Among the things you should have in the car to deal with the situation are a blanket, a nash- light, matches, a candle and a tin can. A candle and a tin can? "A candle in a tin can would keep the inside of the automobile warm enough to sustain life," explains Senior Const. Gerry Smith of the OPP's Whitby detachment - Const. Smith developed the series of travel safety tips that are circulated across the province by the OPP in presentations and brochures. The tips include other surprises besides candles and cans. For example, when your car breaks down on the highway, don't raise the hood to attract attention because you may attract the attention of a potential attack- er looking for a vulnerable victim. The hood would also block your view of anyone approaching the car. If your car breaks down, you should stay inside and put a "Call Police" sign in your side or back windows. kuw,6 Aciv t;i-t ijww SUNDAY'S CARRIER OF THE WEEK IS Kaillie enjoys dancing, swimming b baseball. Otherwise, you might be surprised to see how lit- tle space it takes for an assailant to reach right in. Instead, ask the good Samaritan to call the police or auto club for you. These and other travel safety tips are also featured in a soon -to - be -released video entitled "Trav- eling Alone", produced with the aid of the OPP. The video will soon become part of the police presentation and will be made available to individuals or compa- nies interested in educating their employees about travel safety. Speedy :Muffler King has print- ed brochures containing tips from the video, which are available at all their service centres across the province, along with free "Call Police" signs. The OPP's travel safety pro- gram was launched by Const. Smith a little over three years ago, after a home care nursing service asked him to provide a precau- tions plan for their nurses, who spent a lot of time driving on lonely country roads in all kinds of weather. Since then about 15,000 women have seen the safety pre- scntation. "It's been a very popular pro- gram," says Const. Smith. "Once people hear about it we get swamped with calls." It's particularly popular with women who travel on business. They often want to know about keeping safe in hotels and motels as well as on the road. Any group interested in seeing the presentation, free of charge, may contact Const. Smith at 668- 3389. It's about one -and -a -half hours long (including a question period), and there are no pre-;ct require- ments regarding the size of the group. The safety brochures may also be picked up at the OPP detach- ment in Whitby, on Brock St. (Hwy. 12) just north of the GO station. It's because human life carries no price tag that we'd hate to see $1.24 million slashed from the Durham Regional Police 1994 budget. The proposed cutback to police funding is being considered by region- al politicians as they try to hold taxes at the 1993 level. In all, S4.5 million would have to be cut from regional departments to achieve a tax freeze. We're all for trimming the fat from government budgets, but politicians should be careful they're not cutting into muscle. With the economy in the state it's in, you can expect an upswing in crime. It's become commonplace to hear about carjackings, bank rob- beries, muggings, purse snatchings and break and enters. So common- place, in fact, that the majority of home break-ins and purse snatchings here wouldn't even be considered newsworthy by the 'yews Advertiser. But there's more to police work than investigating crimes and arresting bad guys. There's a community aspect to the force that includes educa- tional programs, walking the beat, bicycle patrols and presentations to stu- dents and organizations. You can bet your bottom dollar those things would be cut before cruisers are taken off the road. Just as it would be unwise to put up a fight against a mugger, it would be unwise to underestimate the value of those programs. Anyone who attended the recent Accident Awareness show hosted by Durham Police at the Metro East Trade Centre would undoubtedly agree 'Just looking at the twisted remains of vehicles salvaged from traffic accidents was enough to make your stomach flip and drive home a lot more cautiously than you drove on the way to the show. Just as impressive were the displays and demonstrations that offered a real education on highway safety. Another example can be borrowed from the Ontario Provincial Police, which has recently launched a Travelling Alone video presentation designed to help women cope safely with roadside break -downs. The number of people requesting the presentation proves there's a demand for these kinds of police services. Its also obvious that educational effort, help combat problems police face; anti -drinking and driving messages have hit home after extensive publicity. All regional departments are clamoring for their share of tax dollars, but ket's hope politicians consider the importance of policing carefully. Because we don't want to pay with our lives, we'll pay with our taxes. k, OKAY, NOWWW? IF, a a;•b, • + 1" LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Children big losers in politics o f sports To the editor, This summer I witnessed the most disgusting display of politics in minor baseball. My son was asked to play on the Ajax Major Pee Wee Rep Team. The team's 12 players included eight from last year (some the last three), three friends of the coach's boys and Chad. We told the coach, Rick Strom, we were taking 10-12 days vaca- tion in Myrtle Beach in July. He said that that was playoff time and they would need Chad, so we changed our plans and only took seven days. As it turned out, Chad sat 50- 60 innings more than the original players. I was told by the other coach that it's heartbreaking, and that his son sat the year before. Chad is an aggressive ballplayer, very eager. The coach said he had no problem with Chad, he was always well behaved. The week of June 14-21 Chad did more than his share of sitting. At a Cobourg tournament there was a three-hour rain delay so I told the coach we were leaving if Chad was sitting again as we had to go to Uxbridge due to a death in the family. Well friction occurred. The weekend of holidays (July 18) Chad played one inning Fri- Health ter's 0 priorities mixed up To the editor, A special $650,000 grant was announced on Nov. 10 by Health Minister Ruth Grier to help immigrant and refuge women and women of color overcome alleged discrimination in health. This is an outrageous and slanderous assumption by our Minister of Health based on no fact, only innuendo. At a time when health care is being slashed, Ms. Grier contin- ues to throw away cur hard- earned tax dollars to special interest groups who self perpet- uate by feeding at the public trough. Our community hospital is being cut an additional $900,000 this year due to Bob Rae's Social Contract, which means further bed closures and staff layoffs. Yet grants for political- ly -correct projects continue. Clearly, the Health Minister has her priorities mixed up. She is quite prepared to sacrifice the health of millions of Ontarians for the sake of implementing her political agenda. Romas V. Stas, M.D., President, Durham Medical Society day, a game Saturday and half an inning on the Sunday. He was down 50-60 innings. I told the coach I didn't appreciate what he had done. He freaked and yelled in my face. We shortened our holi- days to return for a tournament to find that Mr. Strom, being manag- er, had dismissed Chad from the team until the executive decided otherwise. I was told to appeal the dismissal. Well Clique and Clan. The coach and his wife were on the executive. The mediator let the coach read my previous letter, then read a list of complaints and put-downs about Chad. The presi- dent, who was sitting with them, asked the executive to move their chairs up and said 'no' to visitors. The vice-president told me that I had had my chance. The mediator said the proof. It's the kids that suffer because of adults' jealousy and animosity. Who loses? It's the children's self- esteem. It will be nearly the same exec- utive next year and they wonder why they don't get volunteers to help. Mrs. McDougall, now in her fifth year with South- wood,*obviously enjoys her involvement and has come to know the school's routines almost as well as the staff. She started by joining the school's Safe Arrival program, a system of checking attendance records and phoning to track down students unaccounted for each morning and lunch hour. Mrs. McDougall is especially proud to help with this program. "Because we're doing this, we know the kids are safer," she explains. "It's a great personal satisfaction." Last year she was the Safe Arrival coordinator and this vear she and another volunteer, Jane Mcllwain, trained others for the program. Mrs. McDougall handled Southwood's Wall of Pride pro- gram last year, which honors selected students for their good work with a certificate and a photo displayed in the front hall. Mrs. McDougall took the pho- tographs, typed the certificates. and put up the frames. When she Childbirth choices seminar topic DURHAM - A seminar on childbirth is being held next month in Oshawa. Choices in Childbirth will be of interest to expectant parents and those planning a pregnancy. Topics will include prenatal care options, choosing a physician/midwife, and develop- ing a birth plan. The Childbirth Education Association of Durham is hosting the free seminar on Wednesday, Dec. I from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at R.S. McLaughlin High School, Stevenson and Rossland Rds., Oshawa. "I wanted all the kids to get a chance to get up there," she explains. Mrs. McDougall works in many areas of the school. She often helps in the office, filling out late slips or answering phones if everyone's busy. A regular fund-raiser at Southwood Park is pizza lunches. On Pizza Days Mrs. McDougall joins other vol- unteers sorting out and delivering the orders for each class. She also does photocopying for teachers and helps in her daughter Krystal's and her son Michael's classrooms. Mrs. McDougall particularly likes in - class volunteering. "You see what your kids are working on and when homework is due." she says. "and you get to know the teachers.' Southwood Park has a very active parent volunteer group. "I'd need a half a day to tell you all the work done by volunteers here." says Mrs. McDougall. "I'm just one lutle pea in the pod." The volunteers are recognized each year with a luncheon prepared by the teachers. Linda Zaks-Walker, the school's vice-principal, praises the efforts of Mrs. McDougall and all the volunteers. "Lynne's the kind of person who comes in and works so well with every- body," she says. "She and all our parent volunteers, in the class- rooms or at home, are an integral part of the school. They help out in so many ways and it really enriches the programs." Mrs. McDougall feels that vol- unteering is especially important with current education budget cuts. "If the parents don't come in and help out," she says, "the kids are just going to go without, plain and simple." Because of high fatigue levels from on-going health problems, Mrs. McDougall has to do less this year. "I know I have to back off," she says, "but I just can't stay away. It'll really bother me not to be here as much." She'll continue working in her chil- dren's classrooms and will come in once a month for Pizza Days. And she'll still help occasionally with the Safe Arrival program. Sometime next year, Mrs. McDougall and her family will be moving to St. Thomas. She hopes to volunteer in the school there and, if there's none in place, she WONNE'S HAIRSTYLIST a SlxtFhl Service Qllalr Y K*C" Friendly Alrnosphem Specializing In: CURLS & REUXERS Also: Turfs, weaves, curs, pemts and scop bealments INb 1M+nDa*W*&d lr, fl hair PtDACtr r -:420-5411 nos FMa► (w Db*) PI plans to set up a Safe Arrival pro- gram. Three Musketeers one for all and all for one By BRUCE FROUDE Durham Staff Hold onto your saddles. If you've got a seatbelt, put it on. You are about to go on a wild ride with four swashbuckling stars in The Three Musketeers. This must be what Alexandre Dumas had in mind when he wrote The Three Musketeers in 1844. If it wasn't, it should have been as screenwriter David Loughery has bridged the gap from classic tale to enchanting film. This version of the swordsmen is highly entertaining and contem- porary. Maybe too modern for some folks. At least the Muske- teers don't high five each other after a successful battle. They do just about everything else, though. Just like Kevin Costner in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, this movie brings history to the masses in an appetizing manner. Much of the credit belongs to producer Joe Roth who very quickly assembled a young, hip cast in Kiefer Sutherland (Athos), Charlie Sheen (Aramis), Oliver Platt (Porthos), Chris O'Donnell (D'Artagnan), Rebecca DeMor- nay (MiLady DeWinter) and Tim Curry (Cardinal Richelieu). Roth had to act quickly as several other Musketeer projects were being developed at the same time. His version apparently put an end to others. This all-star lineup is witty, flippant and at times irreverent in its quest to serve the king. Although some of them want to usurp the leader and it's this war of wits which propels this adapta- tion of the ancient tale. It's easy to understand why the four central characters were cast. Sutherland portrays the sullen, brooding Athos in the feisty man- ner we have become accustomed to from this young man. Sheen Concert band.. singers host joint performance AJAX-PICKERING - The Pickering Concert Band and the County Town Singers are teaming up for an afternoon of festive music. A joint concert titled Do You Hear What I Hear? will be hosted by the two groups at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5 at the Pickering Village United Church, 300 Church St. N., Ajax. The concert will include a selection of movie score tunes, as well as traditional Christmas music, choir and concert band pieces. Tickets will be available at the door at S4 for adults and $I for seniors and students. Children under 12 will be admitted free. does what is expected of him and O'Donnell proves it was no fluke in Scent of a Woman. He is indeed worthy of starring opposite such big name actors. And then there is Oliver Platt. He may be as unknown as O'Donnell but he won't be for long. Platt has been a second banana in several films, including Bennie and Joon, but it should change thanks to his memorable performance in the Three Muske- teers. DeMornay plays a wicked wench, not that you would expect anything else from her, with the same zeal she displayed in The Hand that Rocks the Cradle. Curry plays the conniving cler- gyman (which ones aren't when it comes to the big screen?) causing all the havoc throughout The Three Musketeers. Somewhere between the wild horse rides across the French ter- rain and the sword fights the cast is able to further the message of loyalty and nobility in The Three Musketeers which could have been overwhelmed by the fights and frivolity. The costumes in this movie are striking and quite likely the best of the year. For the parents in the audience, this one is suitable for the younger kids as the folks at Walt Disney Pictures stayed away from showing blood and gore. You won't find any gratuitous sex either or questionable language, just good clean fun. ` tHIZ Nt*I ADIJtER77SLtk SUNdAY,14600&ft 2ifJ49$-1PA0`i3 Christmas concert has international flavor DURHAM - The County Town Singers annual Christmas concert will have a worldly sound.
