He says the Town has already "sent off a lot of requests (to the ministry). It's just another attempt. Were not leaving a stone unturned." But court action might not be taken, he acknowledges. "If we threaten them with that, they might get the message." Legal action financed with tax- payers' money may not be the best or the quickest solution, adds Mr. Van Kempen. "With the stroke of a pen the Province can revoke the certificate and close Brock West once and for all. If it's full then it should be closed." However, according to Metro's director of solid waste management, George Kelly, the dump is not full. In an earlier interview, he explained, "Capaci- ty of the site is based on volume, not tonnage. We may have exceeded some elevations, but the overall volume is not at capaci- ty." Still, Miss Gulliver realizes she's made herself vulnerable to discrimination by coming out. Last year, for instance, she faced criticism from parents opposed to her involvement in Concerned Citizens for Progressive Sexual Education, formed during heated debate over a video for students aged nine to 12 which discusses homosexuality. The group took a stand against lobbyists wanting abstinence -only sexual education. While it sup- ported abstinence as a valid choice for some, members believed family -life education should reflect a world that includes gays, lesbians, bisexuals and non-traditional families. Though Miss Gulliver was worried lobbyists would publicly ask her if she was a homosexual, she instead received letters demanding her resignation and late night phone calls from heavy breathers who quoted Bible vers- es. But Miss Gulliver wasn't new to harassment. When she broke off her engagement to her boyfriend and came out as a les- bian while at university, she "experienced violent things." As a member of the college's Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Alliance, for instance, most of the posters she hung around campus announcing meetings were van- dalized with such messages as: "Hurray for AIDS, let the annihi- lation begin" and "We're coming to your meeting with bats and knives." At the same time, her family wouldn't accept her sexual orien- tation and didn't speak to her for nearly a year. When the relation- ship with her partner ended and she married her old boyfriend in 1991, "They thought I was cured and began talking to me again." Today, after the breakup of her marriage and with a new relation - ship under way, Miss Gulliver is "ignored again" by her family. As she struggles with such rejection, she points to "one of the myths about gay relationships is that they don't last." Miss Gulliver and her partner Louise Anderson, 33, hope to cel- ebrate their relationship with a ceremony. "We'd like some sort of recog- nition that same-sex couples can be committed," explains Miss Anderson, education and support coordinator of the AIDS Commit- tee of Durham. She believes the gay communi- ty needs a "positive role model to look up to. The gay teen suicide rate is three times that of normal teens. They're told it's wrong to be gay Her nine-year-old son Jesse Giroux, who refers to 'bliss Gul- liver as his "co -mom," realizes, "People say mean things about gays. And, she says. A hope no one has to go through what I went through." That coming from people intelligent enough to make it into college. Miss Gulliver dcserves to be commended, not condemned, for several reasons: J As a person in public office, she's giving the gay community a "posu,e role model to look up to", in her words. That's important hcause, Miss Gulliver notes, the suicide rate among gay teens is three units that of heterosexual youths. "They're told it's wrong to be gay." LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Immigration policies need to be revamped To the editor, We as Canadians have the right The issues facing this countrN to ask and determine the numbers on immigration have so far been of new immigrants that are cur - cleverly avoided as a topic of rently being allowed into this debate by the political parties, country. Those of us who are con - with a few exceptions. cerned about this very important Juvenile crime age-old problem To the editor, The letter to the editor (Oct. 17) from your reader Paul War - rack in Ajax struck a chord with me. It's a very old and common problem — theft committed by juveniles. I had my beautiful bike stolen when I was a youngster many years ago. It is traumatic for a youngster. My own son came home from swimming once with a pair of beat up shoes because some- body stole his new shoes. It is my suggestion to hold the par- ents responsible for the crimes that their children commit. Lack of supervision would be a good charge for starters. I also endorse charging the parents of juveniles who commit vandalism in school and against other people's property. It is beyond me why a parent would not ask their children questions like: Where did you get the new bike?; Where did you get the new running shoes?; Where did you get the leather jacket? The usual answer is proba- bly, "Oh, Johnny leant me his bike", or "I found it." Or, "I traded -my Johnny Bench base- ball card for the Nike running shoes." These are of course lies, but I suspect too many parents would not question this any more or really do not want to know. 1 feel the police should involve themselves more into this sort or crime because the juveniles who commit crimes today are the inmates of Kingston penitentiary tomorrow. How about a sting operation like putting bugs (the electronic type) into some choice leather jackets, running shoes or moun- tain bikes and let's find out where the scofflaws live. George Buettner, Pickering issue are some how made out to feel that we are racists. The sim- ple fact of the matter is that Cana- da, in this economic recession, cannot continue with these so- called quotas. We need to limit these numbers and to start and accept people with the skills and the knowledge that will be a benefit to our further development as a nation. Because we are concerned about the costs of health care, welfare and multi- culturalism, does not mean that we are all white supremacists. This country is doing more than its fair share of taking in and accepting new people from all over the world and we can only do so much without putting ourselves in dire straits. With the exception of our native peoples, we all came from somewhere else. We or our ances- tors have all had a hand in its building. So we must also have a part in its survival. It's my love for this Canada that makes me want to pause, take a breath, and make sure that we continue on as a great nation — allowing those in need to start a new life and be assured of having a wonderful place to live, raise and teach their children and to reap of its benefits and its great opportunities. If my stand on reducing immigration, and the love for my country and its continued prosperity means that I am a racist, then so be it. Andy Cobean, Pickering Ajar man is one happy customer To the editor, I'm writing this brief letter just to give a different experience with insurance companies. I know in many cases their reputation for fulfilling claims has been tar- nished but I'm letting you know this was not the case with me. After returning from our holi- days in August, we were wel- comed to our residence with a minor flood caused by a broken plastic nut on our toilet. An adjus- tor for Sun Alliance Canada came out promptly to assess the dam- age. Much of the furniture had to be replaced and within one week we received a cheque for new fur- niture due to their speedy approval on our claim. This is living proof of a very satisfied client with a big insur- ance company who didn't give us any hassles or excuses. A design competition is one aspect of Seaton, a community of 90,000 people planned for north Pickering, being looked at by a committee on which the mayor serves. The 10 -member advisory committee, struck by the provin- cial housing minister, consists of representatives from the Town of Pickering, residents' groups, Durham Region planning depart- ment, conservation organiza- tions, the home building industry and more. The group's mandate is to come up with recommendations yORT.9,•, : i.r •11,1 }..E `.IE See the listing in today's paper for more details:: by the spring of 1995 on the fea- sibility and planning of Seaton within existing environmental constraints, says the mayor. No details on a possible design com- petition have been set. He predicts construction could begin on the new community by the turn of the century, and that 45,000 people could call Seaton home in 30 years. "It makes imminent sense to build the community as part of Pickering, but we're not rushing out today to do it. Its time will come." The committee has met twice and has already discussed the issue of a Durham -only dump possibly being built on the Seaton property by the provincial gov- ernment. A letter will be sent to the provincial Interim Waste Author- ity requesting that no decisions be made about Seaton lands until the committee's recommenda- tions are ready, says mayor Arthurs. "It's one more weapon in the arsenal" in the fight against a landfill. Other concerns include ensur- ing there's infrastructure in place and an employment and econom- ic base to make the community work, he adds. Wards 3, 4 and 5 regional councillor Susan Dulny proposed the review at Monday's Ajax council meeting, questioning "Is the structure in need of review?" Mrs. Dulny also wondered aloud if council wastes time "with issues that shouldn't be addressed" and if council works well as a team. ax council's r CORRECTION NOTICE CAROLE'S COUNTRY Ad appearing Oct. 22 should have included Monday classes 7 p.m. -9:30 p.m. at Metro East Trade Centre. oles and goals review delayed "It's time to re-examine our roles and goals," she said. The Town will soon hire a new chief administrative officer and the number of wards could drop to four from the current five, Mr. McMaster noted. An Ontario Municipal Board hearing on the possible change in the number of wards will be held Nov. 25 in the council chambers at the Town hall. Ward 3 councillor Steve Parish supported conducting the review now, saying it's "timely and appropriate" The mayor has too much con- trol over the make-up of commit- tees and coordinator positions, Mr. Parish charged. He wanted the review to be completed by Nov. 15, when councillors rotate committee and coordinator positions. Ward 5 councillor Pat Brown also wanted to proceed with the review, saying any changes would be a "political decision" and had "nothing to do with staff." While she proposed the review, Mrs. Dulny supported the deferral. "I don't see this as strict- ly political. We need staff input as well." Council voted 5-3 to defer the matter until April.
