PICKERING - Canada Day celebrations here turned frightening when
fireworks being enjoyed by thousands suddenly exploded in the crowd,
sending three people to hospital.
The accident occurred near the conclusion of a giant pyro-musical
fireworks display at Kinsmen Park on Sandy Beach Rd., during an annual
July I bash hosted by the Town.
It appeared a firecracker "misfired" and shot directly into the crowd,

food drive
launched
AJAX-PICKERING - A
summer food drive is being
launched by the Ajax -Pickering
Community Food Bank due to
dwindling supplies.
Both donations and volun-
teers are needed to make the
drive a success and help local
families put dinner on the table.
The campaign will run from
Thursday, July 15 to Thursday,
July 22.
"The whole reason for it is to
help us through the summer
months until the next larger -
scale drive at Thanksgiving,"
explains food bank coordinator
Ginny Butler. "We really fig-
ured we'd make it through but
there's no way."
Every week, between 80 and
90 families use the food bank,
which operates out of St. Paul's
on -the -Hill Anglican Church,
Hwy. 2 west of Fairport Rd. in
Pickering.
As well, a number of stu-
dents who live on their own
also turn to the food bank for
help during the summer. The
food bank has rum out of some
items altogether, and overall
supplies are knv.
Needed are non-perishable
food items of all kinds, such as.
tinned pasta, tinned fruit and
vegetables, baby formula,
soups, stews, pasta sauce, juice,
sugar, flour, rice, powdered
milk, peanut butter, desserts,
Coffee, tea, and cold cereal.
Volunteers are needed to
help pick up and sort donations,
and to hand out bags in local
grocery stores to shoppers who
will be asked to fill them. Those
picking up and sorting food
should be at least 18 years old.
But younger children could help
handing out bags in stores if a
family wanted to work together,
suggests Ms. Butler.
Participating grocery stores,
where bags will be handed out,
are also acting as drop-off cen-
tres for donations. They are, in
Ajax, Food City at Harwood
Ave. and Westney Rd.; and
LOEB in the Baywood Plaza on
Bayly St. In Pickering, partici-
pating stores are LOEB Glen-
dale at Dixie Rd. and Finch
Ave.; IGA, Bay Ridges Plaza at
Bayly St. and St. Martins Dr.;
and the Supercentre on Liver-
pool Rd. south of Hwy. 2. _
Donations can also be taken
directly to St. Paul's church.

The only good news
for commuters is that
those who'd like to tote
bicycles on trains are
now allowed to do so
during off-peak hours.
Pickering is now the
end of the line for east-
bound train passengers
travelling outside of rush
hours; buses carry com-
muters on to Ajax, Whit-
by and Oshawa.

were reduced, fares
across the GO system
were raised an average
two per cent Saturday. A
one-way adult fare to
Union Station rose from
$3.85 to $3.95 for Pick-
ering residents; from
$4.40 to $4.50 in Ajax;
from $5.05 to $5.20 in
Whitby; and from $5.70
to $5.85 in Oshawa.
Seniors, children and
students will also pay
more to ride GO Transit,
although prices are still
less than adult fares.
Bicycles are now
accepted on trains any-
time on weekends or hol-
idays, and, on weekdays,
between 9:30 a.m. and 3
pm., and after 6:30 p.m.
Four bikes will be
allowed per car, says GO
Transit information offi-
cer Tom Henry.
While GO's operating
budget has been reduced,
its capital funding has
not been affected and
construction is under
way to extend railway
tracks to Oshawa to pro-
vide train service to the
Motor City.

Ontario health minister Ruth
Grier has announced her min-
istry has earmarked $931,000 for
the Durham District Health
Council to put the program in
place.
The health council would buy
existing homemaker services
offered through such non-profit
agencies as the Saint Elizabeth
Visiting Nurses Association, the
Victorian Order of Nurses or the
Canadian Red Cross.
People using the service need
help with personal care such as
dressing and bathing and they
require assistance preparing
meals, doing the laundry or
shopping.
Durham is one of 18 commu-
nities to receive funding for the
establishment of the homemaker
program.
In making the announcement,
Mrs. Grier said, "Extension of
the integrated homemaker pro-
gram to new sites means more
Ontarians will now have access
to services that enable people to
stay in their
homes and
communi-
ties."

ensuring integrated homemaker
programs will be available to

The $19.5 million is part of
the previously -announced
$133.5 million for expansion of
integrated homemaker programs.

ty-based system that will offer
appropriate care everywhere in
the Province, stressed Durham
Centre MPP Drummond White.

DURHAM - Interest in a self-
help group for men has skyrock-
eted since it was first introduced
here last April.
Jeff Lunney, founder of The
Curby Club of Durham Region,
has been swamped with mes-
sages left on his telephone
answering machine. Men call
him from every municipality in
Durham and from as far away as
Bobcaygeon and Peterborough.
Men calling are from all
walks of life. And, they include
the very young and the not -so -
young. "Our oldest member is
78 years old. The youngest is
20," says Mr. Lunney.
The purpose of The Curby
Club is to "offer support for men
who are suffering" from emo-
tional distress and abusive rela-
tionships, explains Mr. Lunney.
Men seeking help are single
parents, physically and emotion-
ally abused, recently separated
or divorced, singles dealing with
problems linked to child custody
and access, the judicial system
or financial problems tied to
marital break-up.
They reach out for a multi-
tude of reasons. But it is hard for
them because of the macho
thing."
Curby Club meetings are held
at Christ Memorial Church at
the co.ner of Mary and Hillcroft
Streets in Oshawa on Tuesdays
from 7 to 9 p.m.
The club's guest speakers
deal with such issues as the
emotional impact of marital
break-ups and legal matters.
Durham Distress Centre gives
out the club telephone number to
men reaching out for help such
as that offered by The Curby
Club. And, doctors are encour-
aging men to call.
This is one of a kind. To my
knowledge, there's not another
like it anywhere," says Mr. Lun-
ney.
The Curby Club is not a place
where men visit just to whine.
"While it's set up to let men get
whatever off their chest, it's also
geared to problem solving."
The name of the group stems
from "men being left on the
curbside".
"Men feel alone and fright-
ened. It's such a lonely experi-
ence. Look at how society views
men. There are six women's
shelters in this area. But there are
none for men."
Mr. Lunney's long-term goal
is to open what he believes to be
North America's first shelter for
men. "We certainly need the
shelters for women. As well, we
need places of refuge for men."
Mr. Lunney has been divorced
for three years. He is childless.
"The problems men have with
access to the children is astro-
nomical. I had no idea. Sure
there are some no-good fathers.
But let's not forget there are
some very good dads out there
too..,
Club meetings are open to all
men and only first names are
used. "Our club is discreet. Your
privacy is a right."
Many men are reluctant to
come out to the meetings at first.
"Once they come, they realize
they are not alone with their feel-
ings. They find out that others
feel the same. That in itself is
helpful. We are a self-help
group. When a man listens to
another man explain his situa-
tion, he can learn how to better
deal with his own life," says Mr.
Lunney.
While the club is growing in
leaps and bounds, there's room
for more.

Public transit: one step
forward, two steps
back
If you're feeling a little lost these days, it's little wonder.
The provincial agencies which run our highways and railways, the very
people who want us to get out of our cars and onto public transit are making it
less attractive to do so.
For every step forward they take, they move two steps bacL
Take the past few days, for example.
The Province recently announced it's going ahead with plans to extend GO
train service east to Oshawa In fact, construction is under way on railway
tracks to the Motor City.
Then, on Saturday, GO Transit's service cutbacks came into effect as its
fares increased. Yep, as of yesterday, GO riders were hit with an average fare
hike of two per cent. And, Pickering became the end of the line for eastbound
Dam passengers travelling outside of rush hours; buses now carry commuters
on to Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa.
During workdays, trains run from Whitby to Union Station between 5:43
am. and 8:47 am. Anyone travelling to Toronto later in the morning will have
to drive or take a bus to catch a GO train in Pickering.
All this comes at a time when the Province has just established a task force
to look into better transit connections and fairer prices for commuters travel-
ling between Metro and outlying communities. Commuters taking transit
across municipal boundaries have never had it easy – often having to pay two
fares. walk long distances and wait a long time for connections.
Better links between Marc and all outlying communities are a must if we
are to get peopie out of their cars and using transit. The task force will work
with commuters, municipalities and labor groups in an attempt to coordinate
17 transit services in the Greater Toronto Area
How can the Ontario government expect a task force to coordinate 17 tran-
sit sen ices when the Province can't seem to properly run one -- GO Transit?
Is it any wonder that the ministry of transportation reports population in the
GTA has grown 16 per cent since 1986, but transit use has declined 18 per
cent in the sante period`'
That trend's going to continue until the people in charge of public transit
get their act on track and give commuters reason to get out of our cars.

Dear Mr. Soetens,

profession in Durham, I am writ-
ing to voice my concerns regard-
ing the Social Contract Frame-
work Agreement Proposal pre -
ted by the Provincial govern -

increased pupil/teacher ratio in an
already stressful environment,
where much of a day is spent
Wending to behavioral concerns
.at the expense of curriculum,
4specially at a time when there is
a public outcry about the quality
of education. Students often arrive
at school with a completely differ-
ent agenda from that of the teach-
er's as a result of a) conditions at
Dome e.g. physical, emotional,
sexual abuse; lack of sleep; lack
of good role models of social
thrills; parental conflict; poor eco-
nomic situation; ill health; and b)
exposure to violence in movies,
television programs and video
games. The addition of more stu-
dents will only cause the "pot to
boil over". Classrooms, particu-
are already over -crowded due to
the size of the furniture and the
sheer size of the young, growing
bodies. The reality is a lack of
physical space for greater number
of students.
I am concerned about teacher
burn -out given the current and
proposed working conditions.
Support services are being
reduced yet the student population
per teacher is increasing. It
doesn't make sense. In the future,
we. can expect to pay for this lack
of support in the form of criminal
activity, and a drain on both the
welfare system and other social
services.
Teachers who are close to
retiring will not only be
penalized for the next
three years; as pensions are deter-
mined by the last five years of
service, these people (I, personal-
ly, am not one) will be affected
for the rest of their lives. Some
have worked for 35 years expect-
ing a full pension upon retirement
only to have it snatched away
from them at the last minute.
That's just not fair.
I have a family of five children
to feed, clothe, and shelter. I have

taking courses to improve my pro-
fessional and financial position in
hard economic times only to be
told, as I am ready to receive a
change in classification, that the
thine and money spent will net me
nothing. I could even live with
that given the assurance that taxes
and the cost for the goods and ser-
vices I need to support my family
would not rise either. Such is not
the case. That's just not fair.
Today I received in the mail a
bill for an additional $150 to be
added to the cost of the summer
course I was planning to take and
thought I had paid in full. It was
difficult enough to come up with
the $500 plus in the first place; I
can't think where I can scrounge
up the extra money. That's not
fair either.
Teachers do not get paid vaca-
tions; how, then, can they possi-
bly take unpaid leaves of
absence? Who will supervise the
classrooms during the time they
are absent — someone who will
need to be paid? That just doesn't
make sense.
Why bother with collective
bargaining during the terns of this
Social Contract Agreement?
There's nothing left to bargain for
that the government hasn't, with
the stroke of a pen, already over-
turned. That, also, is not fair.
There are times when I am
tempted to simply send what little
is left of my pay cheque straight
to the government with the provi-
sion that it feed, clothe, house and
pay for the education of my chil-
dren.
do have a couple of sugges-
tions as to how to increase
the coins in the govern-
ment's coffers and increase the
credibility of politicians who
repeatedly tell us to tighten our
belts:
1) Insist that politicians pay
100 per cent income and all other
taxes just like the rest of us have
to do; and
2) Adjust the pensions of
politicians, from a lifetime pen-
sion after only six years to one
related to the time of service only,
just like the rest of us.
Politicians, by setting up dif-
ferent rules for themselves, have
alienated the very people who put
them in government positions.
Once again, that just doesn't
make sense.

Brenner says it appeared the child
panicked at the commotion.
All three victims were taken by
ambulance to the Ajax -Pickering
General Hospital.
Town officials have not yet
determined exactly what went
wrong with the fireworks show,
says Mr. Brenner. Police say the
fireworks were timed to explode in
the air, but came down into the
crowd and exploded there at about
11:22 p.m.
The rest of the fireworks dis-
play continued as planned while
on-site emergency personnel gave
first-aid treatment to the victims,
and most people in the park were
probably unaware of the mishap,
says Mr. Brenner.
Police officers were already at
the park, having been there
throughout the day for security
reasons, and Pickering firefighters
were on the scene as well as they
were manning donation boxes. St.
John ambulance personnel were
also at the park as a precaution and
aided victims until hospital ambu-
lances arrived.
"There's no question the
response was just about instant. -
says Mr. Brenner. The response
was "excellent by Durham police
and excellent by our staff. Even
the crowd that was around was
excellent. People were genuinely
concerned.

Council will expect a full,
detailed report of the mishap from
staff, he adds.
The Town may have to look for
a bigger area to hold future Cana-
da Day festivities, says councillor
Rick Johnson. "We need a bigger
venue. Safety is a concern:'

unavailable for comment at press
time, as was Tom Quinn, Town
director of community services
and facilities. Department deputy
director Steve Reynolds said the
incident is is investigation by

AJAX - The Ajax Wanderers Rugby Club's men's first team bested
Brampton 22-15 in a match at the Wanderers club Tuesday night.
The Wanderers were led by Nigel Francis, Pete DeVtlle and Don
Pettitt who all scored trys for Ajax. Stewart Dobbs booted a penalty
and two converts in the winning cause.
The Wanderers under -19 boys' rugby team defeated Oshawa 25-0 in

The Minister of Transport announced on August 28, 1992, the
intent to dispose of certain lands deemedwIsurplus to the
requirements of a future possible airport at Pickering.
Disposal of these lands is subject to the Federal Environmental
Assessment and Review Process (EARP).
Transport Canada, in conjunction with Public Works Canada, has
retained the firm of Proctor and Redfern to undertake the Initial
Assessment Report will be available for viewing in the Town
Clerks' Offices of Pickering, Markham and Uxbridge, as well as
the local libraries and the Metropolitan Toronto Resource Library
on and after, July 5, 1993.
An important part of the EARP is public input. A public open
house will be held on July 14, 1993, where representatives from
Public Works Canada, Transport Canada, and the consultants,
Proctor and Redfem Limited, will be present to provide
information and answer any question you may have on the initial
Assessment Report. Input on any potential environmental
concerns or information you might have on individual properties,
is welcome.
