PICKERING - The Liberal federal government
has grounded the sale of airport lands in Pickenng
until the new minister of transport has reviewed
the process.
"It's going to be on hold,"
says Ontario Riding MP Dan
McTeague of the former Tory
government's plan to sell off.

Minister of Transport Dou-
glas Young will consider the Dan McTeague
views of tenants, community
groups, Pickering council and the provincial gov-
ernment, says Mr. McTeague. "We've all felt (the
sale process) wasn't right and the minister has
agreed to review it in its entirety."
That's good news for tenants living on the
lands, says Bryon Hurde, chairman of a local
group called the Committee for the Pickering Air-
port Community. "I think it's a good thing.
There's a possibility now we can put forward an

being stopped, the booklets are
part of a fund-raising campaign to
help children through the Variety
Club.
Drivers stopped by the OPP
holiday RIDE program this
December will receive something
extra in return for their trouble.
OPP RIDE officers will also be
handing out a pocket -sized card
with a 1994 calendar on it. The
card will also offer a 10 per cent
discount on a winter "Breather"
a two- to three-day holiday at
participating Ontario resorts. It
will also list 1-800 numbers for
Ontario travel information and a
list of resorts participating in the
RIDE promotion.
The promotion is being spon-
sored by the Ontario Ministry of
Culture. Tourism and Recreation
in order to stimulate winter
tourism in the province and to
encourage safe driving.
During their 1992/93 Christ-
mas holiday campaign in Picker-
ing, Ajax and Uxbridge about
17,500 vehicles were stopped by
Durham police. Twelve people
were charged with impaired driv-
ing and related offences, while 66
were charged with liquor and
traffic violations.

The Christmas social season is upon us with the prospect of lots of
parties, business functions and gatherings with family and friends. Unfor-
tunately, there's also the potential for lots of drunk drivers on our roads.
It happens every year. Someone, maybe even you, will decide it's per-
fectly okay to drive because there's not too much alcohol perculating in
the bloodstream. But there is too much and, if you're lucky, the police
will nab you before you kill yourself or someone else.
If you drink, don't get behind the wheel. The combination of alcohol
and driving is lethal.
In an effort to protect us all from impaired motorists, Durham Region-
al Police officially launched the annual RIDE program last Sunday. Two
six -officer units are being dedicated full-time to the program this Christ-
mas and New Year's season.
One unit will patrol Pickering, Ajax and the Uxbridge district, while
another will cover Whitby, Oshawa and the Bowmanville area. They'll
operate day and night — though mostly in the evenings — at locations
across the region.
As in the past, cars will be stopped at random to be checked for

you've been drinking, say a prayer of thanks that you're going to make it
home alive.

The goodies are a nice touch, intended by the provincial ministry of
culture, tourism and recreation to encourage safe driving. But if you think
about it, you can probably come up with some more important in centives
of your own to stay sober.

Rookies often sit out

In 1989, after seven years of
coaching house league baseball
teams, I became involved with the
rep system. Unlike house league
ball, where it's mandatory for all
children to get equal playing time,
rep team members — generally
considered to possess the best
skills at their level of play and
chosen in general, annual try-0ttts
for a team that represents the
Town of Ajax at regional and
provincial tourneys — and most
of their parents understand the
youngsters must earn their play-
ing time, just like in the big
leaTo this end, in rep ball, the
better a player's skills and atti-
tude, the more playing time he or
she gets, especially in critical
games.
t present, most rep divi-
sions span two to three
years of a particular age
group. Therefore, most rookies
know they'll see proportionately
more bench time than a second or
third -year playa. No player likes
to sit on the bench, but most
understand their time will come.
Most will use this experience to
watch and learn and contribute in
any way possible. Any parent
who is critical of this process or
continually badgers a coach about
decisions he makes can only do
more harm than good — for the
team as well as the individual.
I know how it feels to see my
son sitting on the bench after
driving to distant out-of-town
tournaments. Both of my sons
have played in the rep system,
which why I got involved and not
the reason why they made the
teams. Both spent the better part
of their rookie seasons cheering
bn their fellow teammates from
the dugout.
t is part of learning sports-
manship and teamwork. It
is part of learning how to
recognize your own shortcomings
and challenging yourself to
improve. For my sons, it was
enough just to be a pan of the
team even if it meant sitting out
entire games. Whining and/or
parental interference was never a
factor in their eventual success.
As for my own experience and
qualifications, I've coached in all
levels of house league, and from
T -ball to peewee in the rep sys-
tem. I have Level I and Level I1
certification in coaching and
umpiring, and in 1990, was pre-

I've been a member of the Ajax
Spartans Minor Baseball Associa-
tion executive for four terms and
;an -associate member for three,
partly a result of attending 12
annual general meetings, some of
which were so poorly attended by
the public that the executive
members were faced with the
choice of accepting another term
or leaving critical positions
unfilled.
In the last few years, however,
the attitude of "Let somebody else
do it" seems to be changing, and
it is to the current executive's
credit that most of them volun-
teered to remain for another tam,
including myself and my wife.
We are both quite proud of being
a part of the ground -breaking ini-
tiatives that saw an increase of
over 30 per tett in house league
registration, introduced rookie
ball to Ajax, and gave the nod to
all-star teams participating in the
Durham Select League.

Clan, so be it. I'd rather be
criticized for making an
effort to improve baseball in Ajax
than to be known as someone who
whines and complains about the
way the system is run, yet who
doesn't attend the annual general
meeting or volunteer for a term
on the executive to find out first-
hand how "easy" some of the
decisions are to make.
Mrs. Adam's charge that the
executive ignored her concerns or
trivialized them in any way is
simply not we. She was invited
to attend a monthly meeting and
was accorded a full hour -and -a -
half to voice her complaints. The
ASMBA ombudsman was meticu-
kxM fair and completely unbiased
in reviewing all the facts; the
president accepted and made her
ruling based on the decision of
the majority. There was no con-
spiracy. There was no predeter-
mined vote Or conflict of interest.
0 ver the past 12 years, I
have undoubtedly ruf-
fled some feathers and
in the next 12 years, I will
undoubtedly ruffle many more. I
have never claimed to be perfect
or to have all the answers. I can
deal with criticism, I can certainly
hold my own in a verbal con-
frontation — in fact, I welcome it
if the point of contention is logi-
cal and reasonable. But when one
unhappy parent attempts to pub-
licly and maliciously discredit
me, my family and my fellow
executive members, I draw the
line. Especially when the charges
are unfounded, untrue and serve
no other purpose than to vent
someone's misguided frustrations.

Playdowns at the Oshawa Down-
town Curling club on the weekend.
Annandale's John Dean and Bill
McLean rinks failed to move into
the later rounds against fierce com-
petition at the event. Both skips
found the ice conditions to be less
than ideal, which didn't help their
chances.
The Oshawa club will next host
the Blue Light Challenge Round in
late January, when some of the best
teams in the province will compete
for a spot in the provincial men's
finals.

Annandale Curling Club's 30th
anniversary reunion next Feb. 26.
