Despite an all-out search now under way for 22 -year- old Charlene Lynn Gemottine, there are no new leads in her disappearance, Durham Regional Police report. Cops across the country, as well as customs officials at all border crossings, have been alerted to be on the lookout for the maroon 1988 Plymouth Voyager minivan — licence 850 PRY — that Miss Gemottine was driving when she left her Makin Cres. home around 2:30 p.m. Pictures of the missing woman have also been dis- tributed to all area police stations. Though cops have questioned employees at each of the Scarborough stores and Pickering restaurant listed in Miss Gemottine's detailed account of where she was going, they've come up empty handed. A spiritual service will be held at the Oshawa YWCA at 33 McGrigor St. Sun- day to celebrate the lives of those who died and those who continue to live with the challenge of being infected with HIV, the virus that usually leads to the development of AIDS. The service begins at 7 p.m. in the Oak Room of the YWCA. Take to Centre St., then travel south to McGrig- or. As well, there are a number of displays to promote awareness and knowledge of AIDS and HIV at malls, libraries and hos- pitals throughout the Region. The slogan for AIDS Awareness Week this year is Strong Lives — Strong Com- munities. The message behind the slogan is that a strong and caring community is important to everyone, including people infected with MV. Durham Region has 45 reported cases of AIDS, and 150 people who have tested positive for HIV. AIDS Awareness Week events in the region have been organized by a planning committee whose members include the AIDS Committee of Durham, the Durham Region Health Department, Durham Col- lege and the Addiction Research Founda- tion. Female condom shown to students DURHAM - The first condom for females was displayed at Durham College Monday. Sex educator Sue Johanson had her audi- ence's undivided attention when she showed 500 students the female condom expected to be on the market in Canada in January. It will cost $3, can be used all night and is designed to protect both partners against sex- ually transmitted diseases, including AIDS. Ms. Johanson's appearance in Oshawa is part of AIDS Awareness Week presented by Durham's health department and the AIDS Committee of Durham. AIDS Awareness Week offers education and activities. Ms. Johanson pointed out that the only safe sex is no sex. "All I can do is encourage you to practise safer sex.'. She reminded young people the birth control pill offers limited protection. "If she is on the pill, this docs not mean she's pro- tected against sexually transmitted diseases." The students were told to get to know their partners before engaging in sexual intercourse. And, they were advised to find out if their sexual partners have been heavy drug users since drug users, especially those sharing needles, arc in the AIDS' high risk category. As well as showing the audience the con- dom for females, Ms. Johanson showed the students the proper way for a man to put on a male condom. "Schools have never shied away from calling police about violence," assures Durham Board of Education communications manager Mary Brown. Albert Gemottine, the missing woman's father, is distributing posters of his daughter and the minivan with the help of co-work- ers and neighbors. (The van is missing its front licence plate and has a broken back-up light on the driver's side. "She's responsible, good natured and good looking," Mr. Gemottine says of his daughter. "She's always willing to help if you need a hand. Everybody else, if they ever had a problem, she'd be there to help." Miss Gemottine is white, 51" and 100 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing purple track pants, a loose purple sweater, a black leather jacket and white running shoes. She has a severe food allergy and is familiar with a special diet she must follow, police report. Detectives working•on the case have received numerous phone calls concerning Miss Gemottine's disappearance, "but nothing solid. We're encouraging everyone and anyone to call," says Const. The latest example comes from the ministry of education and training. In a letter sent to school boards across Ontario Monday, the ministry ordered schools to report violent incidents on their properties immediately to police and parents or guardians of stu- dents involved in those incidents. Like violence in the classroom is a brand new. phenomenon. Like our educators who are on the front lines in our schools aren't bright enough to call cops to deal with thugs. The Province is more than a little behind the times in reacting to classroom violence. Durham Board of Education communications manager 'Mary Brown notes, "Schools have never shied away from calling police about violence. Certainly an,, thing that has criminal overtones is reported." At the Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board. "anything we consider violent is reported to police," notes direc- tor Earl Lagroix. In other words, our educators are ahead of the ministry that oversees them as they've been tackling the problem for some time. Not just reacting to classroom violence as the Province urges, but taking a pro -active role in fighting it. In fact, in Durham, a safe - school committee made up of all school boards in the Region has been working with Durham Regional Police for more than a year already. Bouquets to our educators for tackling classroom violence head-on. Bricks to the provincial government for just now recog- nizing something should be done about this serious problem. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Two school boards a luxury we can no longer afford To the editor, In a recent letter published by your newspaper, a reader did an excellent job in highlighting one of the major problems with our educa- tional officials today, and that is no fiscal responsibility or leadership. The example given was the Durham Board of Education drop- ping busing to Pine Ridge and Dun- barton High School and forcing par- ents to cover the costs of their chil- dren having to use municipal trans- portation. This amounts to S38 per month per student. (5304 per stu- dent for the year.) For those parents that own prop- erty, there will be no corresponding decrease in school taxes. In reality what we are seeing is a straight pass-through to parents. Another tax gab. Few will deny the meed to get the education costs in line. However, passing the costs directly through to taxpayers while at the same time not cutting back expenses, is not the answer. Where is the leadership to get expenses back in line? Consider the following: - While the public high school busing was cut, I still see many buses running down our road. I do not care if they are for public school, Catholic elementary schools, Catholic high schools or what ever. Seems to me there is an opportunity w accomplish the goal of getting the students to school by looking at the area geographically, rather than by individual school destination. - Having students walk a certain distance for common pickup points should not be a problem. Having students wall: two miles each way seems excessive. Before the readers immediately jump to the good old days when they had to walk to school... I doubt that many had to walk that distance, and even if they did, the population/traffic was not as hazardous as it is today. - On a more general note, I still have a major problem with the cost of administration. When I hear the local board of education trying to proceed with $25 million adminis- tration buildings, when our kids still have to share textbooks with other Haveyoursay• Who do you think won this week's election debate? kids in the class because there are not enough to go around, something is wrong. - I don't believe we can afford to have a school board for the public system and another for the Catholic school system. It is a luxury Canadi- ans cannot afford. Today when peo- ple have to decide between nice -to - have versus bare necessity, why not show the people what the cost sav- ings would be to have a common board and let's vote on it. - As well 1 would like the oppor- tunity to approve the yearly educa- tion budgets — today there is a pro- cess to attend board meetings, protest, but not effect any real change. If we the taxpayers are paying Frank Armstrong says, "Nobody won, but I think Kim is going to win. They need a woman in there to run the country." Agnes MacPherson says, "Audrey McLaughlin won. She's honest and straight forward. Her party would make a good opposi- tion." Pat Steinwedel says, "There was no clear winner. No party's platform was impressive. I frankly don't believe any of them any- more." Morris Evans says, 1 think it was a draw. They all made their points. The Reform Party semed to do well." the bills, we need to have an active say in where the dollars get spent. The question is, where do we go from here — expressing one's opin- ion in the paper is one thing, effect- ing change is another. Perhaps we need to give our elected officials some feedback. One suggestion would be to have this newspaper conduct a survey of where the sup- port is for some of these ideas. Bet- ter idea would be to have the board of education seek some customer feedback. If you agree take some time and flood the editorial depart- ment with your views, probably the first step we can take to get back involved. Brian W. Thom Installations Inc. of Ajax is there to provide first rate workmanship at a reasonable coat. Established in 1981, E. Thom Installations' owner Eric Thom is a certified Pella contractor Having worked for the Hunt and Pella firm - which produces one of the top wooden windows an the market - for years before branching out an his own, Eric receives intense training in order to be certified to install the products and keep up to date on the latest developments in the industry. These include such items as blinds located between double glazed glass. Anyone having wrestled with dusting venetian AFTER blinds would certainly welcome such a feature. Eric's business involves "primarily windows, but I do a little bit of everything: patio doors, brick knock -outs, solanums, basements, steel replacement doors and replacement glass.- By lass"By providing a full line of wood clad & vinyl products at competitive prices, "the customer ends up getting the jobs virtually at cost. I can buy the products much cheaper than the homeowner can, and labor costs are more reasonable now. It's therefore cheaper to undertake a project now than it was two to three years ago," Eric noes One trend inhales vinyl and aluminum frames in virtually any color imaginable for either indoor or outdoor use although "wood provides better insulation. Many people prefer to go with the aluminum outside, which is pretty well maintenance - free, while having wood installed inside. We can provide the wood frames in clear pine so that it easily adapts to any type of stain or paint to match an interior." Not one to shy away from smaller jobs, Eric finds "many customers opt to do a few windows at a time over a period of three of four years. They'd rather spend a little at a time. I'm not the least bit opposed to that and it's nice to know I'll have a client for a few years too." Offering a five-year warranty on his work. Eric is a firm believer in service. "I've gone back to a job that was done nine years ago! For the sake of an hour and a satisfied c ustoater. it's worth it." E. The Blackjack 21 Racing Team — con- sisting of Paul Duck- worth of Pickering and Mike Hardt — drove its Sony/Bob Johnston Chev-Olds-Geo-spon- sored Camaro to sec- ond and sixth-place finishes during the two days of racing. On the first day, driver Hardt set the early pace, running in a tight battle for fourth Paul Duckworth place with Mike Schill. At the midway point of the race, Hardt wheeled into the pits with Duckworth taking over the driv- ing chores. After moving into third place, the car blew a tire late in the race and ended in sixth place. Duckworth was second for much of the second day of racing. Leading for two laps, he handed off to driving partner Hardt at the midway point of the race. The team maintained its second -place stand- ing, finishing 30 seconds behind winner Peter Lockhart. The Mont Tremblant race results moved Duck- worth into second place overall in the point cham- pionship in the Michelin Enduroseries. The next event for the Blackjack 21 Racing Team is the Celebration of Mosport race this weekend. A good result at the Celebration of Mosport race could give Duckworth the driver's champi- onship title of the series. ALL AL RIVETT WITH 5PORT5 683-b I IU, FAX 663-/3b DO'C's defence held off a late - game surge by Dunbarton to keep the score tied. Bruno Azevedo scored both touchdowns for the Dunbarton Spartans. The DO'C juniors have a record of one tie and one loss in league play. They lost their first- football ever football game to Pine Ridge last week. DO'C travels plays the Paul Dwyer Saints at the Oshawa Civic Fields today, Friday, Oct. 8, in the first-ever match -up in Durham between two Catholic high school football squads. What makes Rainbow Ridge truly attractive is the benefit of living in a community which offers all the conveniences of living in a city while surrounded by a pleasant smalltown atmosphere. That, in fact, is the deciding factor when people buy at Rainbow Ridge. "Peace of mind -- that is what did it for us." says new homeowner Kathy, whose move -in date is just over one month away. "This is our first home and we couldn't be more pleased." Kathy says shopping for a new home took her and her family to Scarborough, at first, and they kept heading east looking for the right home. When they got to Rainbow Ridge, there wasn't a need to look any further. "It is totally relaxing," she says. "You can leave the office behind and forget all about the city." She also had plenty of praise for sales representative Indra Narine, whose sincerity helped sell the home, says Kathy. ..That is what kept us coming back — sincerity.- she says. -She repre- sents the builder. but you know that she is also representing you in help - inky you buv the home that best meets your needs." Design features of the homes of Rainbow Ridge include 800 series Colonial doors with painted Colonial trim, circular staircases, natural oak pickets and handrails, two coats of paint on all walls and trim, two color choices for broadloom and rough -ins for central vacuum system and dish- washer. Add the finifhing touches with your $10,000. Homes on 30 -foot lots are avail- able ranging up to 1,650 sq -ft. These homes feature the same luxurious features found in the bigger homes at Rainbow Ridge. To visit the newly decorated model home, just follow the signs from Liberty St. N. and Hwy. 2. How does it work? Is it used on all fabrics, for both fashion and furnish- ings? Does it protect against all spills and stains? As fabric care products become more sophisticat- ed, consumers are asking more questions. They seek attractive, comfortable homes com- bined with a carefree lifestyle: they seek colorful, fun fashions with built-in performance: they seek sportswear and workwear that will stay clean and comfortable. And they seek answers to their fabric care questions. Those answers are provided by experts at Du Pont, makers of Teflon fabric care products. Showcasing your walls From silks to sails, from boardrooms to bedrooms, from city -slicker rainwear to skytop skiwear, there's a fabric care product to protect almost everything from almost anything. The same magic that slides the eggs out of the fry- ing pan can slide spills and stains off ski jackets, upholstery, and virtually any kind of fabric. There are basically two kinds of fabric care prod- ucts: repellents and releasers. Soil, rain, and stain repellents form a molecular shield around the fibres, making them significantly more resistant to oil and water based stains, as well as repelling dust and dry soil. These products are used in upholstery and The walls of your home should reflect the moods of the rooms, while providing an attractive and subtle backdrop. If the walls of your home are beginning to show the telltale signs of daily wear -and -tear, there are many things you can do to spruce them back up and enhance the overall look and feel of your home. Re -painting may be the time -tested way of giving a room a fresh look, but there are a number of innovative techniques which have been tried and proven — such as covering scarred walls with shirred fabrics or applying wainscotting to walls in areas likely to fall victim to the "fingerprint syndrome." In fact, all it takes to refresh your walls is a little plan- ning, imagination and a sense of practicality. Before you decide to paint, wallpaper or cover the walls in one of your rooms, take a good, close look at them first to determine what type of shape they are in. If you have panelling and intend to remove it, be prepared for what may possibly lay underneath — like large cracks or badly damaged walls. If you plan to paint, consider the effect you want to create. Painting is probably the easiest and quickest way to revitalize a room. You can do many creative things with paint, including glazing — which can give you unique patterns like flecks or streaks or even a marble - like effect. This can be done by applying glaze with a sponge or brush or applying glaze and then smudging it. A popular choice with many homeowners these days, stencilling is not terribly difficult to do and there are numerous stencil patterns to choose from. consult some decorating or "how-to" books for examples and direc- tions. You may want to practice with different color com- binations on a large piece of paper first. However, if you want to go with a very ornate and special stencil patter, it is a good idea to consult a design expert first. You may want to hire an expert to apply the stencils as well. Soil and stain release products penetrate fibres. Activated by laundering, they allow soils and stains to be more easily released from the fabric. These products also make apparel fabrics more comfortable by increasing wickability - the ability to draw moisture away from the body and then evaporate - making clothing more comfortable. These products are used in fabrics for work- wear, sportswear and children's wear. That means that consumers don't have to worry about their clothing during active sports and messy chores. Most printed fabrics are given a soil and stain repellent finish at the mills, as the final step in fab- ric production. If you buy fabric by the yard, read the printing on the selvage to learn what type of finish has been applied. When buying a finished piece of furniture, look for a hang tag. A tag that says 'Teflon', for instance, assures you that the fabric finish has met Du Pont specifications. Many furniture retailers offer an after -treatment plan,in which the entire piece is sprayed with a fabric protector by a trained technician. This can be a valuable service. Even if the fabric has been treated, the extra treat- ment protects welting, trim, deck fabric, stitching and seams. Clothing which has been treated with either a soil/rain/stain repellent or a soil/release product will usually cam, a hang tag. When the Kaitlin Group announced plans for this Bowmanvilte develop- ment, there was great enthusiasm. The community would eventually house approximately 10,000 people, a shop- ping centre, a park, a recreation com- plex and be the eventual site for the proposed GO Transit station. The enthusiasm didn't stop there. It is now two years later. Approximately 200 satisfied families already call Aspen Springs home. The first phase of the development is fin- ished and cleaned up and phase two is underway. If you take a drive around Aspen Springs, you will notice that construction on the community park has started and it will soon he filled with activity. "We really planned the community carefully," says Kaitlin Group's vice president Gary Daniell. "The house designs, construction techniques and service are second to none. We are inviting people to come have a look at what Aspen Springs has to offer." Aspen Springs is well suited to dif- ferent requirements in home sizes and family lifestyle. Prices start at an extremely affordable $199,990. for one of the beautiful freehold town - homes. There are also large detached homes providing 2.446 -square -feet of living space on 50 -foot lots, homes on detached 40 -foot lots and link homes on 30 -foot lots. The Kaitlin Group is also offering some great incentives. Buying a home in Aspen Springs now will get you a $5,000 grant, that can be applied toward your downpayment, and an appliance package that includes stove, refrigerator, washer, dryer and built-in dishwasher. Regardless of the size of the home however, the Kaitlin Group has taken great care and paid close attention to detail and incorporated the thoughtful designs into all home styles. Even the townhomes feature attractive arched windows, decorative brickwork, vary- ing rooflines and recessed styling that makes for a pleasant streetscape. But houses are just part of the development. The Kaitlin Group has included plans for all facets of daily life. For example, there is a commer- cial development that includes exten- sive shopping facilities. Canadian Tire has already moved in and the com- mercial mall which includes a Loblaws store is close to becoming a reality. There are schools and recre- ation facilities and land has also been allocated for a proposed GO Transit station. Then there is Kaitlin's after-sales service. When you plan a community the size of Aspen Springs, the careful planning doesn't stop once construc- tion starts. Kaitlin stresses the importance of each resident and, with that in mind, the developer has established an effi- cient after-sales service department r that keeps information op each and every home sold in the community. This attention on the part of the developer ensures the purchaser of a positive homebuying experience, which translates to excellent referrals. In fact, a large number of homes sold in Aspen Springs thus far have come about as a result of "word-of-mouth" advertising. Aspen Springs is located on 500 acres on Martin Rd. Fireplaces are a focal point of any home — especially during the fall and winter months when they tend to be used the most. However, if you have a fireplace or wood stove, make sure you use it with care. Although the number of chimney fires has dropped somewhat in recent years — largely due to improved consumer awareness — you should try to keep a watchful eye on your fireplace dur- ing use and afterwards — especially if you use it a lot. To start with, inspect your flue (and pipes if you have a wood stove) on a regular basis — at least once a year if you don't use your fireplace much. Fireplace prevention authori- ties recommend that chimneys be thoroughly cleaned once a year — preferably by a professional chimney sweep. In addition to cleaning your chim- ney, a good chimney sweep will care- fully inspect any deposits inside your chimney and should be able to give you helpful suggestions on how to reduce the buildup of creosote. The main buildup of residue in your chimney is caused by the incomplete combustion of wood in the burning process. The resulting material — which is generally tar - like in appearance — is called cre- osote. This material is highly com- bustible and, if enough of it builds up, can ignite when you burn wood in your stove or fireplace. Chimney fires can cause a great deal of damage. For instance, the mortar in your chimney can become weakened from the intense heat of the fire. And flying sparks from the chimney fire could ignite your roof or any other nearby flammable sources. If you are unsure of the state of your chimney and don't recall when it was last cleaned, ask an expert to take a closer look to tell you what's required regarding maintenance and repair. Experts say the best way to keep creosote buildup at a minimum is to only use well -dried, seasoned wood. If the wood hasn't been dried thor- oughly, it will smolder and this will result in more buildup in your chim- ney because the more smoke you cre- LOOIUNQ TO BUY A NEW HOME? To determine how dry the wood is, inspect the end grain for cracks. You might even want to try pounding a nail into one of the ends. If it comes out visibly moist, you know the wood isn't completely dry. If you are using your fireplace or stove for heating purposes, then you'll probably want to use hard- wood. This type of wood is denser in compositions and has more energy content as a result. For "decorative" fires that are merely for aesthetics and serve no heating purpose, soft woods are fine. In fact, if you merely want to light a fire in your fireplace for decorative purposes — during the holiday sea- son for instance — you may want to consider using manufactured, pre- packaged logs which can be found in many hardware, grocery or conve- nience stores. However, if your fire is for heating purposes and you want to obtain heat quickly, you should build a small pile of loosely stacked pieces of wood in your stove or fireplace. If you want a longer -lasting fire, the wood should be stacked together more tightly. A good rule of thumb is to adjust the amount of wood you put in your stove or fireplace in accordance with the temperature outside. Fire prevention authorities suggest that you practice common sense when using your fireplace. Nothing should be hung below the mantle if you intend to use your fireplace. The hearth area should be also kept clear of objects in case of stray sparks. It's also a good idea to have a fire extinguisher nearby when operating your fireplace. In fact, it's advisable to have one in the house at all times. But make sure you're familiar with how to use it before a crisis occurs. Wood boxes should also be kept clear of the fireplace or stove unless it is actually built into the side of your fireplace. At least 1.2 metres is the recommended distance according to the fire code. It is also a good idea to empty the ash pan in your fireplace or wood stove on a regular basis. This only takes a few minutes and helps your fireplace perform at peak efficiency. Well-maintained home furnishings show pride of ownership and invite compliments. Follow the tips below, from Soul Shield International, to keep your upholstered furniture looking newer. longer. — Prevent fading by placing furni- ture out of direct sunlight. Ultraviolet rays of sunlight can fade fabrics. — Rotate cushions and pillows week- ly to redistribute wear and extend the 'life of upholstered furniture. — Re -arrange the position of your upholstery to ensure equal use on all cushions. This will also help to keep your carpet from wearing unevenly. — Vacuum upholstered furniture weekly. Use a clean crevice tool extension to lift out dust and food particles from seams and between cushions. This will also help to keep your carpet from wearing unevenly. Keep newspapers away from ,upholstered furniture. The ink can transfer onto the fabric. — Prevent indigo dyes from transfer- ring to light-colored upholstery by cautioning family members and guests with new blue jeans to use caution when sitting on the uphol- stery. — Discourage pets from sitting on or rubbing against upholstered furni- ture. Pet hair and body oil transfers easily to fabrics, causing general soiling. — Choose appropriate fabrics for upholstered furniture by the amount of wear they will receive every day. — Blot spills immediately with a clean. white cloth. If the spill is solid or semi-solid (like peanut but- ter or jelly) remove the excess by gently lifting it with a dull knife. The longer spills are allowed to remain, the more difficult they are to remove. — Always use recommended uphol- stery cleaning products. Never use general household cleaning products as some may contain bleach and abrasive cleaners. — If you find a stain on your uphol- stered furniture, always pre-test uphol- stery cleaning products on an incon- spicuous area of the furniture before using the product on the stain. te The gas are closing . at er. uttlllo• tints >'it r s a !w M c! You know it is time to get ready for the months ahead because winter isn't far away. With that in mind, here are a few tips on how to pre- pare your home for the arrival of Old Man Winter: ])Those lovely leaves in a storm of color are certainly beautiful to look at, but not when they are all over your lawn. Leaf clean-up can be a cinch with the tubular plastic frames which hold any standard 30 -gallon trash bag. When you have finished raking up the leaves or the bag is full, simply close the bag and lift the light plastic tube. These frames are easy to store and can be covered by a standard garbage can lid. 2) When this time of year arrives, do you agonize over where you will store your patio furniture, gas barbecue and even the bikes. You can solve storage problems of oversize items with heavy-duty vinyl and plastic cov- ers. There are a variety of sizes and shapes available which will keep outdoor furniture and other items clean and secure all year, and especially in winter. 3) Fall means moist ground and muddy spots. So, when it is time to come in from working in the yard, the whole family will appreciate a "brush mat." A piece of coarse outdoor carpet is ideal for brushing off dirt and mud from the bottom and sides of shoes. 4) But it is not only the outside of your home which needs preparation for the colder climate. Indoors, the biggest battle homeowners face is the heating bill. Energy experts agree that the biggest source of heat loss in the home is through the windows. Check the weatherstripping around your windows for cracks or decay. "Solar curtains" — sheets of transparent polyethylene plastic — help retain heat and you pocket the savings. 5) Another way to reduce home heating bills is to make sure the heat is going where it is needed most. Air deflectors and vent extenders are two products avail- able on the market which help in this battle. Air deflec- tors direct air flow from the floor duct into the centre of the room. Vent extensions are especially useful in places where a heating vent is covered by furniture or draperies. 6) Drafts creep under doors, too. Old Man Winter's attempts at getting into the home can be foiled with new weatherstripping. This flexible, water -proof vinyl seal is usually 1 1/2 to 2 inches wide and 36 inches long, which can be cut to fit any size door. Position it so that it makes contact with the floor surface to close out drafts. 7) We all know, especially those of us which don't have central air conditioning systems, and appreciate the benefits of a window air conditioner during the hot, humid days of summer. During the winter however, window air conditioners can be sources of chilling drafts. Smart homeowners use air -conditioner covers — indoors and out — to provide protection from win- ter's blasts. Winterizing, organizing or making simple home improvements are easy when using the wide range of products available at your hardware or home improve- ments store. Technology adds value to home From the comfort of an easy chair, a homeowner has the world at the touch of a button. Through the wonder of modem technology, we can control tele- visions, VCRs and our sound systems without getting up from our chairs. But remote controls allows us to control other comfort fea- tures of our homes — like gas fireplaces, for example. Remote controls are only a selling feature. Fireplaces add Fireplace inserts come in a range of sizes to fit most f re- place openings. For added convenience, a remote control can regulate gas -fueled units from the comfort of an easy chair. comfort and value to a home. Wood-buming or gas -fueled fireplace systems can be fitted in just about any home. "By applying technology, we have dramatically improved the efficiency of (wood -burning) stoves and fireplaces and have made it easy and inexpensive to install in any room," say - Dennis Dillon, president of fireplace manufacturer Vermont Castings. Technology also allows the homeowner to improve the effi- ciency of an open fireplace. Recent studies have document- ed the extreme inefficiency of open fireplaces. They exhaust huge quantities of air up the flue, resulting in drafts that pull additional heat out of the home. These studies state the efficien- cy of open fireplaces is only ive or six per cent. The homeowner can dramat- ically increase the efficiency of an existing open fireplace by installing a gas -fuelled fire- place- Gas -fueled fireplace inserts offer added efficiency and the convenience of acces- sories like a remote control. Installing a fireplace also increases the value of the home. A recent article printed in Remodeling magazine says a fireplace can return as much as 140 per cent of the homeown- er's investment. Window coverings add a touch of elegance to home There are many things that put the right finish- ing touch to a home. Among the biggest, in terms of size and financial investment, is win- dow coverings. With the multitude of styles and fabrics now available to the consumer, it's easy to transform a home without too great an effort. Over the years, home decorators have graduat- ed from having options in drapery styles, to blinds that include aluminum, vinyl and assort- ed fabrics. And changes are continuing. Blinds, in exciting styles are available from such manufacturers. Two among the latest offerings from Hunterpouglas are Duette, and Silhouette. Duette honeycomb shades will spice up any window. The patented honeycomb construction combines the luxury of soft fabric with remark- able strength and superior performance. These come in a seemingly limitless range of colors, and provide energy -efficiency by trap- ping air between the honeycomb design, which acts as an insulator. Duette has no visible cords, holes or seams. Another new design by Hunterpouglas. Silhouette, is an attention -grabbing covering that, while offering privacy: does not block ou= light. Silhouette has a fine sheer at the front and the back, with a fabric slat sandwiched between the two. It is blinds and sheers combined. The result. when closed, is that the room is submerged in a soft glow, the shade of the fab- ric slat. When open, there is a subdued, opalescent translucency. As well, Silhouette shades have no support cords to detract from the distinctive look. And the mounting hardware is designed to enhance the total look. Both these Hunterpouglas designs are avail- able at local Durham dealers, and are a sign of still more to come. Where do you find the best deals in new homes?
