Accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Jean Charest, she visited Pine Ridge Sec- ondary School and the campaign headquar- ters of Tore !VIP Rene Soetens. Several hundred well-wishers, armed with cameras and sporting PC campaign buttons, jostled and elbowed to get a close-up glimpse of the Pnme Minister as she stepped off her blue -arid -white bus at Mr. Soetens's headquarters, Brock Rd. and Hwy. 2, shortly after noon. Wearing a grey suit, black pumps and a smile, Ms. Campbell was greeted with cheers, chants and applause by the crowd. She was met by a group of youngsters from Valley Farm Day Care, who presented her with home- made greeting cards. The Prime Minister took time to read each card and thank each each child by name before turning her attention to the task at hand — winning a majority government in the OCL 25 election. "Forty-five days from now, Canadi- ans are going to make an important choice," she told her supporters. "Our job is to get out there and earn that support" Recently criticized by the Liberal opposition as having no concrete solu- tions to offer jobless Canadians, Ms. Campbell assured the crowd there are many things she'd like to do and "as soon as this election is over, we're going to roll up our sleeves and get down to it." She called on supporters to spread the message of the "party with a vision" and urged the re-election of Mr. Soetens, who she earlier had kissed on both cheeks. Ms. Cooper maintained the Tories make "tough decisions", and added she hopes the party will tighten up both the Young Offenders' Act and the country's immigration policy. Earlier in the morning at Pine Ridge Secondary School, Ms. Campbell and Mr. Charest met with about 40 students in the library, answering questions on topics that included AIDS, the national deficit, education, the Young Offenders' Act and more. Chosen to officially greet her in the library was student Jeremy Slater, who was excited at the prospect. "It's not every day you get to meet the Prime Minister." The students meeting with Ms. Campbell were chosen by school administration, he said, and, "We had a practice session yesterday to buff up the questions." Also greeting the Prime Minis- ter was student council president Kent McDonald, who'll be eligi- ble to vote in an election for the first time this fall. Admitting he's undecided about who he'll support on Oct. 25, Mr. McDonald said Ms. Campbell was "very nice. She was talking about how she was president, too, of a student coun- cil." We will, for the first time, start the budget process in the fall and we will put out a clear state- ment of where we are economi- cally, put forward a series of options for expenditure cuts and priorities in government expendi- ture, which Canadians will have a chance to look at. Mr. Manning said Canada now has its finger in three pies: the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD), the North Atlantic Treaty Organiza- tion (NATO) and United Nations (UN) peacekeeping. In order to do what it does bet- ter, he said, Canada has to cut back from the three areas to "one and a half" — concentrating on national defence through NORAD while carrying out a secondary role with the UN. Evert Vroegh of Bowmanville, who immigrated to Canada in 1965, said former Tory Prim[ Minister Brian Mulroney's deci- sion to raise immigration levels was sapping jobs from existing Canadians. While the Reform Party is "pro -immigration," Mr. Manning said, levels must be set by "eco- nomic and labor force require- ments." Mr. Manning also suggested two key questions that voters should ask all political hopefuls. Ask them, he urged, "if there's a connection between record lev- els of deficit and debt, and record levels of unemployment." And is it possible, he asked rhetorically, that one is the root cause of the other — so that fixing one would go a long way to fixing the other? It's an alarm provincial officials must hear before they go ahead with plans to open another landfill in Durham Region. Dr. Joseph Cummins, associate professor of genetics at the University of Western Ontario, says that dumps in general may cause neighboring residents to bear children with birth defects, experience miscarriages, and suffer from cancer and nervous disorders. And, he claims, Pickering's Brock West dump in particular is likely poisoning our children and polluting our drinking water. Additionally, methane gas produced at the landfill is heavily polluted with carcinogens and the migrating gas could cause deadly explosions in homes near the site, the doctor contends. He was hired by Pickering -Ajax Citizens Together (PACT) for the Environment to analyze the landfill. Granted, some might question his findings based on tate fact the pro- fessor was paid by a group lobbying for the closure of the Brock West dump and against the opening of future landfills here. But, we doubt he'd fudge his findings and exaggerate the hazards posed by dumps, thereby risking his reputation in his field of expertise. And, as PACT technical committee chairman David Strain notes, Dr. Cummins came up with his analysis after examining reports which ongi- nated either with Metro Toronto, which owns and operates the landfill, or the provincial ministry of the environment. If environment ministry officials are indeed aware of the health haz- ards that Dr. Cummins claims dumps pose, they'd better fess up. That done, environment minister Bud Wildman must re -think his governmen- t's reliance on landfills as the solution to our waste crisis before opening another one in Pickering, Durham or anywhere else, for that matter. It's bad enough that people living near Brock West are buried under mounds of trash. It would be tragic if they were buried by it as the good doctor implies might happen. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Alternatives must be looked at Jirport land sale not a simple deal To the editor, L. VanHaheren takes a far too narrow perspective in his response to your July 28 article "Deja vu for airport residents". A large group of ordinary citi- zens, community grasps and envi- ronmental organizations from across Ontario have banded together in a "Green Door Alliance" to specifically address all matters pertaining to the future of the Pickering airport and Seaton lands. We feel that the future this 60 square miles of CLI class 1 and 2 foodland, threaded with many miles of lush river val- leys and several communities is worthy of greater consideration than merely its real estate value. The total worth of this national asset far exceeds the sum of its parts. Parts is what Ottawa is sell- ing. It is foolhardy in the extreme to consider that the sale of this scarce natural resource will pre- serve it in food production. Not a house has been built on these airport lands in the last two decades. There are in fact fewer houses now than there were in '72. Mr. VanHalteren suggests that the sale of this 5,100 acres will reduce the national debt. If indeed it does, it will be by about the cost of one of our infamous helicopters. I doubt if there will one single farmer prepared to plunk down $400,000.or $50,000 Cartoon disliked To the editor, I'm not bragging, but I worked for nearly eight years with the Salvation Army with alcoholic and drug related men. You could call it "skid -row" for that is how far down these men were in society, rock bottom. During that period of time, I was at Vancouver and Victoria, B.C., and in the Toronto area. Never once did any of these men ever swear or use foul lan- guage or suggestive talk or actions before me. On Saturday (Aug. 29) I opened the News Advertiser to read the `Letters to the editor' and there was a foul suggestive editorial cartoon which needed no commentary. Surely your paper doesn't have to stoop so low, as to print such "garbage". As your "reader" I would ask you to refrain from lowering your standards as a renowned paper. Bernice Harcourt, Ajax for a farmhouse on a 100 acres. Developers, speculators and a few rich executives perhaps. Acreage in the rural area now goes for $2,000 to S3,000 an acre. The homes might get them anoth- er S10 or S15 million for a total net income of a mere S20 to $30 million dollars. But they are spending millions for teams of consultants plus staff and infras- tructure just to decide how to do it. Of coarse, hundreds of homes and thousands of acres will further depress the local real estate mar- ket, and the prospect of a nearby International Airport won't increase residential land values. Taken in conjunction with the Ontario lands immediately to the south, this is a huge tract of land. Placed over Toronto with its south end on Center Island the northern tip would be at Steeles Avenue. The western limit would be at High Park and the Eastern at Woodbine Race Track. The pro- posed sale of 10 per cent, in wide- ly separate chunks, will destroy the potential to do something unique with this special piece of rural Ontario. It is interesting to note that the people who badly misjudged Toronto's airport requirements and then botched the expropria- tion, are the same people who have badly mismanaged their land holdings for the last 21 years and are now messing up the resale. Does no tate in Ottawa realize they have an obligation to handle the return in a sensitive manner? This is not simply another federal asset to be unloaded like their Petrocan shares. It is not just a chunk of real estate. It is a collec- tion of communities, the sale of which will impact significantly on the larger communities of Picker- ing, Markham and Uxbridge. We do not want more federal lip service; we want an in-depth investigation of all relevant aspects; social, environmental, municipal, economics, planning and many other matters including the likelihood of an airport, long term planning for the entire feder- al land holding, and the various needs and rights of the affected residents and the previous owners. First and foremost we want the selling process stopped until the community has had time to prop- erly investigate this complex issue from all points of view; including Mr. VanHalteren's. The member organizations of the Green Door Alliance want what is best for the present and future residents of Pickering, not what is best for Ottawa. They took the lands without thinking about it, they've misman- aged them for 21 years and they are perpetuating their dismal record by rushing into this sale without even looking at the many viable alternatives. THE NEWS ADVERWER Religious groups seek school funds By LINDA WHITE Staff Reporter DURHAM - A host of reli- gious groups fighting for the right to have their schools funded by the Province want to be "treated on equal footing" as Catholics. But extending that "traditional right of Catholics" would "take money out of existing classrooms" which already offer "ample room for diverse views," argues your Queen's Park representative. "We are all taxpayers," says Ikram Makki, a Muslim who recently fought for the right to use a vacant building in Pickering as a place of worship despite resis- tance by neighbors. "Canada is a multicultural, multifaced and multilingual coun- try. We should be given the choice and freedom to practise our own faith without any prejudice," explains the father of three. That freedom exists now, according to Durham West MPP Jim Wiseman. "They can choose to send (their children) to private schools or public schools. It's an expense they can accept or avoid." A group of Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims, fundamentalist Christians and other major reli- gions in Ontario went to court this week in hopes of overturning a ruling which last year dismissed a claim of five Jewish parents who challenged the government's refusal to finance religious schools. "Education is something that falls into the area of parental rights, but some injustice exists," according to Stan Baker, principal of Immanuel Christian School in Oshawa. (The parent -run school has 140 students in junior kinder- garten through Grade 8 and charges annual tuition fees of 55,700 per family.) Mr. Baker points to parents of a boy with spina bifida forced to pay transportation costs to and from a Christian school. "If he was enroled in a public or separate board that would have been paid for," Mr. Baker notes. "1 don't think Christian schools are asking for 100 per cert fund- ing," he says, suggesting Ontario follow the lead of western provinces which give substantial grants to private schools. Mr. Baker believes the public board's "phenomenal and unenvi- able task" of educating students of diverse religious backgrounds could be alleviated through partial funding of religious schools. "They use Roman Catholic edu- cation as an example, but that debate was held" and funding was approved because of rights enshrined in the British North America Act, notes Mrs. Farr. "Other groups don't have that same historical background." While the Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board "supports the rights of indi- vidual groups to have some fund- ing," it fears the costs of such a move, reports vice -chair Mary Zecchino. The association fighting for funding "has valid arguments," but a decision to finance other religious groups would "deteriorate and fragment" school boards already "fighting for limited resources," she argues. Almost 75,000 students attend 500 private schools in Ontario. It would cost S480 million to fund those schools, according to Mr. Wiseman. Queen's Park will fight this week's appeal, saying the funding of independent schools will lead to a diminished public school system and undermine its ability to build tolerance in a multicultural society. School reform 'has potential' By LINDA WHITE Staff Reporter DURHAM - A council which will give parents a platform to voice their opinions on education reform "has the potential to do a lot," says a school watchdog here. But the value of the 18 -mem- ber Ontario Parent Council announced Tuesday "depends on how it's organized", says Patti Charbonneau of the Quality Edu- cation Network of Durham. "Will it be a token to appease parents to make them feel involved or will the ministry (of education and training) really lis- ten to us?" asks the Pickering res- ident. According to a press release issued by the ministry, the council will "be a valuable resource...in planning future programs and pol- icy" as it shares with the ministry its views on the education system. But the council is criticized by a Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board trustee as "another special interest group" that will take away from the decision-making process. "We're fragmenting the whole (education) system again," laments vice -chair Mary Zecchi- no. "It's a good idea to have par- ents' opinions expressed, but they're already represented on different committees. Trustees are there to represent them, too." She's also critical of the min- istry for making decisions "with- out even consulting school boards ... I'm completely confused by it all." While Durham Board of Edu- cation chair Louise Farr applauds the provincial government "for encouraging parents to be involved in their children's educa- tion," she believes the council "needs to be broadened." The tourney used a round- robin format with the top team being declared the champion. Power finished with a record of three wins and one loss and were declared the tourney's runners- up. Y Pickering Power faced a strong Waterloo squad in the first game. Waterloo took the lead midway through the first half. Power's Caren Maher scored on a 30 -yard strike to tie the game just before the end of the half. The second half saw a more aggressive Power attack led by Aimee Teteris' four unanswered goals resulting in a 5-1 Pickering win. The U.S.L. Travellers provid- ed the opposition for Power in the second match. Despite con- trolling much of the play and get- ting a super defensive effort from fullback Andrea Mitchell, Picker- ing gave up a goal to the Trav- ellers midway through the second half. The Travellers hung on for a 1-0 win in a game played under adverse field conditions. Cambridge Kickers, Power's -next opponent, were hemmed in their own end for much of the first half. However, Pickering was only able to find the net once, on a chip shot by Aimee Teteris. The second half was totally dominated by Pickering and saw goals by Heather Barnes with two, and singles by Teteris, Maher, Mitchell and Heidi Sausik, completing a 7-0 rout of Cambridge. The final game pitted Picker- ing against a determined Northville Sting team from Michigan. Teteris, with her light- ning speed, struck for two goals in the first five minutes. Natalie Higgins scored on a header off a great corner kick by Rupi Rand- hawa, giving Power a 3-0 half- time lead. The Sting were relent- less in their attack and scored early in the second half. Powers' defensive corps came to the fore- front and preserved the victory which gave Pickering the run- ners-up trophies. Ajax Wanderers help Ontario win rugby titles AJAX-PICKERING - Ajax Wanderers Rugby Club women paced Ontario to the Canadian championship last weekend while male players help the provincial squad earn a berth in the national showdown. Eleven Wanderers helped the Ontario women's rugby team win the national title at the Canadian _Senior Women's Rugby Champi- onships in Ste. Foy, Quebec, near Quebec City. Six other provinces — British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec and Nova Scotia — took pan in the national tournament. In the finals on Monday, Ontario defeated Alberta 23-8 to win the national crown for the second consecutive year. Wander- er Annetle Shiels booted two con- verts and added three penalty -kicks for Ontario in the final. Janet Burrell, an Ajax resident amently playing for the Yeoman Rugby Club, added a try for Ontario. Ontario crushed Quebec 30-0 in the semi-final contest played last Sunday. 4gain, Wanderers players figured prominently in the scoring for the Ontario squad. Chandy Davis scored a try, while Shiels kicked two converts and chipped in two penalty kicks in .the winning cause. Eight Wanderers were in the starting line-up for both the semi- final and final games — Caroline Werheid, Helen Russell, Chandy Davis, Sandra Muller, Joanne Gardner, Jen Ross and Annette Shiels. Charlotte Mathie was hurt in the fast game and was replaced by another Wanderer — Doreen Fernandez. Heidi Fischer and Laurie Lundy were reserves for the Ontario team. Wanderers men Kart Svoboda, captain of the Ontario team, John Druce and Roger Robinson played for the provincial squad at the Tier One National Men's Rugby Championships in Edmonton. Other provinces represented at the tournament were Alberta, Saskatchewan and Quebec. Defending champion British Columbia received a bye at the tier one playdowns. Ontario met Quebec in the semi-final game last Saturday, emerging with a 24-9 victory. In the final against Alba Ontario won 34-9. Ontario will now meet British Columbia in the Canadian Senior Men's Rugby Championship. The Rags to Riches Futurity, with a purse in excess of $25,000, will be run over a dis- tance of 400 yards. Eight two- year-old horses have qualified to compete in the prestigious event. The pre -race favorite is Oceans Ten, trained by Lori Pearson for owner Jacqueline Demers. This horse has won five straight races as a two-year-old and will be running hard to make the Rags to Riches Futurity win � : number six. Win For Grande, owned by Barry Wood, will be trying for an upset in the race. The Rags to Riches Futurity consolation race will also be contested on Sunday. This event involves the next fastest eight horses who failed to qualify for the championship race. Picov Downs has fun for the whole family with pony rides for the kids offered during race day. Picov Downs is seeking approval from the Ontario Rac- ing Commission to have inter - track wagering where spectators can also wager on live races if from the Ontario Jockey Club's Woodbine Race Track. It is fur- ther proposed, subject to approval, to have inter -track wagering at a suitable location each week after Picov Downs finishes its racing season in mid- October.
