But, they're still angry with the Province for demand- ing Durham make major revisions to the Region's official plan approved by local politicians two years ago this month. Regional planning com- missioner Dr. Mofeed Michael told Durham politi- cians Tuesday that "things are moving our way" after a Friday meeting involving himself, Durham council's ; planning committee chair- man and staff of the Ontario ministry of municipal affairs. The second meeting in two weeks between Region staff and Ontario bureaucrats Jkn Witty persuaded provincial repre- sentatives to drop their demand that Durham's new official plan call for 10 resi- dential units on each acre in future developments. That demand would have seen the Region become home to "wall-to-wall high rises," Durham planning com- mittee vice-chairman and Ajax mayor Jim Witty said Tuesday. He told committee colleagues each new develop- ment would bring not much more than "a park, a school and high rises." Durham Regional Police say they'll be concentrat- ing on intersections, where acci- dents and unsafe driving prac- tices are common. We all, at some time or other, become aggressive drivers," acknowledges Henry Harley, spokesman for the Ontario Asso- ciation of Chiefs of Police. "It's important to realize our impa- tience can be deadly." Someone is killed in a traffic accident in Ontario every eight hours, according to Durham police. Every six minutes, some- one is injured. "Aggressive drivers pose a very serious safety threat not only to themselves, but to other drivers, cyclists and pedestrians," says Mr. Pouliot. "We have to stop these avoidable crashes." The crackdown will include an education campaign emphasizing the message, "Control the mon- ster, stay calm." Punsters and pub- lic service announcements will show how easy it is for people to become dangerous drivers once they're behind the wheel. Consider the events of recent months in Durham. The country's biggest union local at General Molors has broken ranks with the provincial New Democrats — and broken free from it tradition that spans decades. Consider too the spate of high-profile federal election candidates who have made a point of stopping in Durham to push their agendas. The recent visits of Kim Campbell. Jean Charesi. lean C hretien and Preston Manning were a scheduling accident. They have begun to align themselves with traditional NDP supporters and were here to offer change. They have sensed the shift in support and swiftly jumped into the political leadership vacuum created by three years of Premier Bob Rae's government. Consider the debacle Mr. Rae has created by alienating still more of the NDP's traditional supporters in his call fora social contract. Never mind that Mr. Rae's move to slash S2 billion from the public payroll is a responsible one; he's only succeeded in creating feelings of betrayal among those who helped carry his party to power in Ontario. Consider too his party's reversal on various election issues: Sunday shopping and public auto insurance. There are too many examples of mismanagement. broken promises and outright neglect that are clear to see. particularly among those who have supported Nc�v Democrats. And those people, though they may still believe in the ideological views of a socialist government. have a new view after seeing that ide- ology in practice. Breaking from tradition is their answer. Electing a new government in Ontario is the answer for everyone else. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Wallet's missing contents hurts family To the editor, On Friday, Nlay 14, like most Fridays, my husband, my two pre- school children and myself went to the Super Centre on Hwy. 2 after dinner to shop. After shopping I had some difficulty getting my son out of the buggy and inadvertently left my wallet in the buggy. We were just turning on to Hwy. 2 when I realized what had happened. We circled and returned to the store hoping someone would be good enough to return it. Knowing that it was pretty busy I proceeded directly to the customer service desk. As I was approach- ing the desk I saw a person return- ing my wallet to the girl at the desk. I felt relieved and thought there are still honest, decent people left in the world. I wanted to thank the person myself as we were less than 10 feet apart. However, by the time I got the girl's attention to get my wallet you were already gone. I saw you shopping but decided not to go after you as my husband was parked at the entrance. I decided instead to write a letter to the News Advertiser to thank you (hoping that you read the News Advertiser). In my naive, trusting way I did not look into my wallet. I thought the fact that my wallet was returned in such a short time (less than 10 minutes) and that you looked honest there was no need. In fact, I did not look into my wallet until Sunday evening. That's when I noticed to my dis- may what was missing. I was dev- astated. How could you take some- thing that wasn't yours. What you took was a family outing long planned and saved for in these hard economic times. I just wanted you to know how your actions affected us. I am thankful that you returned my wallet, however, I wish you had returned it just as you found it. I hope you would have a change of heart and return what you took (you could leave it at the News Advertiser or at the desk at the Super Centre to the attention of M.A. with instructions that it's to be released to the person who knows exactly what's in the enve- lope.). I know this will probably not happen but I am still opti- mistic. I want you to know that I have forgiven you and if I do see you again I will not approach you. I just want you to know that your actions hurt; it hurt a whole fami- ly. M.M. In a well-publicized press conference Wednesday, GM Canada announced a unique move to turn the truck plant into a 24-hour operation in early August with the addition of a third shift. The move, which will create 650 direct jobs and numerous indirect jobs throughout the sup - plier community, comes less than a week after unionized workers ratified the third shift agreement in a massive vote at Oshawa Civic Auditorium. The provincial government also chipped in $5 million to retrain workers who'll assume those jobs. With heavy market demand for Oshawa -made full-size extended cab Chevrolet and GMC pick-up trucks, Mr. Peap- ples said the auto giant decided to "utilize the flexibility of our existing facilities by adding the first third -shift production to any North American assembly plant that's operating today." Ajax Day at the Dome is set for Saturday. July 17 when the Jays play the Royals and a local musician or musicians will sing the national anthems prior to the game. An anonymous panel of judges will select the winner, based on a videotaped performance of contestants singing O Canada a cappella. Groen Ajax soccer reps clobber Cosmos AJAX - The Ajax Warriors girls' under -11 rep soccer team is off to a good start in league play. On Monday night in North Yoh, the Ajax squad posted a 7-0 shutout victory over the North Yoh Cosmos in the second game of the season. Aja- took North York out of the game quickly, piling up a 6-0 lead in the first half. Ajax scored one more in the second half to put the game out of reach. Natasha Smith led the way for Ajax with three goals. Also scoring were Candice Chapman with two goals and p Cheryl Noonan and Aisha Humphrey with single markers. The most valuable player for the Ajax team was Courtney Austin on defence. Dawn Harrison earned the shutout in goal. Consultants are analyz- ine data such as Durham's population, the incidence of disease, utilization of existing services, what health-care services are unavailable here and more, says Lynda licssey, the health council's exec- utive director. The Ajax -Pickering General Hospital is expecting the study to help determine whether it will get -3*� acute-care beds previously postponed from expansion plans. We think we need (the beds)." says TM. c% Pater- son. the hospital's com- munity relations director. "Hopefully. the study will support what we think." The provincial ministry of health is likely to accept the findings of the study, says Ms. Hesse%. "Nowadays, there usually is a fair amount of consis- tency between what's rec- ommended localiv and what's followed by the ministry.- A final report by con- sultants is expected by October, after which rec- ommendations will be submitted to the ministry. Our hospital's new wing_ will open in July, but there's no immediate need for the 44, beds, says Mrs. Paterson. In Durham, there hasn't been a "major plan- ning" study of hospitals' acute-care services since 1981, says Ms. Hessey.
