Pickering is "desperate for volunteers" says local Block Parent chairman Kathy Green - sides, who adds she'll soon be leaving the organization herself. "There's a problem all over. It is very difficult to do without volun- teers." Only five Pickering volunteers are on the executive committee, she says, and "the same people are doing all the jobs." She estimates less than 1,500 of Pickering homes display a Block Parent sign, which sig- nal a safe place for neighborhood children to turn if they're in difficulty. Cops hope Pickering 1 car -jacking an isolated incident PICKERING - Three people were forced out of their vehicles at gunpoint here late Thursday evening in what police are describing as a 'car -jacking', a crime that's becoming more prevalent and deadly in the U.S. A Durham Regional Police spokesman says the car - jacking appears to be the first of its kind here and is an isolated incident, I hope." Around 11:15 p -m. at the Pickering Playing Fields, 1668 Bayly St., a 23 -year-old Ajax man employed by Metro Toronto Police and his girlfriend were sitting in a Jimmy Blazer and another man was parked next to them. Police say a westbound silver Audi passed the spot, turned around, pulled into the parking lot of a neigh- bonng fine station and then into the Pickering Playing Fields lot. Police say there were six males inside the Audi, which pulled up behind the Jimmy. One man got out of the Audi, pointed a gun at the face of the man in the adjacent perked car and ordered him ouL Meanwhile, the driver of the Jimmy attempted to back his vehwk out, but was punched in the fate and ordered out of the truck. And it's none too soon, his challengers charge. "I used to lean a little more to the 18th, now I lean to the 25th," says Ontario Riding Progressive Conservative MP Rene Soetens. "It'll be one or the other, I think." Still, he believes "there will continue to be rumors" until Prime Minister Kim Campbell sets the official date. Because 47 days' notice is required before an election can be called, voters must be told by Sept. 1 if they're to vote Oct. 18, while an Oct. 25 election must be called by Sept. 8. Unless the government holds an election by Oct. 25. electoral lists prepared for last year's constitutional referen- dum will no longer be valid. It would cost an estimated S15 million to enumerate voters again. Mr. Soetens believes the Progressive Conservatives can win another election with Prime Minister Campbell at the helm. "She said she would do pol- itics differently (than Brian Mulroney) and she's proven exactly that," he says, pointing to a new cabinet as one exam- ple. As well, MPs spent two days in Ottawa discussing party platforms. "I'm not aware of that having been done before." says Mr. Soetens. Ontario Riding NDP candi- date Lynn Jacklin believes the election date will be announced by Sept. 7. "The Conservative govern- ment would like to look good by saving taxpayers' money by not doing another enumera- tion." She says she's ready for the race. "We've been canvassing and organizing and working hard and we're ready to go. We've been waiting for this for a long time." It's time other parties got their share of the limelight after Prime Minister Camp- bell's -free campaigning Ms. Jacklin adds. -She's pretty well crossed the country and has taken advantage of the press. - Reform Party candidate Don Sullivan predicts Ms. Campbell will announce this Tuesday or Thursday that the election will be Oct. 18. The fallout of the social contract is just beginning to hit the ground. A report in the Globe and Mail earlier this week says some Ontario teachers, principals and school board administrators are afraid that social contract pressures will cause changes that will inevitably affect students. They are saying that, while basics such as math, English and histo- ry won't be affected, other forms of education will be, including extra- curricular activities, field trips and enrichment programs such as art, music and library services. If it is true, then it's a shame. Those field trips. art classes and extra -curricular activities are essential components to a well-rounded education. If they are cut back, then our students will suffer. So far there is no indication that such programs are in jeopardy in Durham Region. Durham Board of Education chair, Louise Farr, says she hasn't heard indications from local unions concerning cuts to extra -curricular activities. And Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board vice chair. Mary Zecchino, says teachers "are upset but recog- nize there was no choice for them but to sign on." They are not dis- cussing witholding services. But the school year has not yet begun, and Mrs. Fan: points out that the social contract is a tangled web they are just beginning to unweave. The public board is looking at cuts amounting to $1 1.5 million, and the separate board is facing S3.55 million in reductions, which will mean wage freezes, days off without pay and lower staffing levels. It's hard to believe that, when all is said and done, such a substantial change won't eventually hurt students in some way. Let's keep our fingers crossed that it won't. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Stop spraying pesticides To the editor: It's time the town of Ajax seriously reviewed its policy of spraying pesticide. A few obser- vations made over the last two years follow. If some seem too strange to be true, rest assured that they are in fact quite com- mon. 1. Last summer along Har- wood Ave. and Pickering Beach Rd. town employees (or contrac- tors) sprayed pesticide along the edges of back fences, the bases of light poles and signs killings all vegetation (everything, grass too). Only now are plants returning to these barren areas. Equity Act discriminates To the editor, Bob Rae's government now wants applicants to provide information on race and edmici- ty. The employment Equity Act has created four privileged groups; aboriginals, the dis- abled, women and racial minori- ties. Now there is talk that the gay rights group are upset because they are not included. Any other group want to jump on the band wagon? Employ- ment Equity is social racism and it means racially -based manda- tory job quotas, contrary to the merit principal. Now in Ontario, racism is being directed against whites, especially male white. The Employment Equity Act should be changed to read the Unemployment Discrimination Act That way, we could select white males at random, fire them and replace them with peo- ple from the selected groups. Education and merit will no longer be recognized, but, skin color will be the key in creating a divisive and ugly society where group rights will over- shadow individual rights. Sounds like this government is finding ways to create a new apartheid right here in Ontario. Andy Cobean Pickering At one point the sprayer was misdirected at a section of pri- vatc hedge. It is now brown. Is it so terrible that plants grow close to poles and signs in Ajax? Can't they be trimmed? 2. Two years ago a green powdered herbicide was used to kill plants growing between the cracks in the pavement in front of our town hall. A toddler was scolded by his mother for play- ing with the powder. The rusty colored plants stayed put all summer. Why weren't the plants just pulled out? It's. the same this year. Go look. 3. The south side of Hwy. 2 between Canadian Tire and Westney Road was sprayed with 24D in early July. Only so called "weeds" grow on that stretch because road salt has made the soil too alkaline. Now nothing will grow there. Why not just mow the "weeds"? At least they're green, and alive, and look better than barren dirt. 4. In the parking lot by the Harwood Plaza opposite the library new little groves of plants were planted and the base was covered with wood ships. In July they (and the walkway) were sprayed with 24D. Any so- called weeds could have been pulled out in five minutes with no special equipment. All these observations are typical and show a waste of tax- payers' money and and an irre- sponsible disregard for the envi- ronment. One sprayer commented that lawns produce oxygen. Well we, but grass is not very high on the list of oxygen -producing plants and surely lower than the plants which are killed so that it can grow. Grass is OK if left to grow on its own but its prejudicial sur- vival at the cost of a wide vari- ety of useful plants has become an irrational obsession for sim- ple-minded esthetic purposes. I know of at least two houses in Ajax where large trees were removed because they hindered the grass. A tree produces thou- sands of times more oxygen than grass. With cuts to everything we need like GO, health care and education it's amazing that town council still approves spraying. If they really want grass they should check out Durham Region's 5 R book which tells how to get your lawn off chemi- cals.
