, according to
principal Bryan Butler.
"There are so many good peo-
ple out there, but it only takes
one person to leave a sour taste
in your
mouth," he
says of the
theft of the
original fig-
ure. "I'm hop-
ing it was an
act of vandal-
ism as
opposed to a
desecration of
a memorial."
Elisabeth's
death "had a
very big
impact on our
school," Mr.
Butler recalls.
"It took a lot
out of us ... The memorial was
very helpful" and was so respect-
ed by students that "no one
walked on it or threw garbage
anywhere near it."
That's why the school was "so
disappointed" when Minnie
Mouse was stolen.
"Minnie Mouse is back," says
Mrs. Mintz. "I think I made a lot
of people happy. I hope so,
because that was my goal."

Pickering caps forest contribution-to''$40OG
By MAURICE SIMMS
Special to the News Advertiser
PICKERING - The Town will
contribute $400,000 towards the
purchase and preservation of the
Alton Forest.
Pickering councillors approved
that amount Monday and not
$800,000 requested by the
Metropolitan Toronto and Region
Conservation Authority
(MTRCA).
The conservation authority is
trying to raise $3.8 million towards
the $13.8 million cost of buying
land, cleaning up some of the
property, and building fences. The
Ontario government has offered a
$10 -million grant if the MTRCA
can raise the difference.
The provincial grant was
described by Ward 2 regional
councillor Kip Van Kempen as
"beyond our wildest expectations."
But, Ward 3 regional councillor
Rick Johnson said the $10 -million
grant was not all it seemed.
The MTRCA wants to buy
more land than Pickering had in
mind, he said, and this would cut
into land earmarked for develop-
ment.
"There are services in there and
land is ready to be developed," Mr.
Johnson said. "There were 1,200
housing units in the original plan,
which has been cut to 600 units.
"There were 600 homes built in
Pickering last year, so that's one
year's progress gone already. This
municipality is going to lose a lot
more money than we're talking
about giving to the conservation
authority."
When the contribution came to
council for approval Monday,
Chalmers home a light delight
PICKERING - The home of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Chalmers at 861
Vicki Drive in Pickering is an absolute delight with Christmas lights,
says mayor Wayne Arthurs.
And Town council has given the Chalmers the annual award for the
most outstanding decorated home.
"Over the past three or four years, that corner has become an abso-
lute delight to drive by," said the mayor. "It's very much appreciated by
all those who stop by."

MTRCA official Craig Mather
argued for an increase to $720,000,
which he said would encourage
Durham Region and private
sources to make large contribu-
tions.
He pointed out the provincial
government normally funds only
50 per cent for such projects and
the grant of S10 million was
unusual.
Mr. Van Kempen said Picker-
ing's contribution was critical
because support of the project by
all levels of government was need-
ed for the next step.
"We've approached the federal
government and it's important to
demonstrate everyone's doing their
fair share," Mr. Van Kempen said.
Mr. Johnson added, "I don't
want anyone to think I want to
pave everything over. We've done
our share to preserve green space.
We have the Greenwood Conser-
vation Area, the Claremont Con-
servation Area and we have 43,000
acres under provincial and federal
ownership, on which there's to be
no development.
"I'm having difficulty support-
ing a contribution of $400,000 and
I'm against anything more."

Take the time

At such a busy time of the year, it is easy to get caught up in the
craziness. the panicked comings- and goinos, and to forget the point of
it all. `
What is the use in dashing from place to place for the perfect gift.
the perfect turkey. the panics, the concerts and the like if all it nets us
is exhausbon and a bad disposition"
For those of us Aho celebrate Christmas, the trimmings and the
customs are as different from person to per\on as our very different
ethnic backgrounds.
For some the holiday remains a deeply reln-ious one and for others.
for a variety of religious and cultural reasons, the focus is not so tradi-
tional.
But once we cut away all the tissue and taLs, is there not one thread
of continuity and sameness for us all? Is Christmas not plain]\ a time
for famil\ and friends. a time for reflection on our own lives and a
time to celebrate thejo} of living, despite all its trials and tribulations:'
In between all the rushing around let us take the time to enjoy the
wide-eyed wonder of childhood. for family fun and for friendship.
And let us make time for those we may have forgotten in the rush:
A shut-in. a senior alone, a neglected friendship.
All it may take is a phone call, a shoe note or some Christmas cheer
to help make someone else's holiday the tiniest hit brighter. Chnsunas
is a time to celebrate life. your~ and their',.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Mr. Wiseman: Hire the
best qualified candidate
To the editor:
I recently received a letter from our
Member of Provincial Parliament, Jim
Wiseman. This letter made some surpris-
ing statements that I feel are worth shar-
ing.
In commenting on the hiring practices
of the provincial government. Mr. Wise-
man claims that "As a government we
have not been responsible in soliciting
and hiring the best qualified applicants."
Mr. Wiseman goes on to suggest that the
best way to deal with this problem is
through employment equity legislation.
Does anyone, other than Mr. Wiseman,
actually believe that racism can eliminate
racism.
Mr. Wiseman believes that if the gov-
ernment were to hire based on quotas,
where certain target groups were given
preferential treatment, the government
would then be hiring the best qualified
applicants. Maybe in the "politically cor-
rect" world of Mr. Wiseman this is possi-
ble. Unfortunately, I fail to see the rela-
tionship between quotas and quality.
Mr. Wiseman should do everyone a
favor and take the "politics" out of
"politically correct" and simply do what
is right. Hire the best qualified candidate.

Scrooge steals
hockey net
Letter to the editor:
This past weekend our %oung boys were given a '
hockev net from their uncle and aunt for Christmas.
They were absolutely thrilled with it' Unfortunately, this
past Tuesday night it was taken from our carport from
our home on Tatra Drive in Pickering. Our boys are very
upset and very confused as to why someone 'A'ould take
their Christmas present. We would appreciate our help
in trying to get their net back. If you could publish this
letter perhaps someone could provide the paper with
information regarding its whereabouts. Apart from mak-
ing the children very happy, getting the net back would
teach the children that there are people who care and are
willing to help which is the opposite of the harsh lesson
in life they got this week. Thank you for your help.

DURHAM - There has been an
"excellent" public response so far
to the Durham Regional Police
Association's Christmas toy and
food drive, but more donations are
still needed.
"We're looking at about 44 van
loads (of food and toys) delivered
so far," said drive co-ordinator San-
dra Mackey on Monday. "We're
still hoping that people will contin-
ue to donate."
She noted there is a greater need
in the community this year, since
eight additional agencies have
asked drive organizers for help in

families. As well, the agencies thel
drive have helped in the past have,
more people than before. ;
There is a particular need for
toys and baby food for children one
year old and under. Drive organiz-
ers have already received a good
response to their request for gifts
for children I l to 14 years old.
Anyone wishing to donate
unwrapped toys or non-perishable
food may phone the drive's Christ-
mas hotline (427-1620) to have
their contribution picked up.
Donations may also be dropped
off at all fire halls and police sta-
tions in Durham Region.

What to do with turkey leftovers
Next week many of my read-
ers will be looking for ways to
use up every scrap of the Christ-
mas turkey. As turkey can be a
substitute for chicken in most
recipes, there are lots of deli-
cious ways to enjoy the bird.
The Glad Use -it -Up Cook-
book suggests adding chopped
turkey to a can of creamed celery
soup. Also add sauteed onion,
cooked peas and heat. Serve over
biscuits seasoned with one-quar-
ter teaspoon of curry powder.
The Creative Cook's Recy-
cling Book by Ruth Johnson
offers the following Boxing Day
Pate:
1 cup (250 ml) turkey bits, put
through a meat grinder
1/2 cup (125 ml) butter
1 tbsp. (15 ml) dry sherry
1/2 tsp. (2 ml) salt
pinch each of ground cloves
and black pepper
1/2 tsp (2 ml) lemon juice
2 drops liquid hot pepper
1/4 cup (50 ml) butter, melted
Mix ground turkey with but-
ter, sherry, seasoning and lemon
juice. Blend thoroughly or puree.
Put in mould or individual pots.
Pour melted butter over the
surface. Chill. Serve with melba
toast.

Less than merry? Rediscover
the meaning of Christmas
AJAX-PICKERING - If the
hustle and bustle and financial
strain of Christmas has you feeling
less than merry, it might be time to
rediscover the true meaning of the
season.
Attending religious services and
refusing to feel pressured into giv-
ing gifts can help make the holi-
days more meaningful, advises
Rev. Glenn Brown of Dunbarton-
Fairport United Church, Pickering.
"There's a difference between
giving out of joy and giving
because you feel you're supposed
to give," he observes. "Give only
as long as it's a joyful experience."
Attending church services
throughout the season, not just on
Christmas Eve, can help add spiri-
tual meaning to the holidays, he
adds. "From a religious standpoint,

the real joy of Christmas does not
come from within ourselves but is
a gift from God."
There are many in the commu-
nity who have never heard the bib-
lical Christmas story and who don't
know the significance of nativity
scenes, he says. "There are increas-
ing numbers of young families
coming to church. Parents want
their kids to learn that."
The commercialism of Christ-
mas has its positive aspects, Rev.
Brown believes. Many of the
images we have of the holidays,
such as families gathering in front
of the fireplace, stem from the Vic-
torian era when the season was
romanticized, he says.
"Commercialism deserves
credit for some of the things we do
at Christmas. The down side is the
pressure on everybody to have a
good time. That extends to people
who can't afford it."

'Tis the season for
Santa stories
By LINDA WHITE
Staff Reporter
AJAX-PICKERING - They're
lined up wearing their Sunday
best, anxious to meet the one
man who really knows if they've
been bad or good.
But, while Santa never tires of
listening to the wishes of hun-
dreds, there are some wishes he
can never fill. "A grandmother
came up to see me, maybe for
the last time," recalls Santa at
the Pickering Town Centre. "She
had tears in her eyes and told me
her cancer had reactivated. Natu-
rally, I had tears in my eyes,
too.,,
However, most of Santa's vis-
itors are wishing for toys.
"I've been pretty good,"
admits Katie Irvine, 5, as she
awaits her visit with Santa.
Though she even knows "how
many days there arc 'til Christ-
mas," she's not quite sure what
she'll ask Santa to pack in his
sleigh for her.
That's not a problem for Jesse
Adams, 7, and his sister Breigh-
Anne, 4, who are hoping for a
McDonald's kitchen set, which
will give them a chance to test
their culinary talents.
Lisa Wray, 7, isn't taking any
chances on forgetting her wish
list and is armed with a letter
asking for a Puppy Surprise,
book light and a book. Her sister
Nicole, 5, has a firm grip on a
letter asking for a Rub a Dub
Doggie and Silly Putty.
Though Ashley Keller, 8, is
certain she wants a puppy, she's
worried Santa won't be able to
find her when she moves to Van-
Santa Claus
couver just before Christmas.
"I'm going to ask him if he
knows where I'll be."
But it's not likely the North
Pole's most famous resident will
forget, as he listens intently to
all wish lists.
"Santa sometimes has to prod
them," admits the jolly fellow.
"But once you get them going,
you just can't keep them quiet. I
let them go until they run out of
gas. Some have a list as long as
your arm, back and forth across
the room. I just look at their par-
ents and laugh."
When asked what he wanted
for Christmas, one youngster
asked Santa, "Have you got a
catalogue?"
Power Rangers top the list of
requests this year, according to
the man in the know. "Boys and
girls are all asking for them. I'm
worried we won't be able to pro-
duce enough."
That's why he asks children
for a "back up." Most would be
pleased with toys from Aladdin,
Beauty and the Beast and other
favorite movies, while dolls
remain favorites for girls.
"One boy akked for a
nutcracker — the utensil to crack
nuts. I just about dropped when I
heard that one," laughs Santa,
his eyes crinkling at the corners.
But kids "haven't trimmed
their lists down," he notes, tug-
ging at his cottony white beard.
"They're going for the pricey
stuff like Nintendo."
Still, not all are prepared for
the excitement of seeing the
infamous fellow. "I've seen my
share of kids who just won't say
a thing. They just put the brakes
on and stall. But you can't blame
the children. It's the parents who
get them all geared up. Some
break out into tears."
Santa also hears lots of con-
fessions. "When I ask them if
they're behaving and if they're
helping mommy around the
house and picking up their toys,
most say 'Yes.'
"But some admit they're
sometimes bad and fight with
their brother or something. But
they assure me they're going to
try not to do that anymore."
Others are armed with "all
kinds of questions. They want to
know what I'm going to do with-
out snow. I tell them Santa's
sleigh doesn't need snow to fly.
"I remind them they won't see
me on Christmas Eve, 'cause
they have to be asleep. If they're
not fast asleep, Santa goes to
other houses until they are."

PICKERING - No early
Christmas presents were forth-
coming for the Pickering Pan-
thers this weekend.
Losses number 19 and 20
came down the pipe for the Pan-
thers, courtesy of the Thornhill
Islanders and the Caledon Cana-
dians, in Metro Junior 'A' Hock-
ey League action.
On the road in Caledon Sun-
day night, the Panthers gave up
six unanswered goals in the final
period to drop a 9-5 decision to
the Canadians.
t On Friday night,
the Panthers were
doubled 6-3 by the
visiting Islanders at
the Pickering
Recreation Com-
plex.
The losses puts
the Panthers' league
record at onewin,
20 losses and three
ties for five points
in the league's
Bauer Division.
The Panthers led
through most of the
contest against
Caledon, the sec-
ond -place club in
the league's Fullan
division, holding a
4-2 edge after the
first period. Picker-
ing continued to

PICKERING - While the Pickering
Panthers are Will striving to salvage what
can best be described as a frustrating
1993-94 campaign, the eyes of the orga-
nization are looking toward next season.
The struggling Panthers, who have
five points (1-20-3) to show for 24
Metro Junior 'A' Hockey League games
so far this season are almost assuredly
out of playoff contention. However, the
squad will continue to develop the young
players to form the nucleus of next
year's team, says the team's head coach.
"We're not really writing the year off.
We'll never quit," explains Bud Bower,
who led the team during their glory years
in the early '80s. `But, the number -one
criteria for us now is development. We'll
work with the 18 players we have now,
we'll work with the (Ajax/Pickering
'AAA') midget club in hopes of improv-
ing the club for next year.
"We're not winning every game, but
we're in every game. Winning the games
is not really everything. Teaching is the
important part."
always next yea
r
What's gone wrong with the Panthers
this season? Bower cites too many inex-
perienced players on the roster, too much
turmoil in the coaching staff, and too
much player turnover as the chief rea-
sons the club is mired in last place in the
league's Bauer Division this year.
"This team was bouncing around for
two years and never getting any better.
There was always changes in coaching
and (player) personnel," says Bower,
who took over the coaching reins after
replacing former head coach Brad Ryder
early in the season.
"We do have the nucleus of a real
good hockey team. But, we only have
three experienced hockey players on the
whole team and that's a big mistake, but
we're making the best of it," says
Bower.
However, Bower, since taking over
the club, has attempted to put some sta-
bility back into the organization, bring-
ing in several solid veteran players
including Bill Govedaris, Jason McDon-
ald and Peter Andrikopoulos, while
sticking with a core of rookie players for
long-term development.

This holiday season, give a gift to save a life!
AnLooking for that special gift for family and friends? What
better way to show you care than to give a smoke alarm
or fire extinguisher.
Battery-operated smoke alarms can be real life savers.
When purchasing a smoke alarm, look for the U.L.C.
label which assures that it meets safety standards. You
may even want to include installation as part of your gift.
Ideally, every level of the home should have a smoke
