PICKERING - Residents' worst fears were realized Friday when it
was confirmed another dump is planned in Pickering.
The landfill. which will sit next to the existing Brock West dump
and within the planned community of Seaton, will destroy development
in Pickering, predicts Lloyd Thomas, chairman of Pickering-Aiar Ciu-
zens' Together (PACT' for the Environment.
Waste Authority announced at a news conference in Woodbridge. The
site, known as EE11, was chosen over three other possible locations in
Pickering and one in Clarington (formerly Newcastle).
Dump locations in York and Peel regions were also revealed by the
FWA Friday. Angry residents attending the news conference screamed

AJAX-PICKERING - The Province is "definitely" putting
area residents' lives at risk by forcing ambulance services to
cut staff, an attendant warns.
And it's just a matter of time before tragedy strikes, main-
tains the Ajax -Pickering Ambulance Service employee.
'-Iite only way we're going to get our original coverage
back is when some child chokes and it's a death," predicts
another ambulance attendant who also refuses to give his
name. '"That's going to force the (provincial) government to
say 'We goofed'."
They've made their fears public after an 83 -year-old Ajax
woman who fractured her hip waited 45 minutes for medical
help Thursday as a short-staffed ambulance department
scrambled to keep up with calls.
An ambulance crew en route to the fracture victim was re-
routed to a higher priority industrial accident in Ajax, and a
back-up vehicle called in from Whitby was also re-routed to a
more serious call in Pickering, where a child was suspected of
suffering head injuries.
The incident is being cited as a warning of worse disasters
to come now that Queen's Park has forced ambulance depart-
ments to cut budgets and yank attendants off the job tinder
social contract legislation.
"It's disgusting; one of the wast days yet," says one of the
attendants. "We're going non-stop. The Ajax vehicle is cover-
ing Oshawa to Port Union Road."
With one ill attendant unreplaced and three others ordered
to take unpaid vacation days to achieve payroll savings, two
of four local ambulances were out of service Thursday, the
source says.
Lives of Ajax and Pickering residents are "definitely"
being put at risk, he cautions. "I have relatives living in this
town. That's why I'm so concerned."
At one point Wednesday night, there "were no available
vehicles covering Ajax or Pickering at all," he reveals,

Senior dies after Aiax home overheats

caused by a faulty furnace valve
which overheated her home.
Dwham Regional Police say 81 -
year -old Ethel Felhaber died en
raze fo hospital after her son vi-
ed her Patience Lane home early
Sunday afternoon because she
failed to answer her phone that
morning.
Preliminary aumpsy results sug-
gest she died from heat admustion.
The ministry of consumer and
commercial relations is investigat-
ing the B57 gas valve manufac-
tured by ITT Fluid Technology
Corporation in Guelph
It's believed the valve failed to
close when the home reached the
temperature set on the thermome-
ter. (An electric current opens a coil
inside the valve, allowing gas to
enter the furnace and produce heat)
The temperature inside the
home reached at least 110° Celsius,
the woman's son told investigators,
and caused plastic deflectors on a
radiator to meat
Ministry inspector Jim Roberts
says ITT began recalling the faulty,
valves on Oct 21. He must deter-
mine if the recall process was fol-
lowed correctly.
(According to policy, the Cana-
dian Gas Association should have
issued recall bulletins to utilities —
including Consumer's Gas in
Durham — which were then
required to issue bulletins to con-
tractors who purchase equipment
from them.)
Mr. Roberts suspects up to 200
of the 1,000 faulty valves produced
have not yet been rettuned to ITT
and suggests they could be any-
where in Canada
A coroner will decide whether
to call an inquest into Mrs. Fel-
haber's death.

Pickering residents were
expecting the worst, says Mr.
Thomas. "We were resigned to
the fact there was going to be (a
dump) here. It wasn't unexpect-
ed."
But the chosen location "envi-
ronmentally, is probably the most
unstable site they could've
picked," he laments. "Leachate is
already leaking from Brock West.

an incredibly dumb place to put
it. I don't think Pickering is
going to stand for it."
PACT is going to undertake
health studies "of the whole
Town", examining data on chil-
dren's illnesses and pregnan-
cies, he reveals, explaining the
group believes Pickering is
already an unhealthy place to
live because of Brock West, the
nuclear plant and hydro lines.
PACT will also fight as the
dump plan proceeds through
the Environmental Assessment
process over the next several
years. "That's where we're
going to get busy."

also slammed by Pickering
mayor Wayne Arthurs, who
called the IWA process "a mess"
in a written statement. "A
Durham Region mega -dump will
put a crimp in the sales of (Pre-
mier Bob) Rae's model homes in
Seaton. I just can't understand
how any government would take
a greenfield site and purposely
construct a huge garbage dump
cheek by jowl with soon -to -be -
built homes."

Of that, the Durham Region
Roman Catholic Separate School
Board has requested almost $16.4
million for 1995, the first year in a
five-year capital expenditure fore-
cast which prioritizes the need for
new schools and additions.
Local taxpayers would pick up
about $28.5 million of that total bill.

It came as no surprise, but Friday's announcement that Pickering is
indeed the chosen site for another dump is disheartening and does
nothing to enhance the future of our community.
Residents' worst fears came to be when the provincial Interim
Waste Authority (IWA) named site EE 11, located south of Taunton
Rd. north of the existing Brock West dump, as its pick for a new
Durham dump.
Lloyd Thomas. chairman of Pickering -Ajax Citizens' Together
(PACT) for the Environment, says environmentally the location is
probably the most unstable site they could have picked.
"Leachate is already leaking from Brock West. It's going to put that
much more stress and strain on it," he said. "It's going to destroy
development in Pickering. Who's going to want to move to Pickering'
It's an incredibly dumb place to put it. I don't think Pickering is going
to stand for it."
The Province's choice was also slammed by Pickering mayor
Wayne Arthurs who called the IWA process "a mess" and Durham
West MPP Jim Wiseman, whose government created the IWA. He
believes Pickering has already taken enough garbage.
But the battle is not over. PACT and the Town will fight the dump
plan throughout the Environmental Assessment process, through pub-
lic opposition campaigns spearheaded by community groups. Picker-
ing politicians will also battle Queen's Park for its "abdication of
responsibility" in the IWA's dump -search process, mayor Arthurs
says.
But, your help is also needed. Now is not the time to sit back and
let your neighbors fight for you. Get involved, lend your support and
fight for your children's future.

I am concerned about the con-
stitutional repercussions and net
effect Bill C-47, Section 2, other-

When we elected you and your
government, we expected that we
would be consulted before certain
controversial pieces of legislation

For two months now I have
been reading about the dilemma
of the Durham Regional bus
passes.
Don't people understand the
days of "free rides" are coming to
an end. I don't understand these
parents thinking that it's the pub-
lic's responsibility to bus their
"little darlings" to school.
It seems the parents of these
children think all us taxpayers
should be burdened with the cost
of getting their children to
school.
I am sick and tired of today's
Parents expecting Joe Public to
shoulder their responsibilities.
They think we Joe Public should
Pay to transport their children to
and from school, if they don't
achieve well academically it's the
teachers fault, and if they get in
trouble outside of school the par-
ents want to blame the police or
anyone but themselves.
It's time parents took a good
look at themselves and their
responsibility to their children.

DURHAM - The Ontario
Home Builders' Association
(OHBA) is blaming high taxes for
a massive underground renova-
tions market in the home building
industry.
Statistics released by the
OHBA revealed 41 per cent in
home renovations and 17 per cent
of the new -home market has gone
underground.
Stephen Kaiser, president of
OHBA, said high taxes and a
weak economy are making the
consumer turn to underground
contractors for cheaper renova-
tions and buying new homes.
"The taxpayers are fed up with
being overtaxed and abused of
their tax dollars," said Mr. Kaiser.
"They are looking for a better
value for their dollar."
According to the Canadian
Federation of Independent Busi-
ness, 12 to 15 per cent of the
economy is untaxed. Since the
GST was implemented, an esti-
mated S40 billion has gone to the
underground market bringing the
current underground estimate to
$1 10 billion.
More consumers are asking
contractors to work for cash, and
in new -home construction, buyers
try to avoid the GST by buying as
'resale,' houses the builder has
built himself.
Ray Miron, owner of Miron
Construction in Oshawa, said it is
hard for a small business like his
to compete against the under-
ground market.
"We can hardly make ends
meet now," said Mr. Miron.
"They (underground contractors)
are taking the work away from
us."
Electricians, carpentry and dry-
wall specialists are doing extra
work on the side for cash, said
Mr. Miron. Consumers are look-
ing for a cheaper alternative.
"Money is hard to get," said
Mr. Miron. "A lot of people look
at saving a few bucks."
Frank Veltri, president of the
Oshawa -Durham Home Builders'
Association, said the black market
is definitely alive in this area.
"I have no doubts," said Mr.
Veltri. "It's happening in every
market."
New changes to the building
code have also put tighter regula-
tions on the contractors and made
construction costs higher, said Mr.
Kaiser.
"We're concerned as an indus-
try because it's forcing the legiti-
mate contractors to compete
against the black market,"
explained Mr. Kaiser.
Scott Jeffery, vice-president of
Jeffery Homes in Oshawa, said
quality and workmanship are the
key to competing against the
black market.
"The only way to compete with
them, other than price, is in the
quality of work," he said.
Mr. Jeffery said customers
have approached his building
company for a cash deal.

PICKERING - In an unexpected move,
Pickering politicians failed to tubber stamp
paperwork Monday pertaining to provincial
acquisition of the Altona Forest
A modification to the Town's district plan,
drafted to reflect the Province's intent to pro-
tect about half of the 330 -acre forest from
development, was refused by council's execu-
tive committee. The vote, unexpected because
council formally endorsed the provincial acqui-
sition project in April, leaves intact Pickering's
existing district plan, which calls for an A rban
forest" much smaller in acreage than the
Provincial project.
But planning director Neil Carroll says it's
his understanding council will reconsider the
item Monday.
The executive committee refused the dis-
trict plan amendment after councillor Rick
Johnson lambasted Queen's Park for purchas-
ing Altona Forest property from developers
while leaving resident landowners still waiting
for a financial offer.
"Some of the residents out there are getting
a raw deal,,, he asserted. "They bailed out the
big developers — this is great — and let the

parties intend to bring before the OMB.

DICKERING - So you think you only need your
seatbelt on the highway?
Well, consider this. When you're cruising along in
the city at the leisurely pace of 50 kilometres an hour
and some drunken idiot suddenly crosses the centre
line and hits your car, the impact of your head bounc-
ing off the dashboard will be the equivalent of what
you'd feel after a free fall from a three-storey building
if you hit the ground head -first.
Nice, eh? This is just one of the pleasant little tid-
bits of information you can pick up at the Accident
Awareness Show, running to 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon
at the Metro East Trade
Centre in Pickering.
The show is spon-
sored by the Durham
Regional Police Asso-
ciation, and its inten-
tion is more or less to
fascinate you and scare
the heck out of you at
the same time. And if
you have the good
sense to take your kids,
they'll get a healthy jolt
out of it too. Admission
is free.
One of the first
things you'll see as you
enter the show is the
crumpled remains of a
purple van involved in
a fatal accident on
Hwy. 401 near Mill St.
in Ajax last July. The
entire left front and
side of the van has been
crushed in, so the driv-
er's side mirror is
located approximately
where the centre rear-
view mirror should be.
The steering wheel and
dashboard are both bent
upwards toward the
roof, and the seats are
jumbled about in all
directions so you don't
even want to think
about what shape the
passengers were in
when the van finally rolled to a stop.
An accident scene in the middle of the exhibition is
complete with crunched -up cars, broken vehicle pans
strewn on the "road" and mannequins to represent the
accident victims and police. In another display, a car
that has obviously hit a pole or tree is placed with its
buckled frame around a post in the exhibition hall.
Everything is done quite tastefully, ,of course;
there's no gore or mangled accident victims in the dis-
plays. It's the way your imagination fills in the scenes
that makes them so grisly.
But it is by no means strictly a horror show. There
is a mock-up of a road showing exactly how long it
will take for a car travelling 60 km/h to stop in vari-
ous conditions (20 metres on a dry road, 23 on a wet
one, 28 on a snow-covered one, and an agonizingly -
long 30 metres (98 ft.) on an ice -covered surface).
The Durham police bike patrol unit has a display
which includes a bike safety video. Also putting on
exhibits are the Pickering Fire Department and the
local ambulance service.
If you're over 16, healthy and in the mood for a
ride, you can try the OPP's "Seat Belt Convincer".
It's a contraption consisting of a seat -belted chair that
slides down a rail to a sudden stop which simulates
the impact you'd feel in

sic Engineering, a
Burlington consulting
firm, explains the vari-
ous techniques used by
investigators to deter-
mine exactly what hap-
pened during a particu-
lar accident. In one of
the examples shown,
investigators deter-
mined that a seatbelt
ripped because it hadn't
been retracting proper-
ly and the fabric was
worn from being con-
stantly caught in the car
door. Other things the
firm is often called
upon to determine
include whether a vehi-
cle's lights were on at
the time an accident
occurred (the condition
of the tungsten filament
in the bulb is the give-
away) and how fast it
was travelling (the
"crush" damage to the
body is measured).
The Ryerson Road Safety Research Centre, which
conducts accident research for the federal govern-
ment, has a display which includes a video detailing
what can happen to a human body during various
types of vehicle collisions. Your stomach will churn
as you watch crash test dummies being thrown about
in all sorts of painful directions.
There's plenty of other fascinating stuff to see, and
you'll definitely be extra careful driving home after
the show.
The free show runs Saturday from 10 am. to 10
p.m. and Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm. at the Metro
East Trade Centre at Brock Rd. and Hwy. 401.

PICKERING VILLAGE - On
Dec. 26, 1832, William Hartrick
Sr. purchased 200 acres on the
north side of Old Kingston Rd.
where Pickering Village now
stands. A magistrate for Ontario
County, he was a man of influ-
ence, and financially "comfort-
able". With his wife Phoebe, he
built their family's home in the
Village of Duffins Creek in 1843.
William and Phoebe had one
son and two daughters who sur-
vived childhood. Mr. Hartrick
twice took mortgages out against
the family home, once in January
1845, and again in July 1852, to
build homes on his property for
each of his children. The latter
mortgage in 1852, was for the
construction of a frame house for
his son, William Jr. This
dwelling still stands on the south-
west comer of Rossland Rd. and
Church St., and is often referred
to as the Frost House. It will be
incorporated into the future resi-
dential development.
William Hartrick Sr. died in
1874. His will clearly describes
how the land was to be divided
among his children after his
wife's death. Phoebe must have
released the land to her children
prior to her death in 1882, for the
1877 County of Ontario Atlas
shows each child owning and liv-
ing on their parcels of land.
Lydia, the eldest daughter,
inherited the parcel which includ-
ed the family home. On Jan. 21,
1878 the Lydia Linton Real
Estate Act was registered on the
title of the property, as she initi-
ated the subdivision of the land
surrounding the house. The com-
mercial development on the north
side of Old Kingston Rd. soon
followed, as the lots were sold
and developed. The residential
subdivision to the north of the
house occurred later. The Har -
trick home originally faced
Kingston Rd., gracefully set back
to provide a stately appearance.
The retail buildings built in front
of the house in the late 1800s iso -
Wed the Hartrick home ban the
main street, therdore the eastern
facade of the home, facing Linton
Ave., became the main entrance.

house, the Hartrick house is a
storey and a half, constructed of
local field stone gathered from

The Hartick House
the property. The Scottish or
English origin of the mason is
apparent, for the stone is laid in
rough horizontal courses or rows,
with large dressed stones saved
for the front facade and the cor-
ners. The lintels are brick, which
adds a pleasant contrast to the
grey granite field stone.
Typical of this period, the
cooking was done in the base-
ment, thus eliminating the need
for a summer kitchen. At the turn
of the century, concrete blocks
were the new and "modern" con-
struction material, but they were
costly and not as readily available
as the field stone traditionally
used for masonry construction.
Many home owners attempted to
disguise their "old fashioned" rub-
ble construction by parging the
exterior surface with mortar, and
drawing lines to represent con-
crete blocks. Likely around 1900,
the eastern facade of the Hartrick
house, which faces the street, was
dressed in this manner to appear
like a "modern" concrete block
building.
Located on Linton Ave. in
Pickering Village, the Hartrick
house is now the home of Godiva
Antiques. Interior detailing is
original and the house still pos-
sesses the charm and ambience it
had when the Hartrick family
lived there. The house is designat-
ed under the Ontario Heritage
Act. As the home of a local busi-
ness, the public has the opportuni-
ty to see the interior, which has
changed very little over the last
150 years.
Christmas tree magic
DURHAM - The Alzheimer
Society of Durham Region is cel-
ebrating the magic of Christmas
trees.
A special fund-raiser called
the Yuletide Tapestry of Trees
will be held at Trillium Trails,
north of Oshawa, on Sunday,
Nov. 28.
The event will include a can-
dlelight dinner, with a Bavarian
menu, followed by an auction of
designer miniature Christmas
trees.

The Keans currently do a tele-

Dunbarton's Angela Graham three-peats as provincial cross-country champ

High School's Angela Gra-
ham is the best in Ontario —
for an incredible third time.
The 18 -year-old Pickering
phenom ran to a third con-
secutive provincial cross-
country title, her second at
the senior level, at the Boyd
Conservation Area in Wood-
bridge on Saturday, Nov. 6.
Running the five -kilome-
tre course against 206 of the
top cross-country athletes
from across Ontario, Graham
cruised to victory in the
senior girls' category. finish-
ing a full nine seconds ahead
of her nearest rival, Joanne
Bolton of Dryden.
The victory represented
her fifth gold
medal at high
school provin-
cial meets, in
cross-country
and track and
field combined.
She's also cap-
tured two gold
medals at
Ontario high her.'
school meets

The provincial win also
gave her a clean sweep of the
high school cross-country
season. She won the Lake
Ontario Secondary School

the Durham York Secondary
School Athletic Association
(DYSSAA) meet.
Derrington, who coaches
the Dunbarton cross-country
team with fellow teacher Deb
Daly, is effusive about Gra-
ham's accomplishments. He
believes she has the ability,
the personality and the deter-
mination which may make
her a legitimate
world-class ath-
lete.
"1 think she's
more than a
national -class ath-
lete. She won a
medal at the Pan
American Games
last year, running
against the top
South American
and North Ameri-
can runners. When
you look at that
you say 'Holy
smoke, she's in a
hemisphere -wide
class',- he says.
In addition to her consid-
erable feats, Graham has
been an asset to the school's
cross-country program in
many other ways. She's
always willing to help with
the younger runners who
look up to her.
"She's got a down-to-
earth personality. She
doesn't get a swelled head
and that's nice to see. Here's
a kid you can't say enough
about her. She's just super,"
says Derrington.
She will now compete at
the National Cross -Country
Championships at the Uni-
versity of British Columbia
on Nov. 27. A top five finish
at the Canadian meet will
earn her a spot on the team
to compete at the World
Cross -Country Champi-
onships in Budapest, Hun-
gary.
Graham says she's aiming
for a top -three finish at the
nationals.
"My goal is to place in the
top three, so we'll see that
happens," says Graham,
who's highly sought after by
American universities for a
scholarship. "My goal is to
make the team, but it would
be great to be top three."
D 'She's one in
a million...

1,500 -metre
events.
"She's one in
a million," says
her Dunbarton cross-country
coach Hary Derrington. "If
you look at the number of
medals she's won in cross-
country and in track and
field, there's nobody in
Durham Region like her."
For Graham, the three -
peat as provincial cross-
country champ (she also won
at the junior level three years
ago) is indeed a huge
achievement in her blossom-
ing track career.
"Yea, it was an incredible
feeling," says Graham, in her
OAC year at Dunbarton.
"Out of all of Ontario to
have it happen three times is
incredible. There are a lot of
girls out there who aro excel-
lent runners, so it was a great
accomplishment."
Despite some pressure
going into the Ontario meet
as the pre -race favorite, Gra-
ban says she was determined
to run her own race and let
the chips fall where they
may.
"I just wanted to run my
own race and if they came
with me, they came with
me," she says. "One girl
(Bolton) came out of
nowhere. I didn't see her
during the race, but suppos-

McMaster advanced to the serri-finals of the Ontario
University Athletic Association (OUAA) rugby champi-
onships before being knocked out by the University of
Western Ontario 23-21. Miller had two converts and two

win playoff tilt

School Rams senior girls' bas-
ketball team has advanced to the
LOSSA quarter -finals.
The Rams move on in the
playoffs after downing the
Oshawa Paul Dwyer Saints 59-
52 in an elimination -round
game at Dwyer Thursday after-
noon.
Ajax played catch-up basket-
ball for almost the entire game,
trailing by 12 points at half-time
and by six at the end of the third
quarter.
However, the Rams
outscored Dwyer 22-9 in the
fourth quarter to post the win.
"The kids played their best
game of the season," says Ajax
coach Roxanne Curtis.
Tania Paulo¢za led the Rams
with a 21 -point game, including

Cheryl Clement had nine, while
Kim Tilden and Shama Gumbs
chipped in with eight points
apiece.

'AA' rep hockey Panthers enjoyed
only mixed success in recent
league action despite solid team
efforts.
In a league tilt against last
year's league champs from
Markham, Pickering broke a
scoreless draw with less than eight
minutes to go in the game. How-
ever, Markham scored three unan-
swered goals to win 3-1. Jeff
Tobin scored the Ione Pickering
goal, assisted by Evan Georgievs-
ki.
Playing Bowmanville, Picker-
ing jumped out to a 2-0 lead
which stood up through two peri-
ods of play. But, Bowmanville
scored on a powerplay, and netted
the equalizer with less than two
minutes to play for a 2-2 draw.
Tobin scored both Pickering
goals, with assists to Kurtis Fray
and Georgievski.
The Garthwood Homes Pan-
thers put together an excellent
effort to notch a 6-3 victory over
Ajax. Colin Jennings, with his
second of the game, scored the
eventual game winner for Picker-
ing. Scott Billing, with his second
of the contest, fired an empty -net
marker with 28 seconds remaining
to seal the win for Pickering.
Also scoring for Pickering
were Georgievski who fired a pair
of goals. Drawing assists were
Jennings with three, Billing,
Georgievski and Tobin.

Ontario Distinguished Service
Award from the Certified General
Accountants Association of
Ontario. The award is given
annually by the association to
individuals who have provided
distinguished service to the orga-
nization at the chapter or provin-

ty. Daniel is one of three individ-
uals to receive the award this
year. He works as the director of
finance at West Park Hospital in
