Granting the Council of Islamic Guidance proper zoning to use a vacant building as a place of wor- ship was unanimously opposed by the Cherrywood Residents' Asso- ciation, whose members suggested the Muslims are outsiders. "Its been hinted our opposition is in a discriminatory manner. I assure you this is not the case," said Ron Palace, president of the residents' group. "We do not con- sider our community the right place for intrusion by an outside community. -M far as we're con- cerned, (a Muslim church) has nothing to do with Pickering. It has nothing to do with Cherrywood." But many Muslims in the group are local residents, said spokes= Sip Akbar. They include Ikram Makki, whose family has lived in Pickering for 12 years. Mr. Makki said the words "invaded" and "intrusion" make him "very, very disWpoWed.and very uneasy- We are living in the 20th century ... We are all human beings, flesh and blood. Town council was told the Islamic group has no plans to enlarge the vacant building, once used as a schoolhouse. The Islamic Council has already purchased it. It was also pointed out that Muslims do not permit music or dancing and that the building will be used for quiet meetings and ser- vices. The Islamic group has also offered Cherrywood use of the building as a community centre. Traffic congestion was often cited as a concern by Cherrywood residents, but Malcolm Lategan was chastised by council when he suggested property values will suf- fer because of the Muslim church. His wife, Meg, spoke later in the meetmg. "I really resent the imph- cation this is racially based. Our objection it the traffic." Only one ran -Muslim spoke in favor of the church. Elke Ahmed scolded Cherrywood residents for thinking, "Anything that's grange is just not right You cannot isolate yourself, this is a different world now. These are decent people. Groen Dump lawsuit put on hold PICKERING - A proposed lawsuit against '.Metro Toronto over the Brock West dump was turned down b) Pickering council Monday on the advice of solici- tors_ Council voted 4 against immediately seeking a court injunction to ha,*e the dump closed and to sue Metro, owner of the landfill, for compensation. Politicians believe Metro has vio- lated certificates of approval and contracts by deliberately overfill- ing the dump, an allegation ini- tially made by Pickering -Ajax Citizens' Together kPACT) for the Environment. Immediate court action is favored by PACT and councillors Rick Johnson, Maurice Brenner and Enrico Pistnuo. "It's so obvi- ous they slap our faces day in and day out," said Mr. Brenner of Metro. "I don't think this council has anN option. You know that PACT is not wrong (in its allega- tion the dump has been over- filled)." PACT also says Metro is allowing toxic leachate to seep from the dump into surrounding ground water. Mr. Johnson argued Pickering should sue Durham Region as well, because it's considering entering into a deal with Metro that will see Brock West used for Durham's garbage only while Durham taxpayers pay the cost of the landfill's perpetual care. "If they want to get in bed with Metro, fine. I think we should be suing them both. People in Pick- ering are fed up with garbage and the smell and leachate coming out of the ground." Sears Travel Service. Ont. Reg. #2264141. F Grant aids library, creates new fobs AJAX - A $209,287 provincial grant will help create four part- time jobs at a new branch of the Ajax Public Library. The money will be used to pay some of the construction and architectural costs for the 6,000 - square -foot branch in a new com- munity centre, says chief librarian Geoff Nie. Construction work on the $8 - million community centre at the corner of Westney Rd. and Magill Dr. began recently and will be completed by the fall of 1994. The provincial government gave the Town an $800,000 grant to help cover the costs of the community centre. The new grant is in addition to a previous one. Durham West MPP Jim Wise- man announced the new grant last week. The new grant helps free up money to buy furniture and equip- ment, Mr. Nie says. "It makes it a more attractive project," he adds. The grant comes from the job- sOntario Community Action fund. Money for the library grant came at the same time the provin- cial government was trying to reach a social contract with public sector employees. "It's only because of what we're doing with the social con- tract and other reassessments of programs that we can continue to fund worthwhile projects like this. This is an investment in the community. The payback is immeasurable," Mr. Wiseman says. The new branch is the first expansion of the Ajax library sys- tem since 1975, Mr. Nie says. Teen breaks arm in auger accident CLAREMONT - A 17 -year- old Uxbridge boy is listed in good condition in hospital after a piece of his clothing was caught in an auger and his arm severely fractured. The teen was digging a hole at Cherry Downs Golf & Coun- try Club at Brock Rd. and Conc. 7 when the accident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday. The auger was attached to a tractor idling at a slow speed, Durham Regional Police report. The teen was taken by air ambulance to Sunnybrook Health and Science Centre in Toronto, where he remained with a compound fracture to his right arm yesterday. The ministry of labor has been called in to investigate. The youngster. who fought vul- tures and dogs for food atop a dump he called home. then broke the tasty treasure in half and shared it with the boy beside him. That generosity touched the hearts of dozens of Bayfair Baptist Church members who recently retumed from a two-week mission to Guatemala. Memories of some 5.000 people. more than half chil- dren. who live in plastic tents perched on a Guatemala City dump will haunt them always. "It was like standing on the edge of hell." recalls Sam Martin, church pastor. "Babies were born on the dump, people ate and slept there. They moved to the city thinking they would make a living. but couldn't. They're caught in the cycle of poverty." He says the country, which lies on the southern border of Mexico. "has never recovered" from an earthquake 21 years ago. Though the tremor lasted just 42 seconds. it left 25.000 dead and millions of others injured and homeless. "The smell, you wanted to cover your face but couldn't because it would offend the people who live there," he says. lifting his hand to his nose at the memos. "To see kids living in a dump, no one should have to live like that." adds Al Goodall. "Before the garbage was even dumped, people would be sifting through it." Ironically. "stuff we would have thrown out here was like a million dollars there." he says of a 45 -foot container the church had shipped to Guatemala filled with used washing machines, carpets, bicycles, clothing, paint, kitchen sinks and fencing, as well as dental equipment for a new clinic. While in Guatemala, a team of 50 church members, aged 14 to 70, renovated a summer camp for poor children and worked in orphan- ages. Such simple tasks as bathing children and providing them with clean clothing and used toys were appreciated. "Their smiles, you'd think you had given them the whole world," says Mary Ann Heath. "For some kids, it was the first time they had ever felt warm water. They gave you hugs, which was very gratifying." For Janine Gagne, the job of "gate control" was "hard" because she had to tum away hun- dreds of children wanting baths. "Imagine telling a child they're not dirty enough." Seeing just how malnourished many children were shocked Jennifer Fowlds. "I had seen com- mercials on TV about sponsoring children and saw how thin those kids were. But I had no idea how bad it was until I got (to Guatemala) and saw the conditions they live in. It was hard to take. I appreciate Canada so much more now." int eexala7 ciu�rp Touched by the plight of this young girl, Katie Gillies vows to help by spon- soring her. The trip "put a face to sponsorship" for Katie Gillies, who met the child her parents sponsor through the Anes of Jesus Children's Mission, a Pickering -based project established by Pastor Martin but run independently of his church. "At first, the boy didn't want to come to me," she remembers. `But after he was told about the sponsorship, he ran to me and wouldn't stop hugging me. It just breaks your heart. I'm not one to cry, but I cried then." That's when Miss Gillies decided to sponsor the boy's younger sister. Their father can't work after being blinded in an accident and they live in a one -bed shack. The trip also proved inspirational for a cou- ple who took 80 pairs of shoes for needy chil- dren. DURHAM - The executive director of the Oshawa Durham Rape Crisis Centre has accused a Toronto newspaper of "getting into the realm of journalistic archeology" with a recent story on the grim state of the province's sexual assault centres. Sandy Saunders says in a Men nabbed for drug trafficking PICKERING - Three men have been charged with pos- session of drugs for the pur- pose of trafficking after a routine police check. At around 3:45 a.m. Wednesday, Durham Region- al Police pulled over a car near Altona Rd. and Hwy. 2. The centres across Ontario began to receive significant provincial funding when the Bob Rae government came into power in 1990, she notes. Prior to that, "We were strictly a volunteer effort existing on very little provincial funding plus whatever we could raise our- selves." The S15,000 received in 1989, for instance, was increased to S80,000 and $300,000 in the fol- lowing two years. While forcing the centre to upgrade administrative and accounting sophistication, she says, "It also proved to be an irre- sistible target for a few unscrupu- lous employees. "Certain individuals were ter- minated after the monetary dis- crepancies were discovered and since then we have taken steps to ensure compliance with financial reporting guidelines and tight- ened our legal and administrative procedures." Ms Saunders says she finds it distressing that the newspaper story had reportedly triggered a furor within the government when "The so-called furor arose long ago and appropriate action was taken. Town council heard the message loud and clear as Cherrywood Resi- dents' Association members banded together to cite traffic congestion as the main objection to the church. The Council of Islamic Guidance has purchased a vacant building in Chem,wood and intends to fix it up for meetings, services and classes for their children. Although the building is just sitting there empty. Chemwood people say they'd object just as strenuously if a local Lions club or a Presbyteri- an congregation wanted to use it because they'll be "inundated" with cars. But the residents' true feelings, perhaps, were revealed in council chambers when they spoke of "outsiders" invading Cherrywood and — sad but true — falling property values. For shame, Cherrywood. The "outsiders" who want to worship in the hamlet include Pickering residents, like Ikram Makki, who's lived in our community for 12 years and in our country for 26 years. This taxpayer — our neighbor —rightly spoke of his "hurt' and "disappointment". And, while Sip Uhar of the Islamic Council said his group was not trying to turn the issue into a racial battle, he did admit that, during public meetings and telephone conversations, "some of the things I was asked were very inappropriate." Chem -wood seems to think it has the right to declare itself off limits to the rest of Pickering. Residents argue they already have a church (United), and don't need another. The Islamic Council has said Cherry - wood can use its building too, but residents say they alreadv have a com- munity centre, and don't need another. Who do they think they are' ° Cherrywood didn't seem to feel it was separate from the rest of Pick- enng a few years ago when residents were screaming that they had the right to unpolluted drinking water, a commodity their taxpaying neigh- bors to the south were enjoying. The fact is, all of us have the right to meet and worship in any com- munity we want to. We're all taxpayers, we're neighbors, and, to quote Mr. Makki, we're all flesh and blood. Thankfully, however, we're not all closed minded. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Ottawa the only choice I Reunion —] To the editor, For those of us that like to look behind the scenes and examine the motives of politics today in Canada, one doesn't have to look anv fur- ther than the P.C. leadership con- vention held in Ottawa. You see location is everything when you're fighting for your very existence like this party is. Let's take the east coast for instance. If they had their conven- tion there they'd be surrounded by dozens of closed and decapitated fish plants, and there's always the Westray Coal Mine in the back- ground lying silent and empty like some giant tombstone. It doesn't make for good "photo opportunity They could always go out west but that's Reform country, the vot- ers would only pester you about issues all the time like the horren- dous debt this party ran up and the terrible state this country is really in. There's always Vancouver, but with only a 268 -vote margin, Kim Campbell just barely won her seat and the rest of the country might find out Kim is not the "Egyptian Queen" her spin doctors would like us to believe. Her "Barge Bur- nished in Gold" might strike a rock and sink in Buzzard's Bay. If they wanted to relive Custer's last stand they could of course come to Toronto, but that would be a Jones -Town mass political sui- cide. Surrounded by millions of angry voters and thousands of unemployed Canadians they'd be clubbedlike seal pups as soon as they got off the plane. You see they really didn't have a choice, they had to pull in their heads and hole up in Ottawa like a giant tortoise because there's no place else for them to go. Interesting thought isn't it?
